Opis:
The objective of the study was to trace the variability of the hydrochemical conditions in three lakes of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship (Poland) - Starzyca, Maszewskie and Nowogardzkie in the annual cycle. The research was done in 2018-2019, and samples for analysis were collected 4 times a year. All analyses were performed applying standard methods. Such hydrochemical indices were determined as dissolved oxygen, chemical oxygen demand, content of orthophosphates, total phosphorus, nitrite, nitrate, ammonium, chlorophyll a and iron. The study showed that all lakes in the research cycle were characterised by a polymictic type of water mixing, and the trophic level, based on the adopted criteria, indicated advanced eutrophy, which may also be caused by anthropogenic pressure. Oxygen conditions characterised by deoxidation of the waters in the bottom layer in the spring and summer seasons, and clear oxygenation in the surface water layer (in Lake Maszewskie reaching even 188.5% in the spring) confirm the significant advancement of the eutrophication process. The supply of phosphorus and nitrogen in spring from pelagic waters in the waters of the examined lakes influences concentrations of chlorophyll a in the summer. The influence of “internal supply” (bottom waters and bottom sediments) on the amount of nutrients available for autotrophs is clearly visible in the analysed lakes - an increase in nitrogen and mineral phosphorus concentrations in relation to surface waters was observed in the bottom layer.

Opis:
This paper presents the effects of an application of Effective Microorganisms (EM) technology in line with the method developed by Sitarek, thus evaluating its effectiveness as a tool in the biological restoration of a water body. In 2012-2013, EM was applied in Muchawka Reservoir situated in the town of Siedlce (eastern Poland). Analyses of water parameters and bottom sediments were carried out in 2011, before the EM technology was implemented and again in 2013-2015 after the EM application was completed. In spring 2011, the average total nitrogen (TN) content at the surface was 3.1 mg dm-3 while the total mineral nitrogen content equalled 0.893 mg dm-3. After the EM application was completed, in the summer of 2013, the TN content was on average 2.5 mg dm-3. The content of nitrates and nitrites in the summer of 2013 reached 1.20 mg dm-3 at the most. Lower levels of such forms of nitrogen were observed in 2013 and also in subsequent years at the bathing beach (site 1) and the hostel (site 3) than at the inflow (site 4). Likewise, the highest content of phosphates was recorded at the inflow site (4), being four -fold lower at the other sites (1, 3). The average content of TP before the EM technology was applied was 0.205 mg dm-3, whereas after the application of effective microorganisms it fell down to 0.189 mg dm-3 (2013-2015). Only slight changes of TSITP indicated that waters in Muchawka Reservoir were eutrophic. After EM was applied twice, no streaks, cyanobacterial scums or pollution at the bathing sites were visible. The bacteriological evaluation of the water samples was carried out by the County Branch of the State Sanitary Inspectorate in Siedlce. The bacteriological water quality was described as “excellent”. These findings suggest that the method developed by Sitarek, combined with probiotic preparations, could be a useful tool in the restoration of water bodies, but the conclusion requires further detailed verification.

Opis:
There are 9 dairy facilities having their own wastewater treatment plants in Podlasie province. In majority, they were built in 70’s of the 20th century, when “Promlecz” technology based on high and low-loaded sludge activated chambers dominated. According to data from 2008, the amount of disposed wastewaters is from 470 to 5200 m3 d–1, at personal equivalent (P.E.) from 7130 to 277 000. Most of wastewater treatment plants requires to be modernized due to their poor technical status along with the increase of production, which is associated with the quantity of generated wastewaters, sludge, and reject water that should be processed. In the case of small treatment plants, the constructed wetland method may be an alternative for advanced and expensive technologies that are usually incorporated during modernization. Vertical and horizontal-flow wetlands can successfully work as a second stage of dairy wastewater purification after their preliminary mechanical and biological treatment. The study was carried out on a base of existing installation designed by the author and working in dairy wastewater treatment plant in Wysokie Mazowieckie. Studies were concentrated upon applying the hybrid system consisting of vertical-flow constructed wetland (VF-CW) and horizontal-flow constructed wetland (HF-CW). Wastewater after de- -phosphatation and high-loaded sludge activated chamber were subjected to purification. Mean pollution concentrations in dairy wastewater taken to the researches were: BOD5 (234.1 mg O2 dm–3), COD (332.8 mg O2 dm–3), Kjeldahl’s nitrogen (25.9 mg NTKN dm–3), ammonium nitrogen (13.9 mg N dm–3), total phosphorus (10.9 mg PT dm–3). BOD5 removal efficiency was 84.8 %, Kjeldahl’s nitrogen 81.0 %, ammonium nitrogen 91.0 %, and total phosphorus 39 %, on average. The study confirmed the usefulness of constructed wetland method applied after mechanical and biological stages at dairy wastewater treatment plants.
Efektywność usuwania BZT5 wynosiła średnio 84,8 %, ChZT 85,3 %, azotu Kjeldahla 81,0 %, azotu amonowego 91,0 % i fosforu ogólnego 39 %. Badania udowodniły przydatność zastosowania metody hydrofitowej po stopniu mechanicznym i biologicznym w oczyszczalniach ścieków mleczarskich.

In this study, it was carried out in order to determine the amount of plant nutrients that can be obtained from the wastes of tomato plants grown with soilless agriculture technique in the greenhouse and to make suggestions for evaluation possibilities. For this purpose, cocopeat and plant samples were taken from the soilless greenhouse where tomatoes were grown at the end of production. The stem, leaf, fruit and root of the collected cocopeat and plant samples were separated and N, P, K, analyzes were made in these separated samples. According to the results obtained, the amount of N that can be added to the soil with the cocopeat wastes is determined as 10.58 kg, the amount of P 0.09 kg and the amount of K 0.52 kg for one decare area. The total N amount that can be gained from the roots, stems, leaves and fruits of the waste tomato plant per decare area was determined as 6.65-11.97 kg, P content 1.22-2.52 kg and K amount between 5.10-18.21 kg. Considering the distribution of the amount of NPK that can be added to the soil according to the plant parts. On average, 4.18 kg in root, 2.50 kg in stem, 7.58 kg in leaf and 7.46 kg in fruit were found to be wasted due to not evaluating plant wastes. The organ with the highest N content among plant parts is the leaf, and 42.73% of the total N is found in the leaf. P and K are mostly found in fruits. In addition, 41.73% of P and 36.62% of K are excreted with fruit. It will be possible to improve the soils with insufficient organic matter content throughout Turkey by composting the wastes from greenhouses. In addition, it has been determined that these wastes are very important in terms of reducing the visual pollution caused by these wastes, harmful emissions that will arise as a result of burning and bringing them into the economy.

The study presents the results of the treatment of domestic and industrial wastewater with respect to the reduction of nitrogen and phosphorus compounds. The analysis encompasses the results of physical and chemical tests of effluents from two facilities based on hydroponic technology: wastewater treatment plants with hydroponic lagoons using the BIOPAX technology – Paczków, Poland and the Organica technology – Szarvas, Hungary. Monthly treatment effectiveness was determined basing on these analyses. The composition of wastewater flowing into the lagoon (after mechanical treatment) and wastewater discharged to the collector in 2009–2011 was subject to physical and chemical analysis in both facilities. The effluent quality was determined basing on the concentration of total phosphorus, total nitrogen and ammonium nitrogen. Mean annual results of the operation of both objects were high. For the wastewater treatment plant in Paczkow, operating in the BIOPAX technology, the effectiveness of treatment with respect to total nitrogen throughout the analysed period ranged from 76.9–84.4%. Total phosphorus was eliminated from wastewater with an effectiveness of 96.4–98.0%. Such high reduction level was caused by the application of additional precipitation process in the chambers of activated sludge reactor. The hydroponic plant in Szarvas (Organica technology) was characterised by a high effectiveness of reduction with respect to ammonium nitrogen: 92.0–93.0%, while the reduction of total phosphorus fell into the range 49.3–55.3%.

The aim of the present work was the preparation and properties evaluation of two innovative fertilizers based on multicomponent polymers characterized by a controlled release of nutrients. One method was based on a multi-component liquid containing different amounts of microelements NPK 12-5-6 fertilizers with polyacrylamide hydrogel beads. The second method concerned the cross-linking of biodegradable polyvinyl alcohol with multi-component NPK fertilizers. Polyacrylamide-based compositions with the highest amount of NPK salts as well as polyvinyl alcohol-based fertilizers in dense gel form, based on 60 phr crosslinking concentrate have shown optimal properties. Regardless of the type of fertilizers used, their components were released slowly. The obtained fertilizers were classifi ed according to the kinetics of nutrient release. Fertilizers made from polyacrylamide based fertilizers have been classifi ed into a group of controlled release fertilizers (CRF), while those made from biodegradable environmentally friendly polyvinyl alcohol have been defi ned as slow released fertilizers (SRF).

Opis:
In the years 2008-2011, an environmental study was conducted for Polish soils, focusing on the south-eastern Poland soils, as they exhibit significant acidification. This study aimed at assessing the current pHKCl and the supply of basic macro- (P, K, Mg and S-SO4) and microelements (B, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn) in the collected soil samples, and also at determining their relationship with the soil agronomic category, humus content and pH class. Soil reaction and humus and macronutrient content were positively correlated with the amount of colloidal clay and particles < 0.02 mm. In the majority of cases, the macro-element content in the soil was positively correlated with soil pH and humus content. As for microelements, a usually significant and positive correlation was found between the soil agronomic category and the content of manganese, iron and zinc, whereas for the content of boron and copper, no such relationship was observed. A significant and positive correlation between soil reaction and the content of manganese, iron and boron was also found. Such correlations were not observed in relation to copper and zinc content. Statistical analysis indicated that the content of boron and manganese depended to the greatest extent on the investigated physicochemical properties.

The present study investigated the efficiency of four aquatic macrophytes: Lemna spp, Pistia stratiotes, Ipomoea aquatica and Eichhornia crassipes on nitrogen and phosphorous utilization from aquacultural effluents concerning seasonal changes and biomass production. These nutrients in excess affect fish health and cause eutrophication in water bodies, hence affecting the ecosystem. Aquatic macrophytes were planted in tanks filled with the effluents from carp pond and other tanks were left without plants, serving as control/algal treatment. The water samples were collected weekly for analysis of total nitrogen (TN), ammonia-nitrogen (NH3-N), nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N), total phosphorus (TP) and ortho-phosphate (ortho-P). The results show that average water temperature raised from 12.2 ± 0.21 °C in winter to 32.0 ± 0.4 °C in summer with no significant difference (p>0.05) between treatments whereas pH was neutral in winter and slightly alkaline in the other seasons. Seasonal changes had impact on macrophytes biomass accumulation with the highest in spring for Lemna spp (91.3%), followed by P. stratiotes (81%) and in summer, E. crassipes (64%). Autumn and winter had the lowest biomass accumulation and I. aquatica had the lowest values in all seasons. For each season, the nutrients concentration decreased with no significant difference (p>0.05) between treatments. Average NH3-N removal efficiencies were higher during summer and autumn followed by spring and lowest in winter for all treatments. NO3-N and TN decreased significantly from the highest in summer to the lowest in winter in all treatments. The ortho-P removal efficiency was slightly higher than TP and decreased from the highest in spring to the lowest in winter (91.4% to 7.8%, control/algae; 90.3% to 8.4%, E. crassipes; 86.2% to 8.3%, Lemna spp; 82.5% to 10.8%, P. stratiotes). The chlorophyll a concentration was higher in Lemna spp (62.2 μg/L) and control/microalgae treatments (59.3 μg/L) indicating that there was probably microbial community that contributed to nutrient utilization. Aquatic macrophytes, in association with microalgae, were responsible for the nitrogen and phosphorous removal. Seasonal temperature change affects the growth and nutrients uptake of aquatic macrophytes. A decrease in temperature reduces the efficiency of nutrients removal and biomass production. For an effective N and P removal from pond effluents in a given season, selection of a proper aquatic macrophyte must be taken into consideration with regards to a given season.

The aim of the study was the comparison of accumulation properties of herbaceous plants in spring niches in relation to macro- and microelements. The shoots of research plant species showed a good supply of macro- and micronutrients. The highest contents of nutrients were found in the shoots of Athyrium filix-femina (Ni), Caltha palustris (Mg, Ca, Sr), Cardamine amara (K, Zn, Fe, Al), Carex rostrata (Mn) and Solanum dulcamara (N, P, Cu), and the lowest in shoots of Ajuga reptans (P, Zn, Mn), Cardamine amara (N, Cu) and Carex rostrata (K, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ni, Fe, Al). Herbaceous plants accumulated from 1767.23 mmol c99%), and microelements ranged from 0.33% in Solanum dulcamara to 0.67% in shoots Cardamine amara. The share of nitrogen was from 38.8% to 56.8% of this amount, phosphorus from 2.9% to 3.9%, potassium from 28.5% to 40.6%, magnesium from 4.8% to 7.6%, and calcium from 4.6% to 16.4%. A large share of iron (from 33.7% Athyrium filix-femina to 39.5% Caltha palustris), manganese (from 9.2% Cardamine amara to 28.8% Carex rostrata) and aluminum (from 16.7% Carex rostrata to 40.8% Cardamine amara) in total measured components indicates excessive downloading them through plants. During the three years of research done in spring niches, it was found that some plant species take up nutrients in the quantities exceeding their physiological demand, which enables to use some of them for forming e.g. artificial wetlands, stopping many impurities and forming protective barriers.

Opis:
The study aimed at the attempt to identify and to evaluate the interaction intensity, and to classify the sources of river waters nutrients in the catchment of upper river Narew within Narew National Park (north-eastern Poland). The studies were carried out on Narew river within borders of Narew National Park, where 5 measurement-control points were localized as well as one near estuaries of its 5 tributaries (Awissa, Czaplinianka, Horodnianka, Turośnianka and Supraśl). Factor analysis (FA) from multi-dimensional group was applied for statistical processing of study results, because it is commonly used to describe and explore a large number of data. concentrations of analyzed chemicals depended on a water sampling point that was under anthropopression and geogenic conditions. Studies and results from analyses (FA and CA) allowed for identifying the main sources of river Narew nutrients within Narew National Park. These are: tributaries of river Narew, point and distributed runoffs, as well as shallow ground waters that transport components having anthropogenic and partially geogenic-lithologic origin. River Turośnianka supplies the largest loads of studied parameters to river Narew within Narew National Park boundaries. River Supraśl is the most contaminated tributary of river Narew.
