Opis:
The author of the article focuses on the description of war photography which she classifies as journal photography. She points out that the development of this type of photography was considerably influenced by social photography. She argues that the image of unnecessary human suffering shows the senselessness and injustice of war which are strongly accentuated in photographs. Such emphasis affects emotions, compels the receiver to reflection and performs a propaganda function at the same time. On selected examples, the author presents the historical, documentary and artistic value of war photographs. She devotes a separate part of the article to the description of the beginnings of the Polish journal photography.

The aim of the article is to confirm the assumption that perspective is one of the tools that build a photographic act of communication. It has been observed that the perspective allows to obtain the illusion of the third dimension on the two-dimensional surface of the photograph but also creates multiple systems of meaning and even becomes a symbolic form. The focus was on the works of Jeanloupe Sieff, a photographer who used a perspective tool in an innovative way that allowed him to create both realistic, ‘superficial’ presentations and surrealistic, ‘deep’ meaning contexts.

Opis:
The popularity of Jerzy Lewczyński (1924-2014) coincided with the academic interest in the problem of archive, corresponding to Lewczyński’s program of the “archeology of photography,” developed in the 1970s. Lewczyński’s idea consisted in restoring Kantor’s “reality of the lowest rank,” i.e. the rejected microhistories hidden in the anonymous and the forgotten or taken out of an ashtray at the Warsaw Central train station. Today, however, one tends to forget that Lewczyński’s gesture of artistic legitimization did not aim at giving new meanings, but above all at blurring the boundary between everyday items and those which emerged from some kind of “aesthetic situation” (Maria Gołaszewska). This aspect of his art can be seen, e. g, in his visual journal, where the artist included objects of particular importance – next to Xerox copies of his own works or works of other artists, he placed also shopping receipts. Lewczyński equaled the value of cheap receipt paper with the noble velvety quality of bromine. He did not reduce his collected items to their aesthetic function, having rejected the institutionalized idea of the artifact as a work of art to enjoy by the audience. Anticipating the postulates of Bruno Latour, instead of showing objects appropriated by the power of the gaze, he presented actors: things that asked questions on their own.

The essay attempts to characterize those photographs, in which the crucial subject is human individual and his existential situation. The basis of the work is primarily the material collected during the interview with the artist himself.

Several cases have surfaced in the past two decades where the photojournalists associated with some of the most respected and trusted news organizations have been accused of altering the news photos. During the same time, the developments in the digital cameras and editing software have put the image altering technology into the hands of all practicing journalists and journalism students. This paper explores two, somewhat connected, issues: objectivity in photojournalism and ethics of altering photographic images. The paper discusses objectivity in journalism in general and photojournalism to address the question: Can a photojournalist use a camera to record reality in an objective manner? Since the photographers have altered (retouched) images from the very beginning of photography, where are the ethical boundaries of image alteration for the photojournalists?

Opis:
The canonic texts devoted to photography, written by R. Barthes and S. Sontag, have preserved the perception of this medium in the perspective of inevitable and inseparable connection with death. They have supplied a series of metaphors through which we describe photography as a “funereal” or nostalgic. These authors, however, were not the first ones who pointed at the relations occurring between photography and death. It turns out that they were noticed very soon after the medium had been discovered. The successive decades of photography development and critical thinking about it deepened interpretational threads of this kind even further. The text presents selected threads from the history of photography as well as theoretical reflection, which “established” and sanctioned this way of thinking about photography. In the second part of the text a division has been made into ¬post-mortem and pre-mortem photography. It comes down to isolating two categories of photographs, which either document dead bodies or capture people who are going to be killed or die shortly. The last part of the text contains reflections on three images, which concern the title issue in a different way. They draw attention, among others, to the fact, that while thinking about the relation photography – death, we cannot limit ourselves exclusively to the human aspect, but we have to take into consideration the fate of animals, often enormously tragic indeed.

This paper deals with the archaeological discoveries in ancient Nubia. Polish researchers played a considerable role in them with Kazimierz Michałowski (1901-1981) as their leader. The text presents the most important achievements of our scientists, that were made in Faras and Old Dongola. In each of these sites photography was used for detailed documentation of findings. The importance of aerial photography should be particularly emphasized. It was applied for the first time in the Sudan during the excavations at Jebel Moya, at the beginning of the 20th century. In the 80s and 90s of the last century, Polish archaeologists creatively developed this technique in Old Dongola.

Home Photography of Women – between Document and Private Artistic ExperimentThe text focuses on photographs taken by Klementyna Zubrzycka at the beginning of 20th century, at her home town Limanowa. It is interesting to examine these pictures in the context of both home life and family life, because the author – Zubrzycka mostly documented her everyday life and relatives, like others amateurs in the first half of 20th century, including Lartigue or Vivian Maier (who was popularized by a documentary film made in 2013). Analyzing photographs of Zubrzycka, it is necessary to check to what extend home (and family) photography was considered to be domain of women. And if emancipation and modernity opened a new filed of creativity for women. The other issue is to examine these pictures in terms of aesthetics and artistic values, usually re-discovered by critics and curators years after they were made. The last but not least question would be one about differences between amateur photography and arts.

Opis:
In the presented article, the critical analysis of Thomas Struth’s photography - included in the first part - is becoming an excuse for the sociological interpretation of specific way of photographing. Photography in the social world, uses and affordances, relations and deformations, according to which the reality is being introduced, becomes the subject of considered photos. But, from the point of view of visual sociology, this topic’s change seems to not be considerably interesting until the point when it will be considered on the field of the temporary status of the pictures themselves, thus interpret them on the background set of changes in their function and manners in which we are using them and theorizing about them. Those kind of reflection are the subject of the second part of the text. I’m looking there at the photography in theory, an album, gallery, advertisement and critic, analyzing the outcomes of such practices in optics – elaborated during presented considerations – categories of the “photography’s photography”; a category which I propose to be treated not only as a litmus for the contemporary visual order, but also as a stabilizer of this order.
W niniejszym artykule krytyczna analiza fotografii Thomasa Strutha - zawarta w części pierwszej - staje się pretekstem do socjologicznej interpretacji specyficznego sposobu fotografowania.

Opis:
A term "photo-text" emphasizes a contemporary change in visual culture researches, where photography is a link between a photographed object and its cultural meaning. In a book titled “Phototextuality” Andrea Noble and Alex Hughes stated that phototextuality plays “between the culturally fabricated nature of photographic artifact and its fundamental indexality, that is, its status as a trace of the real; and evidential manifestation of what has been”. Photo-texts characterised by critical, self-reflective and intertextual attitude towards culture go together with contemporary interests with narration, memory and history. The text is divided into few parts. I consider a status of phototextuality in the first one and present basic researches on textuality of photography in the second. I compare Roland Barthes’s analysis to a John Berger’s and Jean Mohr’s project there. Part three is dedicated to visual studies, where phototextuality is a field of discussion with models of art and popular culture (on an example of Gregor Brandler work). Finally, in the fourth part a critical attitude of photo-texts towards history is presented. In conclusion, photo-texts are regarded as an effective tool of contemporary culture analysis, both on the level of its production and on “reading” level. This reading is not a “free” or “mis” –reading, that tears the meanings off the objects of reference, but rather which “anchorages” those meanings in represented object.

Opis:
The article presents the technology of eyetracking and the possibilities of using it in computer analysis of the perception of images in a photograph. The traditional method of reading emotions observed in a photograph is difficult and imprecise. Based on verbal relations and impressions of the viewers, it is possible to create an approximate model of perception of specific emotions conveyed by a given message. The subjectivity of perception signals related to many independent variables is often the reason for inaccuracy of the drawn conclusions. Modern computer techniques use the computer as the basic tool for processing large amounts of data in the form of text, images, sound and animations. Including computer in the research process considerably improves the quality and increases the likelihood that the achieved results are accurate. The fundamental factor influencing the changes is related to the mathematization of the results, having a direct impact on the increase of their objectivity. Eyetracking is a new measurement tool which proves effective in answering the issue how people perceive reality. The article presents a method of analysing photographs with the use of the eyetracker. The following issues are discussed: analysis parameters, the achieved results and the method of interpreting them. The whole description is presented on the example of particular photograph selected in order to carry out actual analysis constituting a part of the in-depth scientific research conducted by the authors.
