The article presents two attempts at applying J. Lukas iewicz's three-valued logic to analysis of the so-called gradable properties: T. Czeżowski's so-called ordering logics and J. Martin's attempt to connect Lukas iewicz's logic and the neo-Platonian hierarchy of entities. Unfortunately, those attempts were not successful. It can be noticed that in his approach Czeżowski mixed up gradability of truth with gradability of other properties. Martin found that Lukasiewicz's enriching of the division between truth and falsity with a third value suggests some neo-Platonian ontology in which truth - interchangeable with entity - is subject to gradation. However, he does not give an intuitively convincing way of reducing Lukas iewicz's threevalued logic to the corresponding Boole's algebra of compound properties (hence, to a structure belonging to the classical logic).

The aim of this article is to give a comprehensive introduction to the philosophical thought of Philo of Alexandria, a Jewish exegete of Scripture who was born and lived in Alexandria between ca 15-10 BC – 45-50 CE. The main part is preceded by short remarks concerning the state of research on Philo in Poland, Philonic nomenclature, his life and works. Then Philo's philosophy is examined, with special reference to its sources (Jewish and Greek), the conception of God, Logos, and other intermediaries, Philo's view of the world, man and ethics (including here the notions of assimilation to God, virtue, ideal of sage, freedom, conscience, contemplation of God and life after death) and Philo's influence on Gnostics, Middle Platonists and Church Fathers. Each issue is supported by references to Philo's works and placed in the context of scholarly discussion. The author puts forward his view that Philo's philosophical originality primarily consists in harmonizing Jewish and Greek tradition, and, as a result, re-interpreting them both in a thoroughly new manner. Accordingly, Philo can be regarded as the main predecessor of the patristic and medieval quest for synthesis of faith and reason. The bibliographical part includes main editions and translations of Philo's treatises including also scholarly literature not mentioned in the text. At the end the general bibliography as well as the bibliographies on Philo are given.

The starting point of the article is a critical analysis of the possible interpretations of the famous excerpt of Enn. IV 8[6],1,1–11, on the basis of which the image of the ecstasy of Plotinus as a momentary rapture, which Plotinus apparently experienced a certain number of times in his life, was formed. In the next part of the article this analysis becomes a pretext for considering, on the one hand, the elements which show the closely philosophical, rational character of the Plotinian system, yet on the other hand the irrational elements appearing in the text of Enneads. The author also tackles the problem of the continuity of the irrational component of Neoplatonic tradition. In this way she tries to answer the question whether Postplotinian Neoplatonism – sinking to irrationalist positions – broke with the rationalist premises of the philosophy of Plotinus, or, on the contrary, has its basis in certain philosophical assumptions which develop Plotinus’ views.

The article analyzes Rozmyślania sandomierskie (Sandomierz Meditations) by Kasper Drużbicki, a 17th century Jesuit. The text, which was probably read out during a monastic retreat, borders on homiletics and mystical writing. The author of the present article interprets it through the prism of strongly marked elements of Platonic and Neoplatonic tradition and tries to reconstruct the spiritual, philosophical and linguistic phenomena occurring at the interface of the physical and metaphysical spheres, among others the way symbols function, the shaping of the semantics of words, instability of the category of time, mutual permeation and complementation of the fields of esthetics and anesthetics. There are numerous references to philosophical writings and contemporary contexts within the theory of literature but their purpose is not so much to bring out factographical or historical dependencies or the existence of conscious intertextual references but rather to provide a detailed and multifaceted depiction of the main themes of Drużbicki’s work also in an attempt to elicit on these grounds certain general regularities in the history of human thought and religion.

The eminent German medievalist, Joseph Koch, assumed that Neoplatonism had been handed down to the Middle Ages basically in two forms: the one given to the Neoplatonist outlook by St. Augustine, the other being the result of the reworking of Neoplatonist themes by Pseudo-Dionysius. Rev. Prof. Kurdziałek, when quoting Koch’s opinion, used to remark, that this bipartite typology was not adequate as it failed to take account of another variety of Neoplatonism that had been operative in the shaping of medieval intellectual culture, namely the Boethian Neoplatonism. Few scholars in Poland in the second half of the 20th century devoted much attention to Boethius’ philosophy; yet contrary to the general trend, Rev. Prof. Kurdziałek constantly discussed issues and themes concerning Boethius in his lectures, monographs and articles. The author of the Consolation of Philosophy was never viewed by him as a mere intermediary or transmitter standing between antiquity and the Middle Ages; rather he presented Boethius as a thinker that was seminal in shaping medieval philosophy up to and inclusive the 12th century and even later on, even though his later influence had not been predominant. This article, based upon the study and analysis of Rev. Prof. Kurdziałek’s output aims to present his contribution to the area of Boethian studies as well as contributions made in this field by his disciples and followers.
Wybitny mediewista niemiecki, Joseph Koch twierdził, że neoplatonizm został przekazany wiekom średnim w dwóch zasadniczych postaciach, a mianowicie augustyńskiej i dionizjańskiej. Ksiądz profesor Marian Kurdziałek nawiązując do tej wypowiedzi Josepha Kocha zwykł był mawiać, że tę typologię średniowiecznych nurtów neoplatońskich należy uzupełnić o jeszcze jedną odmianę neoplatonizmu, neoplatonizm boecjański. W drugiej połowie XX wieku filozofią Boecjusza zajmowało się, zwłaszcza w Polsce, niewielu badaczy. Tymczasem, ks. Kurdziałek stale poświęcał Boecjuszowi wiele uwagi w swoich wykładach kursorycznych i monograficznych, czy też w swoich artykułach. Boecjusz nie był przez niego traktowany jako jedynie „pośrednik” pomiędzy starożytnością a średniowieczem, ale jako ten myśliciel, który w sposób zasadniczy uformował filozofię średniowieczną do XII wieku włącznie, a i później jego wpływ jest widoczny, choć już nie tak dominujący. Artykuł na podstawie analizy artykułów ks. prof. Kurdziałka przedstawia jego wkład do studiów nad Boecjuszem oraz prezentuje dokonania jego uczniów w tej właśnie dziedzinie.

Marsilio Ficino and Plato’s Charmides The following article, devoted to Ficino’s interpretation of Plato’s Charmides, consists of two parts. The first one is an introduction to Ficino’s comment. It brings up Ficino’s stylistics and the place of Charmides among the Plato’s dialogues. It seems that the decision to translate the works of Plato was not accidental. Th e philosopher’s views on governance perfectly justified the strong power of Cosimo de’ Medici in Florence. Poliziano praised his rule in his own preface to Charmides. Charmides, in turn, is an interesting dialogue because it was followed by Ficino’s censorship where the philosopher tackles Plato’s homoerotic fascinations. Th e translator, so honest and conscientious in other translations, this time decides to pare down the content of the dialogue. However, a comment written by him becomes a valuable compensation for these shortcomings. Ficino’s main philosophical notions (above all the prisca theologia doctrine) bloom in every passage of the paper. The author interweaves the wisdom of Arab mystics with the wisdom of ancient Greek mystics in order to reconcile these thoughts with the Christian revelation. Particularly interesting is the psychosomatic approach to human nature, that is the interdependence of the health of body and soul. As by the means of sophrosyne full harmony is to be discovered between them, we can even reach immortality. We are like Adam Kadmon, who, though imperfect, can improve his own and the world’s nature. The second part of the paper is a translation of Ficino’s synopsis of the dialogue, in which the author explains what can be understood under the term sophrosyne. Temperance needs to be instilled into a man’s mind early, as early as the patient is given medication. It should be given especially to young people, to those from noble families and to the beautiful. Physical beauty, in particular, hinders striking the right balance but, on the other hand, it can also stimulate insight into the beauty of the soul. The form allows us to explore the idea. When the violent desires are tamed, it is easier to balance all other activities. Th at is the reason why “moderation is best”, as Cleobulos of Lindos would say. When both the soul and body are healed, we achieve a harmonious consonance. In the spirit of this harmony, Pythagorean magical practices agree with the thoughts of Avicenna and Hippocrates’s medical practice to end up with the mysteries of Moses. That is what they have achieved – Enoch, Elijah and St. John the Evangelist. Enriched with necessary footnotes, the translation seems to represent an important example of Italian Renaissance interpretation of Platonic thought.

Hildegarda z Bingen to jedna z najbardziej wpływowych postaci w dwunastowiecznej myśli chrześcijańskiej. Jest ona autorką bardzo oryginalnej wizji świata, w której antropologia i kosmologia chrześcijańska przenikają się z filozoficznymi ideami, głównie platońskimi i neoplatońskimi. Obecnie jej zróżnicowana twórczość jest obiektem szczegółowych studiów teologicznych i filozoficznych, gdyż okazuje się, iż Hildegarda była nie tylko autorką ciekawej syntezy teologicznej, ale znała też i twórczo wykorzystywała wiele poglądów filozoficznych, głównie zaś chrześcijański neoplatonizm. Artykuł przedstawia współczesny stan badań nad źródłami myśli Hildegardy z Bingen, pokazując zmianę, jaka zaszła w odczytywaniu jej spuścizny. Głównym celem artykułu jest ukazanie możliwości nowej interpretacji myślicielki z Bingen w perspektywie chrześcijańskiego neoplatonizmu, głównie w wydaniu Jana Szkota Eriugeny.
Hildegard of Bingen was one of the most influential figures of 12th century Christianity. She is the author of a very original vision of the world, in which anthropology and Christian cosmology are intertwined with philosophical ideas, mainly Platonism and Neo-Platonism. Currently her diverse works are the subject of detailed theological and philosophical research; as it turns out, Hildegard was not only the author of interesting theological syntheses, but she also knew and incorporated many philosophical views, mainly Christian Neo-Platonism. The article outlines the current research on the philosophical works of Hildegard of Bingen, and shows the various ways in which her works have been interpreted. The article presents the latest and most important concepts for interpreting her views. The article’s main objective is to present the possibility of a new interpretation of Hilgedard’s thoughts, through the prism of Christian Neo-Platonism and mainly the thoughts of Johannes Scotus Eriugena.

In his tale entitled The Nameless City, Howard Phillips Lovecraft includes unspecified «paragraphs from the apocryphal nightmares of Damascius» among the «fragments» of the «cherished treasury of daemoniac lore» of the protagonist In the present essay, I suggest that there is a connection between this unusual reference and a note in the writer’s Commonplace Book, which refers to the notice by Photius (Bibl. cod. 130) on a lost work by Damascius that nowdays is generally referred to as Paradoxa and assumed to consist of a variegated collection of extraordinary stories and facts. I, therefore, delineate a general presentation of the testimony by the Byzantine Patriarch (very probably only indirectly known to Lovecraft), upon which I attempt to bring into focus the motivations that led the Providence to make the writer insert the name of Damascius in the fantastic plot of his story.

This paper lists and examines the explicit references to Aristotle’s Topics in the Greek Neoplatonic commentaries on the Categories. The references to the Topics by Porphyry, Dexippus, Ammonius, Simplicius, Olympiodorus, Philoponus and David (Elias) are listed according the usual prolegomena to Aristotle’s works. In particular, the paper reconstructs David (Elias)’s original thesis about the proponents of the title Pre-Topics for the Categories and compares Ammonius’, Simplicius’ and Olympiodorus’ doxographies about the postpraedicamenta. Moreover, the study identifies two general trends. The first one is that all the commentators after Proclus share the same general view about: the authenticity of the Topics, Aristotle’s writing style in them, the part of philosophy to which they belong, their purpose, their usefulness and their place in the reading order. The second one is that whereas Porphyry, Dexippus and Simplicius use the Topics as an aid to understanding the Categories, Ammonius, Olympiodorus and David (Elias) do not.

While the aim of the present paper is to analyze Olympiodorus’ commentary to Plato’s Phaedo, particular attention will be paid here to the role of hēdonē. The first part of the text presents the four conceptions of the pleasure that can be found in Plato’s dialogue. Although pleasure does not play the most prominent role either in the Plato’s dialogue or in the Neoplatonic commentary, Olympiodorus’ attitude to this issue reveals an important change and difference between the philosophical views of Plato and those of Olympiodorus. The latter does not seem to discern the possibility that pleasure can have its spiritual dimension (which Plato regards as possible). Thus, the experience of hēdonē is reduced solely to the sphere of the senses and even in this area its role needs to be minimized: in this form it has to be carefully measured and controled. Furthermore, Olympiodorus does not see that so-called hedonistic calculus: whilst it is not strictly speaking connected with virtuous actions, it still can have some significance for the the philosopher’s life.

The article examines how Hegel’s negative view of Byzantium is different from the Enlightenment’s critique and especially from Voltaire’s criticism of medieval history. In order to account for the Hegelian specificity of interpretation an effort is made to translate the chapter on Byzantium from the Philosophy of History in terms of the analysis of the Phenomenology of the Spirit and, more precisely, on the basis of the chapters on sensible certitude and on the domination and servitude. Considering that for Hegel every philosophical school possesses an autonomous value, one has to wonder why the Byzantine moment of the Spirit is destined to stagnation. The question about Hegel’s Neoplatonism, especially his affiliation with Proclus’s system, shows how the distance separating the Hegelian system from the Proclusian one explains the inadequacy of the latter as to drawing the consequences from the Byzantine spiritual stagnation.

This paper presents Olympiodorus’ and Damascius’ explanations of the philosopher’s practice of dying in Plato’s Phaedo. It also includes a presentation of Ammonius’ exegesis of the practice of death (meletē thanatou). The Neoplatonic commentators discern two kinds of death, the bodily or physical death and the voluntary death. Olympiodorus suggests that bodily death is only an image of voluntary death and cannot be recognized as an original death, because original death presupposes the preparation for death and the constant effort for the purification of the soul during the philosopher’s life-time. Only preparation for death and purification can ensure the complete separation of the soul from the body. Relative to this distinction is that between apothnēskein and tethnanai; these infinitives denote the dual meaning of death: death as an event or a process and death as a state. Our study examines thoroughly the subtle distinctions made by Olympiodorus and Damascius and offers a comparative analysis of the two definitions of death as well as that of purification. It reaches the conclusion that apothnēskein is a necessary condition of tethnanai, i.e. of a definitive release and parting of the soul from the body. On the other hand, the process of eventual purification, a notion which betrays the religious character of purification, can be identified with apothnēskein, which is the practice of dying by the true philosopher. Finally, our study also emphasizes and explains the difference between the voluntary philosophical death and the voluntary unphilosophical suicide; the latter guaranteeing only bodily or physical death.

Opis:
One of the main difficulties that Neoplatonic commentators of Aristotle face is the different treatment that the Categories and the Metaphysics offer to the question of the substance. After describing briefly the status quaestionis ousiae in Aristotle, and after tracing the main Neoplatonic interpretations of this doctrine (from Plotinus’ negative one to Porphyry’s positive and “conciliatory” one), this article attempts to demonstrate that the Neoplatonists of Athens and Alexandria, Syrianus and Ammonius, inaugurate a new interpretation of the Aristotelian doctrine. With regard to the category of substance in general and to the question of substantiality of “immanent form” in particular, this new interpretation goes beyond the positions of Plotinus and Porphyry and returns the ontological value to the Aristotelian substances. Unlike Plotinus, who recognized as ousia only that one intelligible, that is five genres of the Platonic Sophist, and unlike Porphyry, who defused the anti–Platonic fuse of the Categories, giving to this treaty a mainly semantic skopos, these philosophers, through their original study of the theory of the three states of katholou, already shed in the Porphyrian Eisagôgê, fit the immanent forms of Aristotle, recognized as substances and as a reflection of the transcendental universal, into the late antique Neoplatonic metaphysical triadic structure.

The aim of this article was to present a comparative interpretation of the selected poems by Tymoteusz Karpowicz (the poem alfaŚWIATŁOWSTĄPIENIE and a few accompanying poems) and Ezra Pound (The Cantos: LXXX, LXXXI and LXXXIII). The texts have been selected because of the theme of light, sun and visual perception. The comparative method is supposed to show 20th-century Polish poetry in the context of Anglo-American modernism. The relationship between the two poets seems to be hypothetical and one-sided. It has not been established so far whether the writings of Karpowicz were inspired by Pound’s texts. Thus, the article realized a model of contactless, comparative literary study, where comparisons are made on the basis of a typologic relationship. The first part of the article presented the theme of light in some non-poetic texts by Karpowicz and Pound and in their conception of art. The next two parts focus on the interpretation of poetry. The last chapter contained the conclusions drawn from the comparative analysis of chosen texts. The motif of light became not only a link between the selected poems, but also a reason for the comparison of the poetical techniques, specificity of style and the functions of linguistic experiments. The philosophical, Biblical, literary and even scientific contexts were evoked. A theoretical background was represented by the notion of reading/interpretation by Wolfgang Iser, transtextuality by Gérard Genette and the category of a model reader by Umberto Eco. The literary projects of Karpowicz and Pound impel readers to consider several issues. The most significant are: the limits of interpretation, obscurity or inexplicability of modern poetry and the problems of literary communication.

In seventh chapter of his On the Ecclesiastical Hierarchy Pseudo Dionysius the Areopagite treats on the ceremony of burial. While explaining the rites he makes a few remarks on the Christian understanding of the body and its fate after death, and how it is inconsistent with some pagan views on the matter. He discusses several opposite statements of the complete disintegration of the body, metempsychosis and seeing the life of the body after death exactly like the life on earth (On the Ecclesiastical Hierarchy VII 3, 1). This polemic is pointed against Neoplatonic philosophers who held such opinions, and to understand the difference between pagan and Christian view on the matter, the second part of the article considers the Neoplatonic view of the life after death. At Neoplatonic schools there were a different opinions of whether the embodiment is good or rather damaging to the intellectual soul. Philosophers like Plotinus and Porphyry explained descend of the soul as being evil, while Iamblichus and Damaskios thought otherwise. However there were points in which Neoplatonics were completely in agreement. All of them admitted that the happiness of the soul after death is possible only without the material body, and that the soul can reincarnate. Analysis of Neoplatonic view shows that the negative approach to the body is not the feature that could be ascribed to all Late Greek philosophers. Pseudo-Dionysius sees the problem in the Christian perspective. The soul at the moment of death does not loose completely the connection with the body and thus death does not mean the dissolution of the substance. However the new body that will be given to believers after resurrection will not be exactly the same with the earthly one.
