Opis:
Nowadays, crimes against archaeological heritage are not associated with social disapproval. Nobody is surprised to see people with metal detectors walking around and looking for the relics of the past. Despite the tightening of legal regulations “treasure hunt” is still very popular in Poland. People are trying to dodge the regulations, joining groups of seekers. They exchange experiences on social media, displaying the feeling of impunity. Where this phenomenon comes from? Can we fight against it?

coin treasures
money circulation
Opis:
The number of coin and isolated artefacts treasures in the modern period (XVI–XVIII centuries) undergoes, first and foremost, statistical and hypothetical analyses. In contrast to the early medieval period, coin treasures found in the Polish land contain coin-shaped gold and silver bullion, but not gold bars, the so-called “placki” – pieces of bullion, although items of everyday use (trays, jugs, chalices, goblets, gravy-boats, etc.) made of precious metals, often decorated with European coins, can be found. It was not unusual to recast coins and medals into medallions and medals in pedants or in decorated belts, which were often studded with ancient coins. One has to remember about a specific role of the coin hidden in the form of a treasure or isolated artefacts. Firstly, it was used as a means of payment and its value was regulated by law. In the case of foreign coins in circulation in the Polish territory, legal regulations were replaced by evaluation tables, which were available to merchants, bankers and all those who officially dealt with money circulation. The function of the coin as a circular means was also very important. Still, not everybody realizes that the coin fulfilled another vital function – it was a means of accumulation of assets – which seemed essential from the point of view of those hiding coin treasures. In the times of economic, political and military unrest, it was the most convenient to accumulate movable property in the form of coins. The appendix attached to this article contains dishes dated by coin treasures from the discussed period.

The question of the identity of the issuer of the so-called “Heraios”coinage is analysed, and it is proposed that these series be ascribed to Kujula Kadphises, as already suggested by some scholars. In this regard, the circulation of these coins and the connections established by their imagery are focused upon. Some possible inferences on the original location of Kujula Kadphises are discussed in the concluding part, hypothesizing a southern context different from the northern one commonly ascribed to the founder of the Kushan dynasty.

The paper deals with the iconography of Timarchos’ ‘Dioscuri coinage’. The remarkable feature of these coins is that this coin type is nearly to be identical to that one of Greco-Bactrian king Eukratides I. The analysis of the stylistics shows the peculiar way of Timarchos’ iconography. Additionally, the ‘Dioscuri motif’ could have stressed the partnership between two rulers.

ICONOGRAPHY
AETERNITAS AUGUSTI
ROMAN NUMISMATICS
IDEOLOGY
Opis:
The paper analyzes the typology of imagery of Aeternitas in the coinage (from Vespasian to the Tetrarchy) propagating the concept of emperor’s eternity. The iconography of Aeternitas is not homogenous, being characterised by an abundance and diversity of motifs and representations. One thing that would not change, a common denominator of sorts, was the figure of a woman in a long dress. Her attributes, however, did fluctuate and depending on their kind symbolised either cosmic eternity or renewable time (phoenix). Aeternitas personified by a woman in long dress, shown in contrapposto, holding a radiant sun and moon was introduced on the reverses of coins in the Flavian period and continued to appear until Hadrian. During that time, the astral attributes would be exchanged for other devices, but although these insignia changed over time, the figure in a long tunic remained, as a permanent  and originally Roman element in the iconography of female personifications of the Roman Empire.

Opis:
Archaeological discoveries made since 2014 at the site of the Roman fort in Apsaros/Gonio (Georgia) have shed more light on the earliest as well as later stages of the presence of the Roman army on the Colchis coast and on the history of the Apsaros fort itself. The paper reports on the new findings concerning the chronology of the Roman fort, and an essential part of the conclusions draws upon the results of numismatic research on recent coin finds from the site. Six years of fieldwork by a Polish-Georgian team have uncovered the remains of a possible horreum, built in the last decade of Nero’s reign, underlying a balneum constructed probably during Trajan’s Parthian war and rebuilt under Hadrian into a praetorium; a fine mosaic floor decorated with geometric motifs was found in one of the rooms of this early 2nd-century structure.

Great work of “the Solun Brothers” – Saints Cyril and Methodius – undoubtedly played important part in the creation of national identity and national awarenessof many Slavic nations. Considering the importance of the legacy of Cyril and Methodius, it seems surprising how rarely their images were used on national coins which are among the most common and most important symbols of independent nations. The only countries to have paid tribute to “the Solun Brothers” in the process of creating their national identities were Slovakia, Czechia,Bulgaria and Macedonia. They did it by placing the saints in cultural, political and ideological contexts on collectors’ items and regular currency.

Opis:
The role of coins is not limited only to a means of payment, but through the various iconographic and epigraphic contents they contain, coins are also a means of cultural communication. The obverse and reverse of coins are a specific form of image, which includes motifs understood as a repeating decorative element that is also a pattern or an iconographic element expressing specific symbolism and themes. Archaeological motifs reflect archaeological monuments or their elements, and their themes commemorate not only the monument itself, but also related aspects studied by archaeologists, e.g. the broadly understood context. The aim of the considerations was to examine the numismatic form of commemorating and popularizing archaeological heritage on the example of selected motifs referring to monuments of Mediterranean archeology appearing on European coins in the years 1990–2005. First, the motifs were analyzed in terms of the form of their depiction on coins, then the archaeological theme with which themotifs were connected was determined and, on its basis, axiological considerations were carried out, the aim of which was to learn a potential answer to the question – why a given motif was placed on a coin.
