Opis:
The paper explores a wide range of ethnographic challenges – risky situations, methodological dilemmas, ethical and logistic problems ‒ that we encountered in our field research on most devoted fans of FC Twente Enschede. The analysis is focused on the variety of issues that come along with the process of exploration of largely closed communities of hardcore fans. By doing so, we want to provide some guidelines for those researchers who would want to undertake similar adventures ethnographic tasks in the future. The paper is centered around four major issues. The first one refers to the access to the hermetic world of football fans, while the second section is devoted to the different types of dangers that are linked with experiencing football fandom in the match day. The third one are the consequences of such radical ethnography for the identity of the researcher, resulting from carrying out the research in the mode of “complete immersion.” The fourth issue is the influence of the first three problems (gaining access to a closed group, dangers of full involvement in the actions of a group and changes within the identity of the “immersed one”) on the inner accuracy and outer integrity of the ethnographic description.

Participant Observation
Opis:
As more and more people around the globe join the transnational marriage market, marriage is becoming an increasingly global affair. Yet, transnational marriage migration has not received the scholarly attention it deserves. The present study is focused on post-migration experiences of twenty female marriage migrants from the former Soviet Union married to the U.S. nationals and lawful permanent residents. Through participant observation, the present study investigates the issues related to transnational partner choice and immigrant adjustment of these women. While the majority of informants identified the lack of local marriageable men as the major push factor, women tended to differ significantly with respect to the factors important for their choice of partner. While some stressed the importance of ethnicity and race of their spouse, others did not. The most important finding is that, in order to legitimize their marriage and resist gender oppression both in the domestic and public domains, women produced discourses shaped by the mainstream gender ideology that stigmatizes transnational marriage migrants.

This article aimed to suggest implications of learner-centered culture education through observation, participant observation, interviewing or ethnoscience in particular. Korean Arabic language learners were asked to watch two episodes of an Arab soap opera and compare and contrast their own culture from Arab culture based on what they had watched. Results of this study showed a desir- able direction, from insiders’ perspectives, for culture education utilizing the methodology of ethnography of communication. In order to establish Korean learners’ cultural identities as well as to equip them with cross-cultural compe- tence through which they can appropriately, accurately behave depending on situational context, this methodology of ethnography of communication into Arab culture educational practice should be made in the future.

Grounded Theory
Opis:
This participant observation research explores and examines the strategies that prisoners use to influence prison officers in an Asian prison setting. Grounded theory methodology is employed in the analysis process. From the study, eight strategies of influence are conceptualised: repetition, distraction, finding excuses, feigning ignorance, false compliance, hearsay, direct hit and spontaneous protest. They are further subsumed under three main categories of Enhancers, Trouble Shooters and Resistors. On the other hand, there are three categories of prison officers with respect to their responses to the eight strategies of influence – Idealists, Pragmatists and Authoritarians. In summary, this study serves three objectives. First, it provides a fresh perspective on how prisoners attempt to influence prison officers in their daily interactions. Second, it has demonstrated that data collection through covert participant observation can be done effectively without causing any harm to the stakeholders in a prison setting. Lastly, this study has implications for the development of theory, practice and future research in the area of penology.

The entire text is just a small fraction of a much larger work (still not finished) describing an attempt at an analysis of narrative reports interpreting reality. It is a very brief overview of Jacek Hugo-Bader’s ( JHB) idiosyncratic ways of rendering reality into his excellent very much field-work based narratives. The author of the text is of the opinion that the true meaning of the communicated text changes not only with the style of the text; the understanding of the actual meaning is based upon the profound knowledge of the interpreted information. There is only one way to get to the core of the true meaning of the described reality, it is done by the method known as participant observation. JHB knows that very well, and that is why all his narrative reports are preceded by extended field works.

Opis:
This article explores the methodological implications of investigating the collective identity of Fathers For Justice (FFJ). More specifically, a three-pronged approach of employing participant observation, interviews, and content analysis is assessed as the basis for understanding FFJ’s collective identity. This methodological approach reveals that meanings and practices related to post-separation and divorced fatherhood as well as the importance of children are a significant dimension of a FFJ collective identity. I conclude that an important part of the FFJ collective identity is not based on these activists perceiving themselves as self-serving (Fathers for Just Us), but as those seeking equality in terms of being recognized as continous parents after separation and divorce (Fathers are Us).

These reflections tackle a specific understanding of researching everyday life, which presents itself as a methodological demand, i.e., as a constitutive element of the new forms of inquiry. Consequently, the discourses revolve around the specificity of the anthropology of everyday life, as seen from various angles entailing third wave of sociology, cultural anthropology, and symbolic interactionism. It also elaborates on the methodological issues encompassing idiographic, emic characteristics of a qualitative inquiry that with relation to everyday life can provide a useful and cognitively attractive tool of reconstructing the world of different cultural groups.

Problem and Aim: The current article is an attempt to summarize the experiences gained from two foreign conferences, the 50th Japanese Academy of Budo Conference and the 2nd International Budo Conference at the Centenary Memorial Hall on Kansai University, which were recognized simultaneously as the VI International IMACSSS Conference, and the accompanying events, as well as 8th International Scientific Congress “Sport, People and Health”, organized by, among others, P.F. Lesgaft National State University of Physical Education, Sport and Health and the International Sambo Federation. The third of these scientific events was the 6th International Taekwondo Symposium for Taekwondo Studies, which was held in Muju, South Korea. Materials and Method: Due to the multidisciplinary approach nature of the conferences, content analysis of literature and extensive discourse analysis as well as the participant observation were used. Three case studies are also provided. Results and Conclusions: The indicated trips and scientific events offal within martial arts tourism, which is at the same time a journey for scientific study and exchange of knowledge related to martial arts research. It is therefore connected with scientific tourism as well as with congress and educational tourism. The described scientific events are relevant for research on martial arts tourism and for describing the process of institutionalizing the scientific research of martial arts and the recent history of the institutions in this area.

Następnie przedstawione zostały etapy i warunki obserwacji, tj. celowość, planowość, selektywność, dokładność i obiektywność.
Observation is a research method involving noting, collecting and interpreting data. The aim of the article is to present the benefits and limitations of using these methods in language lessons. In the introduction the author characterizes observation as a research method and briefly describes its main types. Next, the conditions of effective observation, i.e. purposefulness, schedule, selectivity, precision and impartiality, are presented. The main body of the article is devoted to participant (both public and disguised) observation in foreign (English) language lessons. Two studies making use of this research method are also described. In the summary, the advantages and disadvantages of this research method are listed.
