    Opis:
    The aim of this article is to confront the category of the naked evil, based on the literary example of the Ukrainian trilogy (Wyspa ocalenia, Zasypie wszystko zawieje…, Zmierzch świata) by the polish author Włodzimierz Odojewski, with the category of the invisible evil. The latter is taken as the mediation of today`s world, mainly perceived in the optics of the media, manipulating the information and distorting the objectivity, causing it to form a distorted image, which is hard to evaluate. This takes away the possibility to emerge one, true picture of the world. Evil in this meaning leads us to question the human and his perception, which in both cases is exposed to destruction, bordering with the insanity. Literary view of the world and human in the works of Odojewski is like a dark, rapid river, which is impossible to control. It depicts the trembling, individual psychology, which is lost in the wartime cataclysm. The omnipresent evil is portrayed by Odojewski by the stream of consciousness. Juxtaposition of the visible and unseen evil is the tool of reflection on the world. It gives the pretext to analyze today`s perception of the reality. The characters in the prose reacts with the insanity to the wartime realm. Their sensual reception is adapted to their life – the warzone. This situation creates the space of afterthought on the way in which we organize our world nowadays. We perceive more and more information about another bloody conflicts. However, the medium has changed. Our senses are also mediated – but now, by the mass media and other devices. How does today`s man copy with this double mediation? Does it bring us closer to the insanity, as seen in the Ukrainian trilogy?

    The article is a collection of thoughts that transpired during the work at the Archive of Włodzimierz Odojewski. The aim of the authors was to identify and indicate the potential ways to study the life and works of the writer, and the expected result of the research is a biography of Odojewski. The research was based on the exploration of the writer’s private collection: unpublished documents, manuscripts, typescripts, personal papers, correspondence, family and estate papers and photographs. The authors focused on a number of issues. One, the biographical facts that influenced Odojewski’s output – World War II, frequent relocations, censorship and a ban on publishing in Poland, emigration, the relation with the Polish Institute in Maisons-Laffitte and working at Radio Free Europe’s editorial office. Two, the analysis of literary works including hundreds of typescripts in many variants (related to the phases of the genetic history of a literary work through the stages of Odojewski’s life) which allowed for describing Odojewski’s writing techniques. Three, ‘The writer’s map’ which points out places important for the author – Poznań, Gniezno, Kłecko, Podole,Szczecin, Warsaw, Paris, Berlin, Munich. Four, the correspondence (personal and cultural) which can be used as an important source of knowledge of the history of Polish post-war emigration. One of the most interesting parts of the collection is a collection of letters from Jerzy Giedroyć that show Polish culture outside the Iron Curtain.

    Treating the literary work as a purely intentional object R. Ingarden refused it veracity in the epistemic sense. However, if one looks at an actual literary work from the perspective of the reader or literary scholar, he should notice that in a peculiar way it is a carrier of truth. At the same time the multi-layer character of this truth is revealed. Włodzimierz Odojewski's fiction may serve as an example here, as it carries the truth of understanding reality.     The article aims to analyse four important point of view novels, namely Henry James’ The Ambassadors, Zasypie wszystko, zawieje [Everything Will Be Covered by the Snow] by Włodzimierz Odojewski, The Flanders Road by Claude Simon, and Morfina [Morphine] by Szczepan Twardoch. The notion of point of view serves as a starting point for considering the epistemological aspects of the novel and for tracing its evolution. James, both in his theory and novelistic practice, uses the point of view to make the character’s consciousness the main theme of his novels. Odojewski employs internal monologue to render the characters’ perspective, while Simon combines internal monologue with other voices. Finally, Twardoch’s novel can be interpreted as a parody of the point of view technique.

    The article consists of two parts. The first includes a presentation of the records collected in the Archive of Włodzimierz Odojewski in Poznań and a reflection on the writer’s creative method. The second part presents an outline of research prospects in the field of genetic criticism, which opens materials gathered in that archive. The authors discussed how to study typescripts and manuscripts of the writer and how editors should prepare them, bearing in mind Odojewski’s specific work method.
    Artykuł składa się z dwóch części. Pierwsza obejmuje prezentację zbiorów Archiwum Włodzimierza Odojewskiego w Poznaniu i refleksję nad metodą twórczą pisarza, a druga przedstawia zarys perspektyw badawczych w dziedzinie krytyki genetycznej, które otwierają zgromadzone w tymże archiwum materiały. Autorzy zastanawiają się nad tym, jak można badać maszynopisy i rękopisy pisarza oraz jak powinno się opracowywać je edytorsko, mając na uwadze indywidualny sposób pracy Odojewskiego.

    W artykule odtworzono i przeanalizowano przed-teksty trzech opowiadań Włodzimierza Odojewskiego, reprezentujących dojrzałą i późną fazę jego twórczości – Ku Dunzynańskiemu Wzgórzu idzie las, Co słychać w ojczyźnie, Sezon w Wenecji. Pracę oparto na spuściźnie literackiej znajdującej się w archiwum pisarza na Wydziale Filologii Polskiej i Klasycznej UAM w Poznaniu. Jako szczególny obiekt rekonstrukcji i analizy wybrano kolejne redakcje początkowych akapitów wspomnianych opowiadań. W procesie tekstotwórczym każdego z nich autor podejmował kilka- lub kilkunastokrotnie pisanie i redagowanie kolejnych ujęć inicjalnej partii utworów. W każdym z przypadków inna tendencja okazywała się nadrzędną cechą pisarskiego wysiłku – raz było to dążenie do zawieszenia stanu świadomości bohatera utworu, kiedy indziej do odwlekania spotkania narratora z dawnym znajomym, za jeszcze innym razem chodziło o skrócenie dystansu czasowego i osobowego. Genetyka wybranych tekstów Odojewskiego dostarcza istotnych wskazówek i impulsów do podejmowania nowych (lub pogłębiania i korygowania już istniejących) interpretacji badanych opowiadań.
    The paper reconstructs and analyzes the avant-texts of three short stories by Włodzimierz Odojewski, representing the mature, late phase of his work: Ku Dunzynańskiemu Wzgórzu idzie las, Co słychać w ojczyźnie, Sezon w Wenecji. The paper is based on Odojewski’s archive at the AMU Faculty of Polish and Classical Studies in Poznań. Subsequent editions of the opening paragraphs of the three stories mentioned above were selected as a special object of reconstruction and analysis. In the text-forming process of each one Odojewski edited the text several times. In each case a different tendency proved to be a superior characteristic of the writing effort – in one case the aim was to show a suspension of a protagonist’s consciousness, in one – to postpone a meeting between the narrator and his old friend, and in one – reducing the temporal and personal distance. The genetics of selected texts by Odojewski provides significant clues and impulses for making new (or deepening and correcting the already existing) interpretations of the studied short stories.

    The study retraces and investigates Włodzimierz Odojewski’s (1930–2016) process of writing two short stories between 1976 and 1993 by interrogating the manuscripts (handwritten and typed) from the writer’s personal archive, maintained by the Faculty of Polish and Classical Philology of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. To document the genesis of the stories, the author draws on analytical methods proposed by French text geneticists (Pierre-Marc De Biasi, Jean Bellemin-Noël) and American scholar John Bryant (author of the fluid text concept). The investigation is focused on selected clusters of revisions made in Odojewski’s manuscripts – edits made to the title and the opening paragraphs, alongside various deletions, corrections, and additions. The investigation is premised on the argument that in the course of a long creative act, writers typically strive for compositions that most precisely reflect the nuances of their characters’ mental states and the settings of their stories. As performed by Odojewski, the creative act serves as an example of the inherent volatility of writing, which ultimately produces highly fluid characters.
    W studium dokonano rekonstrukcji i analizy procesu pisania dwóch opowiadań Włodzimierza Odojewskiego (1930–2016) powstałych w latach 1976–1993. Autor bada bruliony (rękopisy i maszynopisy) przechowywane w archiwum pisarza na Wydziale Filologii Polskiej i Klasycznej UAM w Poznaniu. Praca nad dokumentacją genezy opowiadań odbywa się przy pomocy narzędzi zaproponowanych przez francuskich genetyków tekstu (P-M. de Biasi, J. Bellemin-Noël) i amerykańskiego badacza J. Bryanta (pojęcie płynnego tekstu /fluid text/). Analiza dotyczy wybranych skupisk zmian w brulionach utworów Odojewskiego – redakcje tytułu, początkowych akapitów, a także skreślenia, poprawki, uzupełnienia. Punktem dojścia studium jest stwierdzenie, że toku długotrwałego aktu twórczego pisarz dąży do konstrukcji, które w sposób maksymalnie precyzyjny oddają niuanse stanów psychicznych bohaterów oraz scenerii akcji opowiadań. Akt twórczy w wykonaniu Odojewskiego jest przykładem niestabilności pisania, którego efektem są kreacje płynnych postaci.
