Marianna Biernacka, called “blessed mother-in-law”, gave life for saving life of her daughter-in-law. Stanislawa Leszczynska was a midwife. She was receiving labors in the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz. Both women lived during the Second World War. They showed great kindness and piety. The aim of the article was to present the life histories of Marianna Biernacka and Stanislawa Leszczynska and the events that affected their beati-fication. In both cases their heroic acts became famous only decades after the war. The articleʼs message is clear: everyone can become a saint. The article was based on the available books about Marianna Biernacka and Stanislawa Leszczynska, which are few in the literature.

In the literary works of prominent Belarusian writer Yanka Bryl the on going theme is the subject of his mother. Through his own introspection and the collection of his life experiences, the writer talks about the character of his mother, her relationships with men, about death, and reaching the deeper meaning of life. The article examines the writer’s works in the book Птушю i гнёзды, novel У сям ’i, stories Разбуди меня завтра рано..., Сщежка-дарожка, Ты жывеш, За светлую памящь and also lyrical miniatures. Particular attention is paid to the development of the way Yanka Bryl shows and describes the individuality and persona of his Belarusian mother.

One of the most common clichés of our culture defines Judaism as the “religion of the Father.” For some this is just a neutral description referring to the fatherly aspect of the JewishGod; for others this is the very epitome of the patriarchal prejudice which privileges the masculine Father Figure at the expense of everything maternal. In my essay, however, I would like to challenge this staple association, by pointing to the simple fact that Jews themselves very rarely – if ever – describe their religion in openly patriarchal terms. In fact, when described in psychoanalytic terms, the role of the Father is here merely transitory: he is to inaugurate a series of subsequent detachments, starting from the disintegration of the first bonds of love (to maternal body and, more generally, to the body of nature) and ending with the complete neutralisation of the “family romance.” The Father Figure, therefore, is called upon only to counteract the power of the primordial “attachments” and initiate a process of separation which will allow the subject to establish himself as a free and mature moral agent, truly “born” into the world.

The primary purpose of this study was to explore the association between individuals’ attachments to their mothers and fathers, and their subsequent attachments to partners, based on research conducted in Slovenia. Participants in the empirical study were antenuptial couples who attended the premarital counselling course organized by and offered through the Franciscan Family Institute in Ljubljana, Slovenia. In order to explore more fully the concept of attachment, the authors of the study focused on the following dimensions: trust, communication and estrangement. The results of the study showed greater similarities in the three identified dimensions to the way in which both women and men experience attachment to their mothers and partners, while there were marked differences in the subjects’ experience of attachment to their fathers.

The mother/daughter bond is the central subject of Amy Tan’s two powerful books, The Joy Luck Club and The Bonesetter’s Daughter. Tensions that arise in the novels between a Chinese mother and her Chinese-American daughter are often described by the critics as being the result of two important factors. One is based on the misunderstandings caused by the generational gap, while the other comes from the cultural gap. For a Chinese-born mother the American reality instigates various confusions, as she still views her life with the eyes of her traditional Chinese upbringing. On the other hand, her daughter lacks any profound knowledge about her Chinese ethnicity, which makes her unable to recognize the influences of her mother’s Chinese past over their relationship. But in her novels Tan portrays also the relationship between the Chinese immigrant mother and her mother in China. Their relationship, which grew up exclusively on the grounds of the Chinese culture, is characterized by empathy and appreciation. In this paper I am going to discuss the change that occurred to the mother-daughter relationship after it has been replanted into a different cultural context. The line of argument will reveal in what ways the mother-daughter relationship underwent a significant transformation.

Communication in the Adolescent – Daughter and Mother and Communication with the peers of the same sex. Without a doubt relationship between Mother and Daughter is the most intense of all relationships. On the other hand, peers play a very important role in interpersonal relations during the period of adolescence. The purpose of the research was to determine the relation between the quality of communication between an adolescent daughter and the quality of communication with peers of the same sex. The data were collected from a sample of 138 female students aged 15 and 16. The researcher employed: Scale of Communication of Parents with Adolescents (PACS) and a sociometric questionnaire – Plebiscite of Kindness and Reluctance of Korczak. The initial results of the research indicate that the quality of communication between adolescent daughter and her mother is highly influenced by sociodemographic factors and communication with peers of the same sex depends on quality of relationships with mother.

The paper raises the problem of the child as the Great Other, who appears in the novels of Doris Lessing The Fifth Child and Kenzaburo Öe A personal matter. In both works coming into the world of the Other – a handicapped boy – puts to the test the moral foundations of the conservative society. Nobel Prize winners are making human vivisection that shall specifically examine the persistence of attitudes and values such as parenthood, love, responsibility, confidence in front of drastic Otherness. The child manifests its differences, can not cope in relations with the environment, for which it is something dangerous, threatening ordered hierarchy of the family. Scandal also cause parents responsible for the birth of the ,,monster”. In Doris Lessing novel mother is excommunicated from the patriarchal society, in the prose of Öe father is alone in the community in which he lives with his son. For the analysis of the text the theory of Julia Kristeva on disgust will be used. Categories of abject, semiotic-ness, ,,the stranger in me” will help answer the question – why the hyperactive boy (The Fifth Child) and a boy with cerebral hernia (A personal matter) cause scandal and fear.

This article aims to introduce the Polish public to the work of Angélica Liddell, one of the best-known faces of European theatre in recent years. While the artist has been professionally active since the late 1980s and has created (as a playwright, director and main actress) a few dozen original performances, for most of her stage life she has been saying the same thing: that the only truth worth knowing is the truth coming from our unconsciousness. And although there have been times in her career when she turned her attention to the outside and made political theatre, she eventually resumed probing the depths of the human psyche, where she traces repressed content with a verve that would make Freud himself proud. And, much to our bafflement, brings it out into the open.

In his book Rzeczy, których nie wyrzuciłem [Things I Didn’t Throw Out] Marcin Wicha, in a gesture of filial mourning, tries to reconstruct the portrait of hisdeceased mother by writing about the objects she has left. Starting from the material, he recreates the behaviours, views, and family memories of his mother, and saves from the oblivion the scenes that most fully reflect her complexity. Wicha’s book is also an expression of rebellion against the ready word formulas used in the face of death as it attempts to create a story that matches only one deceased person. Rzeczy, których nie wyrzuciłem corresponds with other “mourning texts” (works by Różewicz, Iwasiów, Barthes and Zagajewski) but thanks to the author’s skillful oscillation between individual life and general truths, pathos and irony, understatements and exposures, the personal and the literary – the book turns out to be an original example of writing about loss as it avoids banality and sentimentality.

Wprowadzenie. Wychowanie ojczyste dziecka, kształtowanie jego osobowości i zapewnienie mu wszechstronnego rozwoju to cele rodziców, którzy świadomie i racjonalnie wychowują swoje dzieci w warunkach emigracyjnych. Są to również cele każdej szkoły przedmiotów ojczystych w Wielkiej Brytanii. Zarówno założenia, jak i plany wychowawcze rodziców oraz szkół opierają się na ścisłym współdziałaniu. Problematyka badawcza niniejszego artykułu dotyczy form współpracy rodziców ze szkołami przedmiotów ojczystych w Londynie w zakresie wychowania ojczystego dzieci. Cel. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie różnorodnych form współpracy rodziców z polskimi szkołami przedmiotów ojczystych w Londynie oraz ukazanie roli rodziców w wychowywaniu dzieci w polskiej kulturze. Materiały i metody. Zastosowano metodę analizy dokumentów oraz metodę analizy i krytyki piśmiennictwa. Wyniki. Rezultatem przeprowadzonych badań jest przedstawienie różnorodnych form współpracy rodziców z polskimi szkołami przedmiotów ojczystych w Londynie, takich jak zarządzanie i kierownictwo placówką oraz działalność Kół Rodzicielskich. Ukazano rolę rodziców i ich zaangażowanie w wychowanie ojczyste młodego pokolenia Polaków które żyje w społeczeństwie angielskim, ale zna swoje pochodzenie, język, historię, geografię oraz jest dumne z polskich korzeni. Wnioski. Współpraca rodziców z polskimi szkołami przedmiotów ojczystych była i nadal jest bardzo ważnym elementem wychowania ojczystego polskiego dziecka. Rodzice na wiele sposobów angażują się w działalność polskich szkół sobotnich. Są członkami Komitetów Rodzicielskich, które organizują m.in. akademie szkolne, rozrywki dla dzieci, imprezy czy wycieczki, a także zbierają fundusze na utrzymanie tych placówek.
Introduction. In the parental upbringing of a child, shaping its personality and comprehensive development is the goal of parents who consciously and rationally bring up their children in immigrant conditions and the goal of every mother tongue school in Great Britain. Both the assumptions and educational plans of parents and the school are based on close cooperation. The research topic of this article concerns the forms of cooperation between parents and schools of Polish native subjects in London in the field of parental upbringing of a child. Aim. The aim of the article is to present various forms of cooperation between parents and Polish schools (supplementary/Saturday/community etc.) of the mother tongue in London and to show the role of parents in bringing up children in the Polish culture and tradition. Materials and methods. In order to implement the research problem, the method of document analysis and the method of analysis and criticism of the literature were used. Results. The result of the research is the presentation of various forms of cooperation between parents and Polish schools of native subjects in London, among others such as management and operation of the facility and the activities of Parent Circles. Showing the role of parents and their involvement in the native education of the young generation of Poles, who live in the English society, but know their origin, language, history, and geography, and are proud of their Polish roots. Conclusion. The cooperation of parents with Polish schools of native subjects was, and still is, a particularly important element of the native upbringing of a Polish child. Parents engage in the activities of Polish Saturday schools through various forms of cooperation that relate to managing the facility as well as engaging in the activities of the Parent’s Committee: in the organization of school academies, entertainment for children, events, trips, and fundraising for the maintenance of Saturday schools.

The aim of the study was to answer the question of how contemporary Polish women understand the role of mother and how this understanding refers to a theoretical model defined by Maria Ziemska. For this purpose, 35 indicators of parental attitudes were specified and then, reference to the discourses on motherhood publicized on the Internet through six blogs written by contemporary mothers, was made. Thanks to conducted analysis of maternal experience (published during one year), there were diagnosed not only the current reinterpretation of the ideas of perfect mother, but also the diversity of present-day parental attitudes of Polish women. Interpretation of results was based on Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis.
W niniejszym opracowaniu autorki próbują udzielić odpowiedzi na pytanie, jak współczesne Polki rozumieją rolę matki i czy to rozumienie odnosi się do teoretycznego modelu idealnej/dobrej matki określonego przez M. Ziemską. W tym celu wyszczególniono 35 wskaźników postaw rodzicielskich, po czym odniesiono się do internetowych dyskursów na temat macierzyństwa upublicznionych za pośrednictwem sześciu blogów prowadzonych przez współczesne matki. Dzięki przeprowadzonej analizie doświadczeń macierzyńskich (opublikowanych w ciągu roku) rozpoznano nie tylko aktualną reinterpretację wyobrażeń o matce idealnej, ale także różnorodność postaw rodzicielskich typowych dla współczesnych Polek. Interpretacji wyników dokonano w oparciu o Interpretacyjną Analizę Fenomenologiczną.

Opis:
Surrogacy is a tool to fulfil anyone’s need and yearning for a child. Next to adoption, it provides the only additional way to be a parent, opposite to adoption – it makes an individual capable of having a genetically related child. However, since the beginning of application of methods of artificial procreation and surrogacy itself in the 70s, 80s of the twentieth century, the need for regulation of surrogacy, the legality of the contract is still a source of controversies in courtrooms as well as in scientific discourse. Unfortunately, usually the consequence of a contract, even regarded as invalid, is childbirth. The discus- sion about surrogacy is therefore not only scientific in its nature – it refers to a living human being and his legal and family status. A few years ago I wrote about surrogacy in the US, in order to show the complexity of the problem in a country where there is a multiplicity of regulations – from its prohibition, through the lack of references in the law, to a clear, pronounced acceptance of contracts and surrogacy itself. FAS- Fetal Alcohol Syndrome - is a disease consisting in neurobehavioral incorrectness as well as some changes in internal organs. This incorrectness occur at these children whose mothers drank alcohol during pregnancy. The FAS-children, apart from numerous changes in a body build, have problems with notice concentration, communication, incompetence of solving problems as well as with a weak impulse control. Their growing difficulties result from injury to Central Nerve system. Implementation of prophylaxis for the women is very important. It has in view to limit drinking alcohol by the pregnant women. The prenatal care of the pregnant women and her child is carried on by specialist health service centre and anti-alcoholic clinics. My work aimed at representing and trating defects that occur at these children whose mothers drank alcohol during pregnancy. The representing of methods of prophylaxis for the alcohol drinking women and trating a post – natal care of the mother and her child was a very important element of the paper.
FAS czyli Płodowy Zespół Poalkoholowy to jednostka chorobowa obejmująca nieprawidłowości neurobehawioralne oraz zmiany w organach wewnętrznych. Nieprawidłowości te występują u dzieci, których matki spożywały alkohol w okresie ciąży. Dzieci z FAS oprócz licznych zmian w budowie ciała mają problemy z koncentracją uwagi, komunikowaniem się, nieumiejętnością rozwiązywania problemów oraz ze słabą kontrolą impulsów. Trudności rozwojowe, jakie występują u tych dzieci wynikają z powodu uszkodzenia Ośrodkowego Układu Nerwowego. Bardzo ważnym elementem jest wdrażanie profilaktyki wśród kobiet, która ma na celu ograniczenie spożywania alkoholu przez kobiety ciężarne. Opieka perinatalna nad kobietą ciężarną powinna być już prowadzona przed ciążą oraz podczas porodu. Natomiast opieka poporodowa nad kobietą i jej dzieckiem powinna mieć na celu zapewnienie kontaktów z ośrodkiem specjalistycznym i poradnictwem antyalkoholowym. Celem pracy było przedstawienie i omówienie problemów związanych ze spożywaniem alkoholu przez kobiety ciężarne oraz omówienie wad, jakie występują u dzieci, których matki spożywały alkohol w okresie ciąży. Kolejnym ważnym aspektem było przedstawienie metod profilaktyki wśród kobiet spożywających alkohol oraz omówienie opieki okołoporodowej nad matką i jej dzieckiem.

The paper presents how female migrants from the Opole region identify with their mothers, how different are their views of family and marital life, and what they would like to inherit from their mothers. The answers to these question are based on a number of women’s accounts of these issues and of the power of socialization. Sixty six interviews and letter diaries of female migrants have been analyzed in the paper. The presented research indicates that for most of the interviewed women their mother has been a strong role model of womanhood, but that they are different from their own mothers particularly in their perception and performance of the role of a woman. Although they admire their parents’ marriages, they do not always want to get married and cherish their marital relationships themselves. Taking up this role involves dilemmas. In the organization of social life Opole women expect their needs to be as important as those of men. They also hope for favorable circumstances under which they would have the chance of developing their full potential. Such wishes are especially characteristic of young women. Most female migrants attempt to expand their roles through labor market activity. Their migration, often caused by economic factors, has enabled them to feel active and needed.

The article analyzes and interprets a very important poem by Zbigniew Herbert – Mama from Struna światła (1956). While the work seems to deal with the poet’s personal experience, it can also be read as the universal human immersion in intimacy and separation. The very subtitle of the poem conveys its main assumption. Herbert depicts the relationship with mother as a specific conflict of expectations, in which love possesses and appropriates. The true affection requires approval for independence; unity – paradoxically – requires approval for otherness.

The picture of temporary maternity has different faces. This fact emerges from women and mothers stereotypes’ deconstruction, typically observed in post-modernism times. Contradicted personal expectations and general social pressure have an impact on the verity of life styles possible to think and realize. The goal of presented research was to find some factors which might have influenced the subjectively perceived life quality by women. It happened that the only factors that had impact on it were: the level of women’ education, the fact of having babies, the number of children and the sex of the first of them.

In the research paradigm focused on the stress-loaded functioning of single-mother families it has been observed that the efficiency of coping with stress depends on many factors, among which social support is one of the most important. Research results show that a higher level of social support is usually associated with more positive indicators of the functioning of an individual. On the basis of this assumption it was expected that social support provided by grandparents would be a significant predictor of mental resilience in adolescent grandchildren from single-mother families – also in conditions differentiated by household type: living with or without grandparents. Studies performed on a sample of 278 adolescents with the Berlin Social Support Scales (BSSS), the Adolescent–Peer Communication Scale, and the Resilience Measurement Scale (SPP-18) have shown that grandparental social support is not the only predictor of adolescents’ functioning.

Post-modernity has radically deformed the traditional ideas connected with entering the role of mother. Old ways of maternal initiation, passed from generation to generation, turned out to be inadequate. The aim of the research was to define socio-cultural factors that change defining and interpreting the key aspects of woman functioning in the first weeks after giving birth to a child. Basing on the gathered narrative interviews there were selected repetitive and subjectively meaning experiences creating the first period motherhood images. The free choice right experience and its psychological consequences, dilemma between natural and medical phenomena interpretation/ pregnancy, delivery, confinement and lactation/, emotional stress determinants or young mothers’ social perception were experience-creating elements of young women experiences. Pedagogical perspective in the analysis and interpretation of aspects connected with entering the role of mother may constitute a contribution in the approach to that present-day women’s life period, as well as in forming a social support for the motherhood.

Przedmiotem badania stały się jej wpisy z serwisu Facebook, wykorzystano analizę zawartości oraz wybrane narzędzia z zakresu retoryki – kategorię toposu oraz triadę etos, patos, logos. Zaobserwowano, że autorka korzysta w swoich publikacjach głównie ze strategii patosowych oraz etosowych, a propagowany przez nią model Mamy Zaopiekowanej stanowi – w wielu aspektach – opozycję dla toposu Matki Polki, w którym pomijano kwestię zdrowia psychicznego mam.
This article aims to explore how psychologist Aleksandra Sileńska, known online as Mom Therapist, addresses the mental health of mothers in her Facebook posts. Through content analysis and rhetorical tools, including the categories of topos and the triad of ethos, pathos, and logos, the study examines Sileńska’s communication strategies. The findings reveal that she predominantly employs pathos and ethos in her posts. Additionally, her promotion of the Cared-for Mom model contrasts sharply with the traditional Polish Mother topos, which often overlooks the mental health of mothers.

Wyniki: Rezultatem przeprowadzonych badań jest przedstawienie historii ponad 60-letniej działalności Polskiej Szkoły Przedmiotów Ojczystych im. T. Kościuszki w Londynie, jednej z największych szkół tego typu w Europie. Prezentacja różnych formy współpracy kadry pedagogicznej i rodziców w procesie wychowania narodowego i edukacji dzieci, której celem jest utrzymanie polskości, zapewnienie dzieciom i młodzieży podstaw języka polskiego, przekazanie wiedzy o historii i geografii Polski oraz wpojenie miłości do ojczyzny, jej kultury, tradycji oraz wychowanie młodego pokolenia. Wnioski: Wielką zasługą szkoły jest fakt wychowania kilku pokoleń młodych Polaków, urodzonych i wykształconych w Anglii, wrośniętych w społeczeństwo angielskie, ale świadomych swoich korzeni, swoich więzi z polskością i dumnych ze swojego pochodzenia. Szkoła poszerza horyzonty swoich wychowanków i pielęgnuje polskie tradycje, przekazuje dziedzictwo kulturowe, historię, język i religię, uczestnicząc w obchodach z okazji świąt narodowych, uroczystości patriotycznych, prelekcjach i wykładach historycznych. Wysoko wykwalifikowane grono nauczycielskie naucza języka polskiego, historii, geografii Polski i religii oraz wychowuje uczniów w duchu wiary katolickiej. Oddani swojej pracy rodzice, wchodzący w skład Zarządu Koła Rodzicielskiego, wspomagają pracę nauczycieli i kierownictwo placówki. Szkoła cały czas się rozwija i zapewnia uczniom i nauczycielom jak najlepsze warunki do osiągania kolejnych sukcesów.
Aim: The aim of the article is to present the history of the Polish Tadeusz Kosciuszko School of Homeland subjects in London and to draw attention to the roles of teachers and parents in upholding Polish tradition and culture in the education of Polish children and young persons in exile. Methods: In order to implement the research, a monographic method, criticism of the analysis of documents and previous literature in this area was applied. The techniques used included internal and external analysis of documents, qualitative and quantitative analysis and formal analysis of documents. Results: Presentation of various forms of cooperation between the teaching staff and parents in the process of national education and children’s education, the aim of which is to maintain Polishness, provide children and young persons with the basics of the Polish language, transfer knowledge about the history and geography of Poland and instil love for the homeland, its culture, traditions and the raising of the younger generation. Conclusions: The great merit of the school is the fact that several generations of young Poles, born and educated in England, enriched in English society, but aware of their roots, their ties with Polishness and proud of their origin, have been brought up. The school broadens the horizons of its pupils and cultivates Polish traditions, communicates cultural heritage, history, language and religion, takes part in celebrations on the occasion of national holidays, patriotic celebrations, lectures and historical lectures. A highly qualified teaching staff teaches the Polish language, history and geography of Poland and religion, and educates students in the spirit of the Catholic faith. Dedicated parents who are members of the Board of the Parental Association support the work of teachers and the management of the institution. The school continues to develop and provides the best possible conditions for students and teachers to achieve further successes.

Work mum empirical character and a roll of the emotional intelligence is regarding the moderating evaluation in the selection of the coping style stress of the single mothers. With theoretical base of the work joke “ability” of the Mayer’s and Soloveys Model Emotional Intelligence and the Endler’s and Parker,s concept of coping styles stress. In examinations 27 single mothers took part in the century 21-41 years old, disabled professionally, inhabiting Houses of Single Mothers and 40 mothers in the century 2640 years old, retreats of professionally active. To do the description of the intelligence an Test Emotional Intelligence (TIE) was used and to do evaluations of coping styles stress - Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS). They stated among others that professionally active single mothers more often used the sentence of coping styles stress, single mothers using the welfare much more often concentrate on the emotional and avoidance style.

The purpose of the study was to determine the relationships between grandparents’ support, communication with peers, and resilience among adolescents with single mothers. Also, the role of gender in the above-mentioned phenomena was looked at. The study was conducted using the Berlin Social Support Scales (BSSS), the proprietary Scale of Communication of Adolescents with Peers (SKAR); Resilience Measurement Scale SPP-18, as well as a personal survey. The sample included 145 adolescent girls and 137 boys. The results showed that, when it comes to communication with their peers, the participants of the study did not significantly differ from each other. The boys were significantly more resilient, while the girls seeked and received their grandparents’ support significantly more often. In both groups, significantly positive relationships were observed between resilience, grandparents’ support, and openness in communication with peers. This result is in opposition to the relationships with difficult communication. In conclusion, the gender of adolescents plays an important role in using resources and in shaping relationships with peers.

W artykule omówiono kwestie małej ojczyzny w kontekście twórczości poety i prozaika Józefa Barana. Jako materiał do analizy posłużył ostatnio wydany tom Borzęcin. Poezja i proza Józefa Barana (Borzęcin 2014). Autor, mimo iż niejednokrotnie deklaruje się jako twórca uniwersalny, jest mocno związany w swojej twórczości z miejscem urodzenia, stąd częste powroty do krainy dziedzictwa. Podstawowym wyznacznikiem tego świata jest dom rodzinny, ojciec, matka, krewni, przyroda, mitologizuje tę rzeczywistość, nadając jej nieraz wymiar kosmiczny. W konkluzji pada stwierdzenie, iż pisarz niezależnie w jakiej formie się wypowiada, zawsze pozostaje poetą.
The article describes the issue of small homeland in the context of the poet and prose-writer, Józef Baran. The analysis material comprised the newly issued volume entitled Borzęcin. Poezja i proza Józefa Barana (Borzęcin. Poetry and prose of Józef Baran) (Borzęcin 2014). The Author, despite calling himself an universal creator, he is strongly connected in his works to his birth place, hence the often returns to the heritage land. The basic determinant of this world is his family home, father, mother, relatives, nature, he mythologises this reality, giving it a cosmic aspect. In the conclusion there is a statement that the writer is a poet, not matter the form of expression.

Jedną z zasadniczych ról społecznych, jakie spełnia kobieta to rola matki. Wypełniając obowiązki opiekuńczo-wychowawcze wobec dziecka, kobieta realizuje się w roli macierzyńskiej, która rzutuje na szereg funkcji, które realizuje ona w swoim dorosłym życiu, jak i na proces kształtowania się jej tożsamości. W kulturze polskiej rola matki zawsze należała i należy do ról cenionych i ważnych. Postać Matki–Polki w tradycyjnym ujęciu skoncentrowana była na rodzeniu i wychowywaniu dzieci, co nadawało sens jej życiu. W dobie przemian społeczno-kulturowych, cywilizacyjnych i ekonomicznych XX i XXI wieku rola matki uległa zasadniczej zmianie. Kobiety zaistniały bowiem w tych obszarach życia, które były dotąd domeną mężczyzn. Zmieniła się ich świadomość, zwiększyła niezależność i poczucie autonomii i wolności osobistej, podwyższyła się także ich pozycja zawodowa. Zmiany te doprowadziły do ukształtowania się nowego wizerunku matki. Obecnie decyzje młodych kobiet o macierzyństwie są bardziej przemyślane. Kobiety odkładają też urodzenie pierwszego dziecka na późniejszy okres życia oraz decydują się na coraz mniejszą liczbę potomstwa. Współczesna matka nawiązuje też z dziećmi odmienne jak kiedyś relacje, co determinuje zmiany w zakresie funkcji wychowawczej. W artykule poruszona zostanie problematyka związana z przemianami roli matki. Zasadniczym celem rozważań będzie udzielenie odpowiedzi na pytanie: Jaka jest percepcja przemian roli matki przez młodzież akademicką?
One of the fundamental social roles which are fulfilled by a woman is the role of a mother. By meeting caring and educational duties a woman fulfils herself in the maternal role which influences a number of functions fulfilled by her in adult life, as well as the process of shaping her personality. In Polish culture the role of a mother has always been appreciated and considered significant. In a traditional approach the figure of the Polish Mother was concerned with giving birth to and raising children, which gave meaning to her life. In times of socio-cultural, civilizational and economic transformations of the 20th and 21st centuries the role of a mother has undergone a fundamental change. Women have begun to exist in aspects of life which had been reserved for men. Their awareness has been changed, their independence and the sense of autonomy and personal freedom has been increased. Moreover, their professional standing has been enhanced. As a consequence, these changes have led to the shaping of a new image of the term ‘mother’. Currently young women’s decisions about motherhood are more than ever wellthought-out. Women postpone their first childbirth and decide on a progressively smaller number of offspring. A contemporary mother establishes different kinds of relationships which determine the changes in terms of educational functions. The article discusses the issues related to the changes of the role of mother. The purpose of these reflections is to answer the question of what is the view of academic youth about these changes

Fairytale is an ancient literary genre which shows the important issues of life process. It is also an expression of man’s struggle between spiritual and material parts of life, which brings the image of the eternal conflicts, desires and aspirations of people. Fairytale seems to speak to a human language derived from ancient eras, and is the result of cultural heritage of mankind stored in human psyche. Heroes of fairytales are most often mortal men, experiencing adventure, rolling buoys, saving others. It’s true, using the language of myth, that heroes despite their imperfections gain power, treasure, or extraordinary powers. The metaphor of life way as a process in which suffering has an equal status as happiness, well-being is intertwined with evil, and fall walks after lifting, shows the way to the Whole man. Carl Gustav Jung, who was the creator of the concept of collective unconscious, believed that it contains elements specific to the entire humanity, independent of historical processes, either ethnic or cultural. He singled out the archetypes or primitive patterns of beliefs, ideas, patterns of living, experience, common to all men. Fairytale style reflects the complexities specific to each psyche. Integration of internal dark forces, birth of individuality, an internal process of growth, overcoming various conflicts and obstacles in the way of individuation are spiritual experiences which every man undergoes. Fairytale brings the opportunity to discover unconscious resources, which equip the fate of every human being and that s/he which consciously uses to build its standalone “I.” We are accustomed to see in fairytale a genre suitable only for children, which in addition to shaping imagination can overcome fears, integrate ignorance tame in terms of psychological or existential everyday experiences to build relationships with others. All of these components are elements of significant awareness of the potential in the development of small humans, but they are also important in achieving fully human adulthood. An adult is not different much from a child in terms of awareness. S/he is also familiar with the difficulties in coping with life, escapes from everyday life, playing down the sphere of the Shadow or the use of defensive mechanisms to avoid responsibility. But what is considered a child in the way of shaping identity in the life of an adult can have important consequences in forming of self-destruction or destruction. Therefore, it becomes important to understand the motivations of human activities, especially with regard to the integration of opposites by the construction of personality, and of how this path should be carried forward if it would lead to performance. It is important to a modern man to know how to play an important role in psychic sphere of his/her life and discover secrets of the unconscious. Then it is possible to find out that a diagnosis or “treatment” of suffering will no longer need any therapist. Fairytales of Hans Christian Andersen are among exceptional pieces. Gifted with extraordinary sensitivity, the author constructed the story of philosophy, which is characterized by great wisdom of life. You can tell that the writer with a thorough insight studied the problem of man’s place in the world, eyeing his/her dilemmas and being there. His observations were gathered in large collections, because this genre was probably the closest to him when it comes to transfer culturally established standards of ethical behaviour.

Introduction and aim. Parents of children who are addicted to technology have many problems in home care. This study aimed to describe the home care experiences of mothers of children with tracheostomies. Material and methods. The study adopted Husserl’s phenomenological method, a qualitative research design. The sample consisted of 23 mothers of children with tracheostomies followed up in the pediatric pulmonology outpatient clinic of a university hospital. All participants cared for their children at home. Data were collected using a sociodemographic questionnaire and a semi-structured interview questionnaire. All interviews were recorded and transcribed. Results. Children (12 girls and 11 boys) had a mean age of 3.43±3.326 years. The mean age of tracheostomy insertion was 2.8±2.508 years. Seventeen children were on ventilator support. All participants were mothers with a mean age of 32.34±6.00 years. Half the mothers had primary school degrees (52.2%). The interviews revealed one main theme (burnout), three subthemes (social isolation, perception of competence, and regrets), and five categories (burden of care, fear, awareness, decisions, and role confusion). Conclusion. Mothers of children with tracheostomies experience numerous problems when they provide home care. They mostly have difficulty improving themselves and enduring role confusion. We must address the issues mothers of children with tracheostomies face during home care to reduce the prevalence of potential complications and improve the quality of care for both them and their children.

The author of the paper provokes a substantive discussion with the Jehovah’s Witnesses’ stand, proving that the truth about Mary as the Mother of the Son of God is fully justified in the Holy Scriptures.

Polish woman‑centered symbolism has a specific dimension, which is depicted in the iconic ‘Polish Mother’ (Matka Polka). The iconic image is deeply rooted in Polish history and culture and it often refers to the mother of Jesus as she is expected to sacrifice her children for the motherland. As a woman, she realizes herself not only through motherhood but also in the service of her nation, and as such, she becomes a highly charged metaphor for both motherly love and patriotism. The ‘Polish Mother’ is a myth; a stereotype that has shaped the thinking of the nation for more than two centuries and is still largely in force. In contemporary literature (and also in various media texts and blogs) one can identify however, obvious attempts to re‑evaluate this very traditional iconic image. Especially motherhood, in Poland today, has gained a new dimension. I investigate some of the most characteristic aspects of the selected texts, focusing on the discrepancy between the old clichés and expectations and the subversion of traditionally defined motherhood in a modern society, which no longer takes the ‘Polish Mother’ at face value.

The aim of this article is to study the underpinnings of the matrixial theory introduced by Bracha L. Ettinger, and her installation in the Freud Museum – to be more precise, Freud’sstudy room – so as to examine their paradoxical status in Freudian‑Lacanian space(s). As I attempt to show, both parts of Ettinger’s activity are not against the Law of the Father, but rather they constantly dis‑obey his rules; Ettinger tirelessly endeavours to include the Mother alongside the paternal order. We thus observe not so much the rejection of Freud’s and Lacan’s paradigms as the movement on their boundaries and their subsequent transgression – and this may be seen as the greatest promise Ettinger provides us with.

From the second half of the 20th century, the issue of women’s writing has been of considerable interest in literary studies, highlighting the need to know women as writers and as literary subjects, in order to understand female experience first-hand. This approach to written texts is based on two fundamental aspects of study: women as writers and the representation of women in the text. This has made it possible to examine how women are represented and what topics women writers prefer, for example, motherhood, a literary topos par excellence in Italian literature. Despite this, although motherhood is present in numerous works, the voices of actual mothers are largely absent: mothers and motherhood are in fact narrated from the point of view of daughters. In view of that, there are two main aims of this study: (1) to examine the possible reasons for the absence of the mother’s point of view and (2) to analyze some contemporary Italian literarature narrated by mothers themselves.

Tematem artykułu jest ekspertyzacja macierzyństwa w mediach. Omówiono zagadnienie wzrostu znaczenia ekspertów w społeczeństwach ponowoczesnych zastępujących tradycyjnych liderów opinii, intelektualistów, naukowców. Wymienione zostały wymiary ekspertyzacji macierzństwa, m.in. asymetria w relacji matki i dziecka, asymetria w relacji matki i eksperta, asymetria w relacji wiedzy osobistej i wiedzy eksperckiej, instrukcje eksperckie, brak kwalifikacji i umiejętności matek w pełnieniu roli matki. Poszczególne wymiary omówiono w oparciu o dyskurs ekspercki o macierzyństwie w programie „I Ty możesz mieć superdziecko”.
The theme of the article are expertisation of the motherhood in the media. It is a study about the issue of the growing importance of experts in the postmodern societies, which replaces the traditional opinion leaders, intellectuals and scientists. The author refers to the dimensions of expertisation of the motherhood including the asymmetry in the relationship of a mother and a child, the asymmetry in relations between a mother and an expert, the asymmetry in the relationship between personal knowledge and expertise knowledge, instructions of experts, the lack of qualifications and skills of mothers in their role of a mother. The dimensions are discussed on the basis of the discourse of experts about motherhood in TV-programm ”I Ty możesz mieć superdziecko”.

The author presents Marina Tsvetaeva’s musical and synaesthetic space on the basis of My Mother and Music, her autobiographical essay. Synaesthesia, although present in the life of Tsvetaeva as a young child and adult poet, is not especially depict-ed in this particular piece of work. The writer chose her memories which encompass a significant period of time from her birth to her 42nd birthday as her main narrative focus. The musical sphere of the young child was presented through the piano and its attributes (the keyboard, pedals, music stand, metronome, notes, piano stool), which were a source of various – both positive and negative – experiences for this sensitive girl. Marina Tsvetaeva’s mother, unfulfilled as a pianist, undoubtedly played a toxic role in her musical education. Maria Tsvetaeva “drowned and killed her daughters with music”, making them feel an organic resistance towards required physical and mental efforts far too great for their age. The situation changed after her mother’s death when Marina could pour all her love for music into incredibly original lyric poetry, becoming one of the greatest writers of the 20th century.

In view of the fact that issues related to the family in the literary works of Stanisław Wawrzyniec Staszic are far less known than his socio-political views or his opinions about education, the author of this paper decided to creatively explore this treasure of Polish culture. The results of this study may significantly enhance the educational resources of sub-disciplines of teaching like familial teaching, the history of upbringing, the theory of upbringing and general teaching. Quoting from Stanisław Staszic, the author provides answers to several research issues, namely how Staszic perceived the family and what tasks (and missions) he assigned to family members, the parents and the offspring; the types of primeval families he identified (using the criterion of the law of nature); the role that he assigned to families with respect to the integration of mankind, the integration of a nation, and Poland regaining independence; the factors which, in his opinion, were the main obstacles to families undertaking historical tasks (including Polish families). In order to define these issues, the author of this paper used hermeneutic methods to interpret the literary output of Stanisław Staszic, revealing in the process the philosopher’s views on the family, its tasks, functions and the roles of its members, with special emphasis placed on the mother, father and the offspring. An analysis of the types of families in the initial phases of the existence of mankind was another effort worth making together with considering the obstacles that families encounter when carrying out their historical tasks

The basis for the research was transcripts of 24 hours of monthly video recordings of three mothers speaking to their infants (for a period of eight months in each mother–infant dyad). In the frequency lexicon compiled from the mothers’ speech, the 20 most frequently used words were “be,” “right,” “well,” “self,” “yes,” “go,” “you,” ‘this,” “and,” “what,” “give,” “still,” “here,” “well,” “have,” “already,” “on,” “there,” “want,” and “where,” which underline the situational nature of mothers’ topics (“this,” “here,” “still,” “already,” “what,” and “where”) and their positive attitude towards the child (“right,” “yes,” “you,” and “well”). Moreover, the most often used nouns were the proper names of the infants in the diminutive form and an appellative “mom”; the most frequent adjectives were “little,” “good,” “big,” “pretty,” “beautiful,” and “clever,” while the most frequent adverbs were “nicely,” “beautifully,” and “well done.” Many of these words show a supportive and encouraging manner of infant-directed speech from mothers in infants’ preverbal stage of development.

Life experience and narrative identity Narrative identity is a story about one’s biography. The story is composed with a use of interpretative schemas, which are provided by the culture. The story changes, when a person passes an important experience. It can change in a typical way, if the experience is typical, because culture offers particular set of possible interpretations of typical human experiences. A spectacular example of that phenomenon is the change of a story about one’s mother, when a woman becomes a mother herself (what is illustrated by conducted research). 50 woman married no longer then 4 years, were asked to tell a story about their mothers. Half of them have got one child (no older then 3 years), a second half have no children yet. Narratives were compared. Stories told by young mothers differ from childless’ women’s in many aspects, especially in paying attention to mother’s relations with others. Women, who have no children, speak of mother’s individual activities (her behavior, work, childhood etc). An experience of motherhood, as can be observed, changes the way the person perceives previous experience. It indicates that the narrative identity is not an agenda of the life events, it is rather a structure of the event’s interpretations – the interpretation constructed in terms of the general schema of meanings or, in other words, the general idea of one’s life.

This article analyzes three hybrid narratives – Sylvie Gracia’s Le livre des visages (2012), Pascal Quignard’s Les ombres errantes (2002), and Hélène Cixous’s Hyperrêve (2006). Although their hybridity can be found at different levels, such as the generic level, or the lexical level, all three texts attempt to catch the Mother in their narrative subterfuges in order to bring her back to life (or in the case of Cixous, to keep her alive), in vain. In the process, the authorial voice is reinforced as the voice leading the reader through narrative transgressions.

By considering three works of Primo Levi, Elsa Morante, and Fulvio Tomizza, this analysis aims to investigate some examples of composite and paradoxical identities. Regarding the matter in question, I will examine cases in which the elements shaping the subjects, especially language, will be discordant with the proposed identity. In Primo Levi’s La tregua, the author seeks to account his Jewish belonging, despite his lack of knowledge of Yiddish. Morante investigates the troubled linguistic identity of Aracoeli’s protagonist, while the extreme hybridism of Stefano in Tomizza’s L’albero dei sogni allows remarkable forms of estrangement to surface. Thanks to the support of identity theorists such as Baumeister and Chambers, and of theorists of the monolingual/plurilingual condition such as Fishman and Lepschy, I will employ a more fluid notion of identity in order to contemplate different variables and solutions, which may lead to contradictions. These three authors can, therefore, be considered forerunners of recent literary studies on migration, which deal with the impellent necessity to remove the limits imposed by strict definitions of identity.
Prendendo in considerazione tre opere di Primo Levi, Elsa Morante e Fulvio Tomizza, quest’analisi si propone di indagare alcuni esempi di identità composite e paradossali. Nella fattispecie verranno esaminati casi in cui le componenti formanti l’identità del soggetto, tra cui in primis la lingua, risulteranno discordanti rispetto all’identità dichiarata. Ne La tregua di Primo Levi, l’autore cercherà di render conto della sua appartenenza ebraica, nonostante la mancata conoscenza dell’yiddish; la Morante si addentrerà nella travagliata identità linguistica del protagonista di Aracoeli, mentre l’ibridismo esasperato di Stefano de L’albero dei sogni tomizziano farà emergere marcate forme di straniamento. Grazie al supporto di alcuni teorici del tema dell’identità, tra cui Baumeister e Chambers e del monolinguismo/plurilinguismo, quali Fishman e Lepschy, sarà possibile far emergere un concetto di identità più fluido, in grado di contemplare molteplici variabili e soluzioni, non esenti talvolta da contraddizioni. I tre autori possono quindi considerarsi degni anticipatori dei recenti studi letterari sulla migrazione, che hanno sempre più a che fare con l’impellente necessità di rimuovere i limiti imposti da definizioni identitarie rigide.

This paper offers an analysis of (prevalently feminine) curses which come to being within the text of the epic songs. This specific form of cursing is particularly pointed in the curses by mother’s milk. Both in tradition and in the epics, these curses are equal to taboo, which means that nobody dares disobey them: such is the deep belief in their efficiency. Because there is no discrimination in the epics about who can or cannot make a curse (everybody can: narrator/singer, protagonists, antagonists, heroes and their foes, messengers, mothers, wives, godmothers, sisters, brothers, fairies, forests, etc.), focusing on the parental and lovers’ curse is necessary for the sake of congruence. This will  help in spotting the interactive patterns in the structure of epic songs more accurately. The analysis is done on the corpus of approximately 1500 epic songs described at the end of this paper.

Celem artykułu jest ukazanie jak skazane kobiety‑matki w warunkach izolacji penitencjarnej wypełniają powinności związane z realizowaniem funkcji macierzyńskiej. Artykuł prezentuje badania, które przeprowadzone zostały w 2007 roku w przywięziennym Domu Matki i Dziecka w Grudziądzu. Badaniami objęto 11 kobiet. Problemem głównym postawionym przed badaniami była odpowiedź na pytanie: Jak wygląda codzienne realizowanie obowiązków macierzyńskich w warunkach więziennych? Kobiety z powodu specyfiki sytuacji, w której się znajdują, są poddane głębszej kontroli społecznej, a zachowania odbiegające od standardów i ogólnie przyjętych wzorców są surowo oceniane i poddawane negatywnym sankcjom przez współosadzone, jak również przez personel penitencjarny.
A purpose of the article is showing as sentenced women – mothers in conditions of the penitentiary isolation, fill up duties associated with carrying out the motherly function. The article is presenting examinations which were taken in 2007 in the House of the Mother and the Child in Grudziądz. This house is a part of the women’s prison. 11 women were examined. The main problem which was presented before the examinations was getting the answer to the a question: What does everyday carrying out motherly duties look like in prison conditions? Women because of the specificity of the situation in which they are are subjected to the deeper social inspection, and behaviours running away from standards and widely accepted models severely are being assessed and subjected to negative sanctions by co‑settled, as well as by the penitentiary staff.

The purpose of this study is to investigate how the past experiences of mothers and their potentially traumatic events during pregnancy may have influenced the processes of psychobiological self-regulation and cognitive development in a child born preterm. Eighty children who had a gestational age of < 32 weeks were examined at the 9th month of the corrected age. The mothers and children were divided in two groups: multipara mothers and their children and the primipara mothers and their children. These children were examined on the basis of sleep disorders, nutritional problems and mental development. Perinatal data from clinical observations and data from standardized developmental tests (BSID, II ed.) were used to describe the differences. The children of primipara mothers who had unexpected preterm delivery presented major incidences of sleep disorders while the children of primipara mothers, who programmed preterm delivery, presented a major incidences of nutrition problems. The predictability of preterm delivery has a major influence on the capacity of newborns for self-regulation in the case of primipara mothers.

Autor interpretuje teksty Agnieszki Graff Matka feministka, Rachel Cusk Praca na całe życie. O początkach macierzyństwa i Małgorzaty Łukowiak Projekt matka. Niepowieść, wykorzystując metodologie badań postkolonialnych. W ten sposób odpowiada na pytania dotyczące budowania/konstruowania podmiotowości matki i próby ich zapisu wykorzystujące formę felietonu, publicznego odczytu, eseju, bloga.
The reading of three contemporary texts concerning maternity became the basis for searching for the answers to the following questions: how the autobiography of a mother might be written nowadays and why women choose this genre – what is the aim of fitting these texts into autobiography. The author interprets the texts of Agnieszka Graff (Matka feministka), Rachel Cusk (Praca na całe życie. O początkach macierzyństwa) and Małgorzata Łukowiak (Projekt matka. Niepowieść) and uses the methodology of postcolonial research. In this way the author tries to answer the questions. These questions, included in journals, public appearances, essays or blogs, concern building/constructing subjectivity of mother.

Opis:
Communication with single parent of the same sex was assessed by 64 daughters and 66 sons by using the Parent-Adolescent Communication Scale (PACS). Analysis between parent’s socio-demographic characteristics and their families has showed that mothers with higher education were assessed by daughter as the most communicative and their openness was conditioned by age of adolescents and amount of siblings. In pairs father-son, increase of boys’s age causes open communication in families of younger fathers.

Opis:
In the second half of the 19 century appeared periodicals addressed to women, in which discussion on the place and role of the woman in society and family was raised. Among the most readable and representing relatively high level were found periodicals 'Niewiasta' and 'Kalina'. Most of the articles published in those periodicals were devoted to mother, as the first educator and teacher of her children. From the analysis of the works emerges a picture of a caring mother, providing safety and development of her children, bringing up children in the spirit of patriotism and love of God, as well as aspiring to educate her offspring to be citizens and members of the polish society. Principally attention was focused on the role of mother in upbringing daughters. It was clearly pointed out, that it was the mother whom the future of her children depended on. The aim of the maternal influence was to form a person possessing numerous virtues and abilities essential to become a good wife, mother and housewife. The mother was moreover supposed to be an inseparable companion of her children, their support in troubles as well as mentor introducing young generation into the vortex of national, social and family life.
