Opis:
The rules and guidelines for integrated pest management specified in Annex III, sections 2 and 3, state “General principles of integrated pest management”: Harmful organisms must be monitored by adequate methods and tools, where available. Such adequate tools should include observations in the field as well as scientifically sound warnings, forecasting and early diagnostic systems, where feasible, as well as advice from professionally qualified advisors. As part of Multiannual Programs, the Institute of Plant Protection – NRI in Poznań has been carrying out work and research for many years to develop or modify guidelines for monitoring short- and long-term forecasting of pest occurrence on crops. These guidelines are extremely helpful for farmers and advisers in determining the optimum date of chemical control of pests on plants. Regularly revised and improved the guidelines deal with pests which currently pose a threat to crops. They are developed according to the latest scientific findings and are successfully promoted among professional users and agricultural advisors. These guidelines are standardized to include descriptions of species, life cycles, symptoms of damage/infestation of crops, methods of observation targeted at warning of the need for plant protection treatments, and threshold values of harmfulness. All guidelines include extensive photographic material. Guidelines for the monitoring of pests on orchard plants, vegetables and others are prepared at the Institute of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation − NRI in Puławy and the Institute of Pomology in Skierniewice. Guidelines for about 80 pests of crops are available for public use in the on-line Pest Warning System (Platforma Sygnalizacji Agrofagów, www.agrofagi.com.pl).

The constantly and rapidly changing market, new competition entering the market, or globalization, mean that companies have to constantly rethink their existing operations. The aim of study was to analyze these facts in small and medium-sized enterprises, which seek to eliminate their weaknesses and improve their strengths, with the aim of defining and creating a competitive advantage. This is the key to fighting existing competition. However, in order to identify it, it is necessary to know in detail the external environment of the subject, which we monitored by two main methods, using PEST analysis and the subsequent proceed to the analysis within the company by using the benchmarking method. The presented article describes and applies the benchmarking method within the company Š-Auto, which operates in eastern Slovakia in several district cities. The results brought us conclusions that allow us to provide services of the same high quality level in all operations for customers in analyzed SME.

Opis:
The species Halyomorpha halys (Stål), which is endemic in East Asia, was first detected in North America in 1996 and was probably introduced into Europe in 2008. The species is polyphagous. It consumes over 170 host plant species and significantly impacts crop pro- duction. In Greece the first recording of its presence was in 2014, when it was reported as a nuisance in houses in the region of Athens. The present study describes the systematic spread and damage of this invasive pest, including the first recorded identification in peach and olive cultivations in the prefecture of Imathia in central Macedonia, Greece. Sampling was carried out in representative peach and olive farms during July and August, 2018 and 2019 in which significant levels of fruit damage were recorded, especially during 2018. The population of the species was recorded throughout the winter seasons of 2018 and 2019 in which overwintering adults were systematically recorded in shelters and other construc- tions near fruit orchards. Given the dynamics of the species and its destructive impact on a wide range of host species, H. halys is expected to be a major pest. Additionally, considering that the prefecture of Imathia is the most important peach growing area of Greece, further studies of the presence and population dynamics of this species along with the establishment of particular management actions to control the population is impera- tive for the future protection of horticultural production in Greece.

Opis:
Pest mites of the family Tetranychidae are commonly reported in several legumes. However, reports of their occurrence in lima beans are insipient, especially in Brazil. The objective of this research was to record the occurrence of mites in lima bean plants and to describe their damage in this Fabaceae. Tetranychus neocaledonicus André and Mononychellus planki McGregor were found in lima bean plants, Phaseolus lunatus (Fabaceae or Leguminosae). The lima bean plants, when infested by these mites, initially exhibit small whitish spots in the leaflets, which with increasing population density rapidly evolve into chlorotic patches, followed by silvering, and may dry out and fall due to their overfeeding. The extent of the damage caused to lima bean plants and the adaptability of the mite to warm and dry conditions indicate that T. neocaledonicus has greater potential as a lima bean pest than M. planki in northeastern Brazil. This is the first record of these mites associated with P. lunatus.

Opis:
The future of food security in Africa is being severely threatened due to an exponential increase in population, which is almost three times the increase of food production. Maize production is constrained by stem borers which cause significant yield losses. Yield losses can be further compounded by higher temperatures due to climate changes, which are expected to increase the population of maize stem borers. While several methods have been employed in stem borer management, there is still significant damage caused by maize stem borers. This necessitates better control methods including the adoption of recent biotechnological advancement in RNA interference (RNAi) technology. This review highlights evidence of an increase in the stem borer population as well as the foreseen decline in maize production worldwide due to the effects of climatic changes. Furthermore, we have drawn attention to improved methods that have been used to control stem borers in maize production as well as a reluctant acceptance of traditional biotechnology in Africa. Finally, we suggest the application of alternative RNA interference techniques to breed maize for efficient pest control in order to achieve food security, improve nutrition and promote sustainable maize production.

Opis:
Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) is an important vegetable crop for income of small-holder farmers. However, it is attacked by many insect pests that cause high economic losses. More than sixty five research technical papers were reviewed focus on control and management strategies of Tuta absoluta (Meyrick, 1917) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae). The aim of this review paper is to call for attentions and concerted actions of concerned sectors by describing the potential damage of the pest, its entry, pathways and its control methods. The pest is becoming one of the major key pests of tomato which account for its production loss of up to 80 to 100% if left unchecked. The pest have developed resistance to dozens of pesticides and therefore the (IPM) strategy that employs bio-chemical, biological, physical and cultural methods is the only best option we had at time. Therefore, a brief outlook of the future research and applications of indigenous T. absoluta biological control agents are widely discussed.

Opis:
Pests living in the soil cause great damage to horticultural crops every year, particularly those managed by organic farming methods. The most damaging pests are larvae of the genera Melolontha. The purpose of the research was to develop and evaluate the efficacy of a variety of non-chemical methods to reduce the damage caused by the grubs on organic strawberry plantations. The used mechanical methods included soil ploughing and tilling, and hand picking grubs from damaged plants during inspection or manual weed control. The used physical methods were: soil and plants mulching with white agro-textile to limit egg laying and light traps to attract and collect adults. The results indicate even though each method alone is not sufficient to effectively protect organic strawberry crops against Melolontha spp grubs, their integrated use could drastically reduce the population pressure of the insect on the crop and thus increase also the efficacy of other methods, e.g. based on biocontrol mechanisms.

The horse chestnut leaf miner, Cameraria ohridella Deschka & Dimic (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae), is a new invasive pest that has spread all over the Europe over the last 25 years. This paper presents research aimed to: 1) compare the effectiveness of sticky pheromone traps of various types (sizes and colors), 2) determine the effect of a trap location on moth catches. Studies were conducted in Warsaw and Falenty near Warsaw. No trap color preference by male moths was found in tests of white, blue and green barrier traps. Barrier traps had the largest sticky area (32 dm2) in comparison to PL-2 (5.625 dm2) and delta PL-1 (3.4 dm2) traps, thus they caught the highest total number of males, however PL-2 traps were the most effective (268-381 moths/dm2). The results of the studies suggest that to make traps with the C. ohridella pheromone be more effective they should: a) be located on a stem below a tree crown or in its lower part for the first C. ohridella generation, and in crowns for the second and later insect generations, b) be placed in some distance from a tree stem, if located in crowns.

The effects of powdered herbs (lavender Lavandula officinalis L., peppermint Mentha piperita L. and basil Ocimium basilicum L.) added to the food substances of three insect species: the rice weevil Sitophilus oryzae (L.), lesser grain borer Rhyzopertha dominica (F.), and the saw-toothed grain beetle Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.) on the life span and development of the three insect species as well as habitat conditions, sex structure, and the survivability of males and females were considered. The experiments were conducted in the laboratory at a temperature of 28°C and relative humidity (RH) 60 ±5%. In all the studied populations, high female mortality was found (♂/♀ < 1). The studied populations were: the rice weevil and the lesser grain borer cultured in wheat grain with herb additions, and the saw-toothed grain beetle cultured in semolina with herb additions. Among the herbs used, peppermint caused a significant effect in the form of increased mortality rates among females of S. oryzae and O. surinamensis. Lavender and basil had a similar impact among R. dominica females. The herbs applied in the experiments intensified the mortality of females and, consequently, led to the disappearance of entire populations.

Bioassays were conducted to assess the effects of two silicon dioxide nanoparticles of Aerosil® and Nanosav against adults of Rhyzopertha dominica F. and Tribolium confusum Jacquelin du Val. Silica nanoparticles were applied at the rates of 50, 100, 200 and 300 mg · kg–1 on wheat and peeled barley. The mortality was counted after 1, 2, 3, and 7 days of exposure. Another experiment was carried out to evaluate the effect of food source on the survival of beetles after exposure to silica nanoparticles. Adults were exposed to silica nanoparticles at the rate of 0.2 mg · cm–2 for 1 and 2 days on filter paper inside plastic Petri dishes, respectively. After exposure, the initial mortality was counted and live individuals of both species were held for a week in empty glass vials or vials containing wheat and wheat flour, respectively. Silica nanoparticles have high toxicity on R. dominica and T. confusum adults. Rhyzopertha dominica was more susceptible than T. confusum. However, the mortality of both species increased with increasing concentrations and time exposed to each concentration. At low concentrations, Aerosil® was more effective than Nanosav. Silica nanoparticles were more effective in wheat grains than barley. Results indicated that the initial mortality was so high that the impact of food source on delay mortality was unclear in most cases. Silica nanoparticles were efficient against tested species and can be used effectively in a stored grain integrated pest management program.

Soybean [Glycine max (L.)], one of the most important crops in Argentina, is commonly infected by Colletotrichum truncatum, the causal agent of anthracnose. Tagetes filifolia essential oil (EO) is presented as a natural approach to minimize the dose of chemical fungicides applied to the crop. The fungus Trichoderma harzianum is used as a biocontrol agent because of its ability to produce secondary metabolites that destroy cell walls of phytopathogenic fungi. However, its performance can be affected when it is exposed to chemical fungicides. The objective of this work was to evaluate the antifungal activity of T. filifolia EO both individually and combined with chemical fungicides against C. truncatum, and its effect on T. harzianum. Fungi were isolated from soybean crops. The following pesticides were assessed: carbendazim (F1), difenoconazole (F2) and trifloxystrobin + cyproconazole (F3). The EO was obtained from native plants and its chemical composition was analyzed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). The minimum fungicide concentration (MFC) was determined for each compound. Fungicides were combined with the EO to look for combinations that allowed a reduction of pesticide doses. Among fungicides, F1 showed the strongest antifungal activity against C. truncatum (MFC = 0.25 µl ⋅ l–1) and T. harzianum (MFC = 1.5 µl ⋅ l–1). The sensitivity of both fungi to the EO was lower than to fungicides. The EO presented MFCs of 6,000 and 9,000 µl ⋅ l–1 against C. truncatum and T. harzianum. The EO and F1 affected the growth of T. harzianum at concentrations that controlled C. truncatum (31 and 10%). Eight combinations of fungicides and the EO allowed fungicide concentration reductions of up to 80%, although the growth of the biocontrol strain was also affected. The results demonstrated that T. filifolia EO can be used to control anthracnose and reduce doses of chemical fungicides applied to soybean crops. Its effect on T. harzianum should be considered in the design of integrated pest management strategies.

Renewable energy investments are still treated in the process of investment financing as something exotic in Polish determinants. Many banks and financing institutions, are not able to examine this type of investment due to lack of knowledge about the strategic environment of the sector. This causes difficulties in obtaining financing for these investments. The purpose of this study was to analyze the strategic determinants of investment in renewable energy. The result of this study are: scenario analysis, SWOT and PEST analysis of renewable energy sector, which could be used by participants in decision-making process in case of financing these investments. Strategic analysis allows to determine the long-term risks in investment process. Strategic analysis allows the identification of future restrictions in formulating business strategy in the renewable energy sector. It also allows an initial assessment of the degree of uncertainty and the stability and structure of the business environment. Macroeconomic analysis shows that the largest span of influence is in the politico-legal on most all the omissions legislative support for the development of renewable energy sources, while at the same time a high probability that this does not happen. There is also considerable influence of economic factors, ie the increase in exchange rates (significant at the planned purchase of turbines from a foreign supplier), or increase borrowing rates, may result in a significant negative impact on the profitability of investments. At the same time observed a very high probability of continued government support for investment in renewable energy, both in economic and political-legal. Prosperity of the proposed project foster technological factors such as the planned modernization of transmission grids and the emergence of a common EU market of renewable energy. As a result of the strategic analysis of investment in renewable energy we can conclude that are very favorable strategic conditions (political and legal regulation) in Poland. This conclusion will encourage investors to carry out such investment, as well as funding institutions, to finance them.

Tuberolachnus salignus is a cosmopolitan aphid that predominantly feeds on the willow. It can be an economically im-portant pest of this plant. The aim of the study was to present the thematic scope of the literature on this species in Poland and in the world. The typical issues related to aphid biology (life cycle, nutrition, distribution) and its potential harmfulness are consid-ered. Additionally, aphid genetics, dyes, natural enemies, indirect influence on the soil environment as well as the use of this insect species in research on plant physiology are taken into account. It was found that in recent years, the studies on giant willow aphid have been mainly motivated by the potential utilisation of the results in the protection of willow against this aphid. Despite a wide range of topics, the publications collected in the SCOPUS and Web of Science databases are not sufficient sources of in-formation about this species. The available data must be supple-mented and updated using modern research methods. The experi-ments and observations should consider the direct and indirect relationships of T. salignus with other organisms and the environment.

With the advent of the pandemic and the outbreak of individuality in inter-state politics, semiconductors, products that have become widely used by high-tech companies, have led to an increase in worldwide demand. But growing nationalism has led nations not to cooperate on the successful joint and equitable growth of these innovative technologies. This research analyses through a PEST analysis the political, economic, social and technological consequence of these choices for the largest semiconductor company, TSMC. The results show how, to date, the international chessboard poses four choices facing TSMC’s future, each based on how nations will approach future collaborative choices.

The article features problems of applying selected methods of strategic analysis of environment to be applied in NATO crisis response operations’ planning. The strategic analysis allows carrying out a diagnosis of the enterprise’s status quo and its environment and also its assessment and forecast. Due to the simplicity of its conducting, the analysis is applied to recognise crisis situations’ environment which then is used to build an operation plan. Two methods have been presented in a synthetic way i.e. PEST analysis (military version of PMESII) as well as scenarios of environment states. Both analyses are based on the diagnosis of such areas as political, military, economic, social, cultural, infrastructural and international ones.

Opis:
Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) is grown widely in the world because the seeds are rich source of protein for the rapidly increasing population. However, the production and productivity of chickpea have been experienced drastically because of biotic and abiotic stresses. It is vulnerable to a broad range of pathogens and the mainly severe pest being gram pod borer, Helicoverpa armigera. For the management of this serious pest, application of insecticides has several adverse effects on living organisms and the environment as a whole, the use of biological agents for chickpea improvement appears to be appropriate approach. Various studies by different scholars on the effect of different bio-agents against H. armigera have been carried out and found to confer resistance to pod borer. The use of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) based microbial insecticides have become an integral part of IPM approaches, particularly because these preparations provide an environmentally suitable alternative to the generally hazardeous broad-spectrum chemical insecticides. These bacterial insecticides like Nuclear Polyhedrosis Virus (NPV), which is target specific and exert no effect on beneficial organisms (e.g. parasitoids and predators). Most natural populations of H. armigera have at least some degree of infection by species-specific NPVs. When the degree of NPV infection can be enhanced, H. armigera larval population can be decimated, without deleterious effects on any other organisms. Various potentially effective parasitoids, like ichneumonid, Campoletis chloridae and Trichogramma spp., are found parasitizing eggs and larvae of H. armigera infesting chickpea. Various insectivorous birds and use of bird perches have long been observed to be effective predators of H. armigera larvae. Similarly various plant extracts have shown insecticidal properties and can be used effectively on field crops. Opis:
The whitefly, Bemisia tabaci, an insect of the order Hemiptera which attacks more than 600 species of plants, is one of the most important agricultural pests around the world. The insecticidal Cry proteins from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) are useful biological pesticides, and some are toxic to Hemipteran insects. In this study, Colombian native isolates of Bt were functionally characterized at molecular and biological levels. The strains contained between one and five different crystal shapes: round, triangular, amorphous, bipyramidal and squared. The strains presented between three to seven bands of proteins in their electrophoretic pattern that were organized into six groups according to their possible biological activity on insect pests. Cry1Aa, cry1Ab, cry1Ac, cry1B and cry1C genes were identified for PCR in the different Bt isolates. Bioassays were performed on tomato leaves whose surface was spread with 3 µg · ml−1 crude extract of Bt toxins. Second instar larvae of whitefly, which were placed on top of leaves and exposed to the toxins for 7 days, exhibited mortalities from 18 to 69%. The lethal concentration 50 (LC50) of ZBUJTL39, Bt kurstaki HD1 and ZCUJTL9 strains were 1.83, 1.85 and 2.16 μg · ml−1, respectively (p < 0.05). These results show that the native Bt strain ZBUJTL39, which contained the genes cry1Aa, cry1Ab, cryCa and cryBa could eventually be used for the development of an integrated management program together with other tools for the control of B. tabaci.

Th e present exploration is focused on the bio-fabrication of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) using Trichodesma indicum aqueous leaf extract as a reducing agent. Th e synthesized Ag NPs were productively characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, XRD, and TEM studies. Th e photosynthesis of Ag NPs was done at room temperature for 24 h and at 60°C. Th e green synthesis of spherical-shaped Ag NPs bio-fabricated from T. indicum with a face centred cubic structure showed average particle sizes of 20–50 nm, which is inconsistent with the particle size calculated by the XRD Scherer equation and TEM analysis. We further explored the larvicidal effi cacy of biosynthesized Ag NPs with leaf extracts of T. indicum against Mythimna separata. Th e results showed that Ag NPs (20–50 nm) of T. indicum possess good larvicidal activity against M. separata with an LC50 of 500 ppm. Th us, we can advocate that Ag NPs of 20–50 nm size extracted from T. indicum may be considered in the pest management programme of M. separata in future.
