    The paper discusses the issue of cultural memory in a translation of literary text. Based on material of Miljenko Jergović’s story Gurbet and its Polish translation, the article shows how elements of source cultural memory present in the original text are being “lost” when translated to other language and culture. The term of “losing memory” is used figuratively to present the consequences of a translator’s (conscious and/or unconscious) decisions on which specific features of source culture are to be preserved (foreignization) or not (domestication) in the target text. These decisions influence the image of source culture that the reader of the translation can “produce” in the wake of reading. For instance, Polish translation of the story “Gurbet” only partly preserves the memory of Christian-Islamic and Slavic-Ottoman intercultural (or even transcultural) coexistence in the region of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which is one of the main topics and motifs of Miljenko Jergović’s works. As a result, Polish reader cannot produce the same image of the source culture as the reader of the original.

    Artykuł omawia chorwacką kondycję posttraumatyczną w kontekście ustaleń wypracowanych w nurcie tzw. badań nad zagładą (M. Hirsch, S. Felman) i badań nad pamięcią (A. Assmann). Lokalna recepcja przeszłości we współczesnym społecznokulturowym dyskursie zostaje tu ukazana ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem zależności kulturowej pamięci Zagłady z pamięcią faszystowskiego Niezależnego Państwa Chorwackiego (NDH) 1941–1945 oraz pamięcią wojny bałkańskiej 1991–1995. Lokalne uwikłania historyczne decydują o niepowtarzalności doświadczenia chorwackiego i warunkują jego asymetryczny charakter oscylujący między figurami kata i ofiary, często oparty na przemilczeniach i przeinaczeniach. Tak przeprowadzona rekonstrukcja pamięci otwiera możliwość analizy i interpretacji Ruty Tannenbaum M. Jergovicia uznanej przez autorkę za tekst założycielski dla rozrachunkowej debaty nad pamięcią Chorwacji i zarazem postpamięciowy, a więc operujący strategiami narracyjnymi charakterystycznymi dla II i III pokolenia świadków.
    The subject of the article is the Croatian posttraumatic condition considered in the context of the establishments of modern research and the concepts of Holocaust Studies (M. Hirsch, S. Felman) and Memory Studies (A. Assmann). Local reception of the Holocaust in the recent social-cultural discourse is collated here with the memory of the fascist Independent State of Croatia (1941–1945) and the memory of the last Balkan War (1991–1995). Local historical context determines the uniqueness of Croatian experiences and conditions its asymmetric character which oscillates between hangman and victim positions; usually based on concealments and misrepresentations. The aforementioned assumption entails further targets: the analysis and interpretation of M. Jergović’s Ruta Tannenbaum which is considered here as the founding text to the examination discussion of the Croatian Past and, at the same time, as a postmemory text which uses narrative strategies specific for second and third generations of witnesses.

    U članku se na osnovi poljskoga prijevoda romana Miljenka Jergovića Srda pjeva, u sumrak, na duhove raspravlja o problemu stereotipa u prijevodu. Odabranim translatološkim postupcima pokazuje se kako je prevoditeljica (Magdalena Petryńska) pokušavala prenijeti stereotipske predodžbe iz izvornoga okvira u poljski kulturni krug. Predstavljeni primjeri prevodilačkog rada također su polazište za refleksiju o povezivanju pojma stereotipa s problemom interpretacije te definitivno potvrđuju kako je čovjek-subjekt (pa tako i Jergovićev lik) kulturno biće. U vezi sa stereotipom postavlja se i pitanje mogućnosti neovisnog (ili stručnog) razumijevanja stvarnosti i umjetnosti. Odgovor se traži pomoću koncepcije S. Turnera i P. Bourdieua koju se pokušava prilagoditi rješavanju pitanja stereotipa.
    This article is based on a Polish translation of the novel by Miljenko Jergović Srda pjeva, u sumrak, na duhove and discusses the problem of stereotypes in translation. Selected translation procedures will show the interpreter (Magdalena Petryńska) trying to convey stereotypical notions of the original frame in the Polish cultural circle. Examples of the procedures that interpreter’s followed are also a starting point to the reflection on the idea of linking the problem of interpretation and the problem of stereotype. Through these examples it is shown that the subject (which is also a literary figure) is a cultural being. The problem of stereotype allows for the raising of a question about the independence of reality and art’s interpretation. Response to this question is inquired with the help of the concepts of S. Turner and P. Bourdieu.

    U članku se sintetično ukazuje književnu nazočnost Miljenka Jergovića u Poljskoj te se pregledava poljske prijevode njegovih djela. Predstavlja se Jergovićeve veze s Poljskom, npr. njegovu suradnju s Magdalenom Petryńskom (prevoditeljicom svih poljskih izdanja njegovih romana) i njezin utjecaj na piščevu popularnost u našoj zemlji. U odnosu na to, članak se koncentrira na Jergovićevu najviše poljskom djelu — (kratkom) romanu Wilimowski. Zahvaljajući Petryńskoj roman je bio objavljen u Poljskoj u travnju 2016., što je bila svjetska premijera ove knjige u tiskanom izdanju. U članku se ukratko prezentira okolnosti izdanja poljskog prijevoda Wilimowskog, razloge piščevog interesa za Poljsku (između ostalog za naslovni lik romana — poljskog nogometaša Ernesta Wilimowskog) te recepciju knjige u Poljskoj. isto tako se ukazuju osnovne crte Jergovićevog književnog rada npr. naracijska strategija ili najčešće teme koje se pojavljuju u njegovim djelima.
    The article gives a brief summary of Miljenko Jergović’s literary presence in Poland. It concentrates upon the writer’s poems, short stories, novels and essays hitherto translated into Polish and published in Poland. Additionally, jergović’s manifold connections with Poland are presented, starting with the history of his cooperation with Magdalena Petryńska, who translated all of his novels into Polish. This translator’s impact on the writer’s popularity in our country is underscored. Within this scope, the article concentrates on the Jergović’s “most Polish” work, a short novel entitled Wilimowski. Thanks to Petryńska’s efforts, the book was published in Polish in april 2016, which constituted the novel’s world premiere. The article concisely addresses and describes the circumstances of Wilimowski’s several editions, concurrently discussing motives behind the writer’s interest in Poland (among others, the novel’s protagonist — a Polish football player Ernest Wilimowski), and the book’s reception in Poland. Last but not least, Jergović’s writing technique is characterized along with leitmotifs of his literary works.

    U članku se analizira roman hrvatskog (i bosansko-hercegovačkog) pisca Miljenka Jergovića "Ruta Tannenbaum" i njegov prijevod na poljski jezik (prevoditeljica: Magdalena Petryńska). Istražuje se na koji se način dijalogiziraju znakovi i kulturni kodovi u originalu i u prijevodu, te se pokazuje koje se aspekte semantike književnog djela i semantike kulture ne mogu adekvatno prisvojiti u poljskom jeziku i u poljskoj kulturi. Tako se i razmatra mogućnost primjene jednog semiotičkog i kulturno-semiotičkog pristupa u translatologiju.
    In the article the novel "Ruta Tannenbaum", written by Croatian and Bosnian-Herzegovinian author Miljenko Jergović, and the translation of the novel into Polish by Magdalena Petryńska is analyzed. By comparing the original and the translation the question of dialogization of signs and cultural codes is taken into consideration. It is presented which aspects of the semantics of the literary work and the culture itself cannot be adequately adapted into the Polish language and Polish culture. Simultaneously, the idea of applying a semiotic and cultural semiotic approach in translatology in analyzed.
