Opis:
During Middle Triassic times, the Germanic or northern Peri-Tethys Basin pertained to the western Tethys Ocean. The basin was closed from the north and open toward the Tethys by tectonically controlled depressions (gates). The gates were opened in different times. The marine incursions broke first (as early as in late Scythian time) through the eastern gates and from the Polish Basin advanced gradually to the west. Semiclosed disposition of the basin resulted in its distinctive environmental diversification. Open marine environments developed along the southeastern margins which should be regarded as an integrate part of the Tethys Ocean rather than the epicontinental sea. Northward and westward from the Silesian and Carpathian domains the environments became more restricted. This resulted in significant facies diachronity between the western and eastern parts of the basin. As indicated by the faunal diversity, facies variability and geochemical properties of the sediments, during almost entire Anisian time the open marine sedimentation dominated in the eastern part while the western part displayed restricted circulation, typical for the semi-closed, evaporitic basin. The circulation reversed in Ladinian time when the westward shift of the tethyan spreading center gave rise to opening of the western gate. Meanwhile, the eastern and northern parts of the basin were uplifted and underwent emersion by the end of the Ladinian. Evolution of the southern parts of the Germanic Basin (Silesia, Holy Cross Mts., SW Germany) has been directly influenced by the Tethys rifts. The crustal motion was transmitted from the Tethys rift onto its northern periphery by reactivated Hercynian master faults. The Northern Germany and the North Sea basins were controlled by the North Atlantic-Arctic rift system. The central part of the basin was dominated by thermal subsidence. Despite of the intense synsedimentary tectonism affecting the basin, the distinguished 3rd order depositional sequences resulted from eustatic controls. The concordance between the tethyan and peritethyan sequence stratigraphy argues for the overregional, eustatic nature of the sequences. Faunal migration from the Tethys into its northern periphery followed generally the rift-controlled opening of the seaways within the Tethys. The first tethyan faunas which appeared in the south-eastern part of the Polish Basin as early as in Induan time came from the eastern branch of the Tethys Ocean (Paleo-Tethys). The next migration waves proceeded by western branches of the spreading ocean (Neo-Tethys) and entered the Germanic Basin through the Silesian-Moravian Gate (in Anisian time) and through the Western Gate from Ladinian time onward.
W czasie środkowego triasu basen germański należał do północnego obrzeżenia Oceanu Tetydy nazywanego północną Perytetydą. Subtropikalna pozycja paleogeograficzna północnej Perytetydy warunkowała jej gorący i półsuchy klimat. Okresowe zwilgotnienia w późnym ladynie i w karniku były pochodną przebudowy tektonicznej i intensywnej działalności wulkanicznej w obrębie Tetydy.

Carpathian Foreland
Peri-Tethys
Opis:
During the Early Cretaceous a central part of the Carpathian Foreland was situated in the Peri-Tethys area. That zone was located on the SW margin of the East European Craton and it was adjacent to the Tethys basins in the south. Impact of those both zoogeographic provinces (the Boreal Sea and the Tethys Ocean) is easily noticeable in assemblages of microfauna. Character of sedimentation in the Early Cretaceous basin of the Carpathian Foreland is connected mainly with changes of the sea-level as well as tectonic activity of this region. The stratigraphy and facies data are based on near two hundreds wells profiles. Detailed sedimentological profiles and photographic documentation of the Upper Jurassic and the Lower Cretaceous deposits from about 50 boreholes were done as well as micropalaeontological and microfacial studies of core samples. The presented work is an attempt of unification and formalization of lithostratigraphic units’ nomenclature. Two boreholes: Zagorzyce-7 andWiewiórka-4 were suggested as stratotype sections of distinguished formations. Jurassic–Cretaceous boundary is probably situated within limits of Ropczyce formation in this area. Three formations have been distinguished in the profile of Lower Cretaceous above Ropczyce formation: Zagorzyce limestone-marl formation (Berriasian age), Dębica marl and organodetritic limestone formation (Valanginian) andWiewiórka limestone formation (Late Valanginian-Hauterivian). The most marked erosion surface is recorded between Zagorzyce and Dębica formations. We suppose that hiatus including a large part of Lower Valanginian profile is connected with that erosion surface. It could be refered to a rapid fall of the sea-level in the Tethys Ocean, noticed inter alia in theWestern Carpathians and the Northern Calcareous Alps. The known existing thickness of the Lower Cretaceous sediments in the middle part of Carpathian Foreland (total of three formations: Zagorzyce fm., Dębica fm. andWiewiórka fm.) rises to 188 m in Zagorzyce-1 well.

The Podhale Basin is one of the most important geothermal regions in Poland, characterised by water temperatures from 20 to 86°C, total dissolved solids (TDS) about 3 g/L, and good water renewal. However, this is a cross-border aquifer system and it is advisable to consider its occurrence in relation to the parameters of the hydraulically connected peri-Tatric troughs in Slovakia. Thermal waters of Podhale are primarily used for recreation and, to lesser extent, for heating purposes, and only on a small scale for drying wood, fish farming and cultivation of vegetables. In Slovakia, thermal waters are used exclusively for recreational purposes. The greatest threat is the over-exploitation of the resources, especially in a small area of the Podhale Basin, and particularly in its northeastern part, where the ages of the thermal waters are very old, indicating a weak renewal of these waters.

Osteoblasts are cells of mesenchymal origin, which rebuild resorbed bone by synthesizing bone matrix proteins and by inducing bone matrix mineralization. Osteoblasts play a crucial role in creating and maintenance of healthy bone architecture, bone repair, and peri-implant bone healing (osseointegration). These bone-forming cells are also involved in regulation of osteoclasts function, and hence bone resorption in osteoclastogenesis process. We have presented our own studies on the subsequent stages of differentiation of Human Bone-Derived Cells (HBDCs) that could be a good candidate as an autogenous source for reconstruction and rebuilding of own patient's bone using tissue engineering methods. In this review we discussed the biology of osteoblasts, compared with the HBDCs cultures, under the influence of growth factors (FGF-2, TGF-ß, IGF, PDGF) and hormones (PTH, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3, leptin). Our review is also focused on the participation of intercellular adhesion proteins (cadherins, claudins, connexin, 'OsteoMacs'), transcription factors (Cbfal, Msx-2, Osx, ATF4), and others molecules (RANKL, OPG, BMP2, lactofferin, PPARY) in modulating osteoblasts functions on the basis of current reports, throwing new light on the involvement of osteoblasts during osteogenesis and peri-implant bone healing.

The present authors investigated the Paleogene deposits of the internal zone of the Magura Basin known as the Krynica Subunit or Krynica zone in Poland. These deposits crop out in the peri-Pieniny zone, in the area between Szczawnica and Krościenko. The oldest flysch deposits belong to the Paleocene - Lower Eocene Szczawnica Formation. This formation is covered by thin-bedded turbidites of the Eocene Zarzecze Formation locally with intercalations of the thick-bedded sandstones of the Krynica Member and Łęcko-type marls. The youngest rocks in this area belong to the Eocene-Oligocene Magura Formation. The Zarzecze Formation occupies a large part of the Krynica zone of the Magura Nappe border structure. Some deposits previously distinguished as the Szczawnica Formation were transferred to the Zarzecze Formation. The foraminiferal assemblages confirm the Eocene age of these deposits.

Objectives: Several occupations in developing countries lag behind in ensuring the safety of their workers in occupational settings. Lack of implementation of safety guidelines at workplaces can expose workers to health risks. In Pakistan, barbers are one of the un-regulated occupational groups. Low literacy, increased frequency of direct skin contact and blade/razors use can expose barbers to body fluids including blood of the customers. We conducted this study in order to determine hepatitis B virus (HBV) prevalence among barbers and their knowledge, attitude and practices in a peri-urban district of Sindh. Material and Methods: Three hundred eighty-five barbers from the Sukkur district were interviewed using a structured questionnaire. Blood samples were collected and tested for HBsAg. A scale was built to determine the proportions of responses to knowledge, attitude and practice items. Results: The prevalence of HBV among barbers was 2.1%. The barbers’ knowledge on HBV and its transmission routes was poor. The response to attitude items was good, except that only 35.1% of the participants agreed to have vaccination against HBV. The overall performance on the knowledge and practice scales was poor compared to the attitude scale on which 80% of the barbers performed well. Conclusion: The prevalence of HBV among barbers was lower compared to the available national figures for the prevalence among the general population.

Explanatory models on the urban expansion process have focussed mainly on the dynamic of cities in the developed countries that are characterized by a strong institutional framework, a culture of urban planning, and compliance with the rules. This paper analyses the phenomenon of urban expansion in three Latin American cities (Buenos Aires, Santiago de Chile and Mexico City), taking into account cities with a strong process of urbanization and where the local administration does not have enough control over the growth of cities due to the high rate of migration determining sub-urbanization, peri-urbanization, exo-urbanization, and counter-urbanization processes similar to developed countries. However, these processes may be related to hidden or displaced urbanization in rural areas of municipalities and metropolitan areas or intermediate cities due to the dynamics of urban consolidation. In every Latin American country, the participation and combination of these phenomena are different, although the results are similar: the advance of urban expansion with more segmented, disperse and distant patterns of large urban centres. This analysis determine the characteristics of the urbanization process taking into account physical and geographic aspects, urbanization trends and socioeconomic features in cities selected of Latin America and determines their impact determining the importance to formulate adequate policies that integrates environmental and socioeconomic aspects to achieve sustainable development in urban contexts.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to present the multidimensional phenomenon of urban sprawl in relation to the concept of the compact city and spatial policy. Intensive urbanization, which leads to spatial, social, environmental and cultural changes, has been observed in Polish cities and peri-urban areas for many years. The authors distinguish between the negative aspects of urban sprawl and the positive implications of the compact city. Spatial planning should be considered as a tool to manage urban and rural areas. In Poland the spatial planning system consists of three levels: national, regional, and local. It is assumed that spatial policy that contributes to improving cities according to the concept of the compact city can lead to a formation of sustainable urban structure in which society, economy, nature and cultural heritage harmoniously coexist. The case study of Nowe Zerniki estate in Wroclaw is analyzed. Nowe Zerniki exempli es the concept of the compact city and the brown eld investment ideas that can contribute to the transformation into a sustainable city. It also provides a model for creating modern urban development in accordance with the current architectural, urban, environmental and social requirements.

Introduction and objective. This study presents the results of comparative investigations aimed to determine microbiota that can occur in the oral environment in different human populations. The objective of the research was to identify pathogenic oral microbiota, the potential cause of health complications in patients of different population groups. Materials and method. The study included 95 patients requiring dental or surgical treatment; their oral cavity environment microbiota as risk factors of local and general infections were assessed. Results. In clinical assessment, differences occurred in oral cavity conditions between patients with malformations of the masticatory system, kidney allograft recipients and individuals without indications for surgical procedures. The presence of various pathogenic and opportunistic bacterial strains in oral cavities were revealed by direct microscopic and in vitro culture techniques. Conclusions. Colonization of oral cavities of patients requiring surgical treatment by the potentially pathogenic bacteria constitutes the threat of their spread, and development of general infections. Assessment of oral cavity infectious microbiota should be performed as a preventive measure against peri-surgical complications.
