The article discusses the issue of the postsecular turn in contemporary anthropology, taking into account the cultural processes involved in its emergence. The author attempts to identify research areas and issues worthy of exploring within this turn, and at the same time she considers the boundary conditions for its usefulness in scientific research. Referring to the recent anthropological literature on this topic, the author distinguishes two leading epistemological attitudes involved in this turn: the one that acknowledges the supernatural dimension of revelation and the one that sees it as a social fact. Both are heterogenous and each sees the relationship between anthropology and theology differently. Discussing some anthropological views in this regard, the author aims to revive the dialogue between researchers from various social and human sciences representing the postsecular turn. On the one hand, this dialogue can initiate new paths of mutual inspiration and co-thinking; on the other hand, it may lead to more conscious distinctions between different varieties of postsecular reflection.
Celem artykułu jest refleksja nad specyfiką zwrotu postsekularnego we współczesnej antropologii, uwzględniająca jego uwarunkowania społeczno-kulturowe oraz związane z nim postawy epistemologiczne. Autorka próbuje wskazać obszary badań i zagadnienia, które powinny być przedmiotem eksploracji tego zwrotu, a zarazem określić warunki brzegowe wykorzystywania wypracowanych na jego gruncie narzędzi analitycznych w badaniach naukowych. Odnosząc się do najnowszej literatury przedmiotu, autorka wyróżnia w antropologii dwie wiodące postawy epistemologiczne zaangażowane w ów zwrot: uznające rzeczywistość objawienia oraz odrzucające taką możliwość (naturalistyczne). Dostrzega, że w ich ramach wysuwane są różnorakie pomysły na to, jak mogłaby wyglądać i czemu służyć kooperacja antropologii z teologią. Prezentując antropologiczne odsłony owego zwrotu, tekst ma na celu ożywienie dialogu między reprezentującymi go badaczami uprawiającymi różne nauki humanistyczne i społeczne. Dialog ten z jednej strony może zainicjować nowe ścieżki wzajemnych inspiracji i współmyślenia, z drugiej zaś doprowadzić do bardziej świadomych dystynkcji między różnymi wariantami tego zwrotu.

The so-called animal turn in literature has fostered the evolution of animal studies, a discipline aimed at interrogating the ontological, ethical, and metaphysical implications of animal depictions. Animal studies deals with representation and agency in literature, and its insights have fundamental implications for understanding the conception and progression of human-animal interactions. Considering questions raised by animal studies in the context of literary depictions of animals in science fiction, this article threads John Berger’s characterization of the present as a time of radical marginalization of animals in his essay “Why Look at Animals?” through two highly influential science fiction texts: H. G. Wells’s The Island of Doctor Moreau and Philip K. Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?. Applying Berger’s reasoning to these two novels raises issues of personhood, criteria for ontological demarcation, and the dynamics of power, providing an opportunity to clarify, modify, and refute a number of his finer claims. This process of refinement allows us to track conceptions of human-animal interactions through the literary landscape and explore their extrapolations into various speculative contexts, including the frontiers of science and post-apocalyptic worlds.

The article reflects on the “actual aspect”, that is, the “real now”, the “hour of salvation”, as described by St. Paul, who sees parousia as a new way of understanding the eschatology rooted in the ordinary “now” life of the Christians. Jesus’ resurrection is an event par excellence dependent solely on the action of God’s power in history. Hence the end of the times, which is the end of time, is something already present within history and within the passage of time. The article also introduces and deepens one of the intuitions of the biblical scholar Ugo Vani SJ, which concerns the so-called “qualitative”, “vertical” eschatology. It refers to the change of perspective brought about by the event of Christ’s death and resurrection, which highlights the Christian experience of “being saved”. This experience characterizes “eschatological tension” as the tension between the “not yet” and “already” being saved. Finally, the article examines 1 Thess. 5: 1-11. Its aim is to discover the kerygmatic value of the Gospel of Paul and the ontology of the baptized contained in the statement “we are children of light and children of the day” (1 Thess 5: 5).
W artykule zostaje podjęta refleksja nad „aktualnym aspektem”, czyli „rzeczywistym teraz”, „godziną zbawienia”, tak, jak jest to ujęte przez św. Pawła, który postrzega paruzję jako nowy sposób rozumienia eschatologii zakorzenionej w zwyczajnym „dziś” życia chrześcijan. Zmartwychwstanie Jezusa jest wydarzeniem par excellence zależnym wyłącznie od działania mocy Boga w historii. Stąd koniec czasów, który jest końcem czasu, jest czymś już obecnym wewnątrz historii i wewnątrz upływającego czasu. Artykuł przybliża i pogłębia także jedną z intuicji biblisty Ugo Vaniego SJ, która dotyczy tzw. „eschatologii jakościowej”, „wertykalnej”. Odnosi się ona do zmiany perspektywy, jakiej dokonuje wydarzenie śmierci i zmartwychwstania Chrystusa, które uwydatnia właściwe dla chrześcijanin doświadczenie „bycia zbawionym”. Doświadczenie to charakteryzuje „napięcie eschatologiczne” jako napięcie między „jeszcze nie” i „już” bycia zbawionym. W niniejszym artykule zostaje przeprowadzona wreszcie analiza fragmentu 1 Tes 5, 1-11. Jej celem jest odkrycie wartości kerygmatycznej ewangelii Pawła i ontologii ochrzczonego zawartej w stwierdzeniu: „jesteśmy dziećmi światła i dziećmi dnia” (1 Tes 5, 5).

The article is an analysis of the eight criteria for truth in a work of art, as put forward by R. Ingarden in his phenomenological aesthetics. It is an attempt at a return to Polish philosophical theory on current postmodern literature. V. Pelevin's novel Buddha's little finger was chosen to demonstrate the return to rationalist and realist traditions in literary criticism, which is currently under the strong influence of postmodern discourse.
W artykule przedstawiona jest analiza ośmiu kryteriów prawdziwości dzieła sztuki, wyliczonych przez R. Ingardena w ramach jego estetyki fenomenologicznej. W taki sposób podjęta została próba przybliżenia teoretycznego programu polskiego filozofa na materiale współczesnej literatury postmodernistycznej. Jako ilustracja dla eksperymentu powrotu do racjonalistycznej i realistycznej tradycji w krytyce literaturoznawczej, znajdującej się obecnie pod mocnym wpływem prądów postmodernistycznych, została wybrana powieść W. Pelewina „Mały palec Buddy”.

This book review is about the French translation of a book by the anthropologist Arturo Escobar that, though it has not been translated into English yet, deserves to be known by English readers. This book is quite important since it allows one to understand occidental, capitalist and modern hegemony not only as an economic domination but above all as a cultural, epistemological and ontological colonisation. Indeed, according to Escobar, this domination takes its roots in the Occident’s ontology which translates into hegemonic practices that are concrete threats to the other worlds and their dwellers. Thus, Escobar highlights the deep link between ontologies and practices and argues for a new field of study he calls political ontology or ontological politics. To accompany the proposition of a shift from a universal nature to a pluriverse composed of many worlds, Escobar does not only undermine the prejudices of modernity but also puts forward the relational ontologies from indigenous communities of Latin America that concretely resist colonisation, underlining the ontological dimension of their struggles. Such a framework enables one to overcome or at least minimize the distinction between theory and practice.

This article presents the views of Maurizio Ferraris, one of today’s best-known Italian middle-generation philosophers. Since the end of the 1990s, he has been constructing a concept he calls new realism. It is a critique of postmodernism defined in the broad sense, which, in Ferraris’ view, is characterised by the primacy of interpretation over facts, epistemology over ontology, conceptual schemes over reality. Ferraris assumes the possibility of strictly separating the two cognitive activities: the primary determination of facts and their secondary interpretation. Ferraris’ realist views are also expressed in his aesthetics and the concept of social document, founded on the notion of trace understood in the material sense. The author also attempts to critique Ferraris’ views on his understanding of realism and interpretation.

Opis:
Student engagement and retention are major concerns for universities around the world. It is vital to improve student retention by delivering quality education and engaging students in their studies, leading to student success and graduation and integration in the workforce. This study examines a degree of engagement in two Polish universities. The aim of this research was to evaluate and compare student engagement between two respondent groups. Data for this study were collected from 394 university students through selfevaluation using internet-based survey instrument. The differences between the universities were compared according to the current state, target state and, creative tension, describing the gap between a person’s feeling of current reality and target for future. The analysis of the test results clearly demonstrated the possibility to use such an application to evaluate the students’ engagement and, the comparison clearly identified considerable differences between the two university cases.
Zaangażowanie i utrzymywanie studentów to ważna kwestia uniwersytetów na całym świecie. Konieczne jest poprawienie retencji studentów przez ich angażowanie i zapewnianie wysokiej jakości edukacji. Badanie dotyczy oceny i porównania stopnia zaangażowania studentów w dwóch polskich uczelniach. W badaniu zebrano dane dotyczące 394 studentów w ramach samooceny przeprowadzonej za pomocą internetowego narzędzia ankietowego. Różnice między uniwersytetami zostały porównane zgodnie z stanem aktualnym i docelowym, opisując lukę między odczuwaniem obecnej rzeczywistości a celami na przyszłość. Analiza wyników testów wyraźnie pokazała możliwość wykorzystania aplikacji do oceny zaangażowania uczniów, a porównanie wyraźnie wskazało znaczne różnice między dwoma przypadkami uniwersyteckimi.

The unusual applicability of mathematics to the description of the physical reality still remains a major investigative task for philosophers, physicists, mathematicians and cognitive scientists. The presented article offers a critical analysis of the philosophical motivations and development of a major attempt to resolve this task put forward by two prominent Polish philosophers: Józef Życiński and Michał Heller. In order to explain this particular property of mathematics Życiński has first introduced the concept of the field of rationality together with the field of potentiality to be followed by Heller’s formal field and the field of categories. It turns out that these concepts are fully intelligible once located within philosophical stances on the relations between mathematics and physical reality. It will be argued that in order to achieve more extended conceptual clarification of the precise meaning of the field of rationality, further advancements in the understanding of the nature of the human mind are required.

The progress of the social science disciplines depends on conducting relevant research. However, research methodology adopted and choices made during the course of the research project are underpinned by varying ontological, epistemological and axiological positions that may be known or unknown to the researcher. This paper sought to critically explore the philosophical underpinnings of the social science research. It was suggested that a “multiversal” ontological position, positivist-hermeneutic epistemological position and value-laden axiological position should be adopted for social science research by non-western scholars as alternative to the dominant naïve realist, positivist, and value-free orientation. Against the backdrop of producing context-relevant knowledge, non-western scholars are encouraged to re-examine their philosophical positions in the conduct of social science research.

Alfred Irving Hallowell (1892–1974), a seasoned researcher of the Ojibwe culture, is known today primarily as a precursor of the anthropological theory of the “new animism”. A student of Franz Boas and a friend of Edward Sapir, he was not only a prominent figure of the culture and personality school, but also proved to be one of the most interesting psychological anthropologists of the 20th century. His works on the Ojibwe indigenous taxonomy prefigured the achievements of ethnoscience, and those on the evolution of human behavior adumbrated the development of sociobiology. Conducted in the 1930s, Hallowell’s fieldwork among the Berens River Ojibwe resulted in numerous academic papers, one of which – the 1960 Ojibwa Ontology, Behavior, and World View – years later became particularly influential in anthropological research on animism. This article presents Hallowell’s intellectual biography and discusses his research on the Ojibwe culture along with the concepts he used or developed, concepts that for many researchers became the key to unlocking new conceptualizations of the problem of animism.

In the paper we argue that no neat border line between ontology and epistemology can be drawn. This is due to the fact that the separation between factual and conceptual is rather fuzzy, and the world is characterized by a sort of ontological opacity which makes the construction of any absolute ontology difficult. Our ontology is characterized by the fact that the things of nature are seen by us in terms of a conceptual apparatus that is inevitably influenced by mind-involving elements, and all this has important consequences on both the question of scientific realism and the realism/anti-realism debate. Conceptualization gives us access to the world, while, on the other, it is the most important feature of our cultural evolution. While the idealistic thesis according to which the mind produces natural reality looks hardly tenable, it is reasonable to claim instead that we perceive this same reality by having recourse to the filter of a conceptual apparatus whose presence is, in turn, connected to the development of language and social organization. Our science is essentially relational, and not absolute. The information with which it provides us is appropriate, but from our point of view. Science provides reliable information on the world, but this information is always relative to a particular framework, and it is a mistake to think that the limits of our cognitive capacities only have an aprioristic character. Science constantly attempts at providing answers to our questions about how things stand in the world, and thus purports to offer reliable information about it. But it should also be recognized that the extent to which science succeeds in accomplishing this task is disputable. What kind of realism, thus, can we actually endorse? Despite what many relativists claim, realism still is an arguable and defendable position. If one asks what difference is made to our knowledge claims if we accept the existence of an extra-conceptual world, the answer is the following: such recognition undermines the diffused anthropocentric stance which identifies reality with our limited knowledge of it.

This paper deals with a methodology for the implementation of cloud manufacturing (CM) architecture. CM is a current paradigm in which dynamically scalable and virtualized resources are provided to users as services over the Internet. CM is based on the concept of coud computing, which is essential in the Industry 4.0 trend. A CM architecture is employed to map users and providers of manufacturing resources. It reduces costs and development time during a product lifecycle. Some providers use different descriptions of their services, so we propose taking advantage of semantic web technologies such as ontologies to tackle this issue. Indeed, robust tools are proposed for mapping providers’ descriptions and user requests to find the most appropriate service. The ontology defines the stages of the product lifecycle as services. It also takes into account the features of coud computing (storage, computing capacity, etc.). The CM ontology will contribute to intelligent and automated service discovery. The proposed methodology is inspired by the ASDI framework (analysis–specification–design–implementation), which has already been used in the supply chain, healthcare and manufacturing domains. The aim of the new methodology is to propose an easy method of designing a library of components for a CM architecture. An example of the application of this methodology with a simulation model, based on the CloudSim software, is presented. The result can be used to help the industrial decision-makers who want to design CM architectures.

Opis:
The Medical information systems evolve constantly. The quality of the medical information system relies on competences, qualifications, and the organization of the participating partners. Those last ones belong to heterogeneous and autonomous information systems. So, it is necessary to assure a permanent cooperation. This paper shows a coherent architectural framework that allows the development of interoperable medical information systems in measure or these systems evolve. The essential idea is to use concepts of multi-agent systems to perform the different activities of medical information system and thus, to adapt the solutions provided by the agent paradigm to solve the different problems encountered while establishing a medical information system.
