    Many aspects of architecture (style, ornaments, urban planning etc.) are symbolic in nature, resulting in similarity between the art of erecting structures and language understood as the relationship between signifé and signifant.Hence, architecture has its own grammar, semantics and dialectic variants. The grammar is expressed in the context of articulation form and pattern language. The semantics can be found in the relatively more superficial aspects like metaphors likening this branch of art to books or the owners of specific buildings in their appearance or demeanour. Such an approach is shared across centuries and can be found for example in ancient and Victorian texts. Additionally, the message conveyed by buildings and structures might serve as a form of propaganda while many elements like styles, ornaments and locations depend on the ideas expressed by the architects and the founders. This aspect is common to various ideas, beliefs and societies, whether consciously or subconsciously. Moreover, the realisation of different styles of architecture varies depending on the times and the specific needs of the community in which a particular building is erected in the same way language may vary depending on similar factors. Thus, architecture presents the same qualities that are expressed by various dialects.

    Opis:
    The purpose of this article is to present and analyze the foundations and premises of Nazi cultural policy, and the bodies responsible for its implementation, the two most important ones being: National Socialist Society for German Culture and the Ministry of National Enlightenment and Propaganda of the Reich. Policy in this case is interpreted as intentional activity of the authorities in the field of culture, aimed at influencing the attitudes and identity of the population of the Third Reich. The analysis covers the most important documents, statements and declarations of politicians and their actual activity in this domain. Adopting such a broad perspective allowed to comprehensively show both the language and the specific features of the messages communicated by the Nazi authorities, and its impact on cultural practices.

    Basing on historical analogy, the paper analyzes the problem of argumentative manipulation in the Nazi propaganda during World War II.. The present study of propaganda texts took into account two types of linguistic manipulation: “explanation” and “justification”, both playing a crucial role in forming the German postures during World War II. The analysis showed that the Nazi propaganda made use of false historical analogies, i.e. it juxtaposed and compared incommensurable facts, patterns of behaviour, feats leading to victory, etc. The aim of the manipulative technique of false historical analogy, based on explanation and justification, was to boost the Germans’ “combative” morale. This was expected to be achieved by way of shaping the required postures: a complete submission to the Nazi leadership, the endurance vis-à-vis losses inflicted, combating apathy and defeatism, creating a psychological “distance” with respect to the crisis and losses. The justification of the war effort was done through spreading fear, creating the “endurance” posture, appealing to the “Prussian virtues”, etc. The forging of these postures was meant to keep the German nation in the spirit of constant “combative readiness”.

    The aim of the article is to present the Nazi reality and its propaganda as seen through the eyes of Bruno – the hero of the novel John Boyne’s The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. The narrative shown from the perspective of a child reveals, in a unique way, the mechanics of demagogy and manipulation used by the Nazi propaganda. The symbolic fence between Bruno, the son of the concentration camp commandant, and a Jewish boy of the same age named Schmul, becomes the main theme of the novel. The story of the novel reveals the entanglement of the children in the workings of the history. Such a story construction is a starting point for the author of the article for the analysis of the complexity of propaganda measures and their influence on a young person, mainly in the affective, intellectual and social dimensions. The analysis involves not only the linguistic layer of the novel, but also the topography of the place and the characteristic use of Nazi symbols.

    Artykuł omawia działalność propagandy nazistowskiej w Litzmannstadt. Propaguje ona centralne pojęcia ideologii faszystowskiej, takie jak Volk, ziemia i przywództwo w walce. Celem działania politycznego i militarnego jest przywrócenie i utrzymanie zdolności dominacji kulturowej nad innymi narodami. Państwo nazistowskie jest jednolite etnicznie, językowo i rasowo – nie zna pojęcia tolerancji wobec mniejszości etnicznych.     The article discusses the activities of Nazi propaganda in Litzmannstadt. It promotes the central notions of the Nazi ideology, such as Volk, land, and leadership in struggle. The purpose of political and military operations was to restore and maintain the ability to culturally dominate other nations. The Nazi state was ethnically, lin guistically and racially homogeneous – it knew not the notion of tolerance towards ethnic minorities. A major characteristic of the propaganda was it its influence on the activities of administrative bodies.

    German Neo-Nazi groups have not stopped their Anti-Polish activity yet. They still, in the first place, come with revisionist objectives, not matter how Cold-War-or Polish-People’s- Republic-propaganda-like it can sound. The activity of the structures would not be possible without ideological backup. And so the Neo-Nazi ‘white collars’ determine the directions of the actions. One of such projects is Metapedia, a Neo-Nazi Wikipedia in which one can find many, shocking for us, information on Poland and the Poles. We cannot ignore it since, despite historic events, the 21st century Neo-Nazism has also many supports in our country.

    „Goniec Krakowski”, gazeta wydawana w Generalnym Gubernatorstwie przez niemieckie władze okupacyjne dla ludności polskiej (1939-1945), miała charakter zdecydowanie antyżydowski. Język wielu artykułów był prymitywny i brutalny, a także pełen kłamstw, przeinaczeń i obelg. Ta antyżydowska propaganda opierała się na starej teologii spiskowej, znanej z niesławnych Protokołów Starszych Syjonu: Żydzi dążą do opanowania światowej gospodarki, polityki i kultury. Kolejne etapy niemieckiej polityki wobec Żydów uzasadniano potrzebą „wyzwolenia” Polaków spod żydowskiej dominacji. Można było znaleźć artykuły dotyczące pracy przymusowej, ograniczenia działalności gospodarczej, represji wobec Żydów; wiele uwagi poświęcano też antyżydowskiej agitacji wśród Polaków. Z drugiej strony, masowa eksterminacja Żydów została całkowicie pominięta w gazecie.
    „Goniec Krakowski”, a newspaper issued in the General Government by the German occupational authorities for the Polish population (1939-1945), had a strongly anti-Jewish character. The language of many articles was primitive and brutal, as well as full of lies, distortions and insults. This anti-Jewish propaganda was based on an old conspiracy theo-ry, knowing from infamous Protocols of the Elders of Zion: Jews seeking to control the world economy, politics and culture. The subsequent stages of the German policy toward the Jews was justified by need of ‘liberation’ of Poles from the Jewish domination. One could find articles related to forced labor, restrictions on economic activities, measures of repression toward Jews; much attention was also paid to anti-Jewish agitation among the Poles. On the other hand, the mass extermination of Jews has been completely omitted by the newspaper.

    Artykuł ukazuje spojrzenie przybyszów z USA na przebieg Parteitagów odbywających się w latach 1933–1938. W tekście zaprezentowano poglądy amerykańskich wizytatorów na sposób organizacji wydarzenia oraz ich odczucia względem nazistowskich gospodarzy. Ukazano powody wzrostu popularności Parteitagów wśród obserwatorów ze Stanów Zjednoczonych. W tekście nakreślono, w jakim stopniu propaganda III Rzeszy przynosiła realne efekty i przekładała się na wzrost sympatii pronazistowskich u obywateli USA.The article presents the perception gained by Americans of the party rallies (Parteitags) held in 1933–1938. It includes opinions of American visitors on the organisation of such rallies congresses and their feelings towards their Nazi hosts. There are also reasons of increased popularity of Parteitags among observers from the United States explained, together with an explication to what extent the propaganda of the Third Reich was effective and translated into the growth of pro-Nazi sympathies of American citizens.

    Der Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit der sprachlichen Manipulation in den öffentlichen Reden aus der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus. Darin wird der Frage nachgegangen, welche sprachlichen Mittel zur Manipulation in propagandistischen Aussagen von den Propagandisten eingesetzt wurden, um das Auditorium zu beeinflussen und ideologische Inhalte zu übermitteln. Aufgrund der Tatsache, dass das Spektrum von sprachlichen Strategien und Mitteln der Manipulation sehr breit ist, begrenzt sich die exemplarische Analyse auf die ausgewählten rhetorischen und pragmatischen Mittel sowie Satzstrukturen, die versteckte Andeutungen ermöglichen. All diese ausgewählten Beispiele und suggestiven Maßnahmen kommen besonders oft in den Texten dieser Art vor und demzufolge können als Paradebeispiel von manipulativen Strategien gelten. Darüber hinaus wird in dem Beitrag die Terminologie präzisiert. Die Begriffe wie Persuasion, Manipulation, sprachliche Manipulation, Manipulation der Sprache sowie Propaganda werden oft in dem (sprach)wissenschaftlichen Diskurs miteinander verwechselt oder synonym verwendet. Demzufolge wird in dem Artikel eine klare und übersichtliche Abgrenzung dieser Begriffe gemacht. Die ausgewählten manipulativen Strategien werden am Beispiel der Rede im Berliner Sportpalast vom 18. Februar 1943 veranschaulicht. Dementsprechend wird im Beitrag ebenfalls auf Kontext und den historischen Hintergrund der Rede eingegangen sowie die anderen massensuggestiven Maßnahmen, die auf der Textebene zu finden sind. Die untersuchten Strategien werden bis heute in den Texten mit einem persuasiven und manipulativen Charakter eingesetzt.
    The article is devoted to use of the linguistic manipulation techniques in the public speeches from the Nazi Germany. The main aim of this article is to study what kind of language-manipulative-techniques were used by the propagandists to create propaganda speeches to influence the audience and convey ideological content. Because the spectrum of linguistic strategies and tactics of manipulation is very broad, the exemplary analysis is limited to the selected rhetorical and pragmatic tactics and sentence structures that allow for hidden hints. All these selected examples and suggestive tactics occur particularly often in texts of this type and can therefore be considered prime examples of manipulative strategies. In addition, the terminology is specified in this article. Terms such as persuasion, linguistic manipulation, manipulation of language and propaganda are often confused with one another in linguistic discourse or used synonymously. Accordingly, a clear and concise definition of these terms is made in the article. The selected manipulative strategies are illustrated by an example of the speech in the Berlin Sportpalast (Total war speech) from February 18th, 1943. So, the contribution also deals with the context and the historical background of the speech, as well as the other mass suggestive tactics that can be found in the text. The examined strategies are still used in texts with a persuasive and manipulative character.

    The interwar period was characterized by the active development of national eugenics projects in Europe. A number of factors contributed to the interest in eugenics and the desire to implement them: the making of new states and consolidation of nations in East Central Europe, the need to overcome the legacy of the Great War and deal with social problems (for example, venereal diseases and prostitution), and the development of scientific and international academic contacts. Belarusian debates on eugenics took place mostly on the periphery of the more developed discourses – those in Russia, Poland, and, later on, in Germany. The Russian scholars in the larger university centres contributed to the development of the Soviet eugenics project, which gained the support of the Soviet authorities. In the first decade of their rule, the Bolsheviks were not against debates on eugenics about how to improve the ‘nature of man’. The Soviet eugenics project, which focused on studying problems of heredity, genetics, and genealogy, was stopped when the authorities placed rigid ideological controls over science. In Soviet Belarus, no academic circle appeared that engaged in the debates on eugenics. The development of the eugenics movement in Poland was closely linked to the formation of the newly established Polish state. After the Great War, the Polish eugenics movement made attempts to integrate itself into the public life of the country. Polish medical doctors contributed to the development of the eugenics movement. During the Second World War, a group of Belarusian nationalists tried to formulate a basis for a Belarusian racial eugenics project, following the main ideas of Nazi ‘racial hygiene’.
