Opis:
Salinity stress severely affects the growth, physiological and developmental processes in plant species. Melia dubia is an ecologically and economically important tree species of the Indian subcontinent. However, systematic information with respect to the species salt tolerance potential is completely lacking. Under salt stress conditions, determining suitable soil EC range is required for the better survival, growth and productivity of the tree species. In present study, we investigated the effects of different soil salinity (EC 4, 8, and 12) levels on the ion homeostasis, physio-biochemistry, morphology, and growth of M. dubia plant. Results revealed that increase in soil salinity causes higher Na+ content and Na+/K+ ratio, while lower K+ content, in the leaf tissues of M. dubia. The physiological processes such as the photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, internal CO2 concentration, and transpiration rate were adversely affected with the increased salt stress levels. Morphological parameters, such as internodal length, petiole length, leaf length, and leaf width also decreased (P<0.05) under saline stress conditions. Results further indicat- ed that salinity levels significantly (P<0.05) affected the M. dubia growth, and the growth rate was found optimum upto 8 EC, thereafter it slightly decreased with the increased salt stress to 12 EC. Our findings showed that increased salinity stress causes significant changes in the physiological, morphological, and growth pattern of M. dubia. Therefore, based on present experiment, we found M. dubia suitable for the salt affected soils of EC 8 with optimum growth rate and at EC 12 with the moderate (20–25%) growth reduction.

Opis:
With the revival of interest in natural products and the ‘back to nature’ call, researchers have started looking into the herbal literature of oriental civilisations, particularly those of India and China, in addition to European and other sources. In this article, I would like to introduce knowledge about two plants and their use in veterinary medicine. Melia azadirachta L. and Centella asiatica L., are a traditional plants known and used for medicinal and cosmetic purposes for thousands of years. Extracts of various parts of neem have proven its medicinal properties; antihelmintic, antifungal, antidiabetic, antibacterial, antiviral and antifertility. Neem use as an insecticide and pesticide was also well documented. The leaves and the whole herb of Centella asiatica, are used in Ajurveda medicine for thousands of years for improving memory and for treatment of central nervous system diseases, vasculo-cardiac disorders, chronic gastric ulcers, dermatopathies and hard healing wounds. The results of modern research have shown the merits of the application Centella asiatica in disorders of the nervous system, cardiovascular system, stomach ulcers, skin diseases and the positive effects on wound healing. Currently, for both presented plants, their therapeutic utilization is still under investigation.

Opis:
Keeping in mind the problem of seed storing in tropical and subtropical countries where high temperature and high relative humidity (RH) greatly accelerate seed ageing phenomenon causing consequent deterioration and non-viability of seeds, an investigation was carried out on maintenance of storage potentiation of a green gram species by using selected plant extract. Pretreatment of green gram (Phaseolous mungo L.) seeds with aqueous solution of leaf extract of neem (Melia azadarch) 50g in 500 ml distilled water for 2 hours and then dried back to the original dry weight of the seeds before accelerated ageing treatment (99.1% RH and 32±2 ºC) for different durations (0 to 30 days) slowed down the rapid loss of germination and reduced the time (h) required for 50% seed germination (T50) of the seeds. The plant extract also significantly arrested the reduction of protein, insoluble carbohydrate, DNA and RNA levels as well as activity of catalase enzyme of seed kernels during forced ageing period. Ageing-induced stimulation of the activity of amylase enzyme was also alleviated by the seed pretreating agent.
