Opis:
Ceuta and Melilla, are the last European territories which are left on the African mainland. They are largely unknown to Europeans, other than to Spaniards for whom they present a legacy from the country's military past. Once of the strategic significance owing to their close location to the Strait of Gibraltar, the two towns have gained new importance over the last 10 years as major migration gateways to Europe from the Maghreb and Sub-Saharan Africa, as well as centres for contraband. Ceuta and Melilla (unvaryingly twinned as diplomatic issues) together with a series of rocks and small islands, are claimed by Morocco despite being Spanish possessions for centuries. In the article is described Morocco-Spanish border, the conflict on the island of Leila/Perejil, Morocco-Spanish relations on the background details of the king of Spain Jose Carlos in Ceuta and Melilla, and the problem of immigration from African countries.

Opis:
The article discusses the phenomenon of border fences erected in the 1990s in Ceuta and Melilla. The fences are understood as objects which have a specific agency and whose existence raises a number of activities in the political sphere, as well as having a strong impact on the symbolic sphere. On the one hand, as a consequence of the material existence of fences, there are nume-rous decisions made that influence practical legal solutions concerning immigrants. Immigrants themselves are also forced to take actions and decisions they would not do without the physical presence of the fence. On the other hand, recordings and photos of people who try to cross it serve as the visual message contributing to the creation of a simplified and negative image of immigrants in Europe. Furthermore, fences constitute a material representation of a new spatial paradigm existing in the world, which consists in exclusion and strengthens the binary opposition between a “worse” and “better world”.

Opis:
The paper shows some aspects of ‘border identity’ of the two Spanish cities-exclaves: Ceuta and Melilla. It analyses the multicultural dimensions of coexistence between Muslim (Moroccan) and Spanish populations. The article refers to some political, social and economic challenges: Moroccan revindication policy, growing number of Muslim communities, illegal migration, the phenomenon of violent radicalization inspired by the jihadi ideology etc. In this context, the paper focuses on the most important elements of ‘the border identity’ which are crucial to further the understanding of social problems in these cities. The methodological analysis is based on the integration of historical and system methods as well as scientific research and investigation conducted in Spain. Regarding some integration and inclusion efforts there are still unsolved social and economic problems that may have influence on the coexistence of different ethnocultural communities in the future.
