    The dynamic development of the visual culture requires a revised approach and thinking about its role in didactic process and its presence in scientific research. The key goals of the author’s scientific interest in the different aspects of the visual aspect are as follows: to join the discussion on if and how to utilize photography in research on education, to rework the selected imaging techniques and analytical methods in this very context, and to carry out an interpretation of the visual material.     Opis:
    In the article, resorting to the phenomenological understanding of the 'social world', the authoress looks for the new possibilities of researching social worlds with the use of participatory photography, and by integrating research and citizen practice. One may speak of participatory photography when individuals or groups that would traditionally constitute the objects of observation take and interpret photographs representing significant parts of their lives and experiences themselves. Hence, as a research technique, participatory photography changes the perspective of cognition from the position of an outsider to the one of an insider. In this way, it allows insight, in accordance with the directives of interpretative sociology, into the subjective definitions of the observed situations, as constructed by the participants. Then, it provides the picture takers with the possibility of fully subjective expression concerning their own experiences, needs or goals, which is particularly important in the case of minority, marginalized, or excluded groups. However, this is when participatory photography goes beyond the limits of scientific knowledge, and into the area of social change, becoming a means of sociological intervention.

    Dynamiczny rozwój studiów wizualnych wymaga nowego spojrzenia na miejsce obrazu w badaniach naukowych. Celem artykułu jest włączenie się do dyskusji nad wykorzystaniem obrazu, a dokładniej – obrazu fotograficznego, w badaniach i w praktyce pedagogicznej w obszarze pedagogiki resocjalizacyjnej. Poddana namysłowi zostanie w tym kontekście użyteczność tzw. fotografii uczestniczącej (participatory photography) oraz doświadczeń badawczych z realizacji projektów wykorzystujących etnografię wizualną.
    Dynamic development of visual studies inquires a new approach towards image in scientific research. This article is aimed at joining the discussion concerning utilizing photographicvisuals in research and application of social rehabilitation pedagogy. Moreover, it evaluates the efficiency of both “participatory photography” and visual ethnography – and the associated experimental research in this very field.
