    The Supreme Audit Office has conducted the audit of the performance of the Polish Railways (PKP) capital group, comprising the activity of 14 most important companies of the group, included in the audited period, i.e. the years 2010-2013, to the holding managed by PKP SA called the PKP Group (Polish: Grupa PKP). The audit was carried out on the initiative of NIK, as a result of the risk analysis of the railway transportation functioning in Poland, carried out by the NIK Department of Infrastructure. The analysis showed that, despite a series of activities related to the transformation of railways introduced in 2001, the process of modifications of the railway market has not always been successful. The PKP Group, in the first decade of its operations, did not bring satisfying economic results, and the companies established by PKP SA that constitute the PKP Group were mostly unprofitable.

    Paper presents the implementation problems of information management systems in the railway industry with an analysis of the current situation, the needs of companies and benefits of the implementation. It takes into account the area of financial management, a range similar to the other companies, as well as the area of operational management specific for their activities. These issues are presented in the context of technological changes taking place since the beginning of the XXI century in the information management systems and organizational changes in the PKP Group with the transport operations and railway infrastructure management separation, consolidation of the PKP Group and the changes connected with the preparation for the privatization of some of the group entities.

    Strategia PKP S.A. w perspektywie do 2023 r. wyznacza kierunki rozwoju PKP S.A. oraz Spółek Grupy PKP. Strategia bazuje na wiedzy i doświadczeniu ostatnich lat. Uwzględnia ona otocze nie regulacyjne i dynamicznie zmieniające się otoczenie rynkowe. Duże znaczenie w strategii ma logistyka jako narzędzie dające możliwości przywrócenia należnego miejsca kolei w przepływach strumieni towarowych i osobowych o charakterze wewnętrznym i międzynarodowym. Strategia zwraca uwagę na konieczność usprawnienia systemu zarządzania Grupą PKP S.A. Realizacja założonych w Strategii zadań, w zakładanym horyzoncie czasowym, ma doprowadzić polską kolej do stanu, w którym zaistnieją warunki do korzystania przez społeczeństwo i gospodarkę w pełnym zakresie z walorów konkurencyjności tej gałęzi transportu.
    Implementing the PKP S.A. strategy shall ensure preparing the Polish railway transport for the upcoming challenges. Macroeconomic trends clearly indicate the necessity to develop multimodality of people and cargo transport. In terms of cargo logistics, Poland must use the great advantage of geographical location at the crossing of European corridors: East-West and North-South. Multimodality of passenger transport should be built through railway station investments, which lead to the improvement of availability and connection of different transport sectors. At the same time, considering the continuous globalization and consolidation processes in Europe as well as all over the world, a necessity of creating a potent and integrated railway infrastructure that would operate as a holding company.
