Opis:
In the stratigraphic division of the Saalian (Middle Pleistocene) in Europe, the Wartanian cold period has the rank of a stadial of the Odranian Glaciation, correlated with MIS 6. The authors demonstrate the higher rank of this cold period, on the basis of an analysis of the sedimentary succession in eastern Poland, at an exposure of the terminal moraine of the Wartanian ice sheet. At the Wólka Zagórna site, three stratigraphic units were distinguished: A (lower glacigenic deposits – glaciofluvial deposits and subglacial till), A/B (fossil soil of lessivé type), B and C (a periglacial horizon with deflation pavement, involutions, frost-wedge structures and upper glaciofluvial deposits and flow till, with ice-wedge casts). Two distinct periods of climatic cooling, associated with the youngest Saalian ice sheets, were recorded in this succession in E Poland: Odranian (unit A, an ice-sheet transgression marked by the deposition of glaciofluvial deposits dated as 365–226 ka, ending with the deposition of subglacial till), and Wartanian (units B and C, an ice sheet transgression marked by development of a periglacial zone, dated as 180–126 ka, and then deposition of glacigenic sediments at the front of the ice sheet and formation of a marginal moraine). Each of these periods of ice-sheet transgression occurred at a different time (in the MIS 8 and MIS 6 positions) and were separated by a warm period. It is documented by unit A/B – a fossil soil with a very well developed Bt horizon – which attests to its formation in an illuviation process beneath a complex of mixed forests during an interstadial warming that occurred in MIS 7. From this palaeoclimatic reconstruction, it is inferred that the Wartanian cold period should be viewed as a separate glaciation in MIS 6 and the Odranian period should be assigned to MIS 8 in the stratigraphic schema of the Quaternary.

Opis:
This paper presents the results of structural and sedimentological studies carried out in the outcrops of Quaternary (Middle Pleistocene) deposits near the village of Czaple in Lower Silesia, Western Sudetes. Fluvial sands, gravels and glacial tills traditionally assigned to the Middle Polish Pleistocene Glaciations (Odranian Glaciation) crop out in the active gravel pit Czaple II. In these deposits, the authors have recognised and documented numerous mesoscale glaciotectonic deformation structures that were previously undescribed from the mountainous part of the Sudetes. These structures represent effects of sediment deformation in both proglacial and subglacial settings, and include such features as asymmetrical and disharmonic folds, thrusts, steeply inclined reverse faults, normal faults and conjugate sets of fractures. Based on the orientation of kinematic indicators associated with the faults and fracture planes (slickensides, hackles, grooves, R-shears) within the fine-grained sediments and in sands and gravels, an S- and SE-directed horizontal compression due to ice-sheet advance is postulated. This direction is consistent with some relevant other data from the Sudetes, indicating that the Odranian ice sheet advanced into the area of the Sudetes from the north, north-east and north-west.

Opis:
The 14-m-thick sandy succession at Ujście in western Poland formed during the Odranian stadial of the Saalian glaciation, is exceptional in being very well sorted, almost mono-fractional (fine-grained sands) and mono-mineral (mainly quartz grains) and in lacking Scandinavian erratics. The lower sequence (5 metres in thickness) consists of three stacked packages of clinoforms (inclined cross-stratified sands) and is interpreted as having been deposited on a subaqueous fan in a shallow lake during two phases of rising water levels. The upper sand (9 metres in thickness) with (sub) horizontal stratification was redeposited on a subaerial alluvial fan. Distinctive distributary channels that occur in the uppermost part of the subaqueous fan and in the lowermost portion of the alluvial fan may indicate a change in sedimentation style from subaqueous to subaerial. Moreover, the subaerial position of the fan supports the presence of ice-wedge casts that developed under periglacial conditions in the upper part of alluvial fan. The results of granulometric analysis, rounding and frosting of grains and mineral analysis indicate that the sands are derived from Gorzów Formation of Early Miocene age. The only feasible explanation is that the 14-m-thick unit must have been redeposited during the Saalian glaciation.

Opis:
W artykule przedyskutowano zagadnienie wpływu rzeźby terenu i budowy geologicznej dużej doliny rzecznej na jakość materiału zawartego w dwóch rdzeniach z utworami organogenicznymi.
The article discusses the impact of the relief and geological structure of a large river valley on the quality of material in two cores of organic deposits. The location of both sites was highlighted, the relief of the physicographical mesoregion in which the research was carried out and the geomorphology of the immediate surroundings of the sites were characterised, and geological conditions were discussed in more detail. Sequences of changes in Cladocera subfossil fauna at both sites were presented and the obtained record of their transformations was interpreted. Additionally, the results of analyses of five selected physicochemi-cal parameters of the tested organic compositions were considered, and the obtained data were interpreted. It was concluded that the location of the studied cores in the valleys of large rivers had a significant impact on the quality of material analysed, which ultimately affects the certainty with which environmental changes and increasing human impact can be inferred and the reliability with which they can be reconstructed.

Opis:
The Upper Odra Lobe - the southernmost part of the Scandinavian ice sheet during the Odranian (Drenthe) glaciation - was formed in the area of the Niemodlin Plain and the western part of the Racibórz Basin. It created a complex structure consisting of several sublobes: Odra, Nysa, Ruda and Klodnica sublobes. The study focused on the basal till deposited during ice sheet advance. Ice flow directions and the general pattern ofice mass distribution in the Upper Odra Lobe were defined based on the clast fabric. The resulting distribution of ice-flow palaeodirections suggest that the Upper Odra Lobe was formed by the mass of ice moving divergently from the Opole Plain located to the north of the Racibórz Basin. Ice-flow lines coincide with the pattern of major geomorphological units. The most intensive movement of the ice took place in the depression of the central part of the Silesian Lowland. From there, in the vicinity of the Niemodlin Plain, the ice sheet moved in different directions, forming smaller sublobes in several valleys. Strong relationship between the ice flow directions and morphology confirms the idea of a smaller ice sheet extent in the Racibórz Basin and Moravian Gate. Highly concentrated flow of ice in the back-lobe area, interpreted in this study, suggests that the lobe development resulted not only from the ice sheet adapting to the basement relief, but was also conditioned by a spatially varying distribution of ice, i.e. increased ice supply to the Niemodlin Plain and the western part ofthe Racibórz Basin.

Opis:
Petrographic studies covered 20-60 mm coarse gravel and 4-10 mm medium-grained fractions of two till horizons (units ŁS II and ŁS IV) and two beds of sand-gravelly-outwash deposits(units ŁS I and ŁS III) associated with the Odra Glaciation (MIS6) in Łubienica-Superunki on the North Mazovian Lowland. Regardless of the facies type and grain sise, crystalline rocks dominate over all other petrographic groups in all samples. The percentage of crystalline rocks is greater among coarse gravel (average 74.7%) than among medium-grain gravel (average 67.8%). The share of carbonate rocks is limited only to the both lower units ŁS I and ŁS II. The upper units (ŁS III and ŁS IV) are deprived of these rocks, both in the medium and coarse gravel fraction. Sandstones, presented in all samples, were in the range of 5-20%. From the other petrographic groups, individual chalk limestones clasts, dolomites, flints and quartz grains were identified in the material. The indicator erratics were identified in all four units. Their percentage content stands for 10-18% of the total sample of coarse-grained fraction. Among them, the most common were the erratics derived from the Åland Islands, and then from the area of south-eastern Sweden (Smaland) and from Dalarna in central Sweden. Amongst the erratics with limited indicator significance, Lower Paleozoic limestones and Jotnian sandstones were most frequent. Single fragments of Ordovician red and Paleoporella limestone were present. These rocks, including the Lower Paleozoic grey limestone, occurred only in thelowerunits(ŁS I and ŁS II). The results of the research suggest that the two lower sediment units should be correlated with a ice-sheet advance (Middle Polish Complex, Odranian Stadial?), and the two upper ones - with a separate, subsequent advancement (Wartanian?). The paper is another methodological contribution to the consideration of abandoning the tedious testing of glacial till and focusing on a much faster petrographic analysis of fluvioglacial sediments associated with the same ice sheet. This is demonstrated by the comparable results of the petrographic analysis of short transport outwash sediments and till from a single glacial period.

Opis:
The Orłowo Cliff is built of glacial and fluvioglacial deposits, Middle Polish Glaciations (possibly Odranian and Warthanian) and Vistulian Glaciation. Deposits are heavily deformed glaciotectonically. In the northern part of the cliff, Miocene sediments are exposed. It is possible, that the Miocene sediments were dislo-cated from their primary position. There were observed overthrusts and intermingling with Pleistocene material in the lower part of the exposure. The Orłowo Headland is built of glacial tills. It is probably a part of fold, similar in pattern to the structure of overthrust folds present in silty-sandy-grained deposits in the southern part of the cliff. Apart from folds and overthrusts there are many faults and the boudinage. Structural analysis of glaciotectonic deformations in conjunction with origin of deposits and statigraphic research enabled the recognition of several stages of development of deformations. Two local directions of glaciotectonic transport were marked clearly: from the north-east, which was connected with glacier invasion in the OEwiecie Stadial of the Vistulian Glaciation, and direction from north-west (north north-west), related to the Main Stadial of the Vistulian Glaciation.
