Olive mill wastewaters represent a severe environmental problem, especially in Mediterranean countries. Indeed, the treatment and recovery processes developed so far remain very limited and their cost is very high. However, treatment by shallow evaporation ponds in the open air remains, until now, the most used technique despite the efforts made. The volume and characteristics of this liquid effluent depend, among other things, on the nature of the extraction process used. In this context, this work aims to evaluate the effect of the mode of trituration and storage in the evaporation ponds on the quality of olive oil mill wastewaters. These effluents were collected from three olive mills located in two different provinces in Northern Morocco during the 2021–2022 olive growing season. The sampling has considered different points according to different steps of the process. The analytical work corresponded to the measurement of in-situ parameters (Temperature (T°), Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Electrical Conductivity (EC) and pH degree (pH)) and other laboratory analysis (Suspension Matter (SM), Dry Matter (DM), Fatty Matter (FM), biochemical (BOD5) and chemical (COD)demands in oxygen). Results showed a high degree of environmental degradation. Indeed, these effluents are characterized, on average, by elevated concentrations of biological and chemical oxygen demands and suspended solids reaching up to 0.43 g/L ± 0.87, 1.69 g/L ±0.71 and 30.78 g/L ±25.1, respectively. This study also showed, except for two-phase olive mill BNANDA, a slightly alkaline nature of the vegetable waters (7.81<pH<8.52), as opposed to what was reported in the literature, and high levels in fat content (4.73 g/L ±3.85). Moreover, the estimated volume of vegetable water released in the study area during the 2019/2020 olive growing season (350×103 m3) is very high considering its equivalence to domestic water. Normalized Principal Component Analysis (ACPN) and Hierarchical Principal Component Classification (HCPC) indicate that differences in the composition of this wastewater were more pronounced between the extraction processes than by the origins of the vegetable waters (fresh or stored in the natural evaporation pond).

The olive mill wastewater, effluents from the trituration of olives, are treated in most Mediterranean countries by natural evaporation. However, this method of treatment is a source of air and soil pollution by the generation of solid waste, called olive mill waste cake. This work focused on extracting of vegetable oil from this by-product for biodiesel production by transesterification. The extraction took place with a Soxhlet extractor, using hexane as solvent. The vegetable oil and biodiesel were characterized by measuring the physicochemical parameters that identify them according to AFNOR standards. The extraction results show that the oil yield is 21.28%. The oil obtained is characterized by density, water and ash content, acidity, saponification, peroxide and ester. The yield of the oil esterification reaction is 86.41% or about 185 Kg of biodiesel/ton of olive mill waste cake, and in terms of energy 2783.7 MJ or 2 GW.t-1. The biodiesel produced is comparable to petroleum diesel according to EN 14214, 2013.

Several optimization studies were made to increase metal recovery and reduce operational costs of the concentrator in Siirt Madenköy copper mine. In consequence of these studies, effects of the changes in operating parameters, cost and plant recovery will be examined at this article. In this article, we will discuss two important revision studies, which are (i) replacement of 500 mm hydrocyclone set used in ball mills with 350 mm of hydrocyclone set, (ii) replacing the present Ball Mill with a SAG mill. Correspondingly elimination of the crushing and screening plant, (iii) increasing the scavenger cells from 4 to 6 by the addition of 2 more cells. In consequence with this feeding the middling tail to the increased scavenger cells which was treated as a part of final tail before this change. We will examine the effect of all these changes to the final recovery, concentrate grade and final cost.

The verification of the desired capacity increase in the grinding circuits is performed by simulation studies as they suggest accurate and fast alternatives compared to expensive and labor-intensive methods, particularly for the evaluation of situations that require investment. In this study, simulation was used to evaluate the alternatives that can be made to increase the capacity from 38.86 tph to 90 tph in a grinding circuit where copper slag is autogenously milled. The slag sample was characterized by drop weight and abrasion tests to describe the breakage in autogenous (AG) milling. The performances of the existing circuit and equipment were determined by a comprehensive sampling study, and modeling studies were carried out to form the basis of the simulations. Simulation scenarios were evaluated as investment free and investment requiring alternatives. In the investment free option changing fresh feed size distribution was examined however, capacity could be increased up to only 42 tph. In investment option, increasing the mill motor capacities was simulated and 90 tph target throughput was provided. This result was validated in the plant by replacement of mill motors of AG and pebble mill for 1000 kW and 750 kW, respectively.

Dzieje dawnego młynarstwa w Rybniku i okolicy, prócz mniej niż skromnej wiedzy odnoszącej się do czasów średniowiecza, lepiej są rozpoznawalne w źródłach pisanych czasów nowożytnych. XVI wiek to stulecie szybkiego rozwoju okolicznego młynarstwa. Z kolei dla XVII i początków XVIII wieku dysponujemy już dość sporą bazą źródłową przekazów, jak na lokalne warunki. W szczególny sposób ujawniają się trzy obszary funkcjonowania młynarstwa. Obszar majątku cysterskiego, to wsie Chwałęcice oraz Stodoły, gdzie od drugiej połowy XVI wieku zaistniała gospodarka młyńska. Baza źródła lepiej zachowana jest w przypadku wsi Chwałęcice i młyna zwanego Olszany. Dokumenty majątkowe pozwalają nam prześledzić losy młyna i jego mieszkańców-rodzin młynarskich w realiach XVII wieku. Drugi obszar to młyn na Wawoku (należący do rybnickiego majątku) oraz młyn zamkowy w Rybniku oraz związani z nimi młynarze – m.in. rodzina Nacyńskich (Naczyńskich). Trzeci mocny akcent pada na młynarstwo dóbr rycerskich okolic Rybnika (Chwałowice, Gotartowice, Popielów, Zebrzydowice). W tym przypadku zachowały się nawet nazwy tych miejsc związanych z młynarzami i młynami-Mośnik czy Gzel. Rozwój młynarstwa w drugiej połowie XVIII wieku stawia przed nami kolejne cele do rozpoznania, gdyż na omawianym obszarze działało już co najmniej dwanaście młynów.
The history of milling in Rybnik and the surrounding area, except for very scarce knowledge relating to the Middle Ages, is better recognized in the written sources of modern times. The 16th century was the century of rapid development of local milling. And for the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, on the other hand, there is already quite a large source base of accounts as for local conditions. Three areas of milling are particularly noticeable. The area of the Cistercian estate are the villages of Chwalęcice and Stodoły, where a milling activity emerged in the second half of the 16th century. The evidence is better preserved in the case of Chwalęcice and the mill called Olszany. The estate documents allow us to trace the fate of the mill and its inhabitants - milling families - in the 17th century reality. The second area is the mill in Wawok (belonging to Rybnik estate) and the castle mill in Rybnik and the millers associated with them - including the Nacyński (Naczyński) family. The third strong reference is to the milling activity in the knightly estates around Rybnik (Chwałowice, Gotartowice, Popielów, Zebrzydowice). In this case, even the names of these places associated with millers and mills - Mośnik or Gzel - have been preserved. The development of milling in the second half of the 18th century presents further objectives for investigation, as at least twelve mills were already operating in the area in question.

Green mine construction is the main melody of mining development and problems such as safe production, energy saving and consumption reduction need to be solved urgently. The working conditions of the mill are complex in the process of grinding. Aiming at the problems existing in the feature extraction and load prediction of the mill, a signal-processing method based on adaptive chirp mode decomposition (ACMD) and a standardized variable distance classifier (SVD) is proposed. Firstly, the recursive framework of the ACMD method is used to obtain the initial frequency of mill vibration signals. Secondly, the initial frequency is used to reconstruct the high-resolution component of the mill vibration signal through the iterative frame in the ACMD method. The frequency corresponding to the frequency domain peak of the reconstructed signal is then selected as the mill load feature vector. Finally, with consideration to the influence of standard deviation and standardized variable factors on the feature vectors, a standardized variable distance classifier is proposed. The feature vectors of the mill load are input into the SVD model for training, and the state types of the mill load are obtained. The method is applied to the grinding experiment and the results show that the frequency-domain features obtained by the mill vibration signal-processing method based on ACMD-SVD are obvious, which has high accuracy in the identification of mill load types, and provides a new idea for the extraction of mill load features and prediction of the mill load.
Budowa zielonej kopalni jest główną melodią rozwoju górnictwa, a problemy takie jak: bezpieczna produkcja, oszczędność energii i redukcja zużycia wymagają pilnego rozwiązania. Warunki pracy młyna w procesie mielenia są złożone. Mając na celu rozwiązanie problemów występujących w ekstrakcji cech i przewidywaniu obciążenia młyna, zaproponowano metodę przetwarzania sygnału opartą na dekompozycji w trybie adaptacyjnym ACMD (Adaptive Chirp Made Decomposition) i znormalizowanym klasyfikatorze zmiennej odległości SVD (Variable Distance Classifier). Po pierwsze, rekurencyjna struktura metody ACMD jest wykorzystywana do uzyskania początkowej częstotliwości sygnałów drgań młyna. Po drugie, częstotliwość początkowa jest wykorzystywana do rekonstrukcji wysokorozdzielczej składowej sygnału drgań młyna poprzez ramkę iteracyjną w metodzie ACMD. Częstotliwość odpowiadająca pikowi w dziedzinie częstotliwości rekonstruowanego sygnału jest następnie wybierana jako wektor cech obciążenia młyna. Na koniec, biorąc pod uwagę wpływ odchylenia standardowego i standaryzowanych czynników zmiennych na wektory cech, zaproponowano standaryzowany klasyfikator odległości o zmiennej długości. Wektory cech obciążenia młyna są wprowadzane do modelu SVD w celu uczenia i uzyskiwane są typy stanu obciążenia młyna. Metodę zastosowano w eksperymencie mielenia, a wyniki pokazują, że cechy w dziedzinie częstotliwości uzyskane za pomocą metody przetwarzania sygnału drgań młyna opartej na ACMD-SVD są oczywiste, co ma wysoką dokładność w identyfikacji typów obciążeń młyna i zapewnia nowy pomysł na ekstrakcję cech obciążenia młyna i predykcję obciążenia młyna.

In this work, the parameters affecting the dry grinding of talc in the attritor mill were investigated. The attritor was tested with its initial design without balls then with balls as additional grinding media to prepare a feed passing 45 microns. The prepared feed (-45 mm) was used to produce a product with 10 μm or less using statistical design in presence of balls. The presence of balls enhances product fineness. The significance of the studied factors is: stirrer speed>mill filling >grinding time. In addition, the d50 was correlated with studied factors. The mean particle size (d50) as low as 6 μm was obtained at 460 rpm, 20% mill filling, and after 60 min grinding time.
W niniejszej pracy zbadano parametry wpływające na mielenie talku na sucho w młynie Attritor. Attritor został przetestowany w początkowej wersji bez kulek, a następnie z kulkami jako dodatkowym medium mielącym w celu przygotowania nadawy przechodzącej przez 45 mikronów. Przygotowany wsad (-45 mm) został wykorzystany do wytworzenia produktu o uziarnieniu 10 μm lub mniejszym przy użyciu statystycznego projektu w obecności kulek. Obecność kulek zwiększa stopień rozdrobnienia produktu. Znaczenie badanych czynników to: prędkość mieszadła > wypełnienie młyna > czas mielenia. Ponadto d50 był skorelowany z badanymi czynnikami. Średni rozmiar cząstek (d50) tak niski jak 6 μm uzyskano przy 460 obr/min, 20% wypełnieniu młyna i po 60 min mielenia.

The demand for feldspar as a raw material for various industrial applications continuously increases. Feldspar is a primary raw material in manufacturing ceramics, glass, fillers, welding electrodes, and enamel. Feldspar is often associated with iron oxide, which decreases its economic value and hinders its industrial application. The present work aimed at reducing iron oxide content in Egyptian feldspar ore from the Wadi Zerabi locality. Ball milling was used for preparing feldspar feed of size -250+45μm. Carpco dry high-intensity magnetic separation followed by acid leaching processes were carried out in order to decrease the iron contamination and increase the feldspar content. A Box-Behnken statistical design was used to optimize the magnetic separation results. From a feldspar feed containing 1.40% Fe2O3, a non-magnetic concentrate of 0.25% Fe2O3 was obtained. The Fe2O3 removal reached up to 82% with a high yield as the % weight of non-magnetic feldspar reached up to 97.5%. The leaching process further reduced the iron oxide content down to 0.19 %. Also, the feldspar whiteness was improved from 65.17% in the original ore to 85.60% in the leached product.

Grinding is commonly responsible for the liberation of valuable minerals from host rocks but can entail high costs in terms of energy and medium consumption, but a tower mill is a unique power-saving grinding machine over traditional mills. In a tower mill, many operating parameters affect the grinding performance, such as the amount of slurry with a known solid concentration, screw mixer speed, medium filling rate, material-ball ratio, and medium properties. Thus, 25 groups of grinding tests were conducted to establish the relationship between the grinding power consumption and operating parameters. The prediction model was established based on the backpropagation “BP” neural network, further optimized by the genetic algorithm GA to ensure the accuracy of the model, and verified. The test results show that the relative error of the predicted and actual values of the backpropagation “BP” neural network prediction model within 3% was reduced to within 2% by conducting the generic algorithm backpropagation “GA-BP” neural network. The optimum grinding power consumption of 41.069 kWh/t was obtained at the predicted operating parameters of 66.49% grinding concentration, 301.86 r/min screw speed, 20.47% medium filling rate, 96.61% medium ratio, and 0.1394 material-ball ratio. The verifying laboratory test at the optimum conditions, produced a grinding power consumption of 41.85 kWh/t with a relative error of 1.87%, showing the feasibility of using the genetic algorithm and BP neural network to optimize the grinding power consumption of the tower mill.

In recent years, due to the tightening of competition in the global market of steel producers, the requirements for the quality of hot-rolled steel have increased. The finishing group of the rolling mill is characterized by a complex structure of mechanical and electrical parts. The operation of electric drive systems of such units is characterized by the interrelation of electromagnetic processes, mechanical phenomena and technological factors. As experimental studies have shown, the quality of the supply voltage is inextricably linked with the impact nature of the loads in the rolling stands of the roughing and finishing groups of the hot rolling mill. A decrease in the supply voltage may be accompanied by the development of emergency modes of synchronous electric drives, leading to a decrease in the quality of the finished product.The paper developed a mathematical model of the power supply system of the rolling mill JSC "ArcelorMittal Temirtau". It is shown that this can lead to loss of synchronism of the synchronous motor. Such a voltage drop has a significant impact on the operation of DC electric drives of the finishing group. Various strategies are proposed to counter the development of emergency situations.

Artykuł w syntetyczny sposób omawia historię i prace restauratorskie (podjęte w 2019 r.) dotyczące zabytkowego wiatraka wieżowego w Pyzdrach w Wielkopolsce. Tłem rozważań jest historia młynów wieżowych w Europie oraz ich zasób w obecnych granicach Polski. W ramach prac dokumentacyjnych szczegółowej analizie poddano wyposażenie technologiczne, opracowując schemat przeniesienia napędu oraz schemat technologiczny młyna. Przypadek restauracji murowanego „holendra” w Pyzdrach może stanowić wzór dla innych tego typu wiatraków na terenie Polski. W omawianym przypadku udało się zachować wysoki stopień autentyzmu zabytku przy jednoczesnym przywróceniu jego sprawności technicznej.
The article in a synthetic way discusses the history and restoration works (undertaken in 2019) of the historic tower windmill in Pyzdry in Greater Poland. The background of the considerations is the history of tower mills in Europe and their resources within the current borders of Poland. As part of the documentation work, the technological equipment was analyzed in detail, developing a drive transmission diagram and a technological diagram of the mill. The case of the restoration of the tower windmill in Pyzdry may be a model for other windmills of this type in Poland. In the discussed case, it was possible to preserve the authenticity of the monument while restoring its technical efficiency.

Opis:
Ceramic tiles are the most common building material for floor and wall coverings in many countries. Glazed tiles are produced from mixture of frits and some additional raw materials applied on the surface of green tiles and subjected to a firing process. A new method of processing of glaze that is dry stirred media mill was investigated in a pilot grinding plant. The produced glaze particle size, shape and surface area are measured. The comparison was made with the product of conventional wet discontinue ball mills using the same wall tile glaze recipes. The results indicated that dry stirred media mill can provide product that have finer particle size distribution, more stable product compared to the conventional wet ball milling. The glaze thermal expansion and optical properties such as colour (L, a and b parameters) of the produced glazes were measured and comparison was also made in details. Finally, the microstructural characteristics of the produced glazes were determined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results have shown that dry stirred media mill enhances glaze properties and process economy considerably.

This paper investigates the production of a micronized muscovite to a target product size of d50~15 μm with a minimum energy consumption to suit the product requirements of the paint industry by a dry grinding process in a laboratory-scale vertical stirred ball mill. A series of batch dry grinding tests were conducted without and with two commonly used industrial liquid grinding aids, ethylene glycol (EG, C2H6O2) and triethanolamine (TEA, C6H15NO3). The results were evaluated based on particle size distribution (PSD), specific energy consumption, span value, and aspect ratio. The results showed that using liquid grinding aids resulted in a finer PSD, lower specific energy consumption, a narrower size distribution, lower span values, and a higher aspect ratio, which meant better delamination and improved grinding efficiency to that of no grinding aid. The interaction between grinding aids and ground muscovite surfaces was investigated by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). FTIR measurements revealed that EG and TEA were physically adsorbed on muscovite surfaces. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was also employed to determine differences between ground muscovite surfaces with and without grinding aids. SEM images indicated that grinding aids could prevent the agglomeration of ground muscovite particles while improving delamination. Adding grinding aids led to a decrease in muscovite agglomeration and an improvement in lamination owing to the adsorption of grinding aids on the particle surfaces.

In this study, the relationships between the liberation degree and the kinetic breakage parameters of a chromite ore obtained from the Burdur (Türkiye) were examined under the laboratory conditions. Firstly, liberation degrees for chromite particles were determined by the particle counting method in a metal microscope for 4 different size groups. Secondly, the breakage parameter of chromite ore which was dry ground with a ball mill was obtained using standard test methods. Additionally, the model parameters were also determined for the fractional interstitial fillings (U) of the chromite sample. Thirdly, the kinetic grinding parameters were compared with the liberation degree of the chromite sample. As a result of the tests, a very good correlation was obtained with R2=0.998, and regression analysis in the grinding processing of the chromite ore was used to verify the validity of the relationship parameter of Si that was produced. To these, it was found that interstitial fillings (U=0.6, 0.8, 1.0, and 1.2) have an effect on the grinding.

In many cases, old working mills, use machines that are several dozen years old, which are not adapted to the safety requirements. Their use may result in an accident at work. The article presents a case study of the work safety assessment in an old mill. The analysis was carried out with the use of a proprietary checklist, taking into account the current safety requirements. Non-conformities that were identified as the results of the analysis, had an impact on the level of security. The greatest number of non-conformities concerned the fulfillment of technical requirements. Actions aimed at improving work safety were proposed. The prepared checklist is a universal tool for assessing work safety in mills in Poland.
W wielu przypadkach stare, pracujące młyny, wykorzystują kilkudziesięcioletnie maszyny, które nie są dostosowane do wymogów bezpieczeństwa. Ich użytkowanie może skutkować wypadkiem przy pracy. W artykule przedstawiono studium przypadku oceny bezpieczeństwa pracy w starym młynie. Analizę przeprowadzono z wykorzystaniem autorskiej listy kontrolnej, uwzględniającej aktualne wymagania bezpieczeństwa. Niezgodności, które zostały zidentyfikowane w wyniku analizy, miały wpływ na poziom bezpieczeństwa. Najwięcej niezgodności dotyczyło spełnienia wymagań technicznych. Zaproponowano działania mające na celu poprawę bezpieczeństwa pracy. Przygotowana lista kontrolna jest uniwersalnym narzędziem do oceny bezpieczeństwa pracy w młynach w Polsce.
