Opis:
The aim of the study was to analyse the relations of cohesion in Emil Zola's Nana. First, we provide an outline of essential terms referring to the notions of „coherence” and „cohesion” (after Halliday and Hasan in Cohesion in English). This has been the basis for a discussion of the cohesive phenomena best represented in the analysed novel, i.e. diaphoric relations – anaphoras and cataphoras – with respect to various criteria. Most of the terms that have been used come from Marek Kęsik's La cataphore. In order to ensure their comprehensibility, the terms have been illustrated with examples taken from Zola's novel. Thus, we have distinguished two groups of anaphoric expressions: pronominal and nominal anaphoras, the latter subdivided into „faithful” and „unfaithful”, possessive and associative (the last, very interesting case has led us to specify different types). Next, we have presented epithetic, nominal, indirect anaphoras and anaphoras sensu lato. Cataphoras have been classified as indirect, sensu stricto or sensu lato.

Tell el-Amarna; Kom el-Nana, późny Rzym
Opis:
The archaeological remains of Tell el-Amarna (a site in Middle Egypt, which was rediscovered in the early 19th century) are not limited only to the New Kingdom period. Human activity from Middle/Upper Palaeolithic is attested in flint scatters on the desert plain. From the Old Kingdom period fragments of pottery suggest the site served a settlement at this date, probably connected with the Hatnub alabaster (travertine) quarries. The most substantial reoccupation of the site, before the present day, dates to the Late Roman period, when buildings and cemeteries were inserted among the ruins of the New Kingdom city: most notably, the monastery at Kom el-Nana was located in the southern part of the Main City on the line of the Royal Road. In the same period, at Amarna the North Rock Tombs were reoccupied and assigned a new purpose as a settlement for a Christian community.

Opis:
Crosses between Betula nana and B. utilis 'Doorenbos' were undertaken in order to obtain interspecific hybrids which could be characterized by wide spreading stems, strong branching habit, decorative clear white bark and an interesting shape of purple leaves. The research purpose was to examine genetic diversity of the 16 F1 and F2 putative progenies by using the RAPD-PCR method and the ploidy analysis. A total of 242 RAPD markers were scored with 24 primers and 220 (90.9%) polymorphic bands were found. In the NJ dendrogram, cluster I consisted of the female parent - B. nana and 12 hybrids and cluster II grouped the male parent - B. utilis 'Doorenbos' with 4 hybrids (F2/2, F1/8, F1/7 and F2/1). The 2-D scaling by PCoA was in agreement with the similarity index, i.e. two hybrids (F1/8, F2/2) grouped with the male parent while others with female parent. Classification of the hybrid plants by chromosome counting demonstrated that 13 hybrids were confirmed with accurate chromosome counts as being diploid (2n=2x=28) and 3 plants (F1/7, F1/8, F2/2) as triploid with 42 chromosomes.

A British-Polish plant study expedition to Greenland took place from 9th to 19th of August 2022. Its members were Paul Bartlett, the supervisor of the Stone Lane Gardens, the UK's national birch and alder collection, and Marcin Kowalczyk, the editor-in-chief of Publishing House Euterpe, owner of a private arboretum in Bolechowice located near Kraków. The main objective of the expedition was to observe birch trees in the Qinngua Valley, as well as in other locations. Changes in the morphological characteristics of birches depending on the location were observed, as well as the widespread occurrence of Betula glandulosa hybrids with Betula pubescens. This text is a collection of notes by a Polish member of the expedition.

Opis:
The goal of the study was to check if the shape-describing characters, calculated as ratios of the morphological measured traits are more stable, compared to the latter, and can be treated as independent on environmental conditions. The test was based on the example of leaves of Salix herbacea and Betula nana. The individuals of the two populations of S. herbacea from Tatra Mts. were divided into two groups: with bigger and smaller leaves. The two populations of B. nana came from different substrata: the first one, collected from the mire on the lower altitude, had bigger leaves, and the second, collected from the granite plateau and higher altitude, had smaller leaves. For both species, the measured traits were generally more variable than the ratios calculated on their basis, as expressed by the variation coefficients. The results of Students' t-test analyses showed statistically significant differences between the two groups of S. herbacea and the two populations of B. nana with respect to almost all the measured characters, and no such differences for the calculated traits, reflecting the leaf shape. As the differentiation of the leaf size was probably bound to the environmental factors, the lack of the dependence of the leaf shape on the leaf size could lead to a conclusion of independence of the leaf shape on the environment conditions.

A sample of Betula nana from the Linie reserve near Dąbrowa Chełmińska, have been fingerprinted using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD). The high level of genetic variation was detected. All individuals had unique genotypes, supporting the generally high resolving power of RAPD’s. For the conservation strategy, information about the distribution of the genetic variation within and among populations plays very important role. Thus, extensive study in other populations of dwarf birch is needed.

Alterations in the genetic apparatus of mice bone marrow cells and testicles caused by Hymenolepis nana, Ascaris suum and Toxocara canis metabolites have been investigated by means of micronuclear test application. The activity of spermatogenesis has been investigated at experimental hymenolepidosis, migrating ascariasis and toxocarosis with the use of ³H-timidine. Helminths metabolites have been established to exert a mutagenie effect on somatic cells of bone marrow, spermatogonies and also on the generative cells (spermatides) of helminths in invaded mice. The concurrent increase in micronucleus number in erythrocytes, spermatogonies and in spermatides (to a lesser degree) of invaded mice has been revealed. The decrease in spermatogenesis activity has been established in experimental hymenolepidosis, migrating ascariasis and toxocarosis in invaded mice.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to present the past and actual prevalence of Entamoeba histolytica and other intestinal protozoa in Poznań Province. Although in Poland there are only few accurate data concerning the prevalence of intestinal protozoa, the results of some studies were found reliable. In a survey conducted in 1958 in an orphanage in Poznań (Kasprzak and Karlewiczowa) the intestinal protozoa were found with high prevalence (Table 1). After six years this prevalence decreased considerably (Karlewiczowa and Kasprzak, 1964). Because at the same time such a decrease in intestinal protozoa prevalence, especially that in Entamoeba coli, was observed in the whole population of the Poznań Province, long-term surveys were undertaken. The diagnosing of intestinal protozoa in faeces of 4165 persons, performed at more points in time in the period of 1963 to 1986 in the Poznań Province, were conducted by the same highly skilled staff. Decreasing rates of infection were seen for each amoeba species at nearly each point in time, particularly in the first eight years of observation (Table 2). By using the "amoebic index" and "amoebic prevalence rate" in assessing epidemiological factors (acc. WHO, 1969), the considerable reduction in both indices should be accounted for the improvement of the sanitation and socio-economic status in our country. After the Second World War some Polish authors expressed the fear that after returning to the country, the Polish soldiers who had fought in the endemic regions of invasive amoebiasis, infected with E. histolytica, would constitute sources for spreading amoebiasis and that the disease would be a nucleus of a new, hitherto unknown, social calamity in Poland. Fortunately, the fear did not come true. Although in this country the infection with amoebae, also with E. histolytica, decreased considerably after several years, unfortunately, some opinions still prevail, being the source of an amoebo-mania in the medical staff and corresponding amoebophobia in the patients.
