Opis:
This study examines the framing of the social movement in Iran launched on 29 December 2017, by analyzing the news texts of six national Turkish newspapers. It discusses the movement in the context of news framing, focusing on problem definition, causal interpretation, moral evaluation, and treatment recommendation. The findings suggest that each newspaper has reported the social movement in Iran quite differently. The most obvious difference is that the left-wing, anti-government press mainly explained the events in terms of political, economic, and social factors while the right-wing, pro-government press attributed the events to ‘foreign forces’ and reflected the dominant discourse of political power while framing the news. Thus, the way Turkish newspapers frame a social movement outside the country reveals the intense polarization in the Turkish press.

Opis:
A framework for applying agenda-setting theory in an international news context is proposed. First-level agenda-setting would suggest that the more news coverage a nation receives, the more that nation will be viewed as being critically important to readers. Second-level agenda-setting meanwhile would suggest that the nature of the coverage, both attributes linked to a country and the tone of the coverage, would impact whether readers view the nation positively or negatively. The framework is employed through a content analysis of international news coverage in two Slovakian newspapers. The analysis shows the usefulness of the approach.

This paper examines the characteristics of news translation during wars and conflicts. There is limited research available concerning the issues of English-Arabic news translation, especially during conflicts. Based on an analysis of 11 CNN news headlines and Al-Jazeera parallel translations during the 2003 Iraq War, this study discusses the mechanics of news translation and interpretation and the strategies and challenges involved. Particularly, the paper explores news translation in the context of global information flows across the boundaries of space, language and culture. Building on existing research on news translation, and employing critical discourse and framing analyses, the study shows how news coverage of the Iraq War was framed to serve the competing narratives of war chroniclers as active participants in the conflict.

Opis:
Similar to Poland, Ukraine started itsmedia reform in early 90-s. However, different from Poland, media in Ukraine still did not become a true mediator between the authorities, the politicians and the society. This paper is a part of a bigger study 1 which purpose was to compare news framing in Polish and Ukrainian press in 2003 from the perspective of its possible impact on people’s engagement in public life. I traced the use of two news frames having a distinguished positive or negative impact on involvement, the attribution of responsibility and the powerlessness frame, in Ukrainian and Polish quality newspapers [Den’ and Dzerkalo Tyznia, Gazeta Wyborcza, Rzeczpospolita]. The paper concentrates on the Ukrainian media and analyses framing in the Ukrainian news. The results of the study presented here show that Polish newspapers more often enable citizens to participate in political decisions by critically scrutinizing the performance of their elected representatives in office. Different from them, Ukrainian news serve rather for concealment of the responsible policy-makers from public scrutiny, blurring the picture of political life and voicing public frustration with problems, which only contributes to the reproduction of people’s helplessness and passivity in public life.

The paper is devoted to tickers concerning the strikes of transport employees in France. The analysis of the choice of words which were used to describe various aspects of the events in four TV channels proves that after familiarising oneself with a short announcement of a particular piece of reporter’s material, the same facts could be interpreted in different ways, depending on the author. This function of tickers is additionally strengthened by the use of stylistic devices, especially metaphors. Investigating the corpora has also revealed that one of the channels has consciously created a coherent message and selected particular keyewords.
Artykuł poświęcony został paskom tytułującym informacje telewizyjne dotyczące strajków pracowników transportu we Francji.

Opis:
The role of the media in polarizing the debate on immigration has been subject to a growing amount of research; yet little is known about whether and how online comment sections related to news articles on immigration reshape the journalistic narrative. This study examines readers’ reactions to the media coverage by employing a quantitative content analysis of over 6,000 users’ comments responding to 128 online news articles on immigration. It concludes that generally the discussants’ perspective does not differ significantly from the medium’s framing of the issue with one important exception: the human rights frame accentuated by the medium is strictly refused by the discussants. The discussants also bring the economic and cultural aspects of immigration into the debate. The article thus contributes to a more general understanding of the role the users’ discussions play in shaping the debates on controversial political issues.

Opis:
The present case study in general and the multimodal analysis of the warfare metaphor in particular tend to focus on the prevalence of metaphor framing related to news schemas documented over the period of the forty-four days of an actual war - the 2020 Nagorno-Karabagh war. Certain questions (Why was the warfare metaphor so widely used in this forty-four day war? How and in what ways did this type of metaphor realize its functional aims?) are addressed in the present case study by analyzing theoretical and empirical data on the subject and by advancing my own account of the functions of the warfare metaphor in war discourse presented in mass-mediated communication. Metaphor framing and its effects usually depend on words (the linguistic or verbal metaphor), however, such effect also depend on multimodal representations of the verbal metaphor, namely on the visual image. I therefore argue that metaphor framing and metaphor effects should be examined and explicitly described within the frames of multimodal analysis which can disclose how the convergence of verbal and the visual metaphor affects rhetorical war situations and increases the audience’s reception of the message of the war. Hence, this case study will show that the wartime metaphor, with the application of multimodality, conveys information of the war and impacts public opinion, thus striving to achieve positive outcomes. The results show that metaphor framing and the given type of metaphor is encountered in actual war to draw and capture public attention through emotionally charged multimodal devices aimed at informing and impacting public opinion, thus persuading and motivating the world to take urgent steps to stop the further escalation of the conflict. The usage of such metaphor framing closely connected with the context of war might result in certain outcomes illuminating that the warfare metaphor contributes to the understanding of complexities and abstractions of war discourse at large.

India and the European Union (EU) have long been touted as natural partners, yet despite their apparent commonalities, political relations between the two global powers have lost momentum. The impasse reached in negotiations towards an EU–India Free-Trade Agreement (BTIA), and niggling bilateral disputes are indicative of the current state of affairs. Therefore the EU is for India a relatively insignificant partner, which is reflected in the way the EU is presented in the Indian media. Although occasionally portrayed in a negative way, the EU is on the whole treated with indifference by the Indian online news media, receiving minimal coverage. France, Germany and the United Kingdom (UK) are far more visible in the Indian media, unsurprisingly as close bilateral ties with these three EU Member States is central to the Government of India’s strategy in Europe. A shortage of understanding about the EU and a lack of profile gained by EU leadership in India are identified as main causes for the current indifference felt towards the EU in India. High level engagement is identified as being the most effective way to increase the EU’s profile and perception in India, with the EU–India summit expected in the first half of 2016, offering leaders a perfect platform.

The article presents a critical discourse analysis of media coverage of the most important Lithuanian strategic object - the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant INPP - in the three biggest news portals. Media news focuses mostly on certain aspects of decommissioning of the INPP management issues and the transparency of financing mechanisms. Environmental and social aspects of the decommissioning are not sufficiently disclosed and discussed. The community of Visaginas the satellite town for the workers of the INPP remains an invisible and silent actor of the discourse. In the media news portals, the town is portrayed as disconnected from the INPP. This divide could be explained by assuming that after the closure of the INPP as a major feeding enterprise the town must search for a re-definition of its identity and construct this identity without nuclear energy and without the INPP. On the other hand, such a divide reflects a common trend characteristic of the entire nuclear discourse - to disempower communities and the public, create a boundary between the industry and the public, between the experts and ordinary citizens.
