Opis:
Rocks deposited in the Oligocene Paratethys are recognized as one of the most important source rocks in the Flysch Carpathians. The Šitbořice Member (uppermost NP23 to lowermost NP25 zone) represents the upper part of the Menilite Formation in the Outer Flysch Carpathians of the Czech Republic. This paper presents results of bulk geochemical analysis, Rock-Eval pyrolysis and organic petrography. The geochemical evaluation, source rock potential, kerogen type and thermal maturity were studied using borehole cores. Based on the classification of Peters (1986), the evaluated Šitbořice Member is mostly classified as a “very good” source rock according to TOC and variable, mostly “poor” to “good” according to the petroleum potential. However, the average petroleum potential value assigned the member to “good” source rock which is in accordance with the TOC classification if the “live” TOC is used. A comparable distribution between kerogen type II and III has been indicated by HI. Unlike this, the organic petrography observations show the organic matter belongs to the kerogen type II which corresponds to the relationship of residual hydrocarbon potential versus TOC and HI calculated based on “live” organic carbon. Presumed immaturity was confirmed by Rr and Rock-Eval Tmax. Oxygen-restricted conditions ora dysoxic environment have been indicated by the TOC/TS ratio.

Opis:
W pracy opisano debryty kohezyjne warstw istebniańskich zachodniej części jednostki śląskiej Karpat zewnętrznych. Przedstawiona litofacja reprezentuje utwory silikoklastyczne, zbudowane z mieszaniny mułowo-piaskowego spoiwa i rozproszonego materiału okruchowego frakcji psefitowej. Największy udział miąższościowy debrytów kohezyjnych (12%) stwierdzono w warstwach istebniańskich Beskidu Śląskiego, znaczący udział odnotowano w Beskidzie Małym (7%), a najmniejszy w Beskidzie Morawskim (2%). Z największą częstotliwością opisana litofacja występuje w obrębie piaskowców istebniańskich dolnych, a regułą jest także pojawianie się w stropie łupków istebniańskich dolnych debrytów kohezyjnych z litoklastami o największych rozmiarach. Około 25% opisanych utworów zawierało w składzie fazy rozproszonej materiał egzotykowy (egzotykowe debryty kohezyjne), w których dominowały skały krystaliczne, przede wszystkim gnejsy, łupki krystaliczne i granitoidy. Wśród znacznie rzadziej obserwowanych egzotyków skał osadowych stwierdzono wyraźne zwiększanie się z zachodu na wschód udziału różnego rodzaju wapieni
Cohesive debrites of the Istebna Beds occur within the western part of the Silesian Unit of the Outer Flysch Carpathians. The lithofacies described represents siliciclastic deposits consisting of mud-sandy matrix and scattered, psephite-size clasts. The cohesive debrites originated from sediment gravity flows that were generated on the slope of sedimentary basin by mass-movements and were deposed as aprons by submarine, cohesive debris flows. The highest content of the cohesive debrites (12% of the succession thickness) has been recorded within the Istebna Beds of the Silesian Beskid Mts, the medium in the Beskid Mały Mts (7%) and the lowest within the Moravian Beskid Mts (2%). Most frequently the lithofacies presented occurs within the Lower Istebna Sandstones, while the cohesive debrites with the biggest lithoclasts occur within the top part of the Lower Istebna Shales. The exotic material with dominating crystalline rocks, mostly gneisses, schists and granitoids, makes up 25% of the described deposits (exotic cohesive debrites). Various types of limestones prevail among much rarer clasts of sedimentary rocks and the amount of the limestones distinctly increases going to the east

Opis:
The study focuses on a large olistostrome unit (~200 m thick and 4 km in strike-parallel extent) embedded in the Mid-Eocene shaly Hieroglyphic Formation of the Silesian Nappe, exposed in the Rożnów Lake area. Foraminifer biostratigraphy and petrographic comparisons are used to identify the provenance of olistoliths. The olistostrome is tripartite with respect of its olistolith composition. The lower part of the olistostrome abounds in olistoliths of sandstones derived from the Early Eocene turbiditic Ciężkowice Formation, whereas the middle part is dominated by olistoliths of Early Eocene bathyal mudshales. The upper part contains olistoliths of Middle Eocene turbiditic “banded sandstones”, known from the Hieroglyphic Formation and deposited in the bathyal zone above the CCD. The bathyal provenance of the olistostrome contrasts with the abyssal origin of the hosting green shales. The olistostrome unit is inferred to be composite, emplaced in the earliest Bartonian or at the Lutetian/ Bartonian transition by a series of at least three large debris flows that closely followed one another. Biostratigra- phical data and slump-fold vergence suggest resedimentation from the bathyal northern slope of the Silesian Cordillera that bounded the abyssal Silesian Basin to the south. Northward movement of the thrust-formed cordillera must have warped up the base-of-slope deposits of the Ciężkowice Formation, causing their gravita- tional collapse. This event destabilized the former lower-slope muddy deposits, resulting in a second phase of resedimentation by retrogressive slumping, which led to the collapse of mid-slope sandy turbidites. The slope failures involved contemporaneous Mid-Eocene sediment with an admixture of foraminifers derived from the upper slope or shelf margin and with exotic bedrock debris shed from the eroded cordillera crest. The catastrophic multi-phase emplacement of the olistostrome marked the last major thrusting pulse of the second (Late Cretaceous–Late Eocene) stage of tectonic evolution of the Outer Carpathian accretionary prism.

The zircon populations from the Campanian–Maastrichtian part of the Ropianka (Upper Cretaceous– Palaeocene) and Menilite (Oligocene–lower Miocene) formations in the northern part of the Skole Nappe in Poland were examined to evaluate interpretations of the external morphology of detrital zircon in provenance research. The advantage of the zircon typology method, supplemented with elongation measurements, is that it may be applied successfully to comparisons of euhedral zircon populations from sedimentary deposits of different ages and unknown provenance. The zircon typology method, along with elongation measurements of zircons, contributes valuable data that supplement conventional heavy-mineral analyses. It also permits the recognition of potential source areas and rock types for further comparative research.

Opis:
In the Paratethys Sea, isolation, the development of anoxia and stratification of the water column resulted in deposition of organic-rich sediments. In the Western Carpathians (Central Paratethys) these sediments now lie within the Menilite Formation. Whereas the Eocene-Oligocene transition has been studied in the Western Carpathians and is documented by dinoflagellate cyst assemblages, the dinoflagellate cyst stratigraphy of the Menilite Formation members has been uncertain. The Popiele Member and the Menilite Formation exposed at Aksmanice (Boryslav-Pokuttya Nappe, Western Outer Carpathians) reflect palaeogeographic changes at the beginning of the Oligocene. These previously studied deposits have been assigned to lithostratigraphic units, though without biostratigraphic documentation. The age of the Menilite Fm. in the Carpathian sedimentary succession is particularly interesting due to the diachronous character of the facies development. In this study we provide biostratigraphic data based on well-preserved organic-walled dinoflagellate cyst assemblages. The marker taxa recovered indicate a Rupelian age (Early Oligocene) for the Menilite Fm. A different assemblage occurs in the Popiele Member underlying the Menilite Fm. Here, the dinoflagellate cysts are more diverse and abundant, and represented by typical Eocene taxa attributed to Areosphaeridium spp. and Charlesdowniea spp. The Popiele Member may be assigned to the Priabonian (Late Eocene).

The development of fault pattern in the Silesian Nappe (Central Carpathian Depression) in the eastern part of Polish Outer Carpathians is outlined, from field observations and interpretation of air photos and radar images. Fault slip analysis and palaeostress reconstruction was applied to determine different systems of strike-slip, reverse and normal faults and the relative age of each system was determined. The results show a consistent evolution of fault systems which occurred as several episodes. Some of these episodes are local but others represent a regional pattern of faulting across the whole Polish Eastern Outer Carpathians. The beginning of fault evolution took place in Late Oligocene to Late Miocene times. The oldest phase is represented by reverse and thrust faults of system R1 with SW-NE compression; a younger phase involves origination of strike-slip faults belonging to system S1 (with the same direction of compression). Reverse (system R2) and strike-slip (system S2) faults were formed locally during a N-S compressional event. Dextral strike-slip faults of system S3 with simultanous opening of a dextral set of fault system S1 originated subsequently. The youngest events are represented by normal faults N1, N2, and N3 systems during NW-SE, and SW-NE to N-S extension.

Detrital fragments of automorphic tourmaline crystals are commonly incorporated in tests of simple agglutinated foraminifera that lived in the deep-marine Carpathian turbidite basin, in which deposition of the Hieroglyphic beds (Eocene) took place. Such grains were observed in the tests of 37 taxa representing 20 species. However tourmaline occurs in the Carpathian Flysch sediments as an accessory mineral, still it was selected by the foraminifera as the only heavy mineral to be incorporated in their tests. The proportion of tourmaline-bearing specimens in an assemblage usually amounts to a few percent, but may reach 29% in extreme cases. The particular preference for tourmaline segregation and incorporation in the test walls is shown by the following genera: Psammosiphonella, Reophax, Bathysiphon and Nothia.

Opis:
Conventional and high-resolution analyses of heavy minerals from the gravity flow-deposited sandstones of the Campanian–Maastrichtian interval of the Ropianka (Upper Cretaceous–Paleocene) and Menilite (Oligocene) formations of the Polish Carpathians display similar compositions in terms of mineral species. Zircon, tourmaline, rutile, garnet, staurolite and kyanite belong to the main constituents in both formations. Apatite is common in the Ropianka Fm., while the Menilite Fm. almost lacks this mineral. Furthermore, individual hornblende grains were found in the Ropianka Fm., while andalusite is present only in the Menilite Fm. The Ropianka Fm. is relatively richer in zircon, tourmaline, garnet and apatite, while the Menilite Fm. contains more staurolite and kyanite. Zircon and tourmaline colour and morphological varieties are similar in both formations. The similarities of the heavy mineral assemblages studied suggest origin of these minerals from lithologically similar rocks. Negative correlations between the zircon + tourmaline + rutile (ZTR) values and the content of garnet and staurolite in the Ropianka Fm. may indicate, to a large extent, first-cycle delivery of garnet and staurolite to the formation. Negative, but low, correlation valid only for ZTR and garnet and positive correlations for ZTR and staurolite and kyanite in the Menilite Fm. suggest delivery of these minerals from sedimentary rocks or/and palimpsest sediments. The data obtained on mineral relationships and their morphology suggest mixed first-cycle and recycled provenance of the heavy minerals studied. Additionally, the first-cycle material input seems to be larger during the Ropianka Fm. sedimentation, while during the deposition of Menilite Fm. the contribution of material delivered from erosion of recycled sediments appears more prominent. The heavy mineral evidence suggests a change at the northern margin of the Skole Basin from an immature passive margin with a high relief during sedimentation of the Campanian–Maastrichtian part of the Ropianka Fm. to a mature passive margin with a low relief during sedimentation of the Menilite Fm.

In the Polish sector of the Magura Nappe, along the front of the Pieniny Klippen Belt, strongly tectonized calcareous flysch up to 1000 m thick is exposed. Previously these deposits, composed of thin- to thick-bedded flysch, with a packet of Łącko-type marls, have been included into several Paleocene/Eocene formations, e.g., the Szczawnica Formation. This formation contains a poor assemblage of agglutinated foraminifera and a relatively rich assemblage of calcareous nannoplankton, with abundant reworked species. The youngest species give evidence of the NN2 Zone (Lower Miocene). Additionally, in three profiles (Szlachtowa, Knurów and Waksmund) of the Kremna Fm., Early Miocene foraminifera have been recognized. This research documented that during the Burdigalian, at the front of Central Western Carpathians, there still existed a residual marine basin probably up to 100 km wide. These deposits also contain thick packages of exotic carbonate conglomerates derived from the SE, previously regarded as the Jarmuta Formation.

This paper concerns the identification of neotectonics structures on the basis of topographic maps analysis. The investigation parameter is valley floor width (VFW), this being applied to the drainage basin of the BeCva river, Czech Republic. It is firstly necessary to determine the theoretic profile of the VFW downstream increment. For its construction the magnitudo was used (Shreve, 1966). Then, the differences between the real VFW and the theoretical VFW were calculated. The differences were classified according to the associated bedrock lithology. The sections where differences were widely divergent from the average are assumed to be have been affected by neotectonics.

The oldest flysch deposits are the leading theme of the planned "Silesian-Moravian-Żywiec Beskid" Geopark. The geopark is located in the area of Beskid Śląski Mts. and Beskid Żywiecki Mts. in the territory ofPoland. This is a region of the occurrence of a number of tectonic units of the Outer Carpathians, including Pieniny Klippen Belt, Magura Nappe (with Krynica, Bystrica, Raca and Siary tec- tonic-facies zones), Fore-Magura Unit, Silesian Nappe and Subsilesian Nappe. Geodiversity of this area is defined by well-exposed sections ofrocks. They were the sites ofclassical geological work in the 19th century. Within the geopark boundaries, there are the type localities of the following tectonic units: Silesian Nappe, Fore-Magura, Bystrica and Raca units, as well as Jaworzynka, Bystrica, Vyhylovka, Vendryne and Cieszyn Limestone formations, Malinowska Skala Conglomerate, Mutne Sandstone, and Cisownica Shale members. Landslides, attractive geomorphologic landforms (e.g., highest peaks of the Beskidy Mts., providing magnificent views), waterfalls, diversified river valleys, tors, caves as well as places associated with the history and tradition of this region represent geotouristic attractions with a high potential. They will be included in the network ofgeosites protected within the planned geopark. Analysis ofthe geopark area indicates a high degree of variability of natural values, especially its geodiversity and richness of the historical-cultural heritage. The preservation and protection methods are also diversified. This region represents unique geoenvironmental and historical values on the European scale, therefore offering good chances for establishment of geopark. The documentation of geosites has already been gathered at this stage of work. The information requires only updating, minor additions and construction ofa unified database. The evaluation ofthe current touristic infrastructure have also brought very positive results; the area isfrequented by millions oftouristsfrom Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia and other countries.

The authors reconstructed models of parameters that calibrate petroleum systems of folded and thrust tectonic covers in the Outer Carpathians: subsidence histories, paleothermal parameters and initial hydrocarbon source potential of flysch series in 367 synthetic sections located along five regional traverses which image the subsurface geologic structure in the transfrontier zone of the Polish and Ukrainian Carpathians. In the synthetic sections, the degree of organic-matter thermal transformation and the expulsion efficiency factor were modeled. Two-dimensional expulsion models, obtained through geometrical interpolation of the expulsion efficiency factor, document prospective zones for hydrocarbon exploration in structural-facial units that form the study area.

These caves form in thick-bedded sandstones with dips no more than 35 , as a result of the opening of crevices present in the rock massif; this process is related to gravitational mass movements. Comparison between the direc-tions of joints and the directions of passages of fifteen selected caves shows that caves occuring in flysch rocks may form along all joint sets. The joint network of the researched area is composed of a two fold-oblique sets -Sp and SL; cross-fold set - T; and three fold-parallel sets - L, L’ and L”.

Opis:
Dowiązano i skorelowano granice w obrębie fliszu i w platformowym podłożu.
Interpreted seismic time sections in relation to available borehole data and extensive literature on geological structure of this part of the Carpathians, have served as the basis for developing geodynamic model of the Carpathian orogeny development in the area Wadowice - Babia Góra. Geological identification of seismic boundaries and their correlation on seismic sections were performed in the GeoGraphix system (Landmark Graphics Co.) Boundaries within the flysch and in the platform basement have been tied and correlated. Faults formed during the Hercynian Orogeny in the Carboniferous and the early Permian, strike-slip faults of N-S orientation, formed during the Alpine orogeny and normal faults of E-W orientation, which had formed during the last thrust of the Carpathians to their position have been identified.
