We present a systematic nonlinear procedure for designing microwave oscillators utilising a nonlinear PHEMT model, the negative resistance approach and the describing function concept. The procedure is applied in the design of a 24 GHz oscillator, which is then realised in hybrid technology. Measurement results show - 6% shift in the frequency but an acceptable agreement in the output power. A detailed analysis shows that the frequency shift arises mainly from inadequate CAD models in the K band, for the microstrip components employed in our design.

As an object of course control, the ship is characterised by a nonlinear function describing static manoeuvring characteristics that reflect the steady-state relation between the rudder deflection and the rate of turn of the hull. One of the methods which can be used for designing a nonlinear ship course controller is the backstepping method. It is used here for designing two configurations of nonlinear controllers, which are then applied to ship course control. The parameters of the obtained nonlinear control structures are tuned to optimise the operation of the control system. The optimisation is performed using genetic algorithms. The quality of operation of the designed control algorithms is checked in simulation tests performed on the mathematical model of a tanker. In order to obtain reference results to be used for comparison with those recorded for nonlinear controllers designed using the backstepping method, a control system with the PD controller is examined as well.

In a series of the recent papers of the author, it was shown that the solutions and Lagrange multipliers of state-constrained optimal control problems are locally Lipschitz continuous and directionally differentiable functions of the parameter, under usual constraint qualifications and weakened second order conditions. In this paper, it is shown that those conditions are not only sufficient, but also necessary. Thus, they consitute a characterization of Lipschitz stability and sensitivity properties for state-constrained optimal control problems.

We consider parabolic equations with nonlocal coefficients obtained from the Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equations with potentials. This class of equations includes the classical Debye system from electrochemistry as well as an evolution model of self-attracting clusters under friction and fluctuations. A study branch that mocks-up a population of network of swarms or agents with the ability to self-organise is Swarm intelligence. In spite of the huge amount of work that has been done in this area in both theoretically and empirically and the greater success that has been attained in several aspects, it is still ongoing and at its infant stage. An immune system, a cloud of bats, or a flock of birds are distinctive examples of a swarm system. In this study, two types of meta-heuristics algorithms based on population and swarm intelligence - Multi Swarm Optimization (MSO) and Bat algorithms (BA) – are set up to find optimal solutions of continuous non-linear optimisation models. In order to analyze and compare perfect solutions at the expense of performance of both algorithms, a chain of computational experiments on six generally used test functions for assessing the accuracy and the performance of algorithms, in swarm intelligence fields are used. Computational experiments show that MSO algorithm seems much superior to BA.

This paper describes a computationally efficient (sub-optimal) nonlinear predictive control algorithm. The algorithm uses a modified dual-mode approach which guarantees closed-loop stability. In order to reduce the computational burden, instead of online nonlinear optimisation used in the classical dual-mode control scheme, a nonlinear model of the plant is linearised on-line and a quadratic programming problem is solved. Calculation of the terminal set and implementation steps of the algorithm are detailed, especially for input-output models, which are widely used in practice.

Opis:
A wide variety of approaches for set-valued simulation, parameter identification, state estimation as well as reachability, observability and stability analysis for nonlinear discrete-time systems involve the propagation of ellipsoids via nonlinear functions. It is well known that the corresponding image sets usually possess a complex shape and may even be nonconvex despite the convexity of the input data. For that reason, domain splitting procedures are often employed which help to reduce the phenomenon of overestimation that can be traced back to the well-known dependency and wrapping effects of interval analysis. In this paper, we propose a simple, yet efficient scheme for simultaneously determining outer and inner ellipsoidal range enclosures of the solution for the evaluation of multi-dimensional functions if the input domains are themselves described by ellipsoids. The Hausdorff distance between the computed enclosure and the exact solution set reduces at least linearly when decreasing the size of the input domains. In addition to algebraic function evaluations, the proposed technique is-for the first time, to our knowledge-employed for quantifying worst-case errors when extended Kalman filter-like, linearization-based techniques are used for forecasting confidence ellipsoids in a stochastic setting.

The network calculus provides a theoretical background for description of traffic in computer networks. Using this tool in explanation of the so-called pathchirp method of measuring the available bandwidth, the validity and range of application of some relationships exploited are verified in this paper. The derivations are carried out in a wider context than that considered in a recent paper by Liebeherr et al. published in IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking on network bandwidth estimation, providing thereby new insights and outcomes. These results, summarized in a table, show a means of bounding the service curve, depending upon its convexity or non-convexity property assumed and upon the linearity or non-linearity of a network considered. Moreover, it is shown here that the nonlinear network example analyzed by Liebeherr et al. can be viewed equivalently as a linear parametric network. For this network, the behaviour of the cross traffic is considered in a more detail, too.

In this paper a control algorithm is presented for a nonlinear system defined by a nonlinear mapping F : R^n -> R^n of input states to output states of the system, for the problem of motion in the R^n space of output states along the given trajectory. The application of this algorithm in nonlinear optics is presented, for the control of light polarization transmitted through the Fabry-Perot resonator filled with a material with nonlinear optical properties. The calculated trajectory in the space of polarization states of output light leads to the phenomenon of optical bistability, i.e. sudden changes of output polarization induced by small variations of the input parameters, and the dependence of the current state of light polarization on the history of the system.

This paper presents an algorithm for nonlinear adaptive control of the viral load in HIV-1 infection. The infection model considered is a reduced complexity nonlinear state-space model with two state variables, that represent the plasma concentration of uninfected and infected CD4+ T-cells of the human immune system. The viral load is assumed to be proportional to the concentration of infected cells. First, a change of variables that exactly linearizes the system is obtained. For the resulting linear system the manipulated variable is obtained by state feedback. To compensate for the uncertainty in the infection parameter of the model an estimator based on a Control Lyapunov Function is designed.

The diagnosis of systems is one of the major steps in their control and its purpose is to determine the possible presence of dysfunctions, which affect the sensors and actuators associated with a system but also the internal components of the system itself. On the one hand, the diagnosis must therefore focus on the detection of a dysfunction and, on the other hand, on the physical localization of the dysfunction by specifying the component in a faulty situation, and then on its temporal localization. In this contribution, the emphasis is on the use of software redundancy applied to the detection of anomalies within the measurements collected in the system. The systems considered here are characterized by non-linear behaviours whose model is not known a priori. The proposed strategy therefore focuses on processing the data acquired on the system for which it is assumed that a healthy operating regime is known. Diagnostic procedures usually use this data corresponding to good operating regimes by comparing them with new situations that may contain faults. Our approach is fundamentally different in that the good functioning data allow us, by means of a non-linear prediction technique, to generate a lot of data that reflect all the faults under different excitation situations of the system. The database thus created characterizes the dysfunctions and then serves as a reference to be compared with real situations. This comparison, which then makes it possible to recognize the faulty situation, is based on a technique for evaluating the main angle between subspaces of system dysfunction situations. An important point of the discussion concerns the robustness and sensitivity of fault indicators. In particular, it is shown how, by non-linear combinations, it is possible to increase the size of these indicators in such a way as to facilitate the location of faults.

A discrete model is applied to handle the geometrically nonlinear free and forced vibrations of beams consisting of several different segments whose mechanical characteristics vary in the length direction and contain multiple point masses located at different positions. The beam is presented by an N degree of freedom system (N-Dof). An approach based on Hamilton's principle and spectral analysis is applied, leading to a nonlinear algebraic system. A change of basis from the displacement basis to the modal basis has been performed. The mechanical behavior of the N-Dof system is described in terms of the mass tensor mij, the linear stiffness tensor kij, and the nonlinear stiffness tensor bijkl. The nonlinear vibration frequencies as functions of the amplitude of the associated vibrations in the free and forced cases are predicted using the single mode approach. Once the formulation is established, several applications are considered in this study. Different parameters control the frequency-amplitude dependence curve: the laws that describe the variation of the mechanical properties along the beam length, the number of added masses, the magnitude of excitation force, and so on. Comparisons are made to show the reliability and applicability of this model to non-uniform and non-homogeneous beams in free and forced cases.

The present paper introduces a discrete physical model to approach the problem of nonlinear vibrations of cracked beams resting on elastic foundations. It consists of a beam made of several small bars, evenly spaced, connected by spiral springs, presenting the beam bending stiffness. The crack is modeled by a spiral spring with a reduced stiffness and the Winkler soil stiffness is modeled using linear vertical springs. Concentrated masses, presenting the inertia of the beam, are located at the bar ends. The nonlinear effect, due to the axial forces in the bars resulting from the change in their length, is presented by longitudinal springs. This model has the advantage of simplifying parametric studies, because of its discrete nature, allowing any modification in the mass and the stiffness matrices, and in the nonlinearity tensor, to be made separately. After establishing the model, various practical applications are performed without the need of going through all the formulation again. Numerical linear and nonlinear results are given, corresponding to a cracked simply supported beam.
