Opis:
The main subject of the article is to show the changes that have taken place in the media, including the newspapers. The starting point is the title of the book by B. Poulet „La Fin des Journaux et l’avenir de l’information” („The End of Newspapers and the Future of Information”, 2011). This article presents the changes that have occurred in the printed newspaper, with special attention to the description of the components of the press release. The paper also focuses on the significance of the image and its interaction with the text and the issues associated with the return of iconic and visual culture. The traditional newspaper is compared with an electronic, on-line version of the newspaper in the context of presenting the information and its geneology. Furthermore, the paper shows the transformation of the information into infotainment.

This article shows the results of narrative interviews and the analysis of the phenomenon diffusion of responsibility. Since China’s environmental policy is defined as top-down “authoritarian environmentalism”, political propaganda and media censorship heavily affect the communication of climate change. Hence, conducting an investigation of climate change communication in the context of China is a valuable exercise. This article uses Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to investigate how the Chinese Press reported on, and discursively constructed climate change through the employment of a series of discursive strategies, over a 20-year period, 2000-2020. The findings indicate that news reporting on climate change was in consistent alignment with the ruling Communist Party’s environmental policies during these two decades, facilitating the consolidation of the government’s hegemony.

Achieved in recent years the sales of national dailies shows that publishers must constantly compete within daily newspapers market, as well as they need to take actions that will be the answer to substitute products, especially television and the Internet. This leads to the blurring of the boundaries between the media - leading to their convergence. Media convergence forces press publishers strategies , not only in their development, but also to survive in a competitive market. The present article suggests a pragmatic-funcional approach to analyse diminutive and augmentative derivatives in Spanish newspapers ABC, El Mundo and El País. More specifically, the focus of interest is on studying their connotative meanings (emotional and expressive). Special attention is paid to the syncretic meaning of the investigated derivatives according to the context in which they appear. The polysemic character of diminutives and augmentatives constitutes a problem when it is necessary to identify their true meaning. In this case, linguistic and extralinguistic factors (social and cultural) should be considered.

Press journalism does not exist without a newspaper, but a newspaper does not consti-tute the whole press journalism. From this perspective, the issue of press genres is not important. Genology does not transcend the world of the press. However, anthropologi-cal reflection on press journalism concerns thoughts on experience, which is something more than an article in a newspaper. In anthropology, we talk about two methods of cognition – emic and etic. In my article, I consider the opportunities and limitations of this conception in relation with press journalism by substituting genology for a search of the subject’s experience.

The first edition of “Wiadomości Górnośląskie” appeared on March 20, 1990 in the form of a Polish-German supplement to “Trybuna Opolska”. This was a starting point of the published up till now German minority newspaper – “Wochenblat.pl”. Due to that, we may treat “Wiadomości Górnośląskie” as one of the oldest press publications of the German minority in Poland after 1989. When we focus on the German texts published in “WG”, we may come across many lexical and grammatical mistakes, which make it difficult for the reader to understand the text. It is not only the mistakes that disrupt the reception of the text. This article, by means of describing the relation and the influence the typography and the reading process have on one another, indicates that micro-typographic mistakes may have a negative impact on the clarity of the text. Only when the text is properly set, can the reader focus on its message. Wrongly set words, incorrect punctuation or spaces draw the reader’s attention and cause reading difficulties. They force the reader to analyze the structure of the text and therefore draw them away from focusing on the message. The article, using particular examples taken from the corpus of ten first editions of the “Wiadomości Górnośląskie”, shows that violation of the ortotypographic rules may disturb the clarity of the text. At the same time, it is being stated that typography has an important influence as far as the clarity of the text is concerned.

Opis:
Aim. The article discusses the status of the Greek Catholic Church from 1948 to 1950. It also presents how this period was presented through media. Since it is possible to investigate this aspect within the framework of a comparison of several media channels, we have decided to introduce the comparison through the perspective of the daily-newspaper Rudé právo. Methods. The findings of our research study are based on the data collected from archival and documentary sources, as well as professional studies and monographs related to the above-mentioned topic. Results. Based on our research topic, we can understand how the attitude towards the Greek Catholic Church changed after the events of February 1948 and what impact the change of regime had on its functioning. Regarding media, we can observe how the pressure on the Greek Catholic Church changed in relation to the regime change and individual historical events, and how the media expressed its opinion on the Church. Conclusion. Media is not only a source of information for people, but it also creates public opinion, and therefore, it was extremely important to control this state apparatus in the past. We must understand that availability of information in the 1950s and today is significantly different. Catholic periodicals were almost non-existent and thus, people often received misleading or false information. Through our research, which is presented in the tabular presentation of data, we can discover the increasing pressure against the Church, and the response of the public to the Church.

The purpose of this paper was to assess the evolution of sports coverage regarding gender in online newspapers in two western societies Spain and the United States, in a period of ten years (2004 vs. 2014). A total of 2,951 articles with athletic content from the online newspapers usatoday.com and elmundo.es were analyzed. The variables registered were gender, placement in the newspaper, word count, inclusion of photographs, and the sports disciplines. The results show a significant reduction in sports articles in the two online newspapers for both genders. This reduction resulted in a decrease in the variability of sports articles. Further, there was a significant imbalance in sports news between the two genders. There was a significant reduction in the proportion of sports articles in both online newspapers for women, significantly reducing the accessibility of articles about women’s sports. The gender imbalance was higher in the Spanish newspaper than in the U.S. newspaper. The gender imbalance was higher in the Spanish newspaper than in the U.S. newspaper. Both online newspapers showed an image of sport that is male-orientated, focused on elite-level sport and with an overall low number of sport disciplines.

In the 1930s, Latvia was one of the main target countries for economic emigration from Poland. Emigration to Latvia was seasonal. Between 1936 and 1939, each year about 40,000 Polish agricultural workers were employed in Latvian agriculture. Polish seasonal migration was the object of attention of the contemporary press, both Polish and foreign. A very valuable source of knowledge about Polish seasonal migration is the newspaper Nasze Życie (Our Life). This applies especially to various aspects of Polish migrants’ everyday life. It was the only Polish newspaper in Latvia (it was published in Riga). From 1936, the newspaper had a special section devoted to seasonal workers. It contained information and messages addressed to the migrants. The editorial team’s task was to provide the workers with comprehensive and reliable help. In this regard, advice and guidance was given on the organisation of workers’ lives and work. These advices were difficult to overestimate. The newspaper also covered religious and moral topics. At the same time, the newspaper was the main link between the workers and the Polish consular service. It published messages of the Polish Consulate in Riga. Unfortunately, the weekly reached few seasonal migrants. Most workers did not read or subscribe to the newspaper for various reasons. The article analyses the content of the newspaper Nasze Życie. The author confronted the content of the newspaper with other available sources regarding the issues of Polish seasonal migration in Latvia.

W świetle publicystyki na łamach prasy ruchu ludowego proces dochodzenia kobiet do aktywnej roli w polityce i walce o swoje prawa prowadził poprzez oświatę oraz aktywność na różnych polach życia społecznego: w samorządach, organizacjach spółdzielczych, które niewątpliwie przyczyniały się do kształtowania i rozwoju cywilizacyjnego wsi. Publicystyka na łamach „Piasta”, „Gazety Kobiecej”, „Wyzwolenia” czy „Gazety Chłopskiej” oddziaływała wychowawczo na czytelników. Podtrzymywano wizerunek kobiety ciężko pracującej, kochającej matki, odpowiedzialnej za wychowanie dzieci. Propagowano pożądane wzorce dobrej gospodyni ogniska domowego, żony, katoliczki a także kobiety złaknionej wiedzy. Autorzy publikujący na łamach prasy ludowej artykuły skierowane do kobiet nie omijali tematyki trudnej związanej z przeciwnościami ich życia codziennego. Przyczyny zainteresowania kobietami były różne. Po pierwsze decydowała o nim liczebność kobiet w warstwie chłopskiej, po drugie kształtujące się wówczas w myśli politycznej ruchu ludowego koncepcje agraryzmu, po trzecie obawy przed objęciem warstwy chłopskiej wpływami rozwijającego się ruchu narodowego i socjalistycznego.
In the newspapers of the people's movement, the process of bringing women into active roles in politics and fighting for their rights has led through education and activity in various fields of social life: in self-governments, cooperative organizations, which undoubtedly contributed to the shaping and development of civilization. Journalism in the pages of “Piast”, “Gazety Kobiecej”, “Wyzwolenie” or “Gazeta Chłopska” affected the educational readers. Maintained image of a woman hard-working, loving mother, responsible for the education of children. The desired models of good housewives, their wives, Catholics and women of knowledge were promoted. Authors publishing in the press of folk articles aimed at women not avoided difficult issues related to the adversities of everyday life. The reasons for women's interest were different. First, it was decided by the number of women in the peasantry, secondly by the ideas of agrarianism in the political movement of the people's movement, and by the fear of peasantry being influenced by the growing national and socialist movement.

This brief information provides a description of a retrospective online database of newspapers, daily publications and official bulletins and publications available at Poznań University Library. The database of newspapers published in the Polish language encompasses publications from the interwar period, i.e. the years 1918-1939. The list has been prepared from personal inspection.

In the present paper we analyze the relation between political competence and media exposure. Taking into account the dynamic transition of media environment related to growing impact of the internet (web 2.0) we made several assumptions about the influence of traditional and new media on political sophistication. We hypothesize that the impact of the media on political competence is related to qualitative, rather than quantitative factors; competence rises with the way a media consumer interacts with the medium, rather than on the amount of time spent with the medium. The empirical analysis based on a mass public opinion survey confirms our assumptions: there is a positive relationship between media exposure and political competence, however various kind of media differ as far as their influence is concerned. Moreover the use of interactive internet features (participation in information exchange) is a key factor shaping competence.

News coverage has a major impact on the interpretation of news events and the response towards these events by public and policy makers. The study intended to investigate the extent of children's rights representation in newspapers in Pakistan. The aim was to determine the coverage, type of the News and level of placement in four selected newspapers (Dawn, The Express Tribune, Jang, and Nawa-i-waqt). A content analysis of 316 news editions of selected samples was conducted over the duration of one year (November 2017 to October 2018). The purpose of content analysis is to provide advocates with a comprehensive basis for how children’s problems are presented in the news. A systematic sampling technique is used for the collection of data. The Nawa-i-waqt newspaper covered the maximum news stories (792 in number) as compared to the other dailies. Furthermore, most of the stories about children were found on the inside pages of newspapers which shows that children’s issues received minimal coverage. This paper argues that the press should take more responsibility by adequately informing children and making them aware, so that the attention of the government and the public can be aimed at tackling child problems in society.

This text analyses the Homek magazine published by Ruch Społeczeństwa Alternatywnego (RSA) [Alternative Society Movement] – a community of people with neoanarchist views first co-creating the underground Solidarność and later functioning independently. Homek, as an underground newspaper, was initially published bi-weekly, then monthly and later irregularly. This article focuses on, firstly, the RSA community’s position on hostile attitudes (including the so-called hate speech) and, secondly, on the use of the term walka [fight] as what we believe to have been a self-creation device.

In modern Russian, word blends can be found in fiction, journalism, advertising, as well as in scientific terminology and in everyday language. This study presents the press titles of the daily “Коммерсанть” (from 2020 and 40 issues from 2021; online version) in which lexical blends were used. Structural analysis shows that the dominant role in their construction is played by haplologic blends and blends based on tmesis (“matryoshka” words and quasi-tmesis words). An interesting procedure is the simultaneous transformation of precedent texts (substitution) and the use of word blends. Noun derivatives are most frequently represented in the entire illustrative material. Next to them we also find adjective, verb and adverb blends.

The article analyses the representation of the newspaper medium in The Unfortunates – the fourth novel by the post-war British avant-garde author B.S. Johnson. The narrator’s job as a football reporter is discussed with reference to other themes and the unconventional form of the novel. Special attention is paid to the section called “The pitch worn”, which presents the process of writing the report. The aim is to see how the chapter resonates within the whole work and what it reveals as regards Johnson’s views on precision, honesty and liveness. Literary analysis is accompanied by references to journalism and media studies.

Pragmatic set phrases (pragmatic phrasemes) are also called communicative routine formulas. They have been given particular attention by research in the field of conversational analysis and foreign language teaching, but they are also a research subject in phraseology, though on the periphery of the discipline. Pragmatic set phrases are mainly used in oral communication, but they also appear quite often in newspaper texts, where there is a preference for certain classes of set phrases. This paper deals with problems in the classification of pragmatic set phrases which appear in commentary texts of different types of German newspapers. The material for the investigation is taken from the recently compiled Helsinki Commentary Corpus.

To recall the history of education, for example in the period of the Second Polish Republic, it is necessary to resort to many sources. One of them, extremely important, are newspapers, which help to reconstruct discussion about some essential issues in a given period. Głos Szkoły i Rodziny periodical was issued in Płock in the years 1925-1926. The periodical was meant as a space for discussions and exchange of experiences about the family and school cooperation. While this aim may not have been reached, the newspaper is an interesting record of the history of education between 1918 and 1939, especially on the topic of the influence of the family home on school and vice versa.
