Author of the article explores the phenomenon of reportage biography in context of Pierre Nora's notion of „age of commemoration”. The crucial feature of this new genre of biographical writing is that the biographers focus on testimonies of people who personally knew the biographical subject instead of reading and re-reading documents gathered in the archives. Such an attitude has several consequences for the poetics of the biography. Biography becomes polyphonic as a scene of dialogue or confrontation of many different voices, different approaches on the subject. Biography becomes also ex-centric which means that biographical narrative concerns not on the subject as a central figure of biographical discourse, but delivers space for the witnesses to express their historical experience, to tell their life stories. Author of the article presents these matters by analyzing Bruno Schulz's biography Schulz pod kluczem and showing how this poliphony of accounts typical for reportage biography works in nostalgic frame of Budzyński's approach.

W artykule przedstawiam trzy strategie, za pomocą których konstruowany jest krajobraz filmu nostalgicznego. Za jego cechę konstytutywną uznaję obecność zabiegu zapośredniczenia między tym, co obecne, a tym, co utracone. Wyprowadzając z literatury przedmiotu poświęconej nostalgii odmienne teoretyzacje tego zjawiska, zauważam, że w filmie nostalgiczna estetyzacja realizuje się nader często za pośrednictwem funkcji okna. W oparciu o wybrane przykłady filmu nostalgicznego, wyróżniam trzy sposoby, w jakich funkcja ta się przejawia. Nazywam je metaforycznie oknem–gablotą muzealną, oknem–zakurzoną szybę i oknem–portalem.
In my article I present three strategies, in which landscape of nostalgia film is constructed. The main characteristic of this kind of landscape is mechanism of mediation between subject and object of loss. Starting from theories of nostalgia, I notice that aesthetics of nostalgia film is often produced by window figure. By referring to chosen examples of nostalgia film, I distinguish three main strategies, in which window figure is used as mediator between the present and the past. I metaphorically call them window–museum case, dusty windowpane and window–portal.

In the present article I use the terminology introduced by Svetlana Boym of restorative nostalgia and reflective nostalgia regarding works of contemporary fine art. Restorative nostalgia implies an effort to revive the past – but without acknowledging that the desired and idealized past never existed, therefore it cannot be restored, either. I illustrate the application of this concept through the “new-academic” direction in today’s contemporary Hungarian fine arts. The reflective nostalgia is aware of the idealizing momentum of the desired past, it reflects critically upon its own desires, and it highlights possibilities in the past regarding the present – often playfully or with irony. I illustrate the latter through the works of the Chinese Ai Wei Wei and the Romanian Mircea Cantor. I argue that reflective nostalgia is not a fruitless burial into the past, but a resource for processing the passing of time in a creative manner.

W artykule omówiono wybrane filmy młodzieżowe (zrealizowane w Reaganowskiej erze politycznego i kulturowego neokonserwatyzmu) jako fenomen socjologiczny problematyzujący kwestię implikowanego odbiorcy. Główną tezą artykułu jest, że filmy dla nastolatków oparte na „formule Spielberga-Lucasa-Kinga” były, i w pewnym stopniu nadal są, adresowane nie do nastolatków, ale do kidults (amalgamatu dziecka dorosłego) – narcystycznych wiecznych nastolatków. Autorka wykorzystuje elementy teorii współczesnego konsumpcjonizmu Benjamina Barbera, opartej na idei „etosu infantylizmu” – etosu wymuszonej dziecięcości, który nakazuje traktowanie dzieci i kidults jako konsumentów. Filmy są analizowane w odniesieniu do koncepcji multisensorycznej nostalgii skonsumowanej Gary’ego Crossa (oznaczającej pożądanie przedmiotów pochodzących z okresu dla konsumentów formatywnego) jako psychologicznej odpowiedzi na doświadczanie życia w stresogennych realiach kapitalizmu.
The article discusses selected teen movies made in Ronald Reagan’s era of political and cultural neo-conservatism as a sociological phenomenon that problematizes the issue of the implied viewer. The main thesis is that teen movies based on the “Spielberg-Lucas-King formula” were, and to some extent still are, addressed not to teenagers but to kidults (a child-adult amalgam) – narcissistic perennial adolescents. The author uses elements of Benjamin Barber’s theory of modern consumerism based on the idea of “infantilist ethos” – an ethos of induced childishness that results in the targeting of children and kidults as consumers. The films are analysed in the framework of Gary Cross’s concept of multisensory “consumed nostalgia” (defined as a longing for objects rooted in the consumers’ formative years) as a psychological answer to experiencing life under disquieting fast capitalism.

Abstract: Among others, retromania means bringing back the past eras and constructing the memory of them in contemporary popculture. The critical retro is considered here as a set of cinematic devices used in order to manage collective memory and create a certain imagery of the relatively recent past. The critical retro of the 21st century American cinema “aesthetically colonizes” the past, yet in doing so, it does not reflect any nostalgic vision of collective memory. Movies analysed in the article are characteristic for their careful use of the retro fashion and their employment of such devices as extreme or excessive stylization, particular narration, and familiar narrative patterns (family melodrama) in order to influence collective memory of the past. At the same time, what they offer in terms of the story, character, and the perception of the depicted era, is highly subversive because they openly address issues that were either omitted or ignored in the previous years for a number of reasons.
Jednym z aspektów retromanii jest przywracanie/konstruowanie pamięci o minionych epokach we współczesnej popkulturze. W tekście dominuje spojrzenie na krytyczne retro w kinie amerykańskim XXI wieku jako na sposób, w jaki filmowe środki wyrazu są wykorzystywane do budowania określonego wyobrażenia o relatywnie nieodległej przeszłości i konstruowania obejmującej ją pamięci zbiorowej. Znaczenie ma to, w jaki sposób pamięć zbiorowa jest wytwarzana i przechowywana w wytworach kultury, także w kinie, twórcy krytycznego retro posługują się bowiem zestawem wyrazistych, rozpoznawalnych strategii, takich jak – między innymi – samoświadomość wizualna, cytaty intertekstualne, stosowanie oswojonych konwencji do wypełniania luk w narracjach (i w pamięci). Co istotne, robią to z wyraźną intencją budowania/ odzyskiwania pamięci i historii grup społecznych wykluczanych z tych obszarów we wcześniejszej kulturze dominującej.

One of the most predictable implications of photography consists of the ability to fix some images returning them in a variable timeframe for the observation. In all the major world cities, it is common to incur in some book where recent photos are compared to old ones searching the same point of view in order to make the comparison more accurate and stimulate the critical ability of the observer. An exercise that sometimes stimulates a sort of regret for the past, pointing out a diffused excess of nostalgia for times gone by. Nevertheless, the reality and meaning of modern city images are not always so prosaic. What happens when photographs are evocative of a reality that is completely lost in the collective imaginary even though it still exists and functions, despite being forgotten and buried in the depths of the city? This is the case of very few pictures capable of telling the story of a city, Milan, and its only “real” river, the Olona, whose waters, humiliated and rejected, continue to flow in total amnesia. It is a different story when photography does not have the role of nourishing nostalgia, but the power to make visible and explain the variation of a presence and its progressive obliteration. Some pictures testify to the passage from the bucolic amenity of the river and its banks in a pre-urban context to a muscular urban infrastructure. A rigid channelized river, shown with confidence, is trying to keep its presence, until the moment of its inevitable decline and disappearance. It is in these images that the possibility of reconsidering the Olona as a part of the new project for the city lies.

The study focuses on the question of the mediatized constitution of subject and subjectivity, which, surprisingly, has received little attention so far. The analytical reference to the mediatization approach enables a holistic understanding of subject, communication and media. Using the empirical example of the media (sub)culture of retro games, this article empirically examines the extent to which computer gamers are influenced by the spaces of experiences of games, not only in the moment of playing them, but also in the long term, with regard to their personal development and social community. The findings illustrate two dimensions of subjectivation processes: on the one hand, the reflective handling of computer games and thus subjectivation through games and game contexts, on the other hand, the nostalgic recollection of specific games and game contexts, which can be clearly separated analytically from the first dimension.

In the presented text I undertake the reflection on the forms of expressions of nostalgia in Bulat Okudzhava’s historical prose. His novel takes place in the first half of the nineteenth century, the times associated with the movement of the Decembrists. The writer really appreciated the Decembrists, but showed their era objectively or even critically because he saw the analogy between the past and his present.

Henry James was not a sentimental writer. However, in his later books we can find traces of repressed emotions and melancholy. One of the most intriguing literary documents showing the nostalgic strain in James is his collection The American Scene (1907), a record of the novelist’s return to the USA after a twenty-years-old absence. It contains various manifestations of James’s nostalgia – for example, his memories of New York and his melancholic recollections of the places connected with his youth. Also, it shows James’s convoluted rhetoric of memory as a space of repression and displacement as well as his unwillingness to address these issues in a direct fashion.

Technological rationality seeks to overcome the neutrality, or even strangeness, of the surrounding world by the appropriation of things, by which they obey man. The world ceases to be raw nature, and it appears to us as emanation, projection of human wishes and sensitivity. A special stress is laid here on technological and cybernetic values. They become values in themselves. All efforts are directed towards putting ambitious cybernetic plans into practice. Consequently, the quality of human life seems to lose its importance. This because, to paraphrase Kotarbiński’s idea, man has diverged the main road, the road of relatively simple things, and has entered the bog of basic problems. For the activity of technological rationality and for its effectiveness it seems indifferent whether the goal is worthy, or whether is contradicts any ethical sense. From now on all efforts and activity, which once determined means to an end, become the end itself in the era of cybernetic megamachine. This type of rationality rather seeks to be deprived of ethical signs, which could appease all sorrows and human frustrations.

In order to understand the endurance of memory of socialism, it is necessary to conduct an analysis of the beginning of the socialist thought in Poland. In the article, the mechanisms of socialism origin in early Stanislaw Brzozowski’s texts are reconstructed. The analysis has been conducted within the context of prospective nostalgia, the experience of modernity, and the history of ideas.

However, analyzing neopaganism through the prism of the classic postcolonial terms seems to be insufficient to the author. Therefore, he proposes to supplement it with the concept of nostalgia. In one of her many poetic motivation descriptions included in her literary works and comments, Amelia Rosselli points to tough-life experience as a factor influencing her artistic creativity. The Italian twentieth-century poet repeatedly emphasizes a direct impact of mental well-being as the driving force of her writing process. A gloomy flashback, hand in hand with a concept, experience, and fantasy, influence the expression of her pieces and structures the literary space. A minor overtoned reference to the grievous reality of Fascist Italy connected with the murder-for-hire of family members, sudden and premature death of her sweetheart and brother, mental illness in the context of the DNA memory, and, finally, the promise of suicide had all impacted noticeably upon the verses of her poems. Another thing worth mentioning is the issue of stress and hardships lived through by Amelia Rosselli’s mother and her immediate relatives just prior to the poet’s birth. According to the latest developments in medicine and cognitive sciences, any psychical damage influences bodily and mental functioning of persons not only directly affected by them, but also their descendants. The linguistic terms applied in the pieces of the Italian poet provoke a discussion of the phenomenon of post-memory. The term, which was proposed by Marianne Hirsch to refer to collective trauma inheritance, has been recently broadened by psychologists to encompass individual memory as well. The fragments written in four language codes (Italian, French, English, and music notation) offer hints to be used in the psycho-emotional analysis of the poet. Additionally, scrutinizing Amelia Rosselli’s nostalgic lyrical pieces, we can discern, by referring to psychological sciences, how the composition-making can constitute an auto-psychotherapy procedure. In terms of interdisciplinarity, the experience of melancholy and nostalgia in Amelia Rosselli’s artistic creativity covers the psychological, social, historical, cultural, political, and artistic areas.
