The paper touches upon the phenomenon of interchanging consonants c and č in the text of the full lectionary from the Russian State Archive of Ancient Acts in Moscow. The research aims at establishing orthographical rules which were followed by the writers of the book, as well as at defining the number and categories of mistakes which were made by the writers while breaking the aforementioned rules. The research findings amount to a linguistic confirmation of the northern origins of the Gospel Book Tip-7. Moreover, the results are the basis for assessing the level of the writers’ professionalism and for comparing this old text with other manuscripts created in similar locations and times.

This article is devoted to a special kind of errors made by the scribes of the Old Russian Books of the Gospels. These are erroneous wordings which create the impression of being correct, since they constitute existing words, in wording and form, similar to the original ones, but which nevertheless alter the meaning of the text. The article presents mechanisms of occurrence of such errors and also shows that modification of meaning caused by erroneous writing could have different degree. The contribution of the writer’s consciousness to the development of error was taken into account in the research. An attempt was made to use the results of the analysis of errors of a given type to formulate conclusions regarding the way the scribe works and his degree of professionalism.

Opis:
The article analyses 2nd person singular perfect forms in a collection of Old Russian documents of the 14–16th centuries. The main focus is placed on their formal aspects and the transition from an analytic to synthetic form. The process itself is well-known, yet it still lacks a detailed description and fully explained reasons for its occurrence. The author, providing statistical data on the use of the auxiliary verb byti and explicitly expressed subject, proves its great regularity. There is a strong dependence between the two items and usually only one of them is applied with perfect constructions. This shows that the function of the auxiliary verb has been completely changed and in the period described it played only the role of a person indicator. Thus, it became redundant when the use of personal pronouns was increased. All the exceptions to this rule are scarce and can be explained with factors of a syntactical or extra-linguistic character. The author’s assumptions are confirmed with statistical data and examples taken from spiritual and contractual charters of grand princes and appanage princes in the XIV–XVI centuries.

The formulas take both the stylistic function, marking certain parts of the text, and the semantic function, esta-blishing a semantic link between chronicle and precedent texts.

This is caused by the fact that the community consists of elderly people and no publications have been issued. Old Believers’ publishing houses publish reprints of traditional primers which appeared at the beginning of the 20th century. Rescue archaeology in Russia is full of contradictions. The apologetic approach to archaeology focuses solely on vast areas covered by excavations, discoveries and investments of millions. But the reality is more complex than that. This article addresses the transformations that took place in rescue archaeology in the 1980s, during “Perestroika”, and in particular in Moscow. Not everyone can withstand the temptation of money. Commercial interests have supplanted the Science in many cases, including that of Moscow. In the meantime, in many Old Russian cities (Pskov, Tver, Vladimir, etc.), the works were conducted in an exemplary manner, thanks to pre-existing traditions of research. Authorities’ demands to free land from the burden of archaeological heritage have led to shifting the focus of archaeological exploration now, identifying the boundaries of archaeological monuments became the key objective, a task that remains basically impossible, as said boundaries are of a purely formal nature. Excavations of empty spaces within archaeological sites have become typical for rescue archaeology and form modern “informational noise”. At the same time, archaeological research carried out on an unprecedented scale, even including the “empty” trenches, provide unique data on spatial and temporal structure of human activity, as exemplified by exploration of the Angara river banks during the construction of the Boguchany Dam.

Opis:
Autor rozważa w artykule niecodzienny typ wariantywności w języku staroruskim: singularis vs pluralis. Jego uwagę zwracają przede wszystkim takie sytuacje we współczesnym języku rosyjskim, gdy zamiast dawnej wariantywności form liczby występują formy singularia tantum i pluralia tantum. Zdaniem autora przypadki wariantywności form w zakresie liczby można wyjaśnić podwójną naturą znaków językowych – sygnifikatywnych i denotatywnych.
The article considers an unusual type of variability in the Old Russian – singularis vs pluralis. Attention is drawn first of all to cases where in the modern Russian language, instead of the ancient variability of numerical forms, the words singularia tantum and pluralia tantum are found. We believe that cases of numerical variability have an explanation in the dual nature of verbal signs – significative and denotative. The grammatical form of the singular appears as an expression of significatum and does not correlate with the potential grammatical meaning of singularity. On the contrary, the replacement of the original word forms of the singular by the plural is due precisely to the semantic saturation of the plural forms reflecting the complexity of the objects or the substantial intensity. The marked member of the opposition – pluralis – signals the reality, concreteness, the beingness of the designated objects, while the unmarked term results in the idea (signification, concept) of the designated objects. In tense interaction of opposition members, a secondary, reflected categoriality develops, as a result of which the private opposition can function as an equipollent one.

The article is an analysis of the information on anxiety in Poland in the 11th century, as noted down in Russian sources, that in the 12th century chronicle the Tale o f Bygone Years, the Life of Moisej the Hungarian at the Paterik o f Kievan Caves Monastery, a collection of stories from the lives of monks of the Kievan Caves Monstery, whose original version was created in the 13th century. Probably this piece of information was also included in the Life of Antonij Pecerskij, created in the 11th century, however it has not been preserved to our times. It is probable that the common source for the aforementioned items was a tale about the Russian princess Predslava who was kidnapped to Poland in 1018. Those sources claim that the anxiety in Poland arose just after Boleslav I the Brave died, which is mentioned in the Tale o f Bygone Years under 1030. However, the Polish science claims that so called pagan revolution related to social affairs took place at the moment of collapse of the state of Poland. This event dates back to 1036-1037 or 1037-1038. Having analysed the records of the old Russian chronicle and the stories from the lives of monks of the Kievan Caves Monastery it results that transfer of some information from one source to another was very smooth, thus it is sometimes impossible to investigate the origin source.

The article analyzes the interrelations between the texts of the Novgorodian‑Sophian group of the first half of the 15th century (Novgorod Karamzin, First Sophian and Forth Novgorod chronicles) on a specific section of the annalistic material. We explore the “links” to some Kievan text in the entries of the late 11th century from the First Sophian Chronicle, their context and probable sources. The compiler of this chronicle has left traces of his activity on early Rus’ history in his drafts (such remarks as “to search in Kievan” and similar) which scholars have considered as evidence of some importance to define the stages of annalistic work of the 15th century in Novgorod and Moscow. It is argued that a set of “links” of the First Sophian was used by the author of the second part of the Novgorod Karamzin Chronicle to fill the gaps in his narrative. However, detailed textual analysis demonstrates the very complicated and clearly later composition in the First Sophian. Therefore both the first and second parts of Novgorod Karamzin Chronicle precede the First Sophian. The paper also pays attention to some aspects of the relations between the Novgorodian‑Sophian group and early Kievan and Novgorod chronicles.

The article describes the specificity of the changes that took place in the process of dissemination of double negation, typical for Slavic languages, visible in the Ruthenian recension of Church Slavonic texts. The reflections on the achievements in the field are enriched with the results of research on the text of Gospel No. 7 from the collection of the Russian State Archive of Ancient Acts (RGADA F. 381. Op. 1 Unit hr 7), which has not been analyzed so far in terms of the issues raised. Nearly three hundred negative structures were subjected to observations. In order to determine the number of single negation cases in relation to double negation the main focus was on structures such as: (1) ni Pron + V, (2) ni Pron + ne V oraz (3) ne V + ni Pron. It was determined, among other things, that their use was influenced by both the literature tradition and live language with elements of the northern dialect of the East Slavonic. On the other hand, the analysis of the negative structures preceding homogeneous parts of the sentence revealed the tendency, manifested onthe leaves of the monument, to transform towards the norm of the contemporary Russian language.

The idea of Sophia – the personified Wisdom of God served as a symbol of independence and identity of the republic in the political culture of Novgorod the Great. In Old Russian chronicles and other narrative sources which can be connected with Novgorod, one may find statements showing that – in the eyes of the Novgorodians themselves – Wisdom was not only one of the main attributes of God, but also a separate character, a kind of divine being, who could be interpreted as patronesses and supernatural protector of the city-state. Construction of the temple of Hagia Sophia in Novgorod is usually dated to 1045–1050. In the source material one can find information that Novgorodian Sophia church was undoubtedly the most significant and important monument in the city. The theme of Wisdom of God is also a very prominent topic in Novgorodian historiography and literature. Moreover, the feminine personification of God’s Wisdom can also be found on the coins, emitted by the city-state from 1420.

Opis:
The Word of Wisdom is a relatively small-sized relic of medieval eastern Slavic literature from what is certainly the oldest period of its existence, i.e. from before the Mongol invasion of Rus. It is attributed usually to Cyril of Turov (who died before 1182), one of the greatest writers of the Old Russian period. The oldest manuscript containing the full text of the Word of Wisdom is the parchment code from the thirteenth century, which is currently stored in the collections of the National Library of Russia in Saint Petersburg. A small fragment of the Word of Wisdom was also written on a birch bark document, found in its entirety in Torzhok near Novgorod the Great. This relic is usually dated to the years 1170-1190.

Opis:
The Old-Russian account about the siege of Constantinople by participants of the Fourth Crusade in 1204 has survived in several East Slavic historiographical texts and represents primarily an independent literary work. Certainly, the earliest of these texts is the Novgorod First Chronicle. It is an older edition preserved only in one copy – the so-called “Synodal manuscript”, which was written in the middle of the thirteenth century. At that time the story was written. Its author could have taken information about the events he described directly from eyewitnesses. His account of events is characterized by objectivity and credibility and constitutes a valuable resource for the study of the Fourth Crusade

Opis:
The work of Pseudo-Methodius, whose creation (in the original Syrian version) dates back to ca. 690, enjoyed considerable popularity in Medieval Slavic literatures. It was translated into Church Slavic thrice. In all likelihood, these translations arose independently of each other in Bulgaria, based on the Greek translation, the so-called ‘first Byzantine redaction’ (from the beginning of the 8th century). From Bulgaria, the Slavic version of the Apocalypse of Pseudo-Methodius spread to other Slavic lands – Serbia and Rus’. In the latter, the work of Pseudo-Methodius must have been known already at the beginning of the 12th century, given that quotations from it appear in the Russian Primary Chronicle (from the second decade of the 12th century). In the 15th century, an original, expanded with inserts taken from other works, Slavic version also came into being, known as the ‘interpolated redaction’. All of the Slavic translations display clear marks of the events that preceded them and the circumstances of the period in which they arose. Above all, the Saracens – present in the original version of the prophecy – were replaced by other nations: in the Novgorod First Chronicle we find the Mongols/Tatars (who conquered Rus’ in the first half of the 13th century).

Opis:
The subject matter of this article is the characterization of adjective declension system in one of Western-Ruthenian literary monuments. "The Suprasl Chronicle", which is classified by researchers as the first Belorussian-Lithuanian compilation, is in terms of language an unusually rich and varied monument. The analysis of adjective declension conducted in this article indicates that full forms are more numerous than simple ones which are used in "The Suprasl Chronicle" in the function of predicative. In the inflection of full forms some influence of the Old Church Slavonic and Belorussian languages has been observed. In the plural form of simple adjectives there is a noticeable tendency to level endings after feminine inflection paradigm.

Opis:
The article is devoted to the 13th century Gospel Book, which is kept in the Russian State Archive of Old Records and registered under reference F. 381, № 7. The aim of the paper is to define the similarity of the manuscript to other old texts according to its content and order of readings. Moreover, the author attempts to find the Gospel Book’s place in the classification of full lectionaries. In the course of the analysis it is stated that the text has various typological features. Despite the fact that in some elements it resembles the South Slavonic Miroslav Gospel, it belongs to the most common type of full lectionaries in Ruthenia among which the leading role is played by Mstislav Gospel. Furthermore, the manuscript reflects the peculiar features of Milata Gospel, which makes it a part of the class of manuscripts represented by this old text of Novgorod.

Opis:
The sequence concerning the reign of Peter and Maria Lekapene as well as the Byzantine-Bulgarian relations between 927 and 969 can be found in the second version of the Hellenic and Roman Chronicle. It is a vast historiographical work, whose authors attempted to demonstrate the history of medieval Rus against the broad background of universal history, drawing on the sources of Byzantine provenance known in Slavonic translation (mainly the chronicles of John Malalas and George Hamartolus). Given the fact that the Hellenic and Roman Chronicle does not contain information about the capture of Constantinople by the Ottoman Turks, the year 1453 is considered the terminus ante quem for the second version of the said chronicle, which is of interest to us here. Its oldest preserved copies come from the mid-fifteenth century. The passages about Maria and Peter are extensive. They include about six columns of text written in semi-uncial in the most representative copy of the second version of the Hellenic and Roman Chronicle, i.e. manuscript БАН, 33.8.13, which is dated to the last quarter of the fifteenth century. Reading them allows one to ascertain that they constitute only a reworded version of the Slavic translation of the relevant passages of the B-version of the Georgius Monachus Continuatus. The content of the Byzantine source is quoted here in full without any abbreviations or author’s additions. The differences between the text of БАН, 33.8.13 and the text of РГБ, собр. Ундольского [Ф. 310], № 1289 – constituting the basis for editing the translation of the Georgius Monachus Continuatus of the B-version – are limited only to the stylistic and editorial level, except for the changes resulting most probably from the copyist misunderstanding the meaning of the original.
