The focus of the article is to present the changes in Kannon bodhisattva’s statues created before and after the war, and to shed light on the religious aspect of the issue of “war and peace”, based on material culture research. The topic of national monuments catches the attention of Japanese society as well as academic research circles due to the lawsuits regarding cenotaphs commemorating war heroes, often seen as a violation of the separation of religion and state. The most known one being the case of Yasukuni Shrine, therefore the rituals observed to honor the fallen also come into focus. While on the topic of wartime martyrdom, the Buddhist role should be mentioned. For example the monument of Kannon Victorious, erected after the Russo-Japanese war, stands proof to the notion that the cult of this bodhisattva cannot be interpreted from Buddhist teachings perspective only. While mapping the changes in Kannon monuments, the author looks into when, by whom and why the monuments were created, and what form took on. The early Shōwa period witnessed the development of the “World Kannon Movement”. The Kannon statues of the time were dedicated to wartime heroes. In order to stress the friendly relationships between China and Japan at the time, a monument exchange was conducted. The great Higashiyama Kannon statue was transported to Nankin, and in return Japan received a statue of a thousand-handed Kannon. The images of Kannon, the symbol of mercy and brotherhood, are numerous amongst the material cultural heritage. Soldiers would often address Kannon, the Protector from Bullets. Right after the war it was common to give figures of Kannon to the families of the fallen soldiers. Kannon was revered as the patron of the spirits of the soldiers (for example The Kannon of the Kamikaze). On the other hand in the regions especially touched by the war, like Hiroshima or Nagasaki, the statues of Kannon were erected for the memory of the victims or as a prayer for health. The statues of Kannon of Peace mostly show the bodhisattva as female. For the regular honoring of the dead it was customary to use statues of Jizō or Amida Buddha. For the cenotaphs the statue of Kannon seemed more proper. It is mostly Kannon whom we see in monuments of national heroes. At the same time Kannon is considered to be the patron of world peace. The changes in social environment influenced the form of Kannon statues. This influence would reach deeper than the forms of honoring the memory of the dead. The statues of Kannon can be regarded as monuments symbolizing the Buddhist faith since ceremonies for the dead hold a special place in Buddhist belief.

The emergence of Ukrainian political emigration on the territory of the Second Polish Republic was due to the defeat of the Ukrainian revolution. The desire to settle on the territory of the Volyn Voivodship was motivated by the people’s eagerness to get into the Ukrainian-language, mostly Orthodox religious environment, which reduced the intensity of the psychological adaptation of the emigrants. The figure of Symon Petliura was controversially evaluated by various political environments, however, in the Volyn Voivodship, the chieftain’s companions treated him mainly respectfully. Starting from 1926, every year in May throughout all western Volyn mourning events took place in the form of memorial services, academies, presentations of abstracts. In the regional centers there were Ukrainian public committees to commemorate the memory of Petliura. The sympathizers of Symon Petliura offered the format of celebrations, their ideological content, celebrated the honor of the Chieftain by collecting funds for the assistance of the Symon Petliura Library in Paris and donations to the funds of the Museum of the Liberation Movement of Ukraine in Prague. Remembrance of the name of Symon Petliura played an important role in unifying emigration, the formation of historical memory. The beginning of the Second World War interrupted this tradition on the territory.

Трагическая история двадцатого столетия уходит в прошлое — не остаётся в живых авторитетных свидетелей истории первой половины XX века. Однако остаются коллективные практики памяти и коммеморации. В работе рассматривается, каковы практики коллективной памяти, касающиеся травматических событий истории XX века. Исследуется этичность современного документального театра о репрессиях, медийное освещение демонтажа памятных досок в Твери, попытки ребрендинга музея в Медном, борьба за подлинную историю военного историка Светланы Герасимовой и создание монумента во Ржеве. Статья заставляет подумать, каковы образы памяти и ее состояние в сознании современников, каковы приемы проникновения в память в литературных и нелитературных текстах или попытки избавиться от нее.
The tragic history of the first half of the 20th century is receding into annals of history there are hardly any surviving witnesses. However, practices of commemoration and collective memory are still there. Aleksandr Bushev looks at practices of public commemoration of collective consciousness related to the traumatic events in the history of the 20th century. The article focuses on modern documentary theatre concerned with repressions, media coverage of deconstruction of memorial plaques on the former building of Kalinin NKVD, the attempts to rebrand the Mednoye Museum, the struggle against the falsification of military history undertaken by Tver historian Svetlana Gerasimova, and the creation of a Soviet soldier memorial in Rzhev. Bushev’s goal is make us reflect on the images of memory in the consciousness of our contemporaries, on the ways in which this memory can be penetrated via creative and journalistic texts, and on attempts to erase this memory.
Tragiczna historia XX wieku odchodzi w przeszłość — nie pozostało przy życiu wielu reprezentatywnych świadków dziejów jego pierwszej połowy. Pozostają jednak zbiorowe praktyki pamięci i komemoracji. W artykule omówiono rodzaje praktyk pamięci zbiorowej odnoszące się do traumatycznych wydarzeń z historii XX wieku. Analizie poddane zostały kwestie etyczności współczesnego teatru dokumentalnego o represjach, medialne relacje z demontażu tablic pamiątkowych w Twerze, próby rebrandingu muzeum w Miednoje, walka o prawdę prowadzona przez historyka wojskowości Swietłanę Gierasimową i powstanie pomnika w Rżewie. Artykuł skłania do refleksji nad obliczami pamięci i jej stanem w świadomości współczesnych, technikami wnikania w pamięć w tekstach literackich i nieliterackich czy próbami pozbycia się jej.

This article examines the connections of the outstanding Ukrainian composer Boris Lyato-shinsky with Polish culture of the 20th century. These connections can be traced at the genetic level and in the context of his music from the 1950s and 1960s. It is argued that the Polish theme forms a kind of supercycle in the composer’s work, which symbolizes the memory of culture and unites a number of his works with Polish themes. These include the piano “Slavic Concerto” by B.Lyatoshinsky, the symphonic poems “Grazhina” and “On the Banks of the Vistula,” and the “Polish Suite” for a symphony orchestra. This supercycle is associated with the “memorial” genre, which actualizes the “memory” mechanism. In this case, we are talking about the “Polish memory” of B. Lyatoszynski, a characteristic feature of which is the connec-tion with the Polish musical culture, which is present in his works at the intonation, genre, and conceptual level.

On the basis of folklore and ethnographic material of the 19th – early 21st century the symbolic status and ritual functions of beggars in funeral and memorial rites of Belarusian Dvina region are discussed. The beggars represent a peculiar social group, the specificity of which is most expressively manifested in the ritual forms of behavior, including the funeral and memorial rites of the dead. The reasons of their inclusion into the ritual sphere (through the analysis of such characteristics as poverty, physical deviations, blindness, special appearance, possession of secret knowledge, the nature of their “activity”, isolated lifestyle) are presented. The article deals with the status and ritual functions of beggars in the funeral rites and rites of the memorial cycle (within a year from the date of death and calendar holidays). New field material is involved in the study, part of which is fixed by the author. The results of the research will be useful in the study of worldviews and beliefs.

Статья посвящена осмыслению и описанию урбанонимной лексики в связи с феноменом гендера.  Устанавливаются особенности репрезентации гендерного компонента в урбанонимиконах восточнобелорусского города Витебска и восточнопольского Белостока. Показывается общее и специфическое в наборах «женских» и «мужских» названий линейных объектов витебской урбанонимной системы в сравнении с  белостокской. Констатируется наличие гендерных особенностей как на уровне качественного наполнения, так и на уровне статистической структуры системы названий внутригородских объектов, в частности, значимыми оказываются информация о доле манифестации в нем наличия людей разного пола, оценки, приписываемые мужчинам и женщинам; в корпусе мемориальных названий улиц, площадей, скверов проявляется гендерная асимметрия: «женские» соотносятся с «мужскими» в Витебске как 1 к 8,5; в Белостоке – 1 к 8,3; отсутствие в витебском списке сфер деятельности мужчин, имена которых послужили основой для наименования линейных и территориальных объектов, таких разрядов, как церковно-религиозные деятели и святые, короли, князья, представители дворянского рода,  литературные персонажи и названия литературных произведений, является доказательством существующих различий в использовании мужских имен для создания урбанонимов и их связи с историческими и культурными отличиями белорусского и польского социумов, в частности, исчезновение в результате установления советской власти в Беларуси привилегированного сословия дворян и титулов правителей, а также о большем внимании поляков к своей национальной культуре и литературе. Подчеркиватся, что рассмотрение урбанонимной картины мира в гендерной парадигме может способствовать раскрытию гендерных стереотипов, бытующих в современной культуре, а также установлению специфического культурно-исторического содержания, вкладываемого белорусами и поляками в осмысление действительности. Делается вывод о том, что, имея широкие перспективы исследования, изучаемая проблема нуждается в дальнейших углубленных сопоставлениях урбанонимных систем не только родственных, но и неродственных языков.
The article is dedicated to the comprehension and description of urbanonymous vocabulary in connection with the phenomenon of gender. Specific features of the representation of the gender component in the urbanonymicons of the eastern Belarusian city of Vitebsk and Рolish Bialystok are determined. The report shows general and specific aspects in the sets of “female” and “male” names of the linear objects of the Vitebsk urbanonym system in comparison with theof Bialystok. The presence of specific gender features is stated both at the level of qualitative content and the statistical structure of the system of names of intracity objects. In particular, information about the proportion of the manifestation of the presence of people of different sex in it is of a significant nature, with assessments attributed to men and women. In the body of memorial names of streets, squares, squares, the priority of the masculine principle is manifested: “feminine” is correlated with “masculine” in Vitebsk as 1 to 8.5; in Bialystok — 1 to 8.3. The absence in the Vitebsk list of the spheres of the activity of men, whose names served as the basis for naming the linear and territorial objects such as categories as church and religious figures and saints, kings, princes, representatives of a noble family, literary characters and the names of literary works serves as proof of the existing differences in the use of male names to create urbanonyms and their connection with the historical and cultural differences between the Belarusian and Polish societies, in particular, the disappearance of the privileged class of nobles and the titles of rulers as a result of the establishment of Soviet power in Belarus, as well as the greater attention of Poles to their national culture and literature. It is emphasized that a consideration of urbanonymous picture of the world in the gender paradigm can contribute to the disclosure of gender stereotypes that exist in modern culture, as well as the establishment of a specific cultural and historical content, one invested in jointly by Belarusians and Poles in understanding reality.
