Opis:
The transfer of so-called traditional journalistic genres to the Internet usually results in significant changes to their distinctive features. A good example is the Internet report, which simultaneously uses various forms of communication with recipients (e.g. text, film, image) and becomes both multimedia and intertextual material, which results in its hypertextual character. Similarly to any hypertext, because it often has a multimodal structure, it is also a kind of semi-finished product, as it only becomes a carrier of meanings and a complete work during its reception. As a result, extra tasks are set for the recipients. They must even more fully than in the case of classic literature or literary works participate in the process of decoding the meaning and become even more co-creators of the sense of the work that is being read. This article aims to demonstrate the essential features of how reports function on the Internet by referring to two specific materials that fall within the definition of the Internet report. Apart from this, the text attempts to confront the new variety of reporting with selected literary theories, such as the concept of “the death of the author” by Roland Barthes. Lastly, the article aims to cover the characteristics of the different types of recipients of hypertext forms of reporting functioning in an Internet environment.

The article presents the results of analyses of the economic and transport links between the south-western part of the Łódzkie Province and its capital, the city of Łódź, carried out for a study prepared by the Railway Institute. Railway network deficiencies preventing the efficient use of railway transport of passengers and cargo are outlined. An analysis of the potential utilization of the fact that the TEN-T runs through the province is carried out and a program of the necessary infrastructural projects is also proposed. Improving the accessibility of the region is analyzed in view of the multimodality of railway, bus, and private transport systems in combination with a system of interchanges and parking lots. This approach allows the synergy effects of the particular elements of the transport system to be evaluated.

In this contribution, we intend to examine to what extent multiliteracy approaches make it possible to emphasize and develop various aspects of reflexivity in action in a migrant student who is in close contact with several languages within his family and school environment. To answer the source question, we gathered a corpus of various graphic and verbal signs among secondary school multilingual students that we analyzed according to a qualitative approach in the migratory and educational context of Saint-Étienne (France). It is about student output resulting from a school project that aimed at strengthening the students’ literacy competences, along with highlighting their native cultures and languages. As a reflexive tool, the depicted project turned out to be a bridge towards a multi-literacy approach, for which we have detailed the guidelines, beneficial for the learning of the French language, or the learning of any new language; it entails supporting the making of the subject in writing, then allowing an updating of the migratory experience.

The subject of the article are the ways of popularizing scientific and popular science knowledge by using Twitter as a social media platform. The research corpus comprises 100 tweets which come from institutional and individual senders, including both representatives of the world of science as well as of the media that aim to popularize scientific knowledge. As a result of the medialinguistic analysis, which focused on the structural and functional plane of the studied media texts, the high representativeness of multimodal tweets was noted. Namely, language and image contextualize each other: the image allows us to fill the semantic gap resulting from the ellipticalness of the verbal layer of a given tweet. Thus, the contribution of the multimodal information design to knowledge transfer in digital discourse has been demonstrated.

In my investigation, I worked with 6 persons with diagnosed aphasia. I introduce some possible perspectives on the exploration of the extent of speech damage in persons with aphasia and the various ways in which they substitute for language deficiency with the aid of gestures. From the viewpoint of data processing methods, on the one hand, I explore the parameters of spoken language, such as the quantity of words, and, on the other hand, the parameters of gestures, such as the quantity of gestures, diversity of gestures, etc. In aphasic persons speaking Czech, I verify the following assumption established by Jakob et al. (2011): the more speech-limited an aphasic person is, the more gestures he/she produces during the interpretation of a story. It was found that the number of words produced by aphasic persons varies, partially dependent on the specific type of aphasia. This is particularly true on both ends of the scale – people with large speech distortion use the highest quantity of gestures, people with low speech distortion use gestures to a lesser extent. Within the classification of semantic gestures, I focus particularly on iconic and deictic gestures. In addition, I presume that symbolic gestures (i.e. emblems) do not occur in aphasic persons’ speech, because aphasic persons prefer gestures that display the plot in the most concrete way. My data correlate with other studies dealing with this topic – aphasic persons do use gestures intentionally to substitute for their verbal deficiency. At the same time, they mostly use very concrete (iconic) gestures, which enable them to transmit a large volume of information.

The advertising in words, images and sound not only focuses on conveying relevant information about products, but also on stimulating the corresponding emotions at the recipient. The boredom with traditional forms of advertising, negative attitudes towards advertising and often superficial reception of advertising messages make the use of emotional persuasion necessary. The article focuses on the types and interaction of emotions in culinary commercials from three periods: 50s, 80s and the present. It is assumed that different living and communication conditions a few decades ago and today have a significant influence on the appearance and interaction of emotions in the advertising text.

For example, negative emotions during physical therapy are handled with verbal or bodily means. The emotional state while doing Pilates is associated with the relationship between trainer and client, with group cohesion, with having fun during physical activity and with sustaining motivation. The corpus for the multimodal analysis are video tapings of natural interactions.

Opis:
As moving, multimodal texts, devised to be embodied by an actor, cinematic texts combine many characteristics which make them difficult to grasp, and which give their translation a high level of complexity. Those are paramount in dubbing. Combined to the technical and linguistic issues at stake, the process induces a singular relation between the audiovisual translators and the verbal material of the dialogues. This is often solved through a functionalist approach, seeking a dynamic equivalence which takes into account the many components of the filmic text, for the benefit of the dubbing actors and, eventually, the foreign audience. After addressing the questions of the authorial and legal status of the translators as scriptwriters, this article draws on several examples taken from different American cinematic genres to illustrate the  various aspects of this relation in the French audiovisual translation context.

The subject of the study is a series of advertisements – requests from the Siepomaga.pl website in terms of the method of acquisition of recipients (using Cicero’s captatio benevolentiae principles), convincing and persuading to act through proper selection of rhetorical arguments. The main procedure is to create statements taking into account the common auditorium, bearing the hallmarks of ordinariness. Language structures, toposes, arguments explicitly referring to pathos; the most typical strategies are modesty and raising the value of recipients as a last resort; and toposes: unequal fight against disease, time passing relentlessly as well as causative reasons (support is only a means to obtain priceless values: health and life). A characteristic feature of the requests posted on the Siepomaga.pl website is the presence of various semiotic codes typical for the Internet space, a kind of multimodality of communication in which verbal communication and image coexist. In addition, interaction is an important persuasive element, giving the recipients – the donors – an immediate effect of reward for taking action in the form of satisfaction with the real contribution visible in the account balance bar.

Multimodal techniques (meaning the use of narrative modes signalised by various typographies etc.) enable a fuller presentation of Caravaggio’s mental dysfunction (in the novel the focalizing role is performed by, among others, the notes of the painter who is falling into obsession and madness – it is these that form his internal storyworld). Confrontation with the journalistic account, provided by the alter ego of the very author of the novel (so called sylleptic narrator) – that is the second level of narration – constitutes the modal frame for the presentation of the artist’s fate and contributes to showing the mental state of Caravaggio who is obsessed with “black sun” (this obsession might be the source of the chiaroscuro technique), and who sees in hallucinations his own severed head. This way, Camilleri creatively exploits the motif of decapitation, found in Caravaggio’s paintings, following many research studies showing that the heads found in the paintings could have been the painter’s self-portraits and expressions of his expiation. This context is supplemented by reproductions of Caravaggio’s paintings, which are embedded in the narration and “commented upon” in his fictional journal, thus constituting yet another layer registering (and illustrating) what takes place in the artist’s mind.

Opis:
Multimodality is an integral characteristic of Audiovisual Translation. Regardless of type and genre, audiovisual texts (i.e. film, TV series, videogame) are above all semiotic constructs comprising several signifying codes that operate simultaneously in the production of meaning. While audiences mechanically receive and interpret the information transmitted by each of these codes and signs, audiovisual translators must know their functioning and consider their possible impact on translation operations. In this context, images represent one of the major challenges to ensure coherence within audiovisual translation. This paper sets out to explore the main strategies used to explicit iconographic information in the target text. These practices typically involve, but are not limited to, the inclusion of linguistic signs related to the icon as well as the inclusion of signs belonging to other meaning codes, thanks to the possibilities that new technologies and digitalization now offer. Linked to the notions of transcreation and localization, these help target audiences fill gaps in the understanding of audiovisual texts, but also promote overtranslation. This may lead to an extreme domestication, a phenomenon in which foreign cultures would be erased. In this regard, we wonder if such practices will not assume a paternalistic approach to target audiences.

Abstract en: The article focuses on the analysis of the concept of multimodality in the context of zombiecentric stories. The article attempts to indicate the variety of narrative techniques in works a priori perceived as belonging to a lower aesthetic category due to their common (though unfounded) inclusion in the horror genre. Various aspects of multimodality, expressed in the visual dimension (e.g. typographic or illustrative) or in the use of focalization, were subjected to close analysis. These aesthetic procedures are employed not only to depart from the cliché plot schemas of zombie pandemic, but are also used for worldbuilding as tools enabling construction of credible and deeply immersive communications. The high creative competence of the authors of zombie-centric narratives attests to the research potential these texts have to offer.

Opis:
Nonsense and humour are two cognitive and linguistic phenomena that frequently overlap. The focus of this article falls on chosen instances of humorous nonsense poetry, targeted at English-speaking children, which contains verbal and visual modes of expression. Formal sources of nonsense-creation in natural language can be several, among others semantic anomaly, syntactic ill-formedness and structural ambiguity, phonetic and graphological experimentation. The interplay of nonsense with the visuality of the text in children's poetry assumes three distinct forms: 1) visual poems, 2) multimodal texts,, where illustrations, often nonensical and funny in themselves, support the verbal text, and 3) texts based on the phonetic play. Examples will be drawn from the classics of the Anglophone children's poetry: Mother Goose, the Victorian classics L. Carroll and E. Lear, 20th-c. British and American poets - L. Hughes, e.e. cummings, T. Hughes, J. Agard, as well as the Polish-British pair W. Graniczewski and R. Shindler. In all the poems to be analyzed multimodality has an important role to play in the creation and strengthening of the effect of humorous bisociation/incongruity. A tight intertwining of the phonetic, semantic and visual layers in such texts becomes an additional challenge for their translators. The theoretical keystone for our considerations remains H. Bergson's study Laughter (1900/2008), which deftly combines the Superiority, the Incongruity and the Release Theory of Modern Humour Studies. Bergson rightly links the sources and effects of the nonsensical and the comic to the notion of game/play and to the idea of dream-like illusion they create.
