Opis:
The newly obtained data supplemented our knowledge about risk for travellers, tourists and natives of Europe connected with malaria, leishmaniasis and other tropical diseases. It was discovered that healthy carriers of Epstein-Barr virus (nearly 90% of human population) have a great risk to get chronic Burkitt lymphoma disease as a result of Plasmodium falciparum (tropical malaria agent) infection. HIV carriers being occasionally in contact with visceral leishmaniasis vectors (sand-flies infected on dogs in the Mediterranean area) not only got a heavy form of disease but became a source of infection for healthy people. Airport malaria and outbreaks of dengue fever sometimes were (and are) connected with an import of infective Anopheles or Aedes mosquitoes. The high risk of borreliosis and ehrlichiosis infection exists in the forested European areas along the highways, where picnics and other types of recreation of travellers and tourists are typical and where the anthropogenically changed Ixodes ticks subpopulations are distributed. Such physiologically changed part of tick population is more aggressive and «changed ticks» more often are vectors of one, two or even more agent species simultaneously.

Opis:
The study of tree-hole breeding mosquitoes was carried out in the tropical rainforest of Imo State Nigeria (two rural areas and two forest reserves in some parts of Orlu Senatorial Zone) between May – October 2002. Using standard entomological procedures, two macrohabitats (natural tree-holes and bamboo traps) and two microhabitats (leaf axils of cocoyams/pineapples and leaf axils of plantain/banana) were sampled for various mosquito species. Mosquitoes were recovered from all the various biotypes sampled. Types of mosquitoes species encountered, their relative abundance, as well as genera varied signifi cantly during the study (p<0.05). Four genera of mosquitoes: Aedes, Culex, Anopheles and Toxorhynchites were recovered while 16 species of mosquitoes encountered include: Aedes aegypti, Ae. africanus, Ae. simpsoni, Ae. albopictus, Ae. stokesi, Ae. taylori, Ae. apicoargenteus, Culex quinquefasciatus, Cx. nebulosus, Cx. trigripes, Cx. decens, Anopheles gambiae, An. funiestus, An. coustani and Toxorhynchites viridibasis. Most of the mosquitoes showed oviposition preferences for one or more habitats. The presence of Ae. africanus, Ae. simpsoni and Ae. aegypti indicate that the study areas were at risk of yellow fever epidemic. The presence of Anopheles and Culex species ensured endemicity of malaria and fi lariasis, while the recovery of Ae. albopictus in this region suggests a possible outbreak of dengue fever in future if not properly controlled.

Opis:
The binding of TMOF to its gut receptor was followed by incubating guts removed from male and female Aedes aegypti. TMOF at physiological concentrations, in the presence of [γ32P]ATP, causes phosphorylation and release of gut-membrane protein (45 kDa) that is further processed by proteolysis. In the presence of protease inhibitors only the 45 kDa protein was released. The phosphorylation and processing of the 45 kDa protein does not happen in the absence of TMOF. Both larvae and adult guts release the protein in the presence of TMOF. Male Ae. aegypti do not synthesize trypsin in their gut and do not release the 45 kDa protein in the presence of TMOF because a TMOF receptor is probably absent. Homogenized guts do not release the 45 kDa protein, indicating that the protease processing or the ecto-protein kinase activity is probably reduced after breaking the tissue. The 45 kDa phosphorylated protein can be dephosphorylated by alkaline phosphatase and protein phosphatase, indicating that the phosphate group is covalently linked to either a serine or a tyrosine moiety. This is the first report that shows that in insects, binding of a peptide hormone activates its receptor by proteolysis.

Opis:
Based on the 3D conformation of the N-terminus of TMOF in solution, six aromatic derivatives of enoic acid: 7-biphenyl-4-yl-hept-4-enoic acid (BPHE), 7-(4-butyl-phenyl)-hept-4-enoic acid (BuPHE), 7-cyclohexyl-hept-4-enoic acid (CyHE), 10-phenyl-dec-7-enoic acid (PDE), 7-p-tolyl-hept-2-enoic acid ethyl ester (THEEE) and 7-(4-methoxy-phenyl)-hept-2-enoic acid ethyl ester (MPEEE) were computer-modeled and synthesized. Treating first instar Aedes aegypti larvae with different concentrations of the TMOF mimics showed that addition of butyl to the benzyl ring, use of p-tolyl or converting the benzyl ring into cyclohexane increased the biological activity of the mimics by 5.2, 5.0 and 3.8-fold, respectively. Esterifying the carboxyl terminus into ethyl ester and addition of a methoxy group to the benzyl ring also increased, by 2-fold, the biological activity of the derivative. The position of the double bond in the aliphatic chain is important for enhanced biological activity. Aea-TMOF and CyHE fed to mosquito larvae equally inhibited trypsin biosynthesis in larvae for the first 24 h. The biological activity of CyHE, however, rapidly declined 2-3 days later, whereas TMOF activity stayed stable. These results indicate that TMOF organic mimics, although potent, need to be formulated in order to be more stable for future field applications.

Opis:
Application of remote sensing and other GIS methods in the subject of mapping mosquito breeding sites has not been premised accordingly. Despite the facts that the duration of field surveys would be shortened and the effectiveness of action plans would be higher with the supportance of computer modelling techniques. This work aimed to evaluate the applicability of digital elevation models and aerial photographs in the prediction of mosquito breeding sites. Relief analysis was carried out seeking depressions based on elevation models created with TIN and kriging interpolation methods. Spectral analysis was performed on aerial photographs to identify the patches of higher water content or moisture. The results show that terrain analysis can not give acceptable results due to its resolution and accuracy. Spectral analysis of normal (visible range) photographs can be a useful tool in predicting of breeding sites. On grasslands the verificitaion revealed 91% correct results.
