Opis:
Cultural otherness is an inherent feature of the literary genre of reportage. It is perceived as a cognitive value due to the presence of culturally marked elements. Hence, a preferable term is “otherness” than “strangeness”. Frequently, cultural otherness is accompanied by linguistic otherness, thanks to direct borrowings used both in source and translated texts. The subjects of perceiving and consciously creating otherness are the author of the reportage and the target reader projected by him, expecting to gain interesting information about the part of reality which is the object of the reporter’s description. In the process of translation, the translator also becomes an additional subject as the recipient of the source text and the author of the translation. The positive approach towards reception of otherness in Kapuścinski’s reportages as well as the way of presentation of such phenonema in the studied texts (through the use of explication) makes translators use exotisation as a well-thought-out strategy

Opis:
This article attempts to discuss the concept of constructing “otherness”, the techniques to be used and the role of educational systems. Ethiopia as amultilingual and multicultural country is the basis of discussion for this concept. hence, the writer pays due attention to answer the question: how far the Ethiopian educational policy is designed to reflect diversified group interests fairly, if not equally? Therefore, major theoretical assumptions on construction of “otherness” and some practical experiences of the Ethiopian educational systems are thoroughly examined in this paper.

Research on the adulthood of people with disabilities is still scarce. In the article the results of a qualitative research project involving the use of three individual, indepth semistructured interviews and a narrative analysis approach are presented. The authors show the everyday life of adults with disabilities, which is not thrown into the scheme, because it distances itself from stereotypes. Positive self-perception of these people – depicted in narratives – is visible in their perception of adulthood, which is implemented in the same way as in the case of the able-bodied, so that’s the adulthood with prospects of self-realization. Difficulties implied by disability become insignificant.

Opis:
The article examines the figure of the spy—alongside themes related to espionage—as employed in two books by the Northern Irish writer Ciaran Carson (1948–2019): the volume of poems For All We Know (2008) and the novel Exchange Place (2012). Carson’s oeuvre is permeated with the Troubles and he has been hailed one of key writers to convey the experience of living in a modern surveillance state. His depiction of Belfast thematizes questions of terrorism, the insecurity and anxiety it causes in everyday life, as well as the unceasing games of appearances and the different ways of verifying or revising identities. In Carson’s later work, however, these aspects acquire greater philosophical depth as the author uses the themes of doubles, spies, and makeshift identities to discuss writing itself, the construction of subjectivity, and the dialogic relationship with the other. Taking a cue from Paul Ricoeur’s and Julia Kristeva’s conceptions of “oneself as another,” the article examines how Carson’s spy-figures can be read as metaphors for processes of self-discovery and identity-formation, tied to the notion of “self-othering.” Carson employs the figure of the spy—who juggles identities by “donning” different clothes or languages—to scrutinize how one ventures into the dangerous territory of writing, translation and love, as well as to reconsider notions of originality and self-mastery. Ultimately, Carson conceptualizes literature as specially marked by deceptions and metamorphoses, defining in these terms the human condition.

Magnus, a novel from Sylvie Germain published in 2005, is a narration made up of several marks of hybridity – structural, generic and discursive hybridity. Those marks are not simply formal but emphasize the necessity of a true presence towards the world and others. The itinerary of the character is a spiritual one, and the novel reveals the part played by reading and writing in the reconsideration of our relationship towards the world and the other people.

This article analyzes Stanley Kubrick's film The Shining (1980) in its complex textuality, where ghosts, spectrality and repetition compulsion play a relevant role in defining the symbolic space of a contemporary gothic story about madness, fear, evil traces and perception. In a context where time is out of joint, and where evil laws try to frame human presences in a dimension of distress, spectral presences shape a ghostly world where fears and violence are defeated by a special mental strength, the 'shining'.

Opis:
In Simone de Beauvoir’s œuvre, the problem of love and the relationship with the Other turns out to be fundamental. The need to realize one’s own desires forces the individual to open for the Other who – instead of making the relationship more attractive – brings about its breakup. The Author raises this issue in terms of androgyny interpreted as a relationship between two people, which is possible only in the spheres of total freedom and reciprocity, both spiritual and sexual, revealing an inherent influence of other people on our lives. The texts by Beauvoir, whose idée fixe is a search for the wholeness, enable one to understand that otherness is also understood as a struggle to change the perception of femininity and of independence. The other also fascinates us by difference. It encourages one to get to know oneself, one’s possibilities and limitations, as well as one’s identity. By looking into the eyes of the other (like in a mirror) a person has an opportunity to create a new reality, thereby rejecting stereotypes and a traditional value system. Thus, finding a sense of life and realizing existing differences become possible. The multidimensionality of the concept of otherness enables the critic to present the writer’s original vision, propagating the individual development and autonomy, defined by relationships with others and, at the same time, by his or her pursuit of an existential fullness with another human being.

The article examines the narrative of the diary „My Siberian Year” written by one of the first women-anthropologists-Maria Czaplicka. In this paper the perspective refers to the experience of strangeness/otherness as a constitutive part of any fieldwork. This category may be analyzed within different dimensions, which concurrently shed light on the nature of the relationships between people, culture and environment.

The text is an attempt to present the phenomenon of experiencing otherness by adult people with mental disability. The author presents survey results which are a part of a bigger project researching the microworlds of adults with intellectual disability. In the research, both as the strategy of collecting the research materials and the method of their analysis, the methodology of constructing grounded theory by Kathy Charmaz was used. 14 adults with intellectual disability, attendees of the Community Centre of Self-Help, were researched, as well as 14 attendants (including parents and the centre’s employees). The results showed otherness as a specific phenomenon experienced by all the surveyed people with intellectual disability.

Opis:
At the beginning, the author presents some basic intuitions determining the necessity for philosopher’s reflections on not only numerical singularity, but also individuality. Then he considers briefly four selected types of individuality, namely: anything existing, the universe, a person and the Absolute. Nevertheless, for different reasons, in each of these cases it is possible to assume an impossible to fully express entity, that is, individuality. The next part develops the idea of a person’s individuality which stays directly linked with his or her permanent act of self-creation. The essence of the act would lie in a radical distinction between the person and any other human being as well as in generating the own, absolute personal otherness. At more accurate, largely speculative characteristics of this act it turns out to be necessary to redefine such categories like duty, responsibility, trust.

In this article I present some basic modes of “domestication” of the religious otherness – “idolatrous” polytheism, in this case – in the conquest of the New World. Selected examples: Cortés, Bernal Díaz del Castillo, José de Acosta and Bartolomé de Las Casas, were used in order to determine the key patterns of capturing the indigenous religions, starting from appropriating the other, then establishing of radical difference and finally its denial – not through assimilation but through discovering the inner foreigness. I use the notion of “extraordinariness” (Le Goff) as the main analytical category. My theoretical perspective is Wolfgang Welsch’s proposal to reject the ‘old’ way of thinking in the terms of own – foreign and replace it with the opposition of close – distant.

René Girard has been critiqued for failing to ground his theory of mimetic desire in a discursive and philosophically robust framework. In order to meet this objection, I argue that René Girard’s theory of mimetic desire can be successfully motivated by a phenomenology of the emptiness of selfhood and intersubjectivity. After grounding Girard’s theory in a phenomenology of no-self, I reconstruct Girard’s argument that violence is a necessary consequence of internally mediated mimetic desire.
