Opis:
The article presents reflection on the presence of the nineteenth-century convictions and visions of the past in the Polish post-war medieval studies practiced on the historical ground. The nineteenth century was the time when modern critical historiography started to be created. For practical reasons the article discusses only the field of history, without referring to other fields that also practice medieval studies. The author emphasizes numerous historiographic references to the nineteenth-century paradigms of perceiving the past. One of them was the paradigm of describing the “national” past. What is also signaled in this study are rather archaic manners of describing the past in the post-war period and the utilitarian character of some historical studies.

Opis:
In the beginning of the pontificate of Innocent III (1198–1216) the necessity of creating a large coalition for a better organization of the Fourth Crusade convinced the pope to establish diplomatic relations with Bulgaria and Serbia, and to support Hungarian expansion in Bosnia. His aim was to surround Constantinople with a ring of states loyal to the Roman Church, thus forcing the empire to participate in the crusade. In order to achieve this result, Innocent was more than willing to put aside his concerns for strict religious orthodoxy and allow the existence, to a certain extent, of non-conforming practices and beliefs in the lands of South-eastern Europe. While this plan was successful at first, and both Bulgaria and Serbia recognized pontifical authority in exchange for political legitimization, the establishment of the so-called Latin empire of Constantinople in 1204 changed the picture. Its relations with Bulgaria were extremely conflicted, and the threat posed by Bulgaria to the very existence of the empire forced again Innocent III to a politics of compromise. The survival of the Latin empire was of the greatest importance, since Innocent hoped to use it as a launching point for future crusades: yet, he tried until possible to maintain a conciliatory politics towards Bulgaria as well.

Константин-Кирил (Vita Constantini: who, when, where) by Maya Ivanova and Tsvetomira Danova, published in 2021 in Sofia. The book consists of two main parts. The first and most extensive part is a kind of lexicon with 177 entries: personal name and by-names of actual historical figures; biblical and mythological characters; names of ethnonyms, tribes and languages; geographic names (including names of sacred objects), difficult and archaic words. Part II contains the text of the Vita. The book is a handbook intended for a wide groupof lay audiences, including Bulgarian Studies scholars abroad. This handbook is a coherent and well-thought-out entity. The study combines the condition of scientific credibility with the feature of accessibility. There is a need for similar teaching aids in the didactic process of students of Slavic studies.

The geopolitical changes in Central and Eastern Europe which began in 1989 influenced also changes in the status of the field of history. In an attempt to change the perception of the field, a turn to the Middle Ages could be observed, as the times of prosperity in the Kingdoms of Bohemia, Hungary and Poland could serve as an excellent foundation for building a national identity. Thus, the authors propose a complex picture of historically and artistically oriented Medieval Studies in Poland against the backdrop of the situation in Central and Eastern Eu‑ rope, trying to ascertain how and to what extent the events of 1989 influenced the status and development of the discipline. Thirty years after the Yalta Conference, what can be observed is a gradual process of opening the discipline onto new methodologies and technological changes, as well as realizing its capabilities, which were hitherto suppressed by the oppressive political system. The natural generational change contributes to solidifying practices which the youngest generation of art historians takes for granted. However, the influences of inertia, deeply-rooted complexes and post-mortem victory of communist propaganda cannot be omitted. For the ma‑ jority of academic centers in Poland, it is virtually paradigmatic to talk about art in a very nar‑ row geographical context, accompanied by the tendency to isolate phenomena with clear ties to the European context. Too often is art in Poland seen as an expression and a consequence of its peripheral status, while almost overlooking the uniqueness and originality of many artistic phenomena. Moreover, a vision of Poland as a homogenous entity in its contemporary borders persists in the subconscious of the society, which constitutes a serious hindrance in the spread‑ ing of knowledge and is often used as a tool in historical politics. In addition, it should be noted that, unfortunately, many good practices, such as the obligation of familiarity with the entirety of the literature on the subject, begin to disappear, perhaps in connection with the “publish or perish” mentality and the need to fulfill the obligations towards the academic institution. Para‑ doxically, then, the political upheaval of 1989 brought in the discipline of art history, as well as the field of humanities as a whole, both positive as well as detrimental changes.

The work is concentrated on the problem of war prisoners in the chronological period of the existance of the so-called First Bulgarian state. The analysis is based predominantly on various Byzantine and selected Latin and Bulgarian sources from the epoch. With some exceptions, mostly for 707/708, 754/755, 763/764 and 774, the notices are concentrated around the events of 811–815/816, 837/838; 894–896, 917–30s and for a moment or two from the period of 971–1018. In his preliminary remarks the author comes to the conclusion that in the Early Middle Ages prisoners of war (in the broadest medieval sense) were an integral part of the efforts to achieve the political objectives of the Bulgarian rulers. Response mechanisms against prisoners of war were highly dependent on the course of the conflict and their attitude towards their own warriors and subjects caught up in enemy hands. They included a wide range of solutions, which could be grouped into three main areas: the first one refers to killing (and/or mutilation) of war prisoners; the second main line was connected with preserving the lives of the captives; the third group of measures was due to the fact that an immediate effect is not always haunted.

Opis:
This article deals with media studies and discusses a problem thoroughly examined by historians of the Medieval period concerning the expansion of mendicant orders and their ministry work in the flourishing European cities of the 13th century. The research perspective – which differs from a strictly historical and theological point of view – emphasizes the impact of mendicant orders on communication in the rapidly changing social conditions of the era. Therefore, it allows one to interpret confrontations with wandering heretical preachers in the 12th century not only as a religious conflict, but also a confrontation with a certain way of distributing ideas that contested the existing state of affairs. It also makes it possible to expose the enduring features of the media role of the preacher, which determined his popularity until the Reformation.

He graduated in history at the Department of Humanity of the Uni- versity of Warsaw, presenting a master's thesis on the policy of Gdańsk in the second half of the 14th century, written on a seminar by Marian Małowist. Pro- fessors Witold Kula and Aleksander Gieysztor have also played an important role in Henryk Samsonowicz's intellectual development, and later, during his stay in France, professor Fernandel Braudel. In 1954 he has defended his doctor's the- sis, and in 1960 received his postdoctoral qualifications based on the famous work “Studies of the patrician capital of Gdańsk in the 2nd half of the 15th cen- tury”. The academic interests of professor Henryk Samsonowicz have initially focussed on the history of the Hanseatic League, and later — on the importance of myth in history and on the beginnings of the Polish state in the 10 th century. In his scientific work he has created a new model of historical narration, which combines various aspects of political, economic and cultural life in one whole. He has published over a thousand reviews, articles and dissertations in print. He has occupied a series of important positions he was, among others, a dean of the De- partment of History of the University of Warsaw; during the times of “Solidarity” he was appointed as the Chancellor of the University of Warsaw. In 1989 he be- came the Minister for the National Education in the first non-communist govern- ment of Tadeusz Mazowiecki. Opis:
The paper presents literary images of medieval women in four Middle English romances, viz. King Horn, Sir Isumbras, Havelok the Dane and Sir Gawain and the Green Night. Its aim is to identify some conventional patterns of representation of female characters in the literary works classified as different subtypes of the genre of romance, namely ancestral romance (King Horn, Havelok the Dane), homiletic romance (Sir Isumbras) and Arthurian romance (Sir Gawain and the Green Knight). After Sharon Farmer and other feminist critics, the concept of gender is interpreted as one of the major categories of difference in medieval English society. This argument is supported by the analysis of the construction of female characters in the romances in question. However, while it is important to remember that the society of medieval England was to a large extent male-governed and male-dominated, which is the reason for the apparent centrality of male protagonists in medieval English literature, the function of female characters in literary works of that period is not necessarily secondary. The paper focuses on the importance of women in presenting the protagonist’s genealogy and on selected strategies of representation, such as reversal of gender roles or marginalization of female characters. The essay attempts to demonstrate that the category of gender, as it is seen in the medieval texts, cannot be reduced to a simplified model of binary oppositions, since the romances also introduce the complexity of power relations and tensions between the sexes.

The eminent German medievalist, Joseph Koch, assumed that Neoplatonism had been handed down to the Middle Ages basically in two forms: the one given to the Neoplatonist outlook by St. Augustine, the other being the result of the reworking of Neoplatonist themes by Pseudo-Dionysius. Rev. Prof. Kurdziałek, when quoting Koch’s opinion, used to remark, that this bipartite typology was not adequate as it failed to take account of another variety of Neoplatonism that had been operative in the shaping of medieval intellectual culture, namely the Boethian Neoplatonism. Few scholars in Poland in the second half of the 20th century devoted much attention to Boethius’ philosophy; yet contrary to the general trend, Rev. Prof. Kurdziałek constantly discussed issues and themes concerning Boethius in his lectures, monographs and articles. The author of the Consolation of Philosophy was never viewed by him as a mere intermediary or transmitter standing between antiquity and the Middle Ages; rather he presented Boethius as a thinker that was seminal in shaping medieval philosophy up to and inclusive the 12th century and even later on, even though his later influence had not been predominant. This article, based upon the study and analysis of Rev. Prof. Kurdziałek’s output aims to present his contribution to the area of Boethian studies as well as contributions made in this field by his disciples and followers.
Wybitny mediewista niemiecki, Joseph Koch twierdził, że neoplatonizm został przekazany wiekom średnim w dwóch zasadniczych postaciach, a mianowicie augustyńskiej i dionizjańskiej. Ksiądz profesor Marian Kurdziałek nawiązując do tej wypowiedzi Josepha Kocha zwykł był mawiać, że tę typologię średniowiecznych nurtów neoplatońskich należy uzupełnić o jeszcze jedną odmianę neoplatonizmu, neoplatonizm boecjański. W drugiej połowie XX wieku filozofią Boecjusza zajmowało się, zwłaszcza w Polsce, niewielu badaczy. Tymczasem, ks.

Opis:
It was during Witold Hensel’s studies at the University of Poznań and the first years of his working at the Poznań University right before the Second World War when his interests and the main trends of his scientific career were crystallized. It was only just when the medieval archaeology in Poland, as the result of some spectacular discoveries in the main centres of the first Piasts’ State, namely in Gniezno and Poznań, was developing. At the same time in the Poznań Centre an interdisciplinary cooperation between humanities (ethnography and history) and natural sciences started. Comparative studies were also widely carried, supported by intensive international contacts. Witold Hensel, a young archaeologist at that time, was an active participant of them. As the sum of all that, it was nobody else but Witold Hensel who in 1946, not long after the WWII was over, formulated a new research project, met with enthusiasm by other scientists, to celebrate the first millennium of the rise of the Polish State, which was soon to come. It was the first so widely planned interdisciplinary project in humanities (and it is worth mentioning that palaeobilogists were also involved) and the obtained results were immense. For the Polish medieval archaeology it was the time of a huge increase in terms of appearance and development of institutions and methodology as well as in number of scientists interested in the subject. It all led to some sort of “outflow” of the members of the Polish archaeological school to the West-European countries (Italy, France and further on also to some others) what, to a large extent, gave the basis for some studies carried on in the field in those areas. The other Witold Hensel’s research trends, later on followed by a huge number of his students, were concerned with settlement studies based on detailed inventarisation and publication of archaeological sources, as well as comparative studies carried out on a large scale. The latter were fulfilled by Witold Hensel not only in his scientific publications (especially some editions of “Słowiańszczyzna wczesnośredniowieczna” (Early medieval Slav lands). He also created and edited a new interdisciplinary periodical titled “Slavia Antiqua”, which was his attempt to continue ideas formulated by specialists of different Slavic disciplines already before the war. Above all however, there was his active participation in foundation of the International Union of Slavic Archaeology. The Union, by its congresses and symposia as well as publications, positively influenced studies in medieval archaeology in general.
