In recent years, rhetorical scholars have turned to study the materiality of rhetoric as well as the rhetoricity of material, often introducing a posthumanist or anti-anthropocentric stance rejecting mind-body dualism(s), while often also turning to affirmative frameworks as an alternative to criticism. Introducing the Nordic Waste scandal in Denmark in 2023, we point to the risk of toxically affirming the perspective of environmentally harmful corporations in rhetoric centering materiality and affirmation.
W ostatnich latach badacze retoryki zwrócili się ku badaniu materialności retoryki, a także retoryczności materii, często wprowadzając posthumanistyczne lub antyantropocentryczne stanowisko odrzucające dualizm (dualizmy) umysł-ciało, a także zwracając się ku ramom afirmatywnym jako alternatywie dla krytyki. Przedstawiając skandal Nordic Waste w Danii w 2023 r., w artykule wskazano na ryzyko toksycznego powielania perspektyw promowanych przez korporacje szkodzące środowisku w obrębie retoryki skupiającej się na materialności i afirmacji.

Artykuł jest próbą wypracowania w ramach dyskursu teatrologicznego postawy i metody badawczej rezonującej z przemianą, która zaczęła się w teatrze pod wpływem ruchu #MeToo i dyskusji o przemocy w szkołach teatralnych, w procesach twórczych i w teatrach. Punktem wyjścia refleksji jest spostrzeżenie, że w najnowszych spektaklach tematyzujących przemoc seksualną w teatrze widać proces przejścia od skargi na nadużycia władzy do konstruktywnych, wychylonych w przyszłość propozycji zmiany. Podstawą tego procesu jest świadomość usytuowania osób tworzących w panujących w teatrze układach władzy oraz gotowość brania pod uwagę rozmaitych konsekwencji tego usytuowania. Zaproponowany w artykule projekt odpowiedzialnie usytuowanej krytyki afirmatywnej rozumianej jako postawa badawczo-pisarska opiera się na koncepcjach wiedz usytuowanych Donny Haraway, humanistyki afirmatywnej Ewy Domańskiej, etyki posthumanistycznej (w ujęciu Karen Barad oraz Moniki Rogowskiej-Stangret) oraz krytyki afirmatywnej Harry’ego Lehmanna. Analiza dyskusji o coming outach dotyczących Ośrodka Praktyk Teatralnych „Gardzienice” stanowi studium przypadku, które ma pomóc dookreślić możliwości zmiany dyskursu na temat narzędzi i etyki badań teatralnych.
This article seeks to develop within the theater studies discourse a research stance and method that would resonate with the transformation that has begun in theater in connection with the #MeToo movement and the discussion about violence in theater schools, creative processes, and theaters. The author’s point of departure is the observation that recent productions thematizing sexual violence in theater have been gradually turning from grievances against the abuse of power towards constructive, forward-leaning proposals for change. This process is founded on the awareness that theater makers are situated within the present systems of power and on the willingness to consider various implications of this situatedness. The proposed project of responsibly situated affirmative criticism, understood as a research-and-writing stance, is based on Donna Haraway’s concepts of situated knowledges, Ewa Domańska’s affirmative humanities, posthumanist ethics (as envisaged by Karen Barad and Monika Rogowska-Stangret), and Harry Lehmann’s affirmative criticism. The article offers an analysis of the discussion about comings-out concerning the “Gardzienice” Center for Theater Practices, as a case study aimed at a more precise delineation of the possibilities for changing the discourse on the instruments and ethics of theater research.

Zygmunt Mycielski w roku 1975 opublikował recenzję tomu Muzyka XX wieku Bogusława Schaeffera pod nawiązującym do znanych sporów z historii muzyki tytułem Antyschaefferyzm. Zwrot ten oznaczał dla Mycielskiego jego własną, indywidualną postawę sprzeciwu wobec sposobu Schaefferowskiego myślenia o muzyce, a zwłaszcza trybu wartościowania muzyki XX wieku. Formułę tę po latach można wykorzystać do opisu szerszego niż jednostkowy, historycznego już zjawiska związanego z krytycznym odzewem na twórczość zmarłego w 2019 roku kompozytora, krytyka, grafika i dramaturga. Antyschaefferyzm w okresie jego najintensywniejszej działalności pisarskiej dokumentują całkiem liczne polemiki, dyskusje, kontrowersje, a czasem nawet dość gwałtowna repulsja światopoglądu estetycznego autora Małego informatora muzyki XX wieku. Ich geneza wynikała już z samego charakteru Schaefferowskich sformułowań – radykalności i arbitralności, polemicznego zacięcia i odosobnienia prezentowanego stanowiska w środowiskowych dyskusjach. Prowokacje Schaeffera przeważnie nie pozostawały bez odpowiedzi, budząc gwałtowne, spolaryzowane reakcje, dlatego jego myśl bardzo często stawała się punktem odniesienia w dyskusjach toczonych na temat muzyki współczesnej. Głównym przedmiotem artykułu jest więc kwestia swoistego negatywnego rezonansu – krytycznego postrzegania koncepcji teoretycznych i estetycznych Schaeffera oraz jego działalności jako krytyka i publicysty muzycznego. Spojrzenie na twórczą aktywność Schaeffera w taki zapośredniczony sposób sprawia, że to stanowiska i myśli jego wybranych krytyków stanowią zasadniczy przedmiot refleksji. Kluczowi polemiści to Zygmunt Mycielski i Stefan Kisielewski. Ich głosy uzupełniają krytyki autorstwa Mieczysława Tomaszewskiego, Tadeusza Andrzeja Zielińskiego, Krzysztofa Meyera oraz Leszka Polonego. Nieco bardziej złożony i dynamiczny, wobec czego osobny przykład stanowi postawa Bohdana Pocieja.
In 1975 Zygmunt Mycielski published a review of Bogusław Schaeffer’s book Muzyka XX wieku (Twentieth-century music), entitled ‘Antyschaefferyzm’ (Anti-Schaefferism), referring to well-known disputes from music history. Mycielski used this title to express his own individual opposition to Schaeffer’s way of thinking about music, and especially the way he passed judgment on twentieth-century music. In retrospect, however, the term can now be applied to a wider historical phenomenon of critical reactions to the output of that composer, critic, graphic artist and playwright, who died in 2019. During the period of Schaeffer’s most intense activity as a writer, anti-Schaefferism was reflected in a substantial number of polemics, debates and controversies, and even at times quite violent rejections of Schaeffer’s aesthetic views. Such reactions resulted from the radical and arbitrary nature of Schaeffer’s claims, his polemical passion, and the fact that his standpoint was isolated in professional circles. In most cases, Schaeffer’s provocations drew fierce, polarised reactions, which meant that his ideas very frequently became a point of reference in debates on contemporary music. Hence this article deals mainly with the critical appraisal of Schaeffer’s theoretical and aesthetic concepts (their negative resonance), as well as his work as a critic and writer on music. Schaeffer’s creative output is presented here in a mediated manner, through the lens of selected critics’ standpoints and comments. His main polemicists were Zygmunt Mycielski and Stefan Kisielewski. Their statements are complemented by the critical commentaries of Mieczysław Tomaszewski, Tadeusz Andrzej Zieliński, Krzysztof Meyer and Leszek Polony. The attitude of Bohdan Pociej stands out as more complex and dynamic.

This polemical paper discusses the views of Markus Vinzent presented in his book Marcion and the Dating of the Synoptic Gospels. Its author aimed to study interdependencies between the synoptic gospels and the text used by Marcion. This led him to a claim that all canonical gospels rely on Marcion, who is even supposed to have invented the literary genre of gospel. Inasmuch as the author of this paper agrees that the dependencies between The Gospel of Marcion and the synoptic gospels need to be comprehensively studied, he does not follow Vinzent’s theses and methodological approach. The paper’s author emphasizes the necessity of the use of lexical and narratological analyses and suggests that (even at the current state of studies) they can point towards one of the variants of the multi-source hypothesis.
Artykuł stanowi polemikę z poglądami Markusa Vinzenta zaprezentowanymi w publikacji Marcion and the Dating of the Synoptic Gospels. Badacz ten stawiał sobie za cel zbadanie zależności ewangelii synoptycznych od tekstu, którym posługiwał się Marcjon, a w konsekwencji postawił tezę, iż wszystkie ewangelie kanoniczne pozostają pod bezpośrednim wpływem Marcjona jako twórcy gatunku literackiego ewangelii. W opinii autora niniejszej polemiki samo podjęcie wątku zależności między wspomnianymi tekstami jest istotnym przedsięwzięciem, niemniej zaproponowane przez Vinzenta wyniki, jak również sama metodologia badań, budzą znaczne wątpliwości, które nie pozwalają przychylić się do proponowanej w omawianej książce tezy. Autor wskazuje na niezbędną konieczność zbadania niniejszego problemu przy wykorzystaniu analiz leksykalnych i narratologicznych, sugerując przy tym, że mogą one już na obecnym etapie wskazywać na zasadność któregoś z wariantów hipotezy wielu źródeł.

A little writing not enough researched and reaching a few pages belonging to Vasile Alecsandri proves the keen interest of a comedies and vaudeville author for language issues, especially for the building of a beautiful and fluent literary language. From our point of view, of a today's researcher, it is the only work published towards the end of the 19th century (approx. 1876), which includes in the title the term of grotesque with certain connotations, unusual for the Romanian cultural space. Through an analysis sourcing in the New Criticism, we will show the links, avant la lettre, with the aesthetics of the grotesque in the Romanian space and the intuitions of a writer, considered “easy”, although a classic of Romanian literature.

The article addresses the scholarly aim of philological investigations and their social function. The author considers the critical evaluation of worldwide philological practice, questioning some paradigms of thinking about philology and promoting its definition as an effort to understand the other by accepting and respecting the uniqueness of text.   The article is part of the research project entitled “Redefining Philology” (Contract No. 0031/NPRH2/H11/81/2012).

Compiling special dictionaries in Ukraine and Russia has its own history, national specifics, significant achievements and groundworks. Terminological dictionaries play an important role – they preserve and transmit the scientific terminology fund from generation to generation, which necessitates a critical examination of each specific publication. Terminographic criticism is an integral, interdisciplinary direction which is formed simultaneously on the basis of scientific criticism and scientific communication combining their features. As a result of the study, it was established that modern Ukrainian and Russian critics in their reviews adhere to the same principles to examine terminological dictionaries: the intention to comprehensively analyse, first of all, definition and translation publications as well as reference dictionaries, regarding the representation of their mega-, macro- and microstructure parameters; determining the national and linguacultural values of branch dictionaries. The potential importance of the practical application of the results lies in improving the theoretical and methodological principles and foundations of compiling terminological dictionaries, as well as their use in the development of new models of special publications, in particular dictionaries of a new type, which will comprehensively present the terminology of a certain field of science.

The purpose of the paper is to draw attention to the problem of the division of socio-political life on the right and left and the doctrinal assumptions of the new right and the new left, which are then expressed in social and political programs. The object of these analyzes, however, are not specific political groups or their forms of activity, but only ideological assumptions of social movements. The paper has three parts: 1) it points out that there is no clear criterion for division into right and left, and the use of these terms is polarizing and is conditioned historically, culturally and geographically; 2) the main principles of the new right are presented (economic liberalism, conservatism, minimal state and government, free market, anti-egalitarianism); 3) the ideas of the new left wing were shown (new man, counterculture, criticism, egalitarianism, emancipation, ecology, pacifism).

The article discusses the book by Wojciech Browarny Historie odzyskane. Literackie dziedzictwo Wrocławia i Dolnego Śląska [Rescued Stories: Literary Heritage of Wrocław and Upper Silesia]. The author of the article presents the concept of “rescuing” the forgotten local history by the writers and scholars based inWrocław and Upper Silesia. The region regains its cultural importance, and the literature becomes a tool in building regional identity. The article demonstrates that the book is not confined to performing a regional function but is also important in a number of ways. It concerns the heritage of Upper Silesia, which is part of the region and Central Europe. It also belongs to contemporary literary criticism and the recent socially engaged humanities.

The author proposes a reflection on discovering the poet with regard to his creation or construction. This issue is discussed on the example of Emily Dickinson’s works which were published only after her death and were not prepared for print by the author herself. In the light of the latest research on the material dimension of her legacy (starting from Virginia Jackson’s study Dickinson’s Misery: A Theory of Lyric Reading from 2005 to the recently published collection The Gorgeous Nothings. Emily Dickinson’s Envelope Poems), it appears that many of Dickinson’s works were not written in a form that could be recognized as poetic at first glance. A large part was preserved only in notebooks, loose sheets covered with handwriting written in continuo or at odd angles, in a manner adapted to the format of a given scrap of paper, usually a free fragment of a recycled envelope or a torn-off corner of a piece of paper used previously for a different purpose. These texts had to be recognized then by discoverers as poems, and then copied and edited in a way consistent with what was considered lyric poetry in the era. Some of them were then rejected as not falling into the category of poetry and included in the opus of the American only by later researchers. Others, in the first editions treated as poems with time were excluded by historians of literature from this collection. Contrary to the provocative title, the aim of the article is not to answer the question about the status of the texts left by Dickinson. Instead, the author reflects on the poetic criteria ascribed to her works by the first and subsequent readers.

The quarterly “Tematy”, edited by Paweł Mayewski, was published in the years 1961–1969. In 32 issues the editors published reprints of essayistic texts from elite American magazines, presenting works in the field of sociology, political science and literary criticism. There were also many translations poems of the greatest contemporary American poets. The eminent professors of American universities, as well as many Polish emigre writers, cooperated with Mayewski. Those appeared mainly in the role of translators. Mayewski’s magazine was part of the ideological offensive against communism and the place of presentation of the complex image of American society in the times of the Black people’s struggle for equality, student rebellion against the establishment, counterculture successes and at the same time the triumph of the consumerist model of society. All these issues as well as disputes among American intellectuals about the place of literature in the modern society found expression in the Mayewski’s quaterly. The sixties were a period of exhaustion of the potential of the New Critics’ school and the search for new ways of interpreting literary works. Also in this dimension, the quarterly addressed to the Polish reader has become a place for the presentation of new ideas.

The paper is an attempt to analyse Barbara Klicka’s book of poetry nice, written in 2015. The interpretation is focused mainly on forms, which oscillate between prose poem and free verse. It also examines genological issues and shows main topics of presented literature, such as a revision of traditional aesthetic with an important turn into anaesthetic and its political and ethical contexts, or – in connection with philosophical, theological and social changes in the Western thought – the problem of postmodern subjectivity.

For Bobkowski, to maintain personal freedom based on material independence achieved through his own work was a fundamental existential issue. Freedom and financial independence were: a declaration, a life’s motto and an economic programme. The writer’s concept was, eventually, reduced to a change of his status as a political exile to the situation of an economic migrant who also supported Poland’s freedom.

It is in such a context that the author is able to shed light upon the special status of such forms of contemporary literary criticism that do not attempt to change paradigms, but rather are organized by gestures of corrections and reconfiguration. Postulating the “return of close reading,” the author departs from the basic tenets of New Criticism to illustrate some of the more recent concepts of what close reading is today and how they affect the interpretation of contemporary works of literature and, by extension, texts of culture.
