Opis:
The linguistic situation in medieval Croatia was fairly dynamic. The present article discusses the stratification of linguistic culture in the Middle Ages as regards its division into the three registers (high, middle, low) inherited from ancient rhetoric and poetry and received in the Middle Ages. We conclude that there was no strict division among the three languages according to function in the Middle Ages, and that the languages themselves did not constitute styles or registers. The Old Croatian language possessed all three registers (high, middle, low) already in the Middle Ages. However, the hybrid Čakavian-Church Slavic variety as well as the Croatian redaction of Church Slavic were not used as everyday (in)formal business/colloquial codes, so that they did not develop a middle and low linguistic register.

Opis:
Archival research is of great importance for the study of old Croatian literature, as a large part of the body of literary texts has been preserved in manuscripts to the present day, and many of them are kept in archives. Although at its beginnings Croatian national philology was strongly focused on archival work, in the 20th century this kind of research was abandoned, despite the fact that there was still a lot of unanalyzed material left in the archives, as well as many possibilities for correction or supplementing previous conclusions. Thus the handwritten Kajkavian songbooks, especially the secular ones, have been only partially examined. In addition, some songbooks from the Croatian State Archives have never become an object of research. This article draws attention to the importance of fundamental archival research, without which it is impossible to properly draw a picture of the Kajkavian element of old Croatian literature.

Je li hrvatski književni modernizam bio antikatolički usmjeren? Jedan idejni vidik polemike između „starih” i „mladih” u hrvatskoj književnosti na prijelazu između 19. i 20. st.

Opis:
An interesting conceptual dispute, usually called a confrontation between “the old” and “the young”, developed at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. Although by its name defined as a “clash of generations”, the dispute was basically rooted in differences between two groups of writers concerning their attitudes toward arts: of traditionalists, whose starting point was the principle of the unity of truth, beauty and good, and of modernists, who relied on aestheticism and concept of l’art pour l’art’. “The young”, while upholding individualism, particularly used to stress their anti-Catholicism. The author checks whether at their root there was anti-Catholicism. He comes to the conclusion that Croatian Moderna was not an organised anti-Christian or anti-Chatolic movement, even though it isn’t doubtful that anticlericalism of “the young”, to a large degree, assumed contours of antagonism towards public expression of Catholicism in culture, harbingering at the same time secularist conceptual processes that were expressed later in the political field and all the other fields of social life.

Opis:
In the 19th century, the great cult that surrounds the saints Ciril and Methodius in Slavic countries went beyond religious worship. Under the influence of Slavophile ideology, the accents of the cult were transferred from the sphere of religion to the national sphere. Saints Cyril and Methodius, as the first apostles in the Slav lands, became symbols of unification and brotherhood of Slav nations. The article discussed historical and social background of the phenomenon and its connection with musical culture, particularly with the works of composers. The text contains a review of works devoted to saints Cyril and Methodius, written by such composers as Pavel Kížkovský, Piotr Czajkowski, Božidar Širola, Leoš Janáek.
