Polish construction vocabulary
Dictionary of Old Polish
Old Polish language
borrowings
Opis:
The oldest construction vocabulary in the Polish language (outline of the issue) The article presents an outline of the research problems of construction vocabulary contained in the Old Polish Dictionary, collecting words until the year 1500. Preliminary analyzes have shown that the oldest layer of vocabulary in this field relates to wooden construction, widespread in Poland from the earliest times. The text presents a proposed classification of the material and discusses several thematic groups: names of buildings, tools, materials, construction activities. Then, the prospects for further research were outlined: the need for a complete thematic classification of the construction vocabulary used in the Old Polish era was indicated, as well as to determine its origin, including words related to building common to all Slavic languages and dialectal names used only in certain Slavic areas, and for both groups to determine which words were taken from the Proto-Slavic or even Proto-Indo-European era, and which and when were borrowed from foreign languages. The next stage of research would include words newly created in Polish from native forms and words borrowed into Polish in the Middle Ages. On the basis of the collected material, it was initially indicated that Old Polish borrowings in construction vocabulary come less frequently from Czech and Latin, and the greatest number from German.

Opis:
The transformation of a meaning of prostotaThis article is dedicated to the evolution of one of prostota lexeme meaning (and prostoć, prostość as well) – its human mental sphere significance. The analysis (definitions and examples) expands over the Polish language dictionary since its beginning till modernity. There were two main meanings of a lexeme prostota from the Old Polish till the end of the XVII century – positively characterised straight meaning regarding morality, directly linked to religious attitude and the second one, referring to mental and intelectual ability of individual, negatively regarding its undernormative features. It transformed during the XVIII century – the disredarding meaning disappeared, the first, religious aspect expanded over morality, customs, the way of living, simultanously drifting away from its religious significance.Throught the history of the prostota lexeme there was a short period regarding to a lack of culture and misbehaviour but dissapeared quickly with uprising of a prostactwo lexeme. Since the XIX century the dominating feature of prostota lexeme is being natural in a positive way. Besides the modifications of the lexeme and the transformation of its meanings prostota was mostly referring to positive values, which are the only meanings now.

The Polish version of the article was published in “Roczniki Humanistyczne,” vol. 59 (2011), issue 1. The article is the editor-in-chief’s comment to the discussion between Agnieszka Czechowicz and Paweł Bohuszewicz as presented in the current issue of the journal. The author defends philological methods in studying early modern literary texts and expresses her scepticism concerning any methods questioning and negating the fundamental epistemological difference between what is being studied and a researcher himself.

Opis:
The article is an overview of studies on the theme of childhood and the child as a specific literary hero of old Polish hagiography. Hagiographers tended to render the childhood of the saints within a schematic framework employing an abundant repertoire of rhetoric devices. But hagiography also gives fragmentary descriptions of customs connected with the relations between parents and children as well as with parental care and the bringing up progeny. For hagiographers childhood was above all a foretoken of the saint’s future virtues and works. The child itself, however, was not a suitable paragon to follow so hagiography rarely treated it as a hero in its own right.

The authors of the article deal with a list of biographical entries of people connected with Lviv and Torun from the beginning of the 16th century until 1772 (for Lviv) and 1773 (for Torun) included in the Polish biographic dictionary. The major criterion was not family background, but close ties with the city in question. The list includes people born and educated in Torun and Lviv, who maintained contacts with the cities having moved to another place; the list also embraces people who were born somewhere else, but were associated with the cities or held some important office there. As far as the residents of Torun are concerned, for every 100 there were 90 burghers. Almost 150 biographical entries refer to people connected with Lviv, most of whom were burghers and thirty-six of whom were clergymen of various denominations. The number of women representing both cities is scarce; they are exclusively nuns (only 2% of the biographical entries concern women). Both cities are represented by Murinius, a Dominican priest from Torun whose family town was Lviv. He abandoned the monastic life and became a Lutheran preacher famous for speaking beautiful Polish

The text is a review of the Dariusz Śnieżko’s book Kompleksja literatury. Studia staropolskie (The Complexion of Literature. Old-Polish Studies) (TAiWPN UNIVERSITAS, Krakow 2019). The only serious doubt regards the sound of the title (readers might not know the word “complexion”). Kompleksja literatury is a fascinating book. For whom? – certainly students of Old-Polish literature (and it will be also inspiring for scholars of the next historical and literary epochs). What? – revealing the most important dimensions of Old-Polish literature. Why? – because in works published so far the scant use of source texts proves to be representative of the most general material remaining of Old-Polish literature in its intertwining of anthropology and dialectics of orality and literacy.

The article discusses the usage of the classical topos Graeca fides to describe the citizens of the Grand Duchy of Moscow in early modern Polish literature (chronicles, diaries, journalistic writings, diplomatic reports etc.). This way of speaking was justified by the identification of the Eastern Orthodox Church with the Greek Byzantine Rite. The formula was used to deprecate Russians and became part of a negative stereotype. The author demonstrates, with diverse examples, how this formula became a constant topos in statements about a country considered hostile in Poland since the 16th century, and in which contexts it was developed.

Opis:
In Old Polish texts as well as in later works written in the Old Polish style (e.g. in the Trilogy by H. Sienkiewicz), the name bachmat was used to describe a horse of the Tatar breed, characterized by its small size but incredible endurance. An analogous term (бахматъ) can be found in the literature of Old Rus’. There is no doubt that it is an orientalism, which entered into both the Old Russsian language and – through it or independently – the Polish language and here from one of the Tatar dialects. Among the explanations for its etymology, the most interesting seems one connecting it with the term Бохмитъ, i.e., a variant of Muhammad’s name, characteristic for the literature of Old Rus’. The article aims to determine when the term бахматъ could have entered the literature of Old Rus’, how widespread it was, in what contexts it appeared, and whether it is possible to show a connection between the studied word and the East Slavic form of Muhammad’s name (Бохмитъ).
