Opis:
Declining participation rates in social surveys stimulate research to better understand nonresponse mechanisms and their impact on related statistical inference. In this paper we focus on potential causal relationship between nonresponse and job finding in survey unemployment studies. Selected approaches are discussed from the perspective of counterfactual causality concept.

Opis:
The estimation of population parameters might be quite laborious and inefficient, when the sample data have missing values. In comparison follow-up visits, the method of imputation has been found to be a cheaper procedure from a cost point of view. In the present study, we can enhance the performance of imputation procedures by utilizing the raw moments of the auxiliary information rather than their ranks, especially, when the ranking of the auxiliary variable is expensive or difficult to do so. Equations for bias and mean squared error are obtained by large sample approximation. Through the numerical and simulation studies it can be easily understood that the proposed method of imputation can outperform their counterparts.

Opis:
Rationality of economic agents belongs to the basic assumptions of neoclassical economic theory, and for decades it has inspired research on whether expectations are indeed formed rationally. Direct data on expectations are available mainly through business tendency surveys which are subject to various types of non-response problems. Inclination of industrial enterprises to respond may be correlated with values of measured variable, introducing response bias. Response bias may also occur as a result of introducing weighting systems to control variable size of respondents. The two key properties of rational expectations, on which the majority of empirical analyses of survey data are focused, are unbiasedness and orthogonality. We analyze several sample balance statistics and expectations series based on quantified survey data, taking into consideration issues of non-response and weighting schemes. Alternative definitions of expectations series aim to account for: 1) influence of arbitrary assumptions concerning weighting of individual data, 2) changing sample structure that results from non-response, 3) response rates varying with degree of optimism / pessimism of respondents. Results of our analysis indicate that expectations concerning relative changes in production are unbiased but not efficient with respect to freely available information, namely, observed relative changes in production (lagged three months) and expectations balance (lagged two months). This result holds for a range of weighting schemes and non-response issues analyzed, including changes introduced to sample structure by non-response, and increased inclination of “optimists” and “pessimists” to supply answers in the business tendency survey, as long as their shares remain constant in time.

Opis:
High survey nonresponse in unemployment duration studies may have a strong effect on inference if  exit from unemployment affects the chance of nonresponse (nonresponse causality). In rotational studies  large part of the nonresponse results from panel attritions. A method to test the  presence of the causality mechanism for rotating panel designs is proposed and its asymptotic consistency is proved under the Cox regression model. An application to real labor data and a simulation study are shown.

Opis:
This paper considers the problem of estimating the product of two population means using the information on multi-auxiliary characters with double sampling the non-respondents. Classes of estimators are proposed for estimating P under two different situations [discussed by Rao (1986, 90)] using known population mean of multi-auxiliary characters. Further, this problem has been extended to the case when population means of the auxiliary characters are unknown and they are estimated on the basis of a larger first phase sample. In this situation, a class of two phase sampling estimators for estimating P is suggested using multi-auxiliary characters with unknown population means in the presence of non-response. The expressions of bias and mean square error of all the proposed estimators are derived and their properties are studied. An empirical study using real data sets is given to justify the theoretical considerations.

In real-world surveys, non-response and measurement errors are common, therefore studying them together seems rational. Some population mean estimators are modified and studied in the presence of non-response and measurement errors. Bias and mean squared error expressions are derived under different cases. For all estimators, a theoretical comparison is made with the sample mean per unit estimator. The Monte-Carlo simulation is used to present a detailed picture of all estimators' performance.

In this paper we have proposed a general class of estimators for two-phase sampling to estimate the population mean in the case when non-responses occur at the first phase. Furthermore, several continuous and categorical auxiliary variable(s) have been simultaneously used while constructing the class. Also, it is assumed that the information on all auxiliary variables is not available for population, which is often the case. The expressions of the mean square error of the suggested class have been derived and several special cases of the proposed class have been identified. The empirical study has also been conducted.

This work is designed to assess the effect of non-response in estimation of the current population mean in two-phase successive sampling on two occasions. Sub-sampling technique of non-respondents has been used and exponential methods of estimation under two-phase successive sampling arrangement have been proposed. Properties of the proposed estimation procedures have been examined. Empirical studies are carried out to justify the suggested estimation procedures and suitable recommendations have been made to the survey practitioners.
