Opis:
The work compares the effectiveness of selected methods of graphitizing inoculation applied after the spheroidization in the slender tundish ladle of 1 Mg capacity. The inoculation was carried out according to the three various options. The first one was performed simply by means of the block of inoculant inserted in the gating system of the mould, the second one started with initial inoculation by the in-stream method during the transfer of metal from the slender ladle to the pouring ladle and was completed with the secondary modification by means of the inoculant insert placed in the mould, the third one consisted in similar initial inoculation by the in-stream method during the transfer of metal from the slender ladle to the pouring ladle followed by the secondary inoculation, again by the in-stream method, applied during the pouring operation. Examination of cast iron structure allowed to find that the best results of inoculation are achieved in the case of inoculation carried out according to the Option III, though in all cases it was possible to produce cast iron of EN-GJS-400-15 grade meeting the demands of the Standard.

Opis:
Though normal air cooling and green sand mold-casted gray iron convey an essentially pearlitic matrix, ferritic gray iron is used in some electro-mechanical applications to have better magnetic properties, ductility, and low hardness. Conventionally, to produce ferritic gray iron, foundryman initially produces pearlitic gray iron, then it is carried through a long annealing cycle process for ferritic transformation. This experiment is conducted to eliminate the long annealing cycle from the conventional process. A process is developed to produce as-cast ferritic gray cast iron by air cooling in the green sand mold. In this experiment, Si content is kept high, but Mn content is kept low based on sulfur content; a unique thermodynamic process is established for decreasing the Mn content from the melt. After a successful preconditioning and optimum foundry return charging, the melt is specially inoculated, and metal is poured into the green sand mold. An extra feeder is added for slowing down the cooling rate where casting thickness is around 15mm. Finally, hardness and metallographic images are observed for final confirmation of the ferritic matrix.

Opis:
Colour Metallography is a set of light metallographic microscopy methodologies that utilize phase colour contrast as a source of new structure information compared to conventional techniques. In many cases, colour contrast can be induced where no identifiable phase contrast is obtained by conventional techniques. With the help of colour contrast, we gain new information on the structure of Al-Si alloys, especially intermetallic phases, in which the benefits of its use in casting quality control are of benefit. Blue-yellow contrast is definitely more pronounced than dark grey or light grey contrast. There is no substantial reproducible colour reproduction, since it is irrelevant whether the two phases are distinguished by blue-yellow or green-ocher contrast. When using the colour contrast, the structural components differ not only according to their microscopic appearance, but also based on the knowledge of the chemical composition of alloys, interactions between structural components, knowledge of the possible influence of Al-alloys structure (e.g. refining, modifications, heat treatment). Colour contrast in quality control of Al-Si alloys was applied to AlSiMg cast alloy (AlSi7Mg0.3; AlSi7MgTi; AlSi10MgMn; etc.).

Opis:
In this paper a plastic deformation and a damage evolution in low-carbon cast steel containing non-metallic inclusions are analysed experimentally and numerically. Two microstructures of the cast steel have been obtained after appropriate heat treatment. Tensile tests of smooth specimens and axisymmetric notched specimens have been performed. The notched specimens have the notch radii: 1 mm, 3 mm and 7 mm. Fractography of the specimens was carried out to observe fracture mechanisms. The mechanism depended on the stress state in the notched specimens. The fractography showed the existence of two fracture mechanisms: ductile failure and by shear. The process of the voids growth formed on the non-metallic inclusions was the process which included in the explanation of the damage mechanism. Modelling of deformation of the specimens has been used with the model suggested by Gurson, Tvergaard and Needleman. The model is implemented in the Abaqus finite element program. The computer simulation was performed using ABAQUS system. The computed output was compared with the experimental results obtained for specimens of the same shape.

Opis:
In this paper results of microstructural observations for series of CuZn39Pb2 alloys produced from qualified scraps are presented. The individual alloy melts were differentiated in terms of thermal parameters of continuous casting as well as refining methods and modifications. Structural observations performed by SEM and TEM revealed formation of different types of intermetallic phases including “hard particles”. EDS results show that “hard particles” are enrich in silicon, phosphorus, iron, chromium and nickel elements. Additionally, formation of Al-Fe-Si and Al-Cr in alloy melts was observed as well. It was found that quantity and morphology of intermetallic phases strongly depends upon the chemical composition of raw materials, process parameters, modifiers and refining procedure applied during casting. It was observed that refining process results in very effective refinement of intermetallic phases, whereas modifiers, particularly carbon-based, results in formation of large particles in the microstructure.

Procesy wyciskania prowadzono w temperaturze: 280ºC, 300ºC, 316ºC i 338ºC przy współczynniku wydłużenia λ wynoszącym 4,14 i 5,78 odpowiednio dla średnic wyciskanych prętów wynoszących 16 mm i 20 mm. Jedynie w wyniku wyciskania w temperaturze 280ºC otrzymano pręty pozbawione wad (nieciągłości) powierzchniowych i wewnętrznych. Zwiększanie temperatury procesu od 300°C do 338°C skutkowało pojawieniem się nieciągłości wewnętrznych lub powierzchniowych w skali makroskopowej. Podczas procesu wyciskania następowała dynamiczna rekrystalizacja ziaren. Gęstość wydzieleń fazy γ-Mg17Al12 w pasmach i skupiskach wyraźnie zmniejszyła się, kiedy proces wyciskania prowadzono w największej temperaturze.
The paper presents the results of metallographic examination of AZ91 magnesium alloy – a raw ingot and one after the processes of supersaturation and forward extrusion of rods. The extrusion processes have been performed at the temperatures of 280oC, 316oC and 338oC with the elongation coefficient, λ equal to 4.14 and 5.78, respectively, for the extruded rod diameters of 16 mm and 20 mm. Rods free of surface and internal defects (discontinuities have been obtained only as result of extrusion at the temperature of 280oC. Increase of the process temperature from 300oC to 338oC has resulted in internal or surface discontinuities in the macroscopic scale. During the extrusion process, dynamic recrystallization of grains took place. The density of the secretions of phase γ-Mg17Al12 has clearly decreased when the process of extrusion was performed at the highest temperature.

Opis:
Cast zinc alloys have similar properties to aluminium alloys. The differences are due to the lower melting point and higher density. Zinc has a density of 7.14 g/cm3, a melting point of 419.5°C and the boiling temperature of 906º C. In the temperature range from 150 to 200°C, zinc has good susceptibility to plastic deformation. It is also resistant to atmospheric factor influence, but is not resistant to acids. The main use of zinc alloy, is the production of thin-walled casts that require high precision. Zinc alloys are also used for die casting moulds, housings and covers as well as a variety of devices that are used in the precision industry, electrical engineering, automotive and construction industry. Properly performed chemical modification leads to improve of properties of the produced castings. Therefore it is very important to know how the cast structure with the change of the chemical composition by adding metallic modifiers to the liquid metal. In this work there was studied the effect of chemical modification of cast zinc alloy on the properties and microstructure of the alloys before and after modification. Modified alloys were prepared by adding modifiers in the range of 0.1% to 1% in form of Ti- Sr and B as aluminium master alloy and then cast into the metal moulds. Next the thermo-derivative analysis was performed of the modified Zn-Al-Cu alloy, the microstructure investigation was carried out using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy with EDS X-ray microanalysis usage as well as hardness was measured of the modified Zn-Al-C alloys.

The paper presents the results of microstructural examinations of the industrial heat-resistant centrifugally cast GX25CrNiSi18-9 steel characterised by increased content of Cu. The study included changes in the microstructure of base cast steel respective of the steel held at a temperature of 900 and 950°C for 48 hours. Based on the results obtained, an increase in microhardness of the examined cast steel matrix with increasing temperature was stated, which was probably caused by fine precipitates enriched in Cr, Mo, and C forming inside the matrix grains. The layer of scale formed on the tested cast steel oxidised in the atmosphere of air at 900 and 950°C was characterised by an increased tendency to degradation with increasing temperature of the conducted tests.

Opis:
The work determined the influence of aluminium in the amount from about 1% to about 7% on the graphite precipitates in cast iron with relatively high silicon content (3.4% to 3.90%) and low manganese content (about 0.1%). The cast iron was spheroidized with cerium mixture and graphitized with ferrosilicon. The performed treatment resulted in occurring of compact graphite precipitates, mainly nodular and vermicular, of various size. The following parameters were determined: the area percentage occupied by graphite, perimeters of graphite precipitates per unit area, and the number of graphite precipitates per unit area. The examinations were performed by means of computer image analyser, taking into account four classes of shape factor. It was found that as the aluminium content in cast iron increases from about 1.1% to about 3.4%, the number of graphite precipitates rises from about 700 to about 1000 per square mm. For higher Al content (4.2% to 6.8%) this number falls within the range of 1300 – 1500 precipitates/mm2. The degree of cast iron spheroidization increases with an increase in aluminium content within the examined range, though when Al content exceeds about 2.8%, the area occupied by graphite decreases. The average size of graphite precipitates is equal to 11-15 μm in cast iron containing aluminium in the quantity from about 1.1% to about 3.4%, and for higher Al content it decreases to about 6 μm.

The paper is concerned with comparing the methods for determining the ferrite content in castings from duplex stainless steels. It uses Schaeffler diagram, empirical formula based calculation, image analysis of metallographic sample, X-ray diffraction and measurement with a feritscope. The influence of wall thickness of the casting on the ferrite content was tested too. The results of the experiments show that the casting thickness of 25 or 60 mm does not have a significant effect on the measured amount of ferrite. The image analysis of metallographic sample and the measurement with the feritscope appear to be the most suitable methods. On the contrary, predictive methods, such as Schaeffler diagram or empirical formula based calculation are only indicative and cannot replace the real measurements. X-ray diffraction seems to be the least suitable measuring method. Values of ferrite content measured in such a way often deviated from the values measured by image analysis and with feritscope.

The results of microstructure examinations and UTS, YS, El, RA carried out on low-carbon cast steel containing 0.15% C. The tests were carried out on specimens cut out from samples cast on a large-size casting and from samples cast in separate foundry moulds. It has been shown that significant differences in grain size observed in the material of the separately cast samples and cast-on samples occur only in the as-cast. In the as-cast state, in materials from different tests, both pearlite percent content in the structure and mean true interlamellar spacing remain unchanged. On the other hand, these parameters undergo significant changes in the materials after heat treatment. The mechanical properties (after normalization) of the cast-on sample of the tested cast steel were slightly inferior to the values obtained for the sample cast in a separate foundry mould. The microscopic examinations of the fracture micro-relief carried out by SEM showed the presence of numerous, small non-metallic inclusions, composed mainly of oxide-sulphides containing Mn, S, Al, Ca and O, occurring individually and in clusters.

The surfacing technologies are used for constitution of protection layer against wear and is destined for obtaining coating with high hardness. Among many weldings methods currently used to obtain the hard surface layer one of the most effective way of hardfacing is using flux cored arc welding. This additional material gives more possibilities to make expected hard surface layer. Chemical composition, property and economic factors obtained in flux cored wire are much richer in comparison to these obtained with other additional materials. This is the reason why flux cored wires give possibilities of application this kind of material for improving surface in different sectors of industry. In the present paper the imperfection in the layers was used for hardfacing process in different situations to show the possible application in the surface layer. The work presents studies of imperfection of the welds, contains the picture of microstructures, macrostructures and shows the results of checking by visual and penetrant testing methods.
