    The paper deals with contacts between Polish King and Lithuanian Grand Duke Stefan Báthory (1576–86) and the Serbian monks from Hilandar Monastery on Mount Athos. The contacts are presented based on a model letter found in the letter-writing manual from the Hilandar Archive (no. 153). The monks asked Báthory for the introductory and travel letters for their journey to Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, where they would search for new benefactors [ktetors] and financial assistance from the Ruthenian Orthodox Christians. The model letter, supported by other written sources, also sheds light on the general characteristics of contacts with Catholic Polish-Lithuanian authorities and other rulers who mediated intercultural relations between the Ruthenian Orthodox Church and the Serbian (and Balkan in general) monastic milieus. These relations had a special significance for the group (confessional-cultural) identity of the Ruthenian Orthodox Christians and their tradition in the Counter-Reformation climate due to the proselytic policy and polemical attacks in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

    Artykuł prezentuje jeden z najwcześniejszych przykładów prawosławnego piśmiennictwa polemicznego epoki unii brzeskiej – Kalendarz rzymski nowy Herasyma Smotryckiego. Utwór ten ukazał się drukiem w zbiorze tekstów tegoż autora, znanym powszechnie jako Klucz królestwa niebieskiego (1587), i jest uznawany za pierwszy w historii literatury ukraińskiej pamflet. W charakterystyczny dla wypowiedzi satyrycznej sposób Smotrycki komentuje reformę kalendarzową Grzegorza XIII (1582), prezentując jednocześnie stanowisko Kościoła wschodniego. Nie wdając się w dyskusje na temat naukowych podstaw reformy, opisuje jej społeczne konsekwencje na ziemiach ruskich Rzeczypospolitej, zamieszkałych przez ludność prawosławną, i przedstawia ośmieszającą krytykę katolickiego dyskursu jedności. Jego dzieło, napisane w przystępnej i atrakcyjnej dla ruskiego czytelnika formie oraz zrozumiałym dla niego językiem, jest przykładem udanego wykorzystania metod perswazji i argumentacji stosowanych w zachodnioeuropejskiej publicystyce religijnej doby reformacji i kontrreformacji.
    This paper discusses the satirical pamphlet Kalendar rymskyj novy [The New Roman Calendar], part of Herasym Smotrytsky’s book better known as Kliuch tsarstva nebesnoho [The Key to the Heavenly Kingdom, 1587], which is the first printed example of Orthodox polemical literature in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. In his pamphlet, Smotrytsky shows the negative social consequences of the calendar reform by Pope Gregory XIII (1582) and categorically rejects the new calendar. Instead of scientific argumentation, he uses satire with irony, sarcasm, exaggeration and anecdotes. He also writes in a language close to the vernacular. All of this made his work understandable and convincing for Orthodox Ruthenians (Ukrainians and Belarusians) and accessible to the broad masses.

    Opis:
    The article investigates the interconfessional polemical literature as a valuable source offering an insight into the major values of the society of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the 16th–17th centuries. These texts also help understanding phenomena other than the merely religious ones. In the debate, juridical and political arguments were used too. We focus on the case study of Hipacy Pociej’s Antirrēsis (Ruthenian: 1599; Polish: 1600), written in response to Marcin Broniewski’s Apokrisis (1597). Pociej, who had an outstanding political career before becoming a Uniate bishop, mastered these arguments perfectly. His work is imbued with the mentality of the communitas nobilium, which also played a part in his lexical choices.
