Opis:
The Late Jurassic shallow-water carbonates with intervening clayey-marly deeper-water deposits in the Holy Cross Mts. area formed over large bank of the elevated part of the Northern Tethyan Shelf during about 12 myr. They comprise three main successions (I, II and III) deposited partly in different environmental conditions, controlled by tectonic and climatic factors, and still preserved in the  north-eastern margin, the north-western margin and the south-western margin of the Holy Cross Mountains. The history of sedimentation is presented according to the concept of the large tectono-stratigraphic units COK, LUK and KVB, which owe their origin to variable rates of tectonic subsidence, as introduced by Kutek (1994) for the area of central Poland. The studied deposits of the COK megasequence cor- responding to the Upper Oxfordian and the Lower Kimmeridgian up to the Hypselocyclum Zone consist of coral limestones, various grained (including oolitic) limestones, and micritic limestones formed over the gradually enlarging shallow-water carbonate platform of the Holy Cross Mts. This platform was subsequently subdivided into two elevated areas, separated by a depressed zone in the middle, bounded by the Nowe Miasto–Iłża–Bałtów Fault Zone in the north-east and the Holy Cross Fault System in the south. The younger mega- sequence LUK with it strongly transgressive character marks the successive stages of the marine transgression which entered the central, lowered part of the area of the Holy Cross Mts. from the west, where it appeared already in the early Hypselocyclum Chron. It succes- sively spread across the Holy Cross Mts. area towards the north-east and south bringing everywhere the deposition of various oyster lu- machelles and marls with ammonites at the end of the Hypselocyclum Chron and during the Divisum Chron of the Early Kimmeridgian to the Acanthicum/Mutabilis Chron of the earliest Late Kimmeridgian. The following megasequence KVB is represented by the detrital lu- machelles and chalky limestones with nereineids of the Eudoxus Chron of the Late Kimmeridgian marking the development of still younger shallow-water carbonate platform in the uplifted areas in the north-eastern and possibly the south-western margins of the moun- tains, allegedly subdivided by a deeper area of sedimentation of marly deposits. The youngest Late Jurassic deposits of the Holy Cross Mts., are very fragmentarily preserved, mostly because of Early Cretaceous uplift and erosion. They suggest an initial episode of complete drowning of the carbonate platform which became covered by marly deposits during the Early Tithonian, and the subsequent restoration of shallow-water carbonate sedimentation at the end of the Early Tithonian.

Opis:
In this paper, two scenic caves, five selected karst rock forms, and five rock outcrops situated in the Ojców National Park and its protected zone area are the subject of comparative research, considered as very essential examples of geotouristic potential. Most of their karst forms differ between each other. These include Łokietek and Ciemna (Dark) cave, Kraków Gate, Rękawica and Igła Deotymy rock-cliff at Ojców, Duży Pochylec rock-cliff in Skała, and Maczuga Herkulesa rocky tower at Pieskowa Skała. Apart from them, outcrops of Quaternary calcareous tufa and rock falls at Ojców, an abrasion surface cutting Upper Jurassic limestones and covered with Cretaceous limestones and marls, Pleistocene loess at Januszowice, and the Duże Skałki (Big Rocks) former quarry of Upper Jurassic limestone at Czajowice were also studied. All of them are situated in the Silesian-Kraków Monocline. The caves, rock-cliffs and Maczuga Herkulesa rocky tower developed in the Upper Jurassic Oxfordian massive limestone. Their karst forms are diverse and picturesque. The other objects selected for research are also very interesting and important examples, displaying products of very complex geological processes. The comparative geotouristic potential evaluation of all 12 objects was made to meet tourists', educators' and investors' expectations and needs to increase their geotouristic development level. The statistical data of the annual number of visitors at the described two caves is also discussed. In general, interest in them as geotouristic abiotic nature objects has been growing regularly until today. They have become very widely known in Poland. Moreover, the Łokietek Cave, Kraków Gate rock-cliff and Maczuga Herkulesa rocky tower have become very popular worldwide.

Ophiuroids from the Upper Jurassic marine deposits (upper Oxfordian-lower Kimmeridgian) of southern and north-western Poland have been studied in two sections: Zalas quarry in the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland in southern Poland and Wapienno/Bielawy quarries in the Kuyavia region of north-western Poland. Described herein are nine taxa belonging to five genera (one new to science): Alternacantha Thuy and Meyer, 2013; Dermocoma Hess, 1964; Ophiobartia Loba gen. nov.; Ophioderma Müller and Troschel, 1840; Ophiotreta Verrill, 1899, and three families: Ophiacanthidae and Ophiodermatidae (both of Ljungman, 1867), and Ophiotomidae Paterson, 1985. Only a few representatives of some of these taxa have previously been reported from the Jurassic of Poland. One species, Ophiobartia radwanskii Loba, is established as new. The ophiuroid material recognized from both Polish localities is close to those described from Western Europe at family or even genus level. Both studied ophiuroid assemblages from Zalas and Wapienno/Bielawy show similarities, being dominated by the cosmopolitan species Ophioderma spectabile Hess, 1966, and by different species of Dermocoma. The recognized ophiuroid assemblages represent a rather shallow-water environment.

Field work has resulted in the recognition of a previously unknown outcrop in the vicinity of the Zengővárkony lime-kilns (Mecsek Mountains, South Hungary) which has provided a remarkably rich, but poorly preserved, uppermost Oxfordian – earliest Kimmeridgian fauna dominated by ammonites probably representing the Hypselum–Bimammatum zones. This is the first description and illustration of Oxfordian–Kimmeridgian ammonites from the Mecsek Mountains. The cephalopod fauna comprises Phylloceras div. sp., Holcophylloceras div. sp., Sowerbyceras sp., Lytoceras sp., Lissoceratoides erato, Trimarginites cf. trimarginatus, Glochiceras (Coryceras) cf. microdomum, Subdiscosphinctes sp., ?Wegelea sp., Passendorferiinae gen. et sp. ind., ?Orthosphinctes sp., Euaspidoceras cf. radisense, Aspidoceras sp., A. cf. binodum, Physodoceras sp. ex gr. altenense-wolfi, Lamellaptychus sp., Laevaptychus sp. ex gr. hoplisus-obliquus. The fauna has a Mediterranean character (55% of Phylloceratidae and Lytoceratidae) and is similar to the Tethyan assemblages of the Venetian Alps (Italy), and Palma de Mallorca. The spirochaete tube worm Spiraserpula spirolinites is also the first record from the Mecsek Mountains. The Saccocoma wackestone-packstone microfacies is recorded with benthic foraminifera (Lenticulina sp. and Spirillina sp.) indicating well oxygenated and nutrient-rich bottom conditions.

Opis:
A new ammonite assemblage from the lower beds of the Ogrodzieniec Quarry (southern Poland), the only Callovian section in the middle part of the Polish Jura Chain, is described. It includes the presence of Kosmoceras rotundum (Quenstedt), followed by the first example of co-occurring micro- and macroconchs in the genus Rollierites (R. biplicatum sp. n.) and above it, the association of Euaspidoceras sp. and Peltoceratoides (Parawedekindia) gerberi Prieser. Both R. biplicatum sp. n. (m and M; microconch and macroconch) and K. rotundum are assigned to the late Callovian Lamberti Zone. P. (P.) gerberi characterizes the early Oxfordian Cordatum Zone. This is the first record of the genus Rollierites from Poland. This study extends the upper age limit of the middle Callovian Rollierites up to the late Callovian Lamberti Zone. On the basis of morphological and stratigraphical data, it is tentatively proposed that the origin of the early–middle Oxfordian Tornquistes may be in the middle–late Callovian Rollierites, rather than the previously proposed late Callovian Pachyceras. However, this is speculation, as the present data set is insufficient.

Opis:
Numerous fully cored boreholes completed in the last years in central Poland (Kleszczów Graben area, southern border of the Łódź Depression) enabled the researchers to obtain new sedimentological data on the Oxfordian-Tithonian continuous sedimentary record in the Polish part of the northern Tethys shelf. Twenty-two facies were distinguished in the sedimentological succession. The facies represent the outer-, mid- and inner-ramp environments, including evaporitic episodes and palaeosols. The facies document that the Oxfordian-Lower Kimmeridgian (up to Hypselocyclum) carbonate ramp has evolved to the Upper Kimmeridgian-Tithonian carbonate-siliciclastic ramp. Among the Kimmeridgian deposits, numerous hardgrounds, tidal channel deposits and gravity flow sediments were identified. The Kleszczów Graben sedimentary succession is discussed along with the lithostratigraphical units known from the adjacent regions of southern and central Poland.

Study of the sections near the Mikhaylov (Ryazan region) has made it possible to improve the infrazonal subdivision of the Middle Callovian – Lower Oxfordian of the European Russia by ammonites. The Athleta Zone is the most complete in the studied sections. A sequence of kosmoceratid biohorizons (phaeinum, proniae, rowlstonense and kuklikum) is established here, as well as infrazonal units based on a phylogenetic sequence of species of the genus Funiferites. A study of the paleobiodiversity and frequency of occurrence of ammonites at different intervals of the section showed that the ammonite assemblages of the Athleta Zone are Sub-Boreal or Sub-Tethyan, while in the Lamberti Zone they are Boreal, and in the Lower Oxfordian they are Arctic. It is also shown that the change in ammonite composition in the sections coincides with the cycles of transgressions and regressions of Boreal basins. New species and subspecies of the ammonites Funiferites allae compressum, Cadoceras (Eichwaldiceras) intermedium, Brightia (B.) lominadzei, B. (B.) progzhellensis, B. (B.) eccentrtica, B. (Glyptia) canaliculata stankevitchae, Zieteniceras rarecostatum are described.

Opis:
Examination of seven ammonite-calibrated palynological samples across the Oxfordian/Kimmeridgian boundary in the Flodigarry sections at Staffin Bay, Isle of Skye, northern Scotland, has revealed dinoflagellate cyst assemblages in general terms in line with previous contributions. The sparse occurrence of Emmetrocysta sarjeantii, Perisseiasphaeridium pannosum and Senoniasphaera jurassica slightly above the proposed Oxfordian/Kimmeridgian boundary may be used as a palynological approximation of the base of the Kimmeridgian. The high abundance of tests resembling modern zygnemataceous chlorophycean alga Spirogyra in two samples above the Oxfordian/Kimmeridgian boundary horizon is probably associated with increased eutrophication and possible association with ‟green tides”. This bloom is proposed as a palynofloral proxy event for the boundary in the Flodigarry section. According to previous studies, various eutrophication events may have a correlation potential in Subboreal Europe.

This paper highlights the application of shallow non-invasive geophysics (electrical resistivity tomography) supported by sedimentological analysis applied to the investigation, description and interpretation of Upper Jurassic limestones exposed in the abandoned quarry near the village of Tomaszowice (Kraków Upland, southern Poland). Within this site, on the northern margin of the Krzeszowice Graben, a facies diversity of Upper Jurassic limestones can be observed. Field exposures were analysed to broadly characterize these Upper Jurassic limestones in terms of facies and microfacies development. Three facies types, including pelitic limestones, bedded limestones and carbonate gravity-flow deposits, composed of numerous microfacies, have been distinguished. ERT study using a dipole-dipole array has been carried out, along 5 parallel 110 m long profiles and along a perpendicular 110 m long profile, north of the Tomaszowice Quarry wall. The use of ERT in combination with the geological data allowed characterization and description of the geology at the research site as well as the determination of the lithological composition and internal architecture of the subsurface. Furthermore, the ERT interpretation results indicated the presence of a series of a secondary faults closely linked with the Krzeszowice Graben. The distribution of the gravity-flow deposits reflects the fault zone pattern of the graben and Late Jurassic fault activity.

Ancient deltaic facies are difficult to differentiate from tidally influenced shallow-marine facies. The Wagad Sandstone Formation of the Wagad Highland (eastern Kachchh Basin) is typified by offshore and deltaic facies with sedimentary characteristics that represent different conditions of hydrodynamics and related depositional processes. The study area, the Adhoi Anticline, constitutes a ~154-m-thick, shale-dominated sequence with progressive upward intercalations of bioturbated micritic sandstone and quartz arenite. Two thick Astarte beds (sandy allochemic limestone), with an erosional base and gravel blanketing, illustrate tidal amplification and high-energy stochastic events such as storms. Sedimentological characteristics document three depositional facies: an offshore, shale-dominated sequence prograding to proximal prodeltaic micritic sandstone and quartz arenite with sandy allochemic limestones, further prograding to mouth bars and abandoned channel deposits. The Wagad Sandstone Formation displays depositional environmental conditions that are dissimilar from those of coeval deposits in Kachchh sub-basins as well as on regional and global scales. This is attributed to a reactivation of the Kachchh Mainland and South Wagad faults which resulted in detachment and uplift of the Wagad block which then experienced prograding deltaic conditions.

Detailed study of all the ammonite collections gathered by the authors in the Staffin Bay sections has resulted in minor changes in the distribution of ammonite taxa, and slight modification of the position of the Oxfordian/Kimmeridgian boundary. Most significant is the discovery of Pictonia (Triozites) cf. seminudata which results in the placing of the stage boundary 0.16 m below the level formerly proposed. This study discusses the evolution of the Subboreal family Aulacostephanidae, and the Boreal family Cardioceratidae, indicating changes in the patterns of individual development in the evolution of both families in terms of heterochrony. The Oxfordian/ Kimmeridgian boundary interval shows major morphological changes in both ammonite families which were released from phylogenetic constraints by heterochrony, closely related to changes in environmental conditions.

Opis:
The sedimentary succession of the largest example of an Upper Oxfordian reef located in the southern part of the Polish sector of the northern Tethys shelf is described. Detailed sampling of exposures enabled characterization of the full succession of facies and microfacies diversity, documenting the reef evolution. The succession studied represents the maximum development of Upper Jurassic reefs in Poland corresponding to the upper Transversarium and the Bifurcatus zones, and followed by drowning of the carbonate platform in the lower Bimmamatum Zone. The reef succession comprises three types of facies, in which eight important microfacies types were distingushed, reflecting several stages of reef development. Mid-ramp, microbial-sponge frame-reefs represent a transgressive depositional sequence, up to tens of metres thick. A microbial-Crescentiella-ooid and ooid-intraclast-bioclast facies form numerous, decimetre- to metre-scale, sequences corresponding to higher-order, transgressive/regressive sea level changes. These facies represent a mid-inner ramp setting when sedimentation was dominated by bioclasts and non-skeletal grains (mainly ooids, oncoids, aggregate grains and intraclasts). The grains were stabilized by microbialites and cemented in early diagenesis, which created grain-dominated, microbial-cement supported reefs. As a result, both the mid-ramp, microbial-sponge frame-reefs and the shallow-water, grain-dominated, microbial-cement supported reefs form extensive, strongly lithified Oxfordian reef complexes in the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland.

The Jurassic / Lower Cretaceous sequence of the Strážovce section has been deposited in the central, axial part of the Zliechov Basin. Its most characteristic part – the Ždiar Formation consists of bedded siliceous radiolarian limestones and radiolarites. The radiolar¬ian assemblage typical of the North Tethyan Bioprovince lived during mid Oxfordian – Early Kimmeridgian in a warm upper part of the well stratified water column, partially near to the thermocline. Radiolarian abundance decreases upwards. Productivity decrease is quanti¬fied by the share of biogenic SiO2 as well as by high EFSi values during sedimentation of both the Ždiar and Jasenina formations. The geochemical data indicate relatively stable volume of the siliciclastic component of the rocks and a felsic character comparable to the Average Shale. The chemically homogeneous sedimentary signal indicates values of both CPA and EF ≤ 1 of Ti, Zr, Fe, Na, K, Rb, V and U. The values of EF > 1 signal enrichment of elements with affinity to carbonate minerals (Sr, Mn, P, Y, and Mg). Metal enrichment (Cu, Zn and Ni) indicates metal mobilization from other sources or due to carbonate diagenesis. In comparison to the Average Shale, decreased ΣREE´s and negative Cech and Euch anomalies could be regarded as a typical deep sea water signal. The differentiated REE record of higher calcareous beds of the Jasenina Fm. suggests basinal dysoxic conditions. The “bell-shape” of curves (normalized to shale) indicate that REEs were slightly affected by carbonate diagenesis. The Oxfordian / Kimmeridgian siliceous sedimentation in the Zliechov Basin was influenced probably more by monsoon-controlled input of land derived weathered material than by hydrothermal fluids from the bottom rifts.
