This article presents a short analysis of two concepts – NEUROSIS and DISEASE1 – as used in the context of cognitive-behavioural psychotherapy carried out with two different patients. Drawing upon notions developed in Relevance Theory (Sperber and Wilson [1986] 1995), the analysis aims to provide conclusions useful to psychotherapeutic practice. The underlying proposal is that the psychotherapist’s awareness of the relevance-based features of concepts can help contribute to positive therapeutic results through the accomplishment of self-disclosure, transparency of meaning and emotional communication (Pawelczyk 2010, 62). Moreover, the analysis of the meaning of the concepts NEUROSIS and DISEASE may also be seen as supporting RT’s multilevel perspective on concepts. Different ways in which the concepts may be used in therapy are presented, including the literal, metaphorical and metonymical understandings.

The article deals with E.A. Poe’s story The Murders in the Rue Morgue which centers on a mysterious murder case. Several acknowledged critical appreciations of the tale are presented and reevaluated. The paper endeavors to uncover inconsistencies in the traditional critical appro- aches as well as to unveil Poe’s sporadic literary incongruities embedded in the text. Stress is laid on the contrast between the traditional psychoanalytical readings of the story and the views of modern psychology and psychiatry. The article is intended to shed an alternative light on possible interpretations of the tale written by the 19th century pioneer in the field of the detective story and novel.

The authors present the opportunities of using multimedia as an art therapy technique in the treatment of people suffering from mental disorders, whilst pointing out the limitations of this method. They classify patients into two groups: those with mental disorders and those manifesting mental symptoms, and present, in addition to the benefits - the risk of the use of multimedia. Individuals with mental disorders, especially psychotic patients (e.g. those with schizophrenia) may react differently to the proposed multimedia techniques compared with neurotic patients. The way they react depends mainly on the stage of the disease (acute or stable, remission of symptoms) and its nature. The use of multimedia may help schizophrenic patients recover, but it may also worsen their mental state. It may activate psychotic symptoms (e.g. delusions of thought insertion), trigger fear, anxiety and lead to the withdrawal from art therapy activities. For patients with neurotic disorders (anxiety disorders such as social phobia) multimedia can be a training of creative powers in rebuilding the ego, self-observation and a training to create a social network. There is little available research on the topic, so it is difficult to clearly assess the effectiveness of this technique in the process of recovery. However, the progress of civilization in the rehabilitation of mentally ill individuals enforces measures suitable to the times in which we live.

In the 1970s, two Dutch psychiatrists, Anna Terruwe and Conrad Baars, developed an innovative theory and therapy of repressive neuroses. Their theory was founded on the philosophical anthropology of Saint Thomas Aquinas. This approach to neuroses stemmed from the observation that contemporary psychiatry and psychology lacked philosophical underpinnings and that sciences thus formed were unable to help people. The key concept in the theory of repressive neuroses is psychic wholeness—the unity of the senses, the intellect, and will under the natural guidance of the last two of these. Stressing the great importance of this wholeness of human sensory and intellectual faculties for mental health has its consequences in the approach to and treatment of repressive neuroses. Every neurotic disorder is a kind of disintegration (repression of emotions and lack of intellectual control); therefore, the therapeutic process is supposed to effect a reintegration of distinct human faculties. The article presents the concept of psychic wholeness in the context of the theory of repressive neuroses, with special focus on Aquinas’ anthropology as the philosophical basis for this theory. Bowen’s concept of differentiation of self is also discussed and its similarities to psychic wholeness are pointed out.

W artykule podjęto temat powracających w literaturze permutacji kulturowych: newrozy i bezdogmatyzmu. Przedmiotem badań uczyniono trzy powieści wydane w 2017 roku: #upał Michała Olszewskiego, Lata powyżej zera Anny Cieplak oraz Wzgórze psów Jakuba Żulczyka. Na marginesie analizy i interpretacji powieści przedstawiono kombinatoryczną metodę czytania literatury, głównym jej przedmiotem zainteresowania czyniąc poszukiwania nawracających w literaturze i kulturze permutacji.
The subject of the article are cultural permutations recurring in the literature: neurosis and without-dogma personality. The subject of the research were three novels published in 2017: #upał by Michał Olszewski, Lata powyżej zera by Anna Cieplak and Wzgórze psów by Jakub Żulczyk. The author presented – on the margin of the analysis and interpretation of the novel – the combinatorial method of reading literature, the main research interest in this method is to look for accumulating in literature and culture permutations.

W artykule omówiono chorobę skrupułów i nerwicę eklezjogenną oraz przedstawiono ich podobieństwo do zaburzeń obsesyjno-kompulsyjnych opisanych w Międzynarodowej Klasyfikacji Chorób ICD-11. Jednocześnie ukazano najważniejsze różnice między chorobą skrupułów i nerwicą eklezjogenną a zaburzeniami obsesyjno-kompulsyjnymi, z których to różnic wynikają znaczące trudności, zarówno w terapii jak i z punktu widzenia chorego. We wstępie artykułu przedstawiony został opis zaburzeń obsesyjno-kompulsyjnych oraz zaproponowano autorski schemat dynamiki przebiegu objawów tego zaburzenia. W dalszej części w ten schemat zostają wpisane objawy typowe dla choroby skrupułów i nerwicy eklezjogennej oraz zostają omówione największe trudności w ich leczeniu.
This article discusses scrupulosity disorder and ecclesiogenic neurosis and shows their similarity to obsessive-compulsive disorder described in the International Statistical Classification of Diseases ICD-11. It shows the most important differences between the scrupulosity disorder, ecclesiogenic neurosis and obsessive-compulsive disorder, the differences which result in difficulties in therapy and from the perspective of the patient. At the beginning, the article presents a description of obsessive-compulsive disorder and proposes a diagram of the dynamics of the symptoms of this disorder. Later, in this diagram the symptoms typical of the scrupulosity disorder and ecclesiogenic neurosis are included, and the difficulties in their therapy are discussed.

The aim of the study was to learn about the dysfunctional factors inherent to a family environment which can contribute to a child’s development, with a particular emphasis on the risk of future formation of psychosocial disorders among the individuals in adult life. The first part of the study includes the profile of a family, its functions and role in a child’s upbringing. It also presents a description of selected forms of social pathology occurring among family members and the characterization of their effects. Another part of the study is devoted to the description of selected mental disorders on the grounds of a situation at family home. The study also includes a methodological part taking into account, inter alia, the major problem and other detailed issues. Finally, the results of the research are presented on the basis of the analysis of documents of patients in a psychiatric ward over the last 10 years (2004-2014) and interviews conducted with psychiatrists. The article ends with the conclusions summing up the research.

Artykuł dotyczy swoistej „podwójnej” twórczości muzyków związanych z zespołem Neurosis i projektem Tribes of Neurot. Obie formacje tworzą ci sami artyści, płyty obu zespołów stanowią dwie, radykalnie różne wersje tych samych kompozycji. Materiałem badawczym jest tu relacja między płytami Times of Grace Neurosis oraz Grace Tribes of Neurot (1999). Obie płyty, choć niezależne, słuchane równocześnie stanowią niezwykle ciekawą nową wartość artystyczną. Artykuł skupia się na analizie brzmienia oraz swoistej „lustrzaności” kompozycji obu zespołów, której celem jest interpretacja artystycznych i światopoglądowych implikacji zabiegu zaproponowanego przez muzyków Neurosis.
This paper concerns at ”doubleness” in work of Neurosis and Tribes of Neurot. The activity of both groups seems to be simultaneous: the same artists in the both bands, the same names of their albums, the same trakclists, similar cover designs suggest to treat it not as different ventures but as a significant dual artistic project. Parallel between simultaneous albums of Neurosis and Tribe of Neurot makes an impression of disturbing presence of unclear alterego in their music.

Artykuł skupia się na analizie pojęć uwrażliwiających, które pozwalają uchwycić indywidualny wymiar doświadczenia klasowego, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem losów akademików pochodzących z klas ludowych. Opracowanie opiera się na analizie wtórnej jakościowych badań empirycznych oraz koncepcji teoretycznych poświęconych procesowi awansu społecznego. Ze względu na nieporównywalność źródeł, z których korzystałem, praca nie jest klasyczną metaanalizą, lecz ma charakter hermeneutyczny. Wiele z analizowanych prac oparto o źródła autobiograficzne, co powoduje, że uwidacznia się w nich terapeutyczny wymiar pisania, który pozwala autorkom i autorom przepracować przeszłe doświadczenia związane z szybkim awansem społecznym. Choć poddane analizie prace nie mają charakteru stricte teoretycznego, nie brakuje w nich autoteoretyzowania charakterystycznego dla każdej pracy biograficznej. W toku analizy zidentyfikowano i poddano szczegółowemu badaniu koncepcje wstydu klasowego, syndromu oszusta, piętna klasowego, opodatkowania kulturowego oraz nerwicy klasowej. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie polskiemu czytelnikowi pojęć uwrażliwiających, które mogą okazać się przydatne przy interpretacji nowych danych empirycznych.
The article focuses on sensitising concepts that allow us to capture the individual dimension of class experience with particular emphasis on the biographies of academics with working-class origins. The study is based on a secondary analysis of qualitative empirical research and theoretical concepts related to upward mobility. Due to the incomparability of various sources, the work is not a classic meta-analysis, but a hermeneutic comparison instead. Many of the analyzed works have been based on autobiographical sources with a clear therapeutic dimension. Writing allows authors to work through past experiences related to rapid upward mobility. Although the analyzed works are not strictly theoretical in nature, they are not devoid of self-theorizing that is typical of each biographical work. In the course of the analysis, the concepts of class shame, impostor syndrome, class stigma, cultural taxation, and class neurosis were identified and studied in detail. The aim of the article is to extract and organize sensitising concepts that might prove useful in interpreting new empirical data.

The borderline personality disorders may significantly affect the capacity to perform important marital obligations, which should be appropriately reflected by canonical procedures. Psychological models and concepts of mental disorders describe them on three levels: 1) clinically significant symptoms; 2) structures and pathological mechanisms maintaining personality organization; 3) origins, i.e. The interaction of biological, psychological and social factors. The articles aims at the presentation of borderline disorders on the descriptive level according to ICD-10 and DSM-IV-R criteria, and on the explanatory level based on Kernberg’s object relations theory. Due to this conception and clinical and scientific research conducted with the application of its assumptions, the functioning of persons with psychotic, borderline and neurotic personality organization becomes more and more understandable. The conceptions has been widely used to describe and explain the phenomena that occur in marital relationships.
