poetyka milczenia – japońska literatura okresu średniowiecza
Opis:
XII-XVI) i nowożytności (w. XVII-XIX).
Many ways of building ambiguity can be enumerated. One of the ways is to use homonyms, associations, suggestions, or even quotes. Another way is „not to say anything” or „be silent about it”. The first way seems more concrete, even dictonary-like. The other is more intuitive and difficult to attempt to describe in a scientific manner. Both the homonymy-based language game or recalling distant associations as well as other ars poetica used as decorations in the Japanese literature or not saying something allow the reader to understand the simple image in a myriad of ways. It is fascinating that Cyprian Kamil Norwid created his works in the same style not only in the aesthetical aspect but he also raised the value of silence as an ethical basis. He was similar in this respect to the Japanese artists of the late Medieval period (XII-XVI c.) and the modernity (XVII-XIX century). The poetics of silence considered as part of speech, silence, understatement, parabole, elipse, symbol, allusion, typical for Norwid – according to Krzysztof Andrzej Jeżewski – surprisingly, without modifications allow to describe Japanese literature. Ambiguity is born out of silence – although it may sound as a paradox, it turns out to be possible.

Opis:
Hieronim Baliński’s treatise on upbringing a noble boy, written in 1598, commissioned by Jan Łączyński for his son Kasper, has been used in literature for a long time. It is among the best known educational instructions the Old Polish period. Providing his guidance, Baliński showed exemplary education of a nobility boy. Baliński divided it into stages, taking into account the most important elements: religious and moral, physical and mental education. He also showed how to deal with a child and not discourage him from learning. In his opinion, religious education was of greatest importance as it was necessary for a young child to know God, His goodness, patience, mercy and love of human beings. The first stage of education was home schooling after which Baliński recommended a country school, followed by a trip abroad. A boy should take his first trip to Germany at the age of 12 and stay abroad for 2–3 years. According to Baliński, it was a prelude to the main journey which was to take place after a short stay at home. During the break, a young nobleman should be acquainted with the local law, operations of the court and the Parliament. Around the age of fifteen, a young man with a guardian appointed by his father should go abroad once again, this time to Italy, to develop his education and skills. Upon return from the trip, the young man continued education by transition to the adult life. Baliński recommended a court chancellery and military service. In the treatise he points out how a boy should behave towards other people; he also raised issues related to child nutrition and clothing. What is more, Baliński provided tips on physical development and exercises appropriate for children. The major source of Baliński’s treatise was religious literature although he probably referred to Quintilian’s and Mikołaj Rej’s works. According to his own account, Baliński drew on his experience and numerous conversations. The ideal man, as presented by him, bears resemblance to Rej’s faithful and mediocre “kind-hearted man”.

Subject and purpose of work: The thesis presents an overview of the economic issues which existed in the European Middle Ages and modern times, prior to establishing classical economics. Materials and methods: The thesis was prepared based on the literature review which included scientific publications and websites devoted to the economy, as well as to social and cultural changes. During the Middle Ages, the mere survival was no longer satisfactory for humans; the times saw the accumulation of wealth, which turned out to be a prerequisite for participation in social life. Results: The initial intellectual narrative was dominated by canonists who studied the laws emerging from religious doctrines, gradually shifting their focus to philosophy, emphasizing the importance of research methods based on reason. Many universal ideas were introduced at the time. Conclusions: a) The focus on the method used as a research tool accelerated the emergence of particular areas of scientific studies; b) Christianity constituted the cultural core in the medieval period; c) Theology, in conjunction with philosophy, constituted the source allowing for the emergence of social sciences.

The aim of the article is to interpret poems concerning Don Quixote written by contemporary Russian poets, like Iosif Brodsky, Alexander Kushner, Vsevolod Rozhdestvensky, Robert Rozhdestvensky, David Samoilov and many others, with the view to showing how the Spanish literary figure transforms in the receiving culture into an (indigenized) philosophical category. The author sets out to identify the main semantic constants of the Russian Don Quixote, to show an evolution of the hero in the oeuvre of particular poets (Pavel Antokolsky and Zinovy Valshonok) and to indicate the relationship between the image of Don Quixote and the lyrical subject. She also examines the relationship between Don Quixote and Sancho Panza and, finally, explains political connotations of the figure of Don Quixote in the poems by Margarita Aliger and Yevgeny Dolmatovsky.

EARLY MODERN AGE

MORAL PHILOSOPHY
Opis:
This essay investigates the correlation between ethical concepts and linguistic theories as represented by mainly Polish scholastics and humanists during the Early Modern Age. The point of departure is criticism of the secondary literature and discussion of typical problems faced by researchers of this period, e.g. a lack of modern editions and the influential biased approach of previous studies of a Kantian bent. It has been argued that linguistic surface structures (in particular differences between a rigid scholastic style and an elegant humanist one) are not a reliable criterion to ascertain the correlation in question. Therefore some texts have been analysed in terms of semantic deep structures as reconstructed by L.M. de Rijk and J. Magee. By way of a conclusion, epistemological implications of radical bilingualism being a model example of humanist dynamic semantic structures are compared to a theory of pluralism developed by M. Lynch.

Philosophy has always accompanied a human being as the way leading to discover wisdom. The Christian Revelation given by God in the person of Jesus Christ answers to the fundamental questions. The article states new tasks which, according to the encyclical Fides et ratio, stay in its serving role regarding theology. The definitions and concepts mentioned in philosopher’s writings enable us to explain the content of the faith as far as it is supported by realism and objectivity. The modern crisis of identity of a human being is connected with the abandonment of legacy of a classical idea that classical philosophy was based on. Nihilism, philosophy of relativism and pragmatism are characteristic features of present mentality but they cannot show the real sense of actuality to a man.

The St Clare Abbey in Wrocław, one of the most important monastic centres in Silesia, epitomizes very high religious culture in the modern age. Having accepted the 1677 constitutions that respected the Law of the Council of Trent, the nuns entered a new period of their inner life development, which also led to an improvement to their cloister library. The analysis of the preserved old prints contained in this collection reveals a very traditional and monastic profile of the culture of Wrocław Poor Clares, who remained open to new spiritual trends and contemplative ways of individual prayer. Among the authors, the nuns would opt for the members of the Jesuit Order and Benedictines, especially those from the German language culture.

This article is the fruit of research on the Kashubian genealogy and demography of a family of minor noblemen in the Early Modern period. Birth and baptismal certificates constitute a rich source of research material, whose thorough analysis enables us to observe the demographic changes taking place in a given community. Despite the fact that the obligation of regular birth and baptismal registration was introduced in the mid-16th century by the Council of Trent, in Poland birth and baptismal books did not become common until the first half of the 18th century. The source basis of the article is the book of baptisms in the parish church of Luzino from the years 1758–1797. Most villages belonging to the parish constituted the property of minor Kashubian noblemen. Out of 3075 baptisms recorded in the book, over 15% concerned the offspring of noble people. The aim of the article is to discuss those demographic elements, which could be captured in the process of the thorough analysis of birth and baptismal records. The research allowed us to define the average annual number of baptisms for subsequent five-year-long periods, to discover seasonality in conceptions and births, and to learn about the time and place of baptisms. The article also touches upon the issue of non-marital births in individual families and attempts to look at the onomastic trends among the 18th century Kashubian noblemen and to reveal the rules they followed while chosing names and godparents for their children.

Opis:
Two hundred and eleven cremation graves from the Roman Period and Early Migration Period, as well as nineteen other ancient features have been discovered at a heavily damaged cemetery of the Przeworsk Culture at Żdżarów in western Mazovia1. In the top part of grave 103, dated based on the presence of terra sigillata pottery from the Dicanus workshop in Pfaffenhofen from ca 230–260 AD, a poorly visible re-cut containing one clay vessel covered with a fragment of the bottom part of another was recorded (Fig. 1:a.b, 3); no human bones were found inside2. The vessels can be dated to the 14th–15th century, possibly even to the beginning of the 16th century. A different situation presents itself in the case of a cemetery of the Przeworsk Culture at Nadkole 2, in eastern Mazovia6. In addition to 157 graves from the Early Roman Period, clear traces of various modern cuts have been unearthed. The lower part of a cremation burial pit, probably from phase B2, was found under one of them. In the cut itself, fragments of four broken and incompletely preserved wheel-thrown vessels fired in a reducing atmosphere were discovered7. The pots that have been completely (Fig. 2:a.b) or partially (Fig. 2:d) reconstructed can be dated to the beginning or first half of the 16th century. Nevertheless, the end of the 18th century, or even the middle of the 19th century in rural areas, should be considered as the upper limit of occurrence of such potteryth. The fourth vessel is a very unevenly fired bowl, with a polished pattern on the inside (Fig. 2:c). This ornament indicates that it may have been tableware. This bowl should be dated to the 14th–15th century13 or later, assuming this chronology as its lower limit. An interpretation of both pottery assemblages described is not easy. In the case of Żdżarów, it seems possible to link the finds to child burials in clay vessels, known from the late Middle Ages and Modern period. Such graves, dating from the 14th to the 19th century, are known from several sites in Poland, almost exclusively in northern Mazovia15.16. The undoubtedly intentional burials at much older cemeteries, such as the four foetal burials in three vessels dating to 14th–15th century discovered at a Lusatian cemetery at Ożumiech, Przasnysz County19, are particularly interesting. No traces of bone were found in the Żdżarów vessel; however, as it was not possible to conduct specialist analyses of the fill at the time, it is not known whether it originally covered some form of burial or whether it was related to unspecified cult practices. The precise manner in which the vessel was dug into the top part of a much older grave pit (Fig. 3) shows not only the ritual character of the deposit itself, but also the ability to recognise a burial site abandoned a thousand years earlier. The archaeological context of the vessels from Nadkole suggests that they were a secondary deposit in the cut that destroyed the grave from phase B2 of the Roman Period29. In their case, there are no reasons to associate them with child burials or assign them a cult function; nor can they be considered a remnant of a late medieval or modern settlement, as no features from that period were discovered in the examined part of the site. The pottery published here shows that local populations from the late Middle Ages and Modern period either used (Żdżarów) or at least visited (Nadkole) much older cemeteries. This phenomenon is still very poorly researched, so every similar case requires a particularly thorough interpretation, based not only on a formal analysis of the feature itself and the pottery contained within, but also on the results of indispensable biochemical studies. It is worth noting that biochemical analyses of vessel contents conducted in Germany have recently confirmed the early modern custom of interring placentas (Nachgeburtsbestattung) in clay pots buried in the basements of homes27.

The castle in Kruszwica was built after 1343, at the request of Casimir III the Great. The oldest written sources, Kronika by Jan of Czarnków, dates the construction of the castle back to 1350-1355. The castle hosted the seat of the starost, judiciary authorities and a prison. In 1973-1982, the excavations were located in the central and south-western parts of the Castle Hill. In 2007-2008, the archaeological excavations were moved to the crests of the Hill; in 2010-2011 they were located chiefly near the structures of the castle building, still uncovered in 1973-1982. As a result, relics of the castle house were excavated together with several cellar rooms and fragments of the peripheral wall with remains of a gate. Following the results of stratigraphic and architectural analyses, the results of the research into the movable historic material, coupled with the results of 14C radiocarbon dating, four chronological periods have been identified in the history of the castle in Kruszwica: period I – since the mid-14th c. to 1519; period II – after 1519 to 1591; period III – after 1591 to 1657; period IV – after 1657.

Sediment data and facies were discussed in relation to hydrographic features (salinity, oxygen) and climate change. During the medieval warm period (MWP), from about 900 to 1250 AD, the hydrographic and environmental conditions were similar to those of the present time (modern warm period, since about 1850): a temporally stable halocline, caused by regular saline water inflows from the North Sea, prevents vertical mixing and leads to bottom water anoxia and the deposition of laminated, organic-rich sapropels. During the period from about 1250 to 1850, referred to as the cold phase (including the Little Ice Age), the environmental conditions of the central Baltic Sea were distinctly different: the lower salinity, resulting from reduced North Sea water inflows, allowed vertical convection of the water column and long-term stable ventilation of the sea bed (oxic stage). Both the productivity of the planktonic ecosystem as well as the preservation of organic matter in the sediments improved during the warm periods. The anthropogenic impact can be identified within the recent laminated sequence by a temporal reconstruction of pollutant deposition. Our findings imply a climate-change driven shift in the environmental conditions and the ecosystem of the Baltic from the north to the south and back to the north.
