Narratives of personal histories of “bitterness” told by peasants who refer to themselves as “suffering people” (shouku ren) occupy a significant place in oral accounts of rural life in China in the second half of the twentieth century. They constitute both an important academic resource and an independent field of knowledge production. The social dimensions of “suffering” establish an organic link between the everyday lives of ordinary people and broader social history, such that the deep roots of “suffering” can only be apprehended from the perspective of social structures and power relationships. Seeing the everyday practices of ordinary peasants as an integral part of “civilisation” links peasants’ life histories with the macro processes of social history. It gives the mundane, even trivial, experiences and accounts of peasants’ lives an extraordinary significance as organic components of the grand historical narrative.

Autor stawia w tekście pytania o to, czy możliwe są wspólne narracje na temat przeszłości miasta, czy możliwa jest wspólna pamięć o mieście? Laboratoryjnym przykładem odtwarzania pamięci o mieście jest sytuacja wywiadu jakościowego, podczas którego przedstawiane są wydarzenia z historii miasta. Celem przyjętym przez autora jest zbadanie, czy tym co „skleja” rozproszoną pamięć o mieście jest m.in. zdroworozsądkowa geografia, traktowana jako część samo narzucającej się refleksji o rzeczywistości. Odwoływanie się do przeszłości miasta, wskazywanie na istotne punkty orientacyjne pełni być może taką samą rolę, jak opisywane przez etnometodologów rytuały potwierdzania wspólnych sensów i inne praktyki podtrzymywania interakcji [Garfinkel, 1967, Sacks, 1972, Cicourel, 1984]. Problemy te zostały omówione w odniesieniu do projektu badawczego zrealizowanego w metodologii oral history pt. „Relacje świadków Grudnia 1970 w Szczecinie”.
The author asks in the article whether common narrations and common memory of the city are possible. A laboratory example of reconstructed memory is the qualitative interview during which a city’s history is presented. The purpose of the article is to examine if common-sense geography can “glue together” the dispersed memory of the city. Recalling a city’s past, pointing out the important places and landmarks may act as confirmation of common meanings and other interactive methods, such as the et cetera principle, described by ethnomethodologists [Garfinkel 1967, Sacks 1972, Cicourel 1984]. These problems are discussed with evidence from research project “Witnesses of December 1970 in Szczecin”, carried out according to the methodology of oral history.

 In her narrative Bronisława Guza (born in 1929) talks about the life of her family in Obertyn – a small town in the former Stanisławów province – starting from 1930s and WW2 period, to the post-war years when she came to Lower Silesia. In her recollections she describes places that played an important role in the town’s life: Saints Peter and Paul’s church and priests serving in it, a convent belonging to the Congregation of the Servants of the Holiest Virgin Mary of the Immaculate Conception from Stara Wieś, along with an orphanage run by the nuns (which she used to attend as a child), the market square on market days, various shops, houses, a mound made to commemorate the battle of Obertyn in 1531, as well as a cross standing on its top. She tells us about relations between Obertyn’s inhabitants: Poles, Ukrainians and Jews – how they established and maintained close bonds, together celebrated holidays and weddings, participated in funerals, and so on – and about mutual respect for other denominations and customs. Bronisława Guza’s story of WW2 contains recollections of the Soviet and German occupations, circumstances of the Soviet re-entering at the end of March and at the beginning of April 1944, and of the activity of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists on these territories. The key moment for this time in history was in 1945, when a vast majority of the Polish community of Obertyn was resettled to the Western Territories. Bronisława Guza and her family ended up in Siedlce near Oława, where initially she lived together with the German, evangelical community of the village. The inhabitants settled down in the new place and tried to adapt to the new life conditions.

Feliks Badowski (born on 17th May 1923 in Warsaw) was a soldier who fought in ZWZ-AK (Union of Armed Struggle-Home Army). His account concerns his education and work, war experiences and life after the war. This witness describes in great detail his work in industry in occupied Warsaw and his struggle for independence in the frames of ZWZ-AK. He also mentions his studies within Towarzystwo Kursów Technicznych (Technical Courses Association). A vast part of the narrative is devoted to Feliks Badowski’s participation in the Warsaw Uprising – he tells us, amongst others, about preparations for armed resistance against the occupier, how the army units were organized in the first days of fighting, and about the attack on the citadel. A lot of focus is given to partisan activity in Kampinos Forest – the witness explains, for example, the structure of partisan forces, their help for the fighting Warsaw, sabotage actions and how they received deliveries by airdrops. This account gives us also some insight into the way the inhabitants of villages and towns near Warsaw perceived the Warsaw Uprising. Also, it relates the marching-out of partisan units and their way towards the Świętokrzyskie mountains, during which – near Żyrardów – they were defeated by Germans. A separate part of the narrative is devoted to reminiscences from post-war Wrocław – Feliks Badowski explains why he came to the Lower Silesia and pictures relations in his new place of work – Pafawag (Państwowa Fabryka Wagonów – National Rail Carriage Factory).

The article presents main trends that have been present in oral history of Anglo-Saxon, German and Polish cultures since the 1960s till today. The thesis of the article is comprised in the text’s structure: an account of the history and methodological variety of oral history in terms of definitions given – now or in the past – to a person being interviewed. According to the author, these definitions reflect epistemological horizons of researchers’ expectations, the ethical aspects of their research subject choices and ethical status of oral history in contemporary culture.“Informer” is a term taken from sociology. It is typical for the days when oral history tried to become part of the modernist paradigm dominant in the 1960s and 70s. A crisis in epistemology in 1980s shifted the scientific interest to linguistic aspect of cognition, introducing the term “narrator” to oral history. The author discusses two trends in which this word appears along with a category of “experience”: a German biographical method which was popular also in Poland, and a method of research formulated under the influence of Alessandro Portelli, in which the main role is played by relations between a narrator/speaker and a historian. On the other hand, the concept of “a witness to history”, predominant in Polish oral history, represents specific epistemological and ethical paradoxes which have their origins in circumstances, in which this domain of “civic historiography” was born. Finally, the author focuses on ethical issues of conducting an interview, and a problem of transcribing and editing an oral narrative.

The article is divided into three parts. The first one (“The past is a foreign country [L.P. Hartley] History and Anthropology. Meeting points) is devoted to bringing history and anthropology of culture closer together, since in both of them a great deal of attention is paid to the issue of memory. In the second part (Problems with relations), by means of examples from ethnographical studies, we are presented with some of the difficulties that memory researchers can encounter when doing fieldwork. The last part of the text contains theoretical ponderings on the matter of memory as presented from the perspective of anthropology of culture. The problem of memory is discussed: the way it is understood by today’s anthropologists and what role it plays in the cognitive processes (memory as a source of anthropological knowledge, memory as a subject of knowledge, memory as a cognitive tool).

This text shows changes in the way oral history has been perceived in the last 10 years in Poland, what projects are being conducted at the moment and where research on this subject is going. Contemporary research in oral history has taken a few directions. First, this method is treated as a source prompted by historians and used in by them in research activity. Second, an interest taken in this method is manifested in methodological and historiographic reflection. The third group is research on archiving audio-visual documents. Another area of interest for oral history is widely understood education and popularization of this method.  In Poland there are a few serious institutions/centrers that focus their research and work methods on oral form of information, such as Narodowe Archiwum Cyfrowe (National Digital Archive) and Centrum Edukacji Obywatelskiej (Center for Civic Education). Widely available are internet sources such as „Uczyć się z historii” (“To Learn from History”) and „Świadkowie Historii” (“Witnesses to History”), which gather oral evidence from people all over Poland. The article discusses also activities of the KARTA Center from Wrocław, “Brama Grodzka – Teatr NN” (Grodzka Gate – NN Theatre) Center and Studio Historii Mówionej (Oral History Center) from Lublin. The Memory and Future Institute from Wrocław is a thriving institution as well. An analysis has also been made of initiatives taken by circles in Olsztyn, Łódź, and at the Auschwitz-Birke-nau Museum. In 2009 the first in Poland Oral History Society was founded (Towarzystwo Historii Mówionej). This was possible thanks to institutions that are growing and becoming more and more active, and also because of academics who take interest in this kind of research. Every year the Society organizes nationwide conferences. Also other academic centers and societies organize conferences and meetings devoted to the culture of memory and oral history.

Oral history accounts area natural object of research for anthropologists, sociologists, researchers of cultural studies, ethnologists, as well as psychologists engaged in memory studies. As narratives of experience they became the antipositivist rebellion against the monopoly of major historical narratives that, according to the reflection of the second half of the 20th century, were supposed to lead to the catastrophes of war and genocide.  In historiographic research the questioned positivist discourse based on the corresponding theory of the truth has become counterbalanced by the discourse of memory. As a consequence, also in historical research there is noticeable appreciation for other, non-classic, forms of historical narratives which include oral history accounts.  What can a researcher of literary fiction contribute to reflections on oral history whose greatest value should be authenticity, this “truth of experience”? To what extent can literary texts in the convention of a narrative of appeal, first-person narrative, monologue (in which crucial roles are played by dialogue, orality and rhetoric of the text) be read in the perspective of oral history?  When analyzing I Served the King of England novel by Bohumil Hrabal – author who by default rejects ‘the macrocosm’, the world of great politics, historical necessities, social processes, for the world of microcosm, i.e. a life of each person and what is more, he rejects any need for psychological or sociological (or any other) analysis of this microcosm – one can notice that the dichotomy of literary fiction and the authentic experience of oral history is not that obvious as it may seem. Categories of text, narration and memory, although analyzed from different research perspectives, are common for both forms.

Despite the fact that there are more and more contemporary academic publications on the subject of oral history understood as an element of research technique, as a separate research technique or as a specific theoretical and methodological approach, rarely do we see thorough analyses of educational potential of oral history projects realized by various institutions all over Poland. In the available publications and websites one can find information and instruction material that can serve as a starting point for the delivery of documentation projects, however, there are still few educational proposals that go beyond recording, editing and archiving of accounts. Although possibilities of using oral history in broadly understood educational field are noticed, few researches try to include this subject into broader context of contemporary pedagogical theories, concepts developed on the basis of cultural animation or discussions concerning activities for commemorating the past.  In the presented article matters relating to education and pedagogical potential of social projects using oral history technique, are analyzed in three overlapping areas, including: shaping of competences at an individual level (by people taking part in an oral history project), creation – at an institutional level – of the educational offer targeted at local communities as well as artistic projects realized by individuals and institutions with the use of oral history narrations. In the next part of the article those questions are analyzed in the context of experience with self-government cultural institution – ‘Grodzka Gate – NN Theatre’ Centre in Lublin realizing a documentation and animation project ‘Oral History of the City’, which was delivered with the perspective of broadly understood community education and it was targeted at supporting processes of reading and (re-)interpreting multicultural past of the city.

In his account, Eugeniusz Szumiejko (born on Sept 9, 1946 in Wierobiejki), anti-communist opposition activist, recounts his childhood spent on the territories that were joined to the Soviet Union after the Second World War, resettlements and his later opposition activities.  In the 1980’s Szumiejko, as an important member of both legal and clandestine ‘Solidarity’, often found himself in the center of political events taking place in Poland. Therefore, it is worth paying attention to fragments of his account related to the period of so-called ‘Solidarity carnival’ as well as to descriptions of functioning of democratic underground in the years of the martial law and later (including the National Resistance Committee, the Temporary Coordinating Committee as well as the Regional Strike Committee of Lower Silesia).

This text has come to life from the belief that there is a need of reflection on the issue of translation of oral history accounts as a part of researcher’s technique. In spite of the importance of the quality of narrative sources translations, this subject is often disregarded by researchers dealing with oral history not only in Poland but also abroad. So far only the British oral history researchers have been interested in this subject. Therefore in my own observations I focused on the questions of genre classification of oral history narrations, existence of cultural community between the interviewee and the researcher, including the question of whether the researcher knows the language of the researched group or people, I also considered social and cultural background in translations of biographic narrations. I find these matters crucial for proper understanding and translation of biographic narrations content to the reader’s language. Issues raised by me are illustrated with examples of translations prepared for my recent research on national and religious repression in memory of the Poles in Kazakhstan. This choice was motivated by the intention to present my methodological remarks on the most challenging translation available. Most of the analyzed narrations were recorded in Russian, Ukrainian, Polish as well as their numerous dialect variations.  Drawing researchers’ attention to language perspective of recorded and analyzed narrations makes one conscious that each time a narration is presented in an academic text, it has already been altered in many ways by the researcher. Therefore I present various methodological proposals, share my observations and indicate that it is necessary to continuously improve one’s research technique when translating and analyzing foreign oral sources. 
This text has come to life from the belief that there is a need of reflection on the issue of translation of oral history accounts as a part of researcher’s technique. In spite of the importance of the quality of narrative sources translations, this subject is often disregarded by researchers dealing with oral history not only in Poland but also abroad. So far only the British oral history researchers have been interested in this subject. Therefore in my own observations I focused on the questions of genre classification of oral history narrations, existence of cultural community between the interviewee and the researcher, including the question of whether the researcher knows the language of the researched group or people, I also considered social and cultural background in translations of biographic narrations. One of the main objections against oral history interviews is their retrospective character – the distance from the time of events which are covered by the interviews. While it is not the distance itself that is the issue but its deforming potential: the susceptibility of memory to later, in relation to the discussed events, influences. Another issue is the influence of an interview situation itself, relation between the person documenting interview / the researcher and the so-called witness to history.  The text starts with those theoretical and methodological questions and considers them on the example of concrete, empirical material. The material is the so-called representations of former Auschwitz prisoners gathered through decades by the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum as well as biographic and narrative interviews with the same people recorded in years 2002–2003 for the Mauthausen Survivors Documentation Project and archived in the Oral History Archive of the Karta Center and the History Meeting House.  Thorough comparison of both accounts from the same person delivered orally at a different time, place and in a different context (biographic, social, historical) conducted by different institutions and on the basis of different methodologies allows one to analyze the influence of different contexts on the content of the stories told. The effect of those analyses is a new picture of dependencies between the memory of experience of there and then and the entanglement of stories of this experience with the here and now reality. This picture seems quite distant both from naive realism as well as – although today it may seem quite surprising – from extreme constructivism. Analyzed accounts prove to be quite stable and resistant to the lapse of time as well as the current context of an interview situation. In this last regard, on the basis of analyzed sources, one can formulate some methodological postulates related to its impact.

So-called partisans. Monika Stec in an interview with Krystyna Badurka Referring to the story of her father’s death in 1945, Krystyna Badurka-Rytel discusses the times before and after World War II. Before WWII, her father, Felix Badurka, was a soldier of the Home Army, while after the war he served as the chairman of the National Council and built "the new system". For decades, the Badurka family has been trying to find out who is responsible for his murder.The story of tracking perpetrators is presented against a broader background: the attitude of the population and the Church towards the underground army during and after WWII; the socio-political changes (specifically in rural areas) after World War II, as well as the modern times, in particular the attitude to the past. Krystyna Badurka-Rytel objects to the current Polish political history, because, as she believes, it glorifies the war crimes committed by the so-called “conspiracy” by honouring the participants with books and monuments.

Wangel Durlow is one of 7.5 thousand Aegean Macedonians that came to Poland as a result of the Greek civil war. In his narration he mostly recounts events related to the war and mandatory resettlement from his hometown in Northern Greece seen from the child’s perspective – Mr. Durlow was 12 when he left Greece. His account provides us with information on daily life and customs of the Macedonians living in Greece, difficult beginning of his stay in Poland resulting from cultural and civilization differences between Poland and Greece as well as education and upbringing of Greek children in Poland.  Despite pleas of his parents, who settled in Yugoslavia after the Greek civil war, he has not decided to leave Poland where he graduated from school and married a Polish woman.  There is a long description of the first meeting with his parents which took place only after 16 years of separation. The account of travels to Yugoslavia again emphasizes cultural differences between Poland Macedonia, especially the relation of the wife of Mr. Durlow with his parents.  In spite of the fact that the story of Wangel Durlow touches upon difficult and sometimes traumatic matters, he is recounting it with a sense of humor and has perspective towards it; he is emphasizing the influence of kind-hearted people – Polish teachers, his parents-in-law, who many times helped him to handle unfamiliar Polish reality.

The author presents the outcomes of oral history  research relating to the history of the Czechoslovak Maritime Shipping Company from 1959–1989 in the form of a case study. The interpretation of the accounts of seventeen former Czechoslovakian sailors focuses on two aspects: their professional and family lives. The author recognises that these two aspects of the sailors’ lives were very often in conflict with each other, concluding that their work was often much more significant than their family life; that although they realised the problems that their families faced, they were unable to help by giving the work up to be with their families.  The text is supplemented with a methodological reflection that focuses on the issue of a researcher’s emotional engagement to the research subject. Finally, the author presents thoughts on parallel and potential comparative studies between the lives of the Czechoslovakian sailors (from a country without direct sea access) and Poland (a country with a very rich maritime tradition).
