Opis:: The article deals with the question of the existence of the Jewish community and the barriers between Jews and non-Jews in the Old Warsaw from the 1420s to the 1520s. The contact points and areas of the two communities, as well as the tools used to communicate between them, are distinguished. Firstly, Jewish property in the space of Old Warsaw, as well as neighbouring and economic contacts, are noticed. Then, the presence of Jews both from Warsaw and other towns and regions in court sessions is analysed. Local and Lithuanian or Volhynian Jews appeared in the Old Warsaw town hall. However, the most important place for official meetings of Warsaw Jews with the Christian community was the court for nobles. It is visible that the first half of the fifteenth century was a unique period with a far-reaching agreement between the Christian inhabitants of Warsaw and its surroundings and the members of the local Jewish community. Within the linguistic area, the communication tools were Polish and German, while Latin, possibly familiar to some Jews, was not a significant communication barrier. Hebrew had its position in the bureaucratic system as well. The protection of the local duke secured a relatively harmonious economic cooperation, which was fostered by the then economic situation of Mazovia. The mid-fifteenth century brought a violent turn, which was influenced by the changes in the political and economic situation, as well as the religious atmosphere. Warsaw burghers started to perceive the Jews as competition, as ‘others’, and began to approach them with growing hostility.

Opis:: In 2016, inventory book of Old Warsaw furriers guild from 1666–1932 was added to the fonds of Central Archive of Historical Records (AGAD). It was purchased from the existing Guild of furriers, glovers and tanners. Its value is increased by the fact, that beyond scarce royal documents and city council documents issued for, or in connection with, the furriers guild, AGAD does not have any other records of that guild. The book is a manuscript, bound in brown, somewhat distressed leather, with embossed title “Inventory of guild laws [...] Anno 1667”. It contains a list of documents and records preserved by furriers guild since 17th century until 1930s. In 1917, the archive of furriers guild contained, besides a number of royal privileges, 14 books and numerous loose leaf documents. During World War II, the archive was hidden in the Artisanship Improvement Institute at 50 Chmielna Street in Warsaw. The building was bombed during the Warsaw Uprising and burned down. It can be surmised, that the guild book was saved by accident, most likely, at the time it was in possession of one of the members of the guild.
W 2016 r. zasób Archiwum Głównego Akt Dawnych w Warszawie wzbogacił się o księgę inwentarzową cechu kuśnierzy Starej Warszawy z lat 1666–1932. Zakupiono ją od działającego do dziś warszawskiego Cechu kuśnierzy, kożuszkarzy, rękawiczników i garbarzy. Jej wartość podnosi fakt, że AGAD poza nielicznymi dokumentami królewskimi i dokumentami rady miasta wystawianymi na rzecz cechu kuśnierzy lub w jego sprawach, nie posiada innej dokumentacji tego cechu. Zakupiona księga to rękopis oprawny w brązową, obecnie nieco przetartą skórę, z wyciśniętym tytułem: „Inwentarz praw cechowych y inszych rzeczy za starszych pana Mat[yasa] Surm[ikiewicza] pana Paw[ła] Szik[orskiego] gminnych pana Marti[na] Chudzin[skiego] Ann[o] 1667”. Zawiera ona spis dokumentów i akt przechowywanych przez cech kuśnierzy od XVII do lat 30. XX w. W 1917 r. w archiwum cechu kuśnierzy znajdowało się, poza kilkunastoma przywilejami królewskimi, 14 ksiąg oraz liczne dokumenty luźne. W czasie II wojny światowej archiwum to ukryto w Instytucie Doskonalenia Rzemiosła przy ul. Chmielnej 50 w Warszawie. Dom ten został zbombardowany podczas powstania warszawskiego i spłonął. Można przypuszczać, że księga cechowa ocalała przez przypadek, najprawdopodobniej była wówczas w rękach jednego z członków cechu.

Opis:: Cel: Celem artykułu jest analiza aktualnego poziomu bezpieczeństwa pożarowego oraz przygotowania operacyjnego do prowadzenia działań ratowniczo-gaśniczych na terenie historycznego centrum Warszawy. Dodatkowo w pracy określono rozwiązania techniczne, operacyjne i legislacyjne, które mogą przyczynić się do poprawy sytuacji w dwóch wyżej wymienionych obszarach. Wprowadzenie: W artykule przedstawiono ocenę bezpieczeństwa pożarowego oraz przygotowania operacyjnego do działań ratowniczo-gaśniczych terenu Starego Miasta w Warszawie. W tym celu wykorzystano analizę dostępnych materiałów źródłowych, danych statystycznych, wyników badań ankietowych oraz obowiązujących aktów prawnych. Elementem wprowadzenia do przedmiotowego zagadnienia jest również charakterystyka dzielnicy Stare Miasto w Warszawie, w której uwzględniono przynależność tego obszaru do światowego dziedzictwa narodowego UNESCO. Metodologia: Artykuł zawiera ocenę wybranych aspektów bezpieczeństwa pożarowego Starego Miasta w Warszawie oraz przygotowania operacyjnego KM PSP w Warszawie tego obszaru. Ocena bezpieczeństwa pożarowego została przeprowadzona przy wykorzystaniu analizy materiałów zgromadzonych podczas pracy przy programie HERITPROT, danych uzyskanych od Komendy Miejskiej PSP w Warszawie oraz na podstawie wyników badań ankietowych. Badania ankietowe przeprowadzono wśród wszystkich obecnych na Starym Mieście administratorów nieruchomości mieszkalnych oraz wszystkich występujących na tym terenie administratorów budynków sakralnych. Analiza przygotowania operacyjnego do prowadzenia działań ratowniczo-gaśniczych objęła weryfikację zgodności z wymaganiami dróg pożarowych oraz przeciwpożarowego zaopatrzenia w wodę. Na podstawie przeprowadzonej analizy zaproponowano metody zwiększenia bezpieczeństwa miejskich starówek. Do proponowanych działań organizacyjnych należą szkolenia jednostek ratowniczo-gaśniczych. Rozwiązania techniczne to nowoczesne urządzenia gaśnicze (mgła wodna), natomiast działania legislacyjne obejmują dostosowanie zasad opracowywania instrukcji bezpieczeństwa pożarowego dla budynków zabytkowych. Wnioski: Wykazano, że problemy związane z odpowiednim zabezpieczeniem wrażliwego, historycznego obszaru miejskiego oraz zabytkowych eksponatów można rozwiązywać z wykorzystaniem urządzeń technicznych lub uwarunkowań prawnych. Artykuł zawiera przykłady działań pozwalających poprawiać stan bezpieczeństwa pożarowego na starówkach miejskich oraz przykłady rozwiązań służących polepszeniu przygotowania tych obszarów do prowadzenia akcji ratowniczo-gaśniczej. Dodatkowo kompleksowa ocena stanu dróg pożarowych i przeciwpożarowego zaopatrzenia w wodę może być bezpośrednio wykorzystana do działań operacyjnych Komendy Miejskiej PSP w Warszawie.
Aim: This article aims to analyse the current level of fire safety and operating preparation for conducting rescue and firefighting operations within the Historical Centre of Warsaw. The aim of the study is also to determine the technical, operating and legislative activities which can improve the situation in the two aforementioned areas. Introduction: The article presents an assessment of fire safety and the preparation for fire and rescue operations in the Old Town in Warsaw. For this purpose, the paper analyses the available source materials, statistical data, survey results and existing legislation. As an introduction to the subject, the article describes the Old Town district of Warsaw, including its recognition as a world heritage site by the UNESCO. Methodology: The article contains an assessment of selected aspects of fire safety in Warsaw’s Old Town and an evaluation of the preparation of the Municipal Headquarters of the State Fire Service in Warsaw for carrying out operations in this area. The assessment of fire safety was performed using the analysis of materials collected while working with the HERITPROT project, data obtained from the Municipal Headquarters of the State Fire Service in Warsaw and on the basis of survey results. A survey was also carried out among all residential property administrators in the Old Town and all administrators of religious buildings in this area. The analysis of the preparation for rescue and firefighting operations included an assessment of compliance with the requirements of fire access roads and fire water supply. The analysis proposes ways of increasing the safety of Old Town areas in cities. Organisational activities include training for fire and rescue units; technical solutions comprise modern firefighting equipment (water fog); and legislative action involves the adaptation of Fire Safety Instructions for historic buildings. Conclusions: The analysis showed that problems with an inadequate protection of sensitive historic urban fabric and historical exhibits can be solved by using either technical devices or legal conditions. Hence, the article includes examples of activities for improving fire safety in Old Town areas, and examples of solutions for improving the preparation of these areas for conducting rescue and firefighting operations. In addition, the contained comprehensive assessment of fire access roads and fire water supply can be directly used for operating activities of the Municipal Headquarters of the State Fire Service in Warsaw.

Opis:: The subject of this article is a big city social Policy towards old people with an example of Warsaw. The author was inspired to write this text with her partici- pation in a workgroup “Exclusion of elderly persons,” which prepared a diagnosis and formulated initial suggestions to the Social Strategy for Warsaw 2009–2020. It seems, that regardless the differences between big towns, basic goals and assumptions for the policy towards senior citizens are similar in the majority of metropolitan communities. Due to the fact that any proposal concerning social policy should be preceded by a diag- nosis, the article begins with the description of demographic situation of big Polish towns (above half million population) and with a diagnosis of the situation of senior citi- zens in Warsaw. Demographic and socio-economic data were obtained from the Central Statistical Office publications.

Opis:: The article discusses the problem of cartographic presentation of immaterial elements of city space. On the example of old city maps of Warsaw from the period between 1641 and the end of the 19th century, the image of objects and places in Warsaw is linked to the image of activities happening in them, or in connection with them. The author presents results of the analysis of the methods of presentation of immaterial elements, distinguishing three most numerous groups of them: nomenclature, functions and significance of objects, and property and administrative issues. The conclusions base on the analysis of 61 general city maps of Warsaw covering the whole city, elaborated in the periods 1641-1800, 1801-1900, and, supplementary, 1901-1939.

Zaprezentowano najwartościowsze kartografika znajdujące się w zbiorach, zwłaszcza najstarsze i najcenniejsze rękopiśmienne mapy wielkoskaiowe, zarówno gruntowe, miejskie jak i forteczne z XVII, XVIII i XIX wieku.
Cartographic collection of the Main Archives of Old Records (AGAD) in Warsaw consists of atlases, urban maps, architectural and technical drawings and graphic art kept in the Department of Cartography and in departments which collect the documents of authorities, offices and institutions of the Republic as well as family records. The collection kept in the Department of Cartography is divided into seventeen groups, sets and collections which are concisely described in the article. The Archives' cartographic collection is dated between 1579 and 1974. Among its maps and architectural drawings are multicolored hand drawn documents, mainly large scale land property maps and urban plans from 18th and 19th centuries. The oldest map in the collection, presenting East Phrysia is a copperplate engraving from 1579. The oldest hand drawn document is the plan of the manor and garden in Ujazdów near Warsaw from 1606, authored by Alessandro Albertini. Cartographic items from the time of the Commonwealth of Both the Nations collected in the archive concern mainly the territories of the Crown rather than the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Those from the period after the partitioning (1794) cover mainly the terrains taken over by Prussia as a result of the 2nd and 3rd partitioning, and later the territories of the Duchy of Warsaw and the Kingdom of Poland in the borders established in 1815 by the Vienna Congress. Atlases constitute the least numerous group.

Opis:: W ostatnich latach kamienice Starego i Nowego Miasta w Warszawie poddawane są remontom. Czy prace te mieszczą się w pojęciu konserwacja-restauracja, czy są renowacją? Wątpliwości budzi przede wszystkim efekt estetyczny – nadanie elewacjom efektu nowości. Konieczność zachowania autentycznego wyrazu artystycznego dekoracji kamienic Starego i Nowego Miasta wynika z faktu, że są to dzieła wybitnych polskich artystów. Poza tym Stare Miasto jest wpisane na Listę światowego dziedzictwa UNESCO. W artykule skupiono się na problemie rozwiązań estetycznych i artystycznych, które są jednak ściśle powiązane z zabiegami technicznymi. Skomentowano przykłady konserwacji tynków, dekoracji malarskich oraz sgraffit wykonanych w ciągu ostatnich sześciu lat. Krytycznej ocenie poddano decyzje dotyczące estetycznych rozwiązań. Omówiono też niektóre zabiegi techniczne np. kładzenie na elewację barwionych w masie tynków. Celem analizy jest zaproponowanie rozwiązań, które pozwolą na zachowanie wartości dawności i autentyzmu wystrojów kamienic Starego i Nowego Miasta.
In recent years, the tenement houses of the Old and New Town in central Warsaw have been undergoing renovation. Does this work fall within the concept of conservation-restoration, or merely renovation? The aesthetic effect is questioned-giving the facades a fresh new appearance. The need to maintain the authentic artistic expression of the decorations of the Old and New Towns is necessary as they are works of outstanding Polish artists. In addition, the Old Town is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. This paper focuses on the aesthetic and artistic solutions that are closely related to technical measures. Examples of the conservation of plasters, painting decorations and sgraffito that has been undertaken in the last six years are commented on. Decisions regarding aesthetic solutions are critically assessed. Some technical procedures were also discussed, e.g., the application of colored plaster on the facade. The aim of the analysis is to propose solutions that will allow the preservation of the age-values and the authenticity of the exterior decorations of the Old and New Town houses.
