    In the year 2001 we celebrate the fifty anniversary of the activity of National Institute of Telecommunications under its present name (in Polish: Instytut Łączności). Although we can date earlier the beginnings of the Institute, we will not present here its detailed history that is discussed in other papers. This paper presents rather the transformation of the Institute in last years, resulting from the systemic transformation of Poland. We describe: new mission of the Institute, the results of structural changes of the Institute in last five years, an outline of long-term research programme. Finally, the paper addresses the challenges before the Institute on the verge of the new millennium.

    The paper presents a collection - formatted in tables, lists, graphs and photos - of the most important information about National Institute of Telecommunications in the 1934-2009 period. It recalls important events, people linked to NIT, Institute directors, chairmen of the Scientific Council, publications as well as important prizes and distinctions awarded to NIT employees.

    Wskazano prace z zakresu zasilania urządzeń telekomunikacyjnych, prowadzone w latach 1947-2009 najpierw w Państwowym Instytucie Telekomunikacyjnym, a później w Instytucie Łączności w Warszawie. Zwrócono uwagę na duże zaangażowanie pracowników Zakładu Systemów Zasilania w rozwiązywanie skomplikowanych problemów dotyczących zasilania.
    The paper presents overview of research and development work on power supply for telecom equipment, carried out between 1947 and 2009 at the "old" (pre-split) and "new" National Institute of Telecommunications in Warsaw. It is emphasized that engagement and hard work of employees of the Department of Power Systems has been crucial for solving complex power supply problems.

    Referring to the seventy years of tradition, the article shows the link between the National Institute of Telecommunications (NIT) and the State Telecommunications Institute established in 1934. The NIT's past achievements are mentioned, but the main focus is on its current activities. The plans, goals and tasks faced by the Institute today are also presented.

    Opisano początki telewizji w Polsce. Omówiono prowadzone pierwsze prace badawcze, prezentowane na wystawie w Związku Nauczycielstwa Polskiego, a także nadawanie pierwszych programów z eksperymentalnego studia w Instytucie Łączności przy ul. Ratuszowej. Scharakteryzowano następne kierunki badań oraz opracowywane urządzenia. Podkreślono zaangażowanie pracowników przy wykonywaniu tych zadań.
    The beginnings of television in Poland are discussed. The first research works presented during the exhibition At the Union of Polish Teachers building and the first TV transmissions from experimental studio at NIT located at Ratuszowa Street in Warsaw are described. Directions of the next research as well as early equipment are characterized. The enthusiasm and involvement of employees crucial for success are stressed.

    Environmental monitoring is of growing interest around the globe and there is a clear need for better education in this area. However, the progress is incredibly fast here and wireless sensor networking is a relatively new area of research, so no standard curricula are available yet. In 2012, the International School "Sustainable Wireless ICT Solutions for Environmental Monitoring" was organized by the International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in collaboration with a few other entities. The school aimed at exposing young scientists from around the world to the newest wireless solutions for environmental monitoring. The school was followed by an awareness conference, which aimed at identifying issues that would benefit from a wider scientific collaboration. This paper begins with general information about the ICTP educational activities related to wireless technologies and applications. Then it focuses on the program of the school and conference. It shows what topics were included (and what were disregard) and what approaches were applied in order to achieve the best results with the (very) limited resources available.
