We describe a new primitive proboscidean, Daouitherium rebouli gen. et sp. nov., from the early Ypresian of the Ouled Abdoun Basin, Morocco, which also yielded Phosphatherium. It is the earliest known large mammal from Africa and one of the oldest known proboscideans. It has true lophodont molars similar to those of Barytherium and Numidotherium. It is closer to these genera and more advanced than Phosphatherium (e.g., morphology of the mandible), but it is also primitive in striking features known also in Phosphatherium (absence of diastema, retention of two additional teeth in front of p2). A parsimony analysis of Daouitherium suggests its intermediate phylogenetic position between the basal, small Phosphatherium and the large, more derived Numidotherium and Barytherium. Daouitherium is a better candidate for the ancestry of N. koholense than Phosphatherium, but it is also specialized. Daouitherium and Numidotherium may belong to the same basal radiation of “Barytherioidea”. However, the family referral of Daouitherium is uncertain (Numidotheriidae?). The discovery of such a large and derived proboscidean with respect to Phosphatherium in the same African beds of such antiquity is evidence of an unexpected early diversity of proboscideans and of the old origin of the order. It also supports the African origin of Proboscidea s.s.

Predatory dinosaur (Theropoda) teeth are described from Khouribga near Casablanca (Ad-Dar al-Bajda) in northern Morocco. A morphological study of specimens shows that two teeth represent the family Spinosauridae. A third tooth shows features characteristic of the genus Carcharodontosaurus. These are the first finds of dinosaurs from Khouribga.

Opis:
Latest Frasnian trilobites are recorded for the first time from North Africa. They occur in oxygenated limestones between the Lower and Upper Kellwasser horizons at Bou Ounabdou near Mrirt, central Moroccan Meseta. The faunas are very close to the contemporaneous associations in European sections both by their taxonomic composition and by patterns of evolutionary behavior towards eye reduction. Two new taxa are described: Gondwanaspis mrirtensis gen. et sp. nov., which is the last known representative of the Odontopleuridae before its extinction at the base of the Upper Kellwasser horizon, and Pteroparia ziegleri maroccanica subsp. nov., a geographical variant of the nominal subspecies from Sessacker in the Rhenish Slate Mountains.

A third albanerpetontid genus, Anoualerpeton gen. nov., is erected for two new species: An. unicussp. nov. (type species) from the Early Cretaceous (Berriasian) of Morocco and An. priscus sp. nov. from the Middle Jurassic (late Bathonian) of England. Anoualerpeton differs from the exclusively Laurasian albanerpetontid genera Albanerpeton (Early Cretaceous– Paleocene, North America; Miocene, Europe) and Celtedens (?Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous, Europe) in a unique combination of primitive and derived character states of the jaws and azygous frontals. Monophyly of Anoualerpeton is supported by two synapomorphies of the maxilla and dentary (occlusal margin convex in labial outline and teeth strongly heterodont in size anteriorly) that are convergent with an unrelated, relatively derived Late Cretaceous species of Albanerpeton from North America. The two species of Anoualerpeton differ in character states of the premaxilla and azygous frontals. Cladistic analysis of 20 characters scored for ten albanerpetontid taxa postulates Anoualerpeton as the sister−taxon of Albanerpeton + Celtedens. The sister−pair of Albanerpeton + Celtedensis founded on one or, perhaps, two premaxillary synapomorphies. Anoualerpeton unicus documents the only known Gondwanan occurrence for the Albanerpetontidae and provides a minimum age of basal Cretaceous for the establishment of the clade in Africa. Characters of the mandible, vertebrae, and limbs support the interpretation that Ramonellus (Aptian; Israel) is a caudate, not an albanerpetontid.

Three new multituberculate teeth are described from the Early Cretaceous of Morocco. Denisodon moroccensis gen. et sp. nov. is established for a second lower molar which differs from that of Hahnodon taqueti, from the same locality, by a preserved posterior buccal cusp, a smaller posterior lingual cusp and the less indented lingual wall of the crown. The second tooth is a posterior upper premolar. It is represented by the posterior portion of its crown on which is present only one row of cusps, similar to the conditions in Kielanodon, Eobaatar, Bolodon, and the Pinheirodontidae. The third tooth is a lower incisor, similar to that in Kuehneodon. Both teeth are grouped as „Hahnodontidae, gen. et sp. indet.” Paulchoffatioidea new superfamily is established for the Paulchoffatiidae, Hahnodontidae, and Pinheirodontidae. It is characterized by the following autapomorphies: premolarisation of I2−C, presence of a third row of cusps on the posterior upper premolars and the basin−like structure of the m2. Hahnodontidae and Hahnodon are redefined.

The genus Dzieduszyckia is especially well represented and diverse in the Famennian strata of the Middle Atlas, Morocco. In this paper we re−study and re−illustrate the rich collection of Dzieduszyckia from Morocco, described by Henri and Genevive Termier, and originally referred to Halorella or Eoperegrinella. New data on the internal shell structure of D. crassicostata, D. intermedia, and D. tenuicostata indicate great intraspecific variability in morphology. The structure of crura of three studied species demonstrates that subfamily Dzieduszyckiinae is better placed within the family Halorellidae, instead of Peregrinellidae. Type specimens (lectotypes) of the three species were also selected. An analysis of the stable isotopes of carbon and oxygen of the shell material of Dzieduszyckia and carbonate sediment was used to investigate the presumed chemosynthetic nature of its paleoenvironments. The analyses of the Moroccan and Polish material do not show any signature of unusual environmental conditions: they fall in the range of the mean values of δ¹³C for the Late Devonian.

An early Late Tournaisian (Early Carboniferous/Mississippian) ammonoid fauna is described from the Tafilalt of south−eastern Morocco. Twelve genera, four of which are new, and eleven new species are represented: Becanites africanus sp. nov., Triimitoceras epiwocklumeriforme gen. et sp. nov., Irinoceras minutum sp. nov., Muensteroceras quadriconstrictum sp. nov., Eurites bouhamedensis sp. nov., Ouaoufilalites ouaoufilalensis gen. et sp. nov., Helicocyclus fuscus sp. nov., Pericyclus mercatorius sp. nov., Orthocyclus(?) sp., Bouhamedites enigmaticus gen. et sp. nov., Winchelloceras antiatlanteum sp. nov., and Progoniatites maghribensis gen. et sp. nov. Palaeogeographic analysis of Late Tournaisian ammonoid assemblages shows strong endemism at the species−level, but genera and families had a nearly global distribution in the equatorial seas. The new fauna contains the stratigraphically oldest known representatives of the important Carboniferous goniatite families Girtyoceratidae and Goniatitidae.

Unique monospecific assemblages of small, solitary, nondissepimented rugose corals from the Devonian deep−sea hydrothermal venting systems of the Hamar Laghdad (Anti−Atlas, Morocco) are described. Assemblages of numerous rugosans (coral meadows) have been found around the outlets of venting channels irregularly forked within the Emsian mud mound sediments. The majority of rugose corals, which settled around vents, reveal a bizarre pattern of growth called here “calice−in calice”. The phenomenon of “calice−in−calice” growth is related to selective survival of coral larvae i.e. it is postulated that the larvae, which settled within the calices of dead individuals were more successful in their development than those that settled elsewhere. They probably use empty calices as shelters against the physical (hot or poisoning fluids) or biological (predators) factors. The empty calices also provided a hard surface for attachment. The presence of numerous carapaces of ostracods within the calices of dead rugosans suggests a strong trophic relation between corals and ostracods, which lived around hydrothermal vents. The new genus and species Hamarophyllum belkai is proposed.

A new genus and species belonging to Dyrosauridae, Arambourgisuchus khouribgaensis, from the Thanetian (Palaeocene) of Morocco, is erected. Two more or less complete skulls and three mandibular fragments enable a reconstruction of the anatomical characteristics of this species. Dyrosaurid systematics is mainly based on mandibular characters. The comparison of this new material with several dyrosaurid species previously known provides new systematic data for this group. The width of the interfenestral bar, the shape and development of the occipital tuberosities and the shape of the supraoccipital and the basioccipital are of particular importance. A phylogenetic analysis of the dyrosaurids provides an outline of the relationships between the best known species. Chenanisuchus lateroculi is the most primitive dyrosaurid. Sokotosuchus ianwilsoni and Phosphatosaurus gavialoidesform a clade, more closely related to other dyrosaurids than to Chenanisuchus lateroculi. The relationships between Arambourgisuchus, Rhabdognathus, Congosaurus, and Hyposaurus are unclear, and the two latter taxa remain too poorly known to provide an uncontested phylogenetic result. The dyrosaurids are known from nearly all continents. The phylogenetic results suggest a North African range for basal members, and the wide distribution of Rhabdognathus and Hyposaurus confirms the possibility of transoceanic dispersal of these taxa. Unfortunately, many dyrosaurids are insufficiently known to be included in the analysis, and the present analysis considers mainly African forms. A better knowledge and the inclusion of other taxa from other geographic regions should significantly improve and modify the hypothesis.

The geographic distribution and occurrence conditions of Juniperus thurifera subsp. africana in Morocco were studied. The literature and herbaria data, together with field observations formed the basis of detailed maps of distribution of the species in the Middle and High Atlas and allow us to analyze its vertical distribution. The taxon occurs in the sub-arid and arid zones of the Middle and High Atlas with a separate population in the Anti-Atlas, mostly between altitudes 2000 and 2700 m, with an altitudinal maximum at 3400 m and a minimum at 1700 m. It forms forests in the area of about 30 000 ha. In many places of the High Atlas it is the only wood source for local populations. It is strongly endangered because of over exploitation of the wood, over pasturing and lack of seedlings and young specimens.

Abundant trilobite remains were recovered from late mid−Famennian marlstones from various sites in Eastern Tafilalet, southeast Morocco. All belong to a single taxon previously identified as Cyrtosymbole (Waribole) prima. This taxon is designated the type species of Osmolskabole gen. nov. A redefinition of this species, including the description of newly discovered, disarticulated exuviae both in limestone and silicified state of preservation, is given. In particular, silicified sclerites of various sizes allow the first complete growth series of a cyrtosymboline proetid to be presented. The close morphological resemblance of its protaspid stages to known proetoid larvae emphasizes the homogeneity of the early ontogeny in this superfamily. The Famennian proetoid anaprotaspis is also of comparable size to that of other Devonian proetoid larvae. However, their size−range is much less than that observed in Carboniferous larvae. This suggests that the survival of proetoid trilobites at the Frasnian−Famennian Kellwasser crisis did not result from a modification of the developmental strategy, as it might have been the case at the terminal Devonian extinction event. Moreover, O. prima possesses a plectrum from the metaprotaspid to the mid meraspid periods. This implies that the natant hypostomal condition is not steadily acquired early in the ontogeny of the Proetida. Thus we preclude the use of this character in the diagnosis of this order.

In the Early to Middle Devonian shale sequences of Germany and Morocco, pyritised and secondarily limonitised cephalopod remains are common. Details of the soft−tissue attachment structures are sometimes preserved on the internal moulds of the body chamber and phragmocone of these cephalopods. Some of the studied Orthocerida show a very faint annular elevation and a dorsal furrow. A few Bactritida show a distinctive annular elevation with two circular bands. The bands form a paired or threefold lobe at the dorsum of the shell. Morphological differences between Orthocerida and Bactritida suggest different soft part morphologies. A comparison of the attachment scars shows that the Bactritida are intermediate between the Orthocerida and ammonoids with regard to their muscle attachment scars. The shape of the muscle scars are interpreted as indication for a planktonic lifestyle in Orthocerida and a comparatively active, nektonic lifestyle in Bactritida and ammonoids. The new genus Acanthomichelinoceras is erected. Acanthomichelinoceras commutatum, Cycloceras sp., Bactrites gracile, Bactrites sp. A, Bactrites sp. B, and Bactrites sp. C are described.

A highly spinose fragment of a possibly raptorial appendage from the Arenig (Early Ordovician) of the Upper Fezouata Formation north of Zagora, southeastern Morocco is described as the arthropod Pseudoangustidontus duplospineus gen. et sp. nov. The single fragmentary specimen displays a unique morphology, carrying at least 39 pairs of spines (i.e., 78 spines) of very regularly alternating lengths. Pseudoangustidontus gen. nov. shows some similarities to a number of spinose arthropod appendages and appendage parts, most notably to the spine−bearing podomeres of the third prosomal appendage of megalograptid eurypterids and the problematic and incompletely known genus Angustidontus. However, megalograptids and Angustidontus both have a lower spine count, while the latter also carries only a single row of spines. Because no known arthropod displays a morphology closely comparable to that of Pseudoangustidontus gen. nov., the affinities of the new fossil within Arthropoda remain uncertain.

A high-resolution correlation of ten upper Givetian-Frasnian sections spread over the differ ent facies environments of the Eastern Anti-Atlas (Morocco) is established using graphic correlation. The mea sured strati graphic ranges of eighty-five cono dont taxa have been as sem bled into a chronostratigraphic framework. The developed regional composite subdivides the Frasnian into 501 composite standard units (CSU) based on the original thickness of the reference section (Bou Tchrafine). This is a higher resolution than obtained by the classic biozone correlation. Based on the conodont data available for this correlation project, the jamieae and Lower rhenana zones could not be recognised in the sections.
