Results of social change which can be seen in the area of family life, especially include crisis of the institution of marriage, redefinition of parent's roles in the parenthood or monoparenthood. The role of the mother is socially important and appreciated. In the academic discourse on the contemporary motherhood, a category of single mother or independent mother appears increasingly. Monoparental family, like the ones in which the spouses got divorced, are becoming more visible form of the family life in the contemporary societies. The aim of the article is to show the socio-cultural conditions influencing the ways of expressing emotions and feelings by mothers. It presents the results of the analysis of the Internet discourse on negative attitudes towards motherhood and/or a child/children. The text is built on the author’s research on the issue of “regretting motherhood” and is based on a qualitative analysis of the content—blog entries/posts: nieperfekcyjnie.pl [notperfect.pl], matkawygodna.pl [slackermom.pl], mamwatpliwosc.pl [ihaveadoubt.pl], and in the group—Internet forum—Żałuję rodzicielstwa [I regret parenthood]. The theoretical basis were the concepts included in the sociology of symbolic interactionism.

Making a commitment to be a mother and fulfi lling this role is a long-term process, which consists of different quality stages. One can notice an analogy between the stages of being a mother and the course of nature. This similarity concerns the outline of development: birth, adolescence, maturation, and twilight of one’s life. Like each subsequent season of the year, each stage puts new evolutionary tasks on the woman and their successful accomplishment leads to her acquisition of important skills and characteristics. The beginning of each stage of the role of a mother is marked by a change in the growth and functioning of a child.

Postponing motherhood is a widespread phenomenon across developed countries, however only few studies look into very late motherhood in post-socialist countries using individual level data. In this study, I look at the context of the first childbirth in Poland in the midst of the political transformation of 1989. Employing sequence analysis I reconstructed life trajectories of women who experienced the transition to adulthood during the late 1980’s and the early 1990’s and have just completed their fertility histories. Individual data from the 2011 GGS-PL and the 2011 FAMWELL Survey were used. Comparing paths of mothers’ lives, I searched for differences in educational, professional and conjugal careers between women who gave birth before the age of 30 and after the age of 35. The results show how various life careers crisscross over the life course leading women to late motherhood.

From assimilation, through transformation to studies within relationships: Understandings of nonheteronormative motherhood and ways forwardNonheteronormative motherhood has been explored in many studies so far, aiming to explore the strategies of women who develop and maintain kinships in patriarchal settings. So far, the approaches to motherhood beyond hetero/normativity have been mostly focused on considering either assimilationist strategies or transformational potential of families of choice. In this article I would like to propose one of the possible ways enabling us to avoid these approaches. I argue that Rosi Braidotti’s framework of nomadic subjectivity and considering nonheteronormative motherhood as embodied experience might provide us with a lens through which we can look at mothering as de-centred, continuous becoming on a daily basis.

The article highlights the relationship between transformation of the gender contract and the evolving social perceptions of motherhood in contemporary Poland. As it is assumed in line with my paper’s empirical analysis, motherhood is one of social nodal points as well as a constitutive point for women’s experience. However, the change to the ways in which motherhood is socially constructed in contemporary public and private spheres reflects the on-going transformations of the public and the private realm. Within the former and the latter, new conceptions of gender contract are being constantly proposed and are negotiated. By the same token, motherhood gradually moves from within its nature-driven and strictly private conceptualisation to becoming a social construct re/formulated in contemporary Polish public sphere. Within that process, both proponents and, especially, opponents of women empowerment voice their concerns.

Opis:
In general, motherhood is subject to a positive social valuation. However, there are exceptions here – one of them is fulfilling the role of a mother of the child with disability. The aim of the conducted study was to answer the question: What similarities and differences exist in the role of a mother of a disabled child over the lifetime of women taking part in the research? A technique of an open, in-depth interview was used. Four mothers, who are raising a child with disability, participated in the study. The analysis of collected research material allows capturing positive changes taking place in the fulfilment of the role of a disabled child’s mother. Today the time of diagnosing the intellectual disability has significantly shortened. Younger women can count on the partners’ support; older ones – did not receive such help. Currently the availability of support has increased from non-governmental organisations; in the past there was a lack of foundations or associations. However, there are aspects of motherhood, which, despite the passing years, are permanent. These include fear and sadness of a mother originating from hearing the news about the child’s disability, difficulties encountered while performing the mother’s role, which arise from the nature of disability, and the sense of insufficient assistance from the state authorities.

Choosing the right childcare service for one’s child to compensate for parents’ professional working time is a significantly important decision for a mother. The study aimed to analyze whether parental styles are predictors of satisfaction with childcare services among mothers. This link was tested on a sample that consisted of 200 adult women (Mage = 32.39 years; SDage = 4.47) who were mothers of children aged 18 to 36 months. The results indicated that accepting and autonomous parenting styles were related to higher satisfaction with childcare services. In contrast, excessively demanding, protective, and inconsistent parenting styles were related to lower satisfaction with childcare services. However, given the intercorrelations between parenting styles, we found that two of them sufficiently predicted satisfaction with childcare services: acceptance (positively) and overly protective style (negatively).

Parenting a child affected by a disorder with vast consequences for functioning such as autism undoubtedly modifies the family’s situation and broadens the scope and essence of parents’ responsibility. Daily experiences connected with facing new, previously unknown, problems are not an easy challenge. On the other hand, they constantly enrich mothers’ awareness related to parenting. The aim of the research was to learn the significant problems, feelings, opinions and reflections arising from the experiences of mothers of children with autism spectrum disorders. The research material was collected through free-form interviews with 20 mothers raising autistic children. The analysis of the collected empirical material shows that mothers construct various concepts of parenting, including their own roles and everyday relations with the children. Their early reactions reveal the collapse of the previous vision of parenting and the loss of the real perspective concerning the perception of the child and their own role in child raising. Everyday parenting experiences – full of unique difficulties with building relationships with the children – allow the mothers to constructively seek individual solutions and patterns of coexistence.

Anger which is appearing in children, father isn’t guilty only mother – influence of the mother on raising one’s children in Polish printed funeral orations of the 17th century. In funeral orations, the fact of being a mother was underlined as the major merit of the dead. The number of children to whom she gave birth and whom she raised were mentioned with pride. So the motherhood constituted the main mission of the woman. Not only nursing children, but also forming their character and mind belonged to the responsibilities of women. A good mother, according to preachers, was supposed to be pious, sensible and hard-working. The Old Polish education ideal, in spite of social and material differences, had more than a class character. It concerned mainly girls, because they rarely expressed their opinion about their education and in less detail. It is possible to distinguish two types of educating women. The first one was called “conservative” and was supposed to prepare young girls for their future role of the wife, the mother and the housewife. The second was known as “progressive” as it recognized the equal status of the man and the woman and therefore she could develop intellectually. The daughters of magnates and rich gentry received their education in aristocratic manor houses or at convent schools, whereas poorer girls had to be satisfied with home upbringing. Nevertheless, irrespective of the place in which the girl received her education, she was prepared for her main practical role of the wife, the mother and the housewife.

Opis:
The implementation of socialism in North Korea required the large-scale involvement of women in economic relations. In order to align the rights of women and men in social life, the government pursued a policy of gender equality, conducting extensive advocacy among the female population aimed at a transformation of the understanding of women’s social roles and the nature of femininity. In the original context of women being encouraged to be workers and passionate contributors to the construction of the socialist state, the traditional stance on women as caring mothers and wives was supplemented with internationalist rhetoric on womanhood. However, with the transition to the Juche-oriented socialism, the discourse on women was modified, increasing the emphasis on motherhood and childrearing and reducing internationalism. Based on an analysis of the women’s magazine The Korean Woman (Joseon Nyeoseong), the present study analyses discourses on motherhood and childrearing in 21st century North Korea. The preliminary results of the research show that, while motherhood remains an essential component of the discourse on women, it is formulated in terms of building a powerful socialist state.

Job became decisive source income and social status of man and the central value of the company. In the article entitled “Experiencing late motherhood – biographies of women” the author deals with the medical, sociological and pedagogical aspects of “late motherhood” experienced by Polish women. Based on a qualitative study using the biographic method carried out through a narrative interview of four women and an analysis of two biographies published on Internet blogs, the author presents the motifs of late pregnancy, experiencing child birth, the ways of coping with several social roles of mother, wife and employee and the organisation of free time of young mature mothers. The deep bond with the child, self-realisation through motherhood and respecting a child’s needs by mature mothers were also analysed.

Background: Intrauterine fetal death is a potential risk in each stage of pregnancy, regardless of the mother’s age. In Poland in 2015, new standards of care were introduced for women with obstetric failure. Aim of the study: This study aimed to analyze intrauterine fetal demise in the context of late motherhood. Material and methods: Medical documentation and a semi-structured interview were used. Case report: A 41-year old primipara in 37 weeks of pregnancy, who had not felt fetal movements for 2 days, was diagnosed with intrauterine fetal demise. The pregnancy was uneventful before, but the patient suffered from hypertension and severe obesity. As a result of induced labor, a male neonate weighing 2260 g, 49 cm long, with no signs of vital functions, was born. After the birth, it was established that the child died due to an umbilical cord accident. The mother was given the appropriate time to see the child for the last time. During delivery and hospitalization, the patient’s privacy was ensured, she was isolated from other women in labor and new mothers and was assisted by her family. During the hospital stay, the patient was under the care of the obstetrician, midwife and clinical psychologist. She was discharged from the hospital after 6 days. Conclusions: The loss of a child is one of the most traumatic experiences for a mother, particularly in the case of older mothers. A woman’s fertility declines with age, so getting pregnant again might prove extremely difficult for older women.

Opis:
The figure of the single mother has played an important role in Japanese television drama over several decades. In the 1960s and 1970s, the figure of the single mother was often used to uphold traditional, patriarchal notions of family and gender, which stressed the importance of the mothers role in childrearing and running the household, and limited the role of women to the domestic sphere. However, as female participation in all areas of society has increased, and women have begun to question the assumption that marriage and motherhood are an essential part of their lives, so Japanese television drama has responded, reflecting and sometimes anticipating these changes. Today, single mothers in Japanese television dramas are actively rejecting patriarchal structures by forming women-only support networks or forging new identities as independent career women. However, very little academic attention has been paid to these representations. This paper hopes to make a small contribution towards rectifying this situation by analyzing the representations of single motherhood in contemporary television drama.
