This study analyses periurbanisation as a specific process of changes caused by the expansion of cities towards rural areas that are situated at a greater distance from the core city but still within the framework of the functional urban area. Peri-urban areas are determined by a particular set of urban and rural characteristics that coincide, but seem to be dominated by the rural aspect. By using a trans-disciplinary approach based on multivariate analysis, the authors identified peri-urban areas within three Polish metropolitan areas. Results show that the areas mostly predestined to be peri-urban are territories classified as rural gminas (communes) and rural areas of urban rural gminas, which are peripherally located in relation to the main city. In general, the findings are relevant from the point of view of policy-making because they provide new insights into the very complex nature of peri-urban areas.
W artykule dokonano analizy zjawiska peryurbanizacji jako procesu transformacji urbanistycznej zachodzącego na obszarach wiejskich leżących w strefie odziaływania miast i predysponowanych do rozwoju wielofunkcyjnego. Obszary te stanowią pewną strefę przejściową (mieszaną) między obszarami miejskimi a wiejskimi, która z jednej strony jest poddana silnemu oddziaływaniu procesów miejskich, a z drugiej - charakteryzuje się morfologią typową dla obszarów wiejskich i posiadają cechy wiejskie oraz, co szczególnie istotne, owe aspekty wiejskie są tutaj ich kluczowym wyznacznikiem. Na podstawie analizy wielowymiarowej wykorzystującej metody taksonomiczne przeprowadzono ocenę procesu peryurbanizacji w ramach jednostek terytorialnych wchodzących w skład trzech obszarów metropolitalnych Polski. Uzyskane wyniki wskazują, że symptomy tego zjawiska są zauważalne na terenie gmin wiejskich i części wiejskiej gmin miejsko-wiejskich, które zasadniczo umiejscowione są peryferyjne w stosunku do głównych miast badanych obszarów. Wyniki te są szczególnie istotne z punktu widzenia procesu kształtowania polityki wobec tych obszarów, ponieważ ukazują ich zróżnicowaną specyfikę.

Fossil charcoal is the primary source of evidence for palaeo-wildfires and has gained increasing interest as a proxy in the reconstruction of past climates and environments. Today, increasing temperatures and decreasing precipitation/humidity appear to correlate with increases in the frequency and intensity of wildfires in many regions worldwide. Apart from appropriate climatic conditions, sufficient atmospheric oxygen (>15%) is a necessary precondition to sustain combustion in wildfires. The Triassic has long been regarded as a period without evidence of wildfires; however, recent studies on macro-charcoal have provided data indicating their occurrence throughout almost the entire Triassic. Still, the macro-palaeobotanical record is scarce and the study of micro-charcoal from palynological residue is seen as very promising to fill the gap in our current knowledge on Triassic wildfires. Here, the authors present the first, verified records of micro-charcoal from the Triassic of the Germanic Basin, complementing the scarce macro-charcoal evidence of wildfires during Buntsandstein, Muschelkalk and Keuper (Anisian-Rhaetian). The particles analysed by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) show anatomical features typical of gymnosperms, a major element of the early Mesozoic vegetation following the initial recovery phase after the PT-boundary event. From the continuously increasing dataset of Triassic charcoal, it becomes apparent that the identification of wildfires has a huge potential to play a crucial role in future studies, deciphering Triassic climate dynamics. The first SEM study of micro-charcoal from palynological residue spanning the entire Triassic period, presented here, is a key technique to further unravel the charcoal record as a puzzle piece in palaeoclimate reconstruction.

Introduction. The peri-menopausal period is the time of many biological, psychological and social changes. The quality of life of women in this period may be conditioned by many factors, and analysis of these factors may indicate the optimum directions of prophylactic and educational actions. Objective. Analysis of selected predictive factors of the quality of life of women in the peri-menopausal period. Materials and method. The study covered 268 peri-menopausal women. The qualification criteria were: age 45–55, lack of mental disorders and diseases requiring hospitalization during the period of study. The study was conducted using standardized instruments: Women’s Health Questionnaire – WHQ, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and an author-constructed questionnaire. Results. The presented study of the quality of life showed that the women examined felt physically unattractive, lacking the full joy of life, and frequently experienced somatic complaints. Nevertheless, the respondents enjoyed life, had no constant feeling of anxiety and concern. Multi-factor analysis showed that the quality of life in the group of women in the study was affected by the following factors: level of depression, self-reported state of health, occurrence of menopausal symptoms, education level, and marital status. Conclusions. The quality of life of the peri-menopausal women examined was the highest with respect to depressive mood (DEP) and anxiety/depressed mood (ANX), while it was the lowest with respect to the sense of attractiveness (ATT), and somatic symptoms (SOM). In addition, in the group of women in peri-menopausal period the quality of life was conditioned: level of depression, self-reported state of health, occurrence of menopausal symptoms, education level, and marital status.

The study was conducted in West Shoa zone, Oromia, central Ethiopia, aimed with assessment of Production Systems and Husbandry Management of dairy cattle. The study area covered 180 households found in peri-urban ,urban and rural areas of Adaberga, Ejere and Metarobi districts which included 58 in rural areas 101 in peri-urban and 21 in urban areas of the districts. The information was collected from secondary data, group discussion, household level survey questionnaire, farm visit and personal observations. The data were analyzed using SPSS (version 20). The farming system of the study area was grouped into livestock production (12.78%), crop production (2.78%) and mixed type of production (84.46%). Average land holding for crop, grazing and forage and irrigated land in the study areas were 2.3 ha, 1.38 ha and 0.17 ha respectively. About 100% in rural, 33.55% in peri-urban and 0.65% in urban of households, who owned local dairy cows was used free grazing and fed crop residue as supplement. Similarly 22.58% of households in urban and peri-urban, who had both local and crossed dairy cows, were used free grazing system for local and industrial by products for crossed cow with crop residue. The remaining 6.45% of household in urban and 9.03% in peri-urban were used stall feeding of industrial by products with the mix of crop residue and atella. Water for drinking dairy cattle were accessed from pond (12.26%), rivers (61.9 %), pipe water (23.29 %) and stream (2.58 %). From total respondents about 87.1% and 11.6% of respondents were cleaned dairy barns in daily and weekly basis respectively whereas 1.29% of the respondents were not cleaned dairy barns all the time. The dairy production improvements must consider the available feed resources, farming system, socio-economic and husbandry management.

Peri-implantitis is a pathological condition occurring in tissues around dental implants, characterized by inflammation in the peri-implant connective tissue and progressive loss of supporting bone. In the treatment of peri-implantitis, a laser surgical technique is used. Lasers are a safe and gentle alternative to traditional dental tools. They allow oral surgeons and dentists to accomplish more complex tasks, reduce blood loss, decrease post-operative discomfort, reduce the chance of wound infection, achieve better wound healing and perform some procedures in close methods without access flap. The aim of the work was to determine the impact of laser surface treatment of titanium dental implants on its electrochemical behavior in artificial saliva at 37°C. The study used an Er, Cr: YSGG laser and diode lasers 810 nm and 980 nm for debridement of titanium implant surface. In the research, the thread on the surface of implant was scanned with the diode laser beam of energy 1, 1.25, 1.5 and 2 W, cw and Er, Cr YSGG: 1,5 and 2 W, pulse 30 Hz.

Explanatory models on the urban expansion process have focussed mainly on the dynamic of cities in the developed countries that are characterized by a strong institutional framework, a culture of urban planning, and compliance with the rules. This paper analyses the phenomenon of urban expansion in three Latin American cities (Buenos Aires, Santiago de Chile and Mexico City), taking into account cities with a strong process of urbanization and where the local administration does not have enough control over the growth of cities due to the high rate of migration determining sub-urbanization, peri-urbanization, exo-urbanization, and counter-urbanization processes similar to developed countries. However, these processes may be related to hidden or displaced urbanization in rural areas of municipalities and metropolitan areas or intermediate cities due to the dynamics of urban consolidation. In every Latin American country, the participation and combination of these phenomena are different, although the results are similar: the advance of urban expansion with more segmented, disperse and distant patterns of large urban centres. This analysis determine the characteristics of the urbanization process taking into account physical and geographic aspects, urbanization trends and socioeconomic features in cities selected of Latin America and determines their impact determining the importance to formulate adequate policies that integrates environmental and socioeconomic aspects to achieve sustainable development in urban contexts.

In the paper the issues related to the application of adaptive neuro-fuzzy controller for speed controller of an electrical motor are considered. Adaptive control structure with reference model (MRAS) is used. The standard controller is modified by the implementation of competitive Petri layers into its internal structure. The proposed modification improves the properties of the drive compared to the control structure with standard neuro-fuzzy controller. Theoretical considerations are confirmed by simulation studies experimental tests done on the laboratory stand.

The present article consists of two parts. First, we provide some general information on the life and views of Philolaus. This serves as an introduction to the second part which offers a new Polish translation of the most important ancient testimonies on Philolaus and the preserved fragments from his book On Nature (the latter are quoted along with the Greek original). According to the most recent research, these fragments are authentic and give an important insight into the Pythagorean and early Greek philosophy. The paper focuses on demographic and social changes caused by peri-urban development in rural areas in Latvia, Poland, and Germany after the system transformation began. The article analyses peri-urban development as a mostly rural phenomenon, and as a process of rural displacement. Rural development interacts with urban influences, changing the role and functions of rural areas. This is reflected by a departure from agricultural functions, more intensive construction activities and changes in land use. This also includes intensive socio-demographic and socio-cultural changes. Simultaneously there are significant population inflows, both urban and rural (from more peripheral rural areas), an increase in population density, changes of population structure etc. The paper shows that peri-urban development as a general rural trend began later in the countries of Eastern and Central Europe (after the transformation) than in Western Europe, but the processes and phenomena presently observed in Eastern and Western Europe are similar.

Przedstawiono główne etapy wczesnopaleozoicznej ewolucji perygondwańskich płyt litosferycznych w nawiązaniu do historii superkontynentu Rodinia, a zwłaszcza efektu neoproterozoicznego ryftowania, które doprowadziło do izolacji Gondwany, Laurencji, Syberii i Bałtyki. Wskazano z kolei na wczesnopaleozoiczne (późny kambr-wczesny ordowik) ryftowanie terranów awalońskich, które objęło m.in. północno-zachodnią i południową Polskę. Na tym tle zobrazowano również wczesnopaleozoiczne wydarzenia geotektoniczne w dalekowschodniej Azji.

Objectives: Several occupations in developing countries lag behind in ensuring the safety of their workers in occupational settings. Lack of implementation of safety guidelines at workplaces can expose workers to health risks. In Pakistan, barbers are one of the un-regulated occupational groups. Low literacy, increased frequency of direct skin contact and blade/razors use can expose barbers to body fluids including blood of the customers. We conducted this study in order to determine hepatitis B virus (HBV) prevalence among barbers and their knowledge, attitude and practices in a peri-urban district of Sindh. Material and Methods: Three hundred eighty-five barbers from the Sukkur district were interviewed using a structured questionnaire. Blood samples were collected and tested for HBsAg. A scale was built to determine the proportions of responses to knowledge, attitude and practice items. Results: The prevalence of HBV among barbers was 2.1%. The barbers’ knowledge on HBV and its transmission routes was poor. The response to attitude items was good, except that only 35.1% of the participants agreed to have vaccination against HBV. The overall performance on the knowledge and practice scales was poor compared to the attitude scale on which 80% of the barbers performed well. Conclusion: The prevalence of HBV among barbers was lower compared to the available national figures for the prevalence among the general population.

About twenty species of scleractinian corals are known from the shallow marine epicontinental deposits (Middle Triassic: Anisian, Muschelkalk) of Kraków-Upper Silesia region. Four of them require taxonomic revision. On the basis of partly preserved micromorphological features and the microstructure of the skeletons two of them are corrected, i.e. Coelocoenia? assmanni Weissermel, 1925 and C. exporrecta Weissermel, 1925, from Kamień Śląski, near Opole (Upper Silesia). Coelocoenia? assmanni was incorporated into Eckastraea prisca (Weissermel, 1925), family Eckastraeidae Morycowa, 2006, in Morycowa and Szulc (2006) and C. exporrecta is assigned to a new genus Opolestraea nov. gen., family Eckastraeidae.

Artykuł podejmuje problematykę rozwoju miast w kontekście powiązań tych jednostek osadniczych z obszarami bezpośrednio je otaczającymi, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem roli terenów podmiejskich, wykształcającej się podczas procesów suburbanizacji. Na podstawie literatury przedmiotu analizie poddane zostały funkcje obszarów podmiejskich, jakie pojawiają się w trakcie zachodzących procesów urbanizacji, co pozwoliło na wskazanie specyfiki współczesnej strefy podmiejskiej.
The article deals with the problems of urban development in the context of links between cities and their surrounding areas, with a particular emphasis on the role of suburban areas in suburbanization. Based on the literature of the subject, the functions of suburban areas, which appear during the processes of urbanization, have been analyzed thoroughly, which allowed the author to indicate the specificity of the present suburban zone.

Przedstawiając historię wprowadzenia do polskiego budownictwa technologii deskowań w postaci maszyn formujących, które stanowią najbardziej innowacyjny kierunek rozwoju w dziedzinie budownictwa betonowego, autorzy chcieli pokazać, jak firma PERI Polska przyczyniła się do unowocześnienia budownictwa w Polsce. Firma zbudowała system obsługi deskowaniowej, oparty na bazach logistyczno-remontowych i obsłudze budów zarówno pod względem logistycznym, jak i technologicznym. To podejście stało się fundamentem powszechnej dostępności deskowań systemowych, praktycznie w każdym zakątku kraju.
The authors, presenting the history of introduction of formworks technology implementation in the Polish building industry, with application of the forming machines being an innovative direction for development of the field of concrete-based construction, wanted to showcase the PERI Polska company’s contribution to modernization of the civil engineering field in Poland. The company constructed a system of formwork operation based on logistic and renovation centres. Secondly, company also deals with management of construction work sites, both logistically, as well as technologically. This approach became a foundation for common availability of systemic formworks, virtually all around Poland.
