Opis:
William of Auvergne (1180–1249) was one of the first wave professors of University in Paris to engage with Greek, Islamic and Jewish philosophical writings that had become available in Latin translation. He was the author of a vast work that he calls the Magisterium divinale (Teaching on God). De universo (On the Universe), written in the 1230s, is the most philosophical treatise of the Magisterium. One short part (I, 3, 25-26) of this treatise includes a very important philosophical topic – the problem of truth. Based on a doctrine of Avicenna, William formulated one of the forms of truth's classical definition. In his view, this definition express the essence of logical truth, which is constituted in any relation between human intellect and things, if intellect is adequate to his object. So the logical truth is a basis and property of true judgments and statements about all real things, and even about what really does not exist (things in the future, in the past, non-beings, negations), and – generally – about all the man can think or about everything possible to thinking. William rejects the doctrine of St. Augustine, who taught that every truth has its source in the First Truth identified with God the Creator of all things and intellects contingent. William argues that only actually existing things are real existing as caused by God. So only actually existing things can be substrates of truth and so subjects of true judgments and statements. The Creator doesn't cause things as existing in the past, in the future, but as existing in the present. What is more, He doesn't cause non-beings and negations. In consequence, William recognizes logical truth as the only justification for true adjudication of all what exists and doesn't exist. In Steven P. Marrone's opinion William's theory of truth is a new idea in the early thirteenth century. He believes that William's theory, however incomplete, explains how much the problem of truth is depended on logic rather than metaphysics, so that it could be separated radically from questions of being and viewed independently of the issue concerning the relation of the mind and creatures to God. In fact, although William continued to speak in traditional terms, he divorced with the point of view of ontology and natural theology, finding solutions in theories of logic and language. However, taken in this article studies seem to show that William's theory of truth is embedded in a metaphysical context. Furthermore, medieval logic is the science of the action of the intellect, which is a faculty of human being. This is not logic in twentieth-century's sense. Thus, it does not seem to William resigned from metaphysics to logic. His theory of logical truth is imperfect because of metaphysical errors. The main error is that the logical truth, which realizes in the relation of intellect to things and so is one of truths that exist in contingent beings, William considered as final and the sole basis of every true judgments and statements, without regard to its dependence on the First Truth. Indeed, logical truth is not able to truly independent existence.

The theory of “music of the spheres” (musica mundana) introduced by Boethius in his treaty De institutione musica is an original contribution in development of mediaeval theory of music. However, it’s roots trace back to the Greek antiquity. When considering the sources of medieval theory of musica mundana, one shall underline three most important sources: (1) mythology with its complex cosmogony (esp. by Homer and Hesiod), (2) early cosmology by pre-Socratic philosophers (incl. Anaximander, Heraclit), (3) Pythagorean school. Despite of the fact that idea of the music of the spheres – as presented by the Pythagoreans – was criticized by Aristotle in his De caelo, it became one of the most influential cosmological concept. One of the most striking results of this situation is the fact, that for many ages (during mediaeval era) music was regarded as a scientific discipline, despite its aesthetical dimension.

Despite of the fact that idea of the music of the spheres – as presented by the Pythagoreans – was criticized by Aristotle in his De caelo, it became one of the most infl uential cosmological concept. One of the most important periods – from the point of view of the reception of discussed theory – is the twelfth century. It is often called the aetas Boethiana as it is distinguished by an increased interest in the works of Boethius, with special emphasis on his theological writings and Consolatio, which was very popular at the time. The reason behind this phenomenon was a growing specialization of issues relating to the theory of music, which fi nally led to its independence from the other areas of knowledge; yet this is not the only reason why the subject of the harmony of the spheres was again widely discussed in philosophical circles. An essential factor was the development of Neo-platonic philosophical schools, such as the famous School of Chartres. The interest in natural sciences in the School of Chartres and later in the Oxford School made the scientists of the time focus on the works of authors whose ideas were essential to the concept of the harmony of the spheres, among them such philosophers as Calcidius, Macrobius and Boethius

Opis:
The purpouse of this paper is to examine main factors determining the medieval understanding of reason and explain differences among contemporary historians in their evaluation of medieval rationalism. According to this interpretation proper characteristic of scholastic thought should take into account teleological orientation of medieval culture. Religious faith and revelation were considered by most of philosophers not as external authority but rather as a internal ,,frame” which settled either aim and boundaries for rational investigations. This ,,frame” appoined by revelation pointed out scope not only for philosophical investigations but organised whole medieval culture providing its unity. Medieval reason was independent within this theological limitations in a similar manner as contemporary analitic philosophy is independent from science and scientific rationalism. Contemporary criticism toward medieval rationalism is caused by transposition of Enlighment's criterions of rationality on medieval thought.
W artykule omawiam zasadnicze aspekty średniowiecznego pojmowania natury rozumu teoretycznego.

In the late medieval political philosophy one can observe the original concept of natural law. It has been innovative doctrine when compared to the theories of Augustine and Thomas Aquinas. Its originality relies on grasping (natural) law as a feature of a subject, not as a feature of the world-structure. Among representatives of such a theories there can be mentioned William Ockham, Francesco Suarez and Polish philosophers: Paul Vladimiri and Stanisław of Skarbimierz. The aim of this article is to examine in what extent late medieval natural law theories assume the innovative anthropology, which enhances the role of will, and passes over the role of reason. There is going to be argued that coherent anthropology which can be applied as a foundation of natural law theory, can be found in Paul’s of Worczin anthropology and ethics.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to show that John Versor’s concept of esse presented in his commentary on De ente et essentia by Thomas Aquinas is not in accordance with the Thomistic view. Versor distinguishes two kinds of esse: esse essentiae and esse existentiae. The former pertains to non-substantial beings, and the latter pertains only to the substances. Additionally, esse existentiae is regarded as the proper act of substance. This theory of “double esse” is not to be found in Aquinas’ works; yet, it has been worked out by Giles of Rome, who seems to be the source of inspiration for Versor. Moreover, the further influences of Giles of Rome upon Versor’s philosophy can be found in his consideration of real difference between essence and existence. Therefore, in respect of the concept of esse, due to influences of Giles of Rome, John Versor cannot be regarded as the follower of Thomas Aquinas in the strict sense.

The article presents Thomas Aquinas’ concept of pleasure in other’s misfortune (Schadenfreude), i.e. specific joy, the source of which is the suffering of other people. The first part describes the ancient Schadenfreude sources that inspired Aquinas. The second part deals with the concept of hatred that underlies the concept of Schadenfreude. In the third part, it is presented Aquinas’ attempt to distinguish between various cases of the occurrence of Schadenfreude and an attempt of their moral justification.

The article aims at presenting the life and work of Étienne Gilson (1884–1978)—a historian of philosophy, medievalist, renewer of the scholastic tradition, proponent of a return to the original doctrine of St. Thomas Aquinas, and philosopher. It is focused on selected areas of Gilson’s philosophical interest, such as: medieval philosophy, the history of philosophy, existential Thomism, atheism, literature and art. In the final analysis, Gilson appears as a firm advocate of philosophical realism which makes it possible to find a way out of contradictory explanations of the world, and allows man to live in openness to the voice of God’s revelation that constantly flows from reality.

This article addresses the issue of the two-level nature of acts of the will, i.e. its ability to voluntarily refer to its own acts. First, we will examine the ancient sources of the concept of the two-level will (Plato and Augustine). Then, we will focus on the views of John Duns Scotus on the types of acts of will, with particular emphasis on the concept of non velle and its application in philosophical and theological issues. Against the backdrop of Scotus’s concept, we will examine the ways in which 14th-century thinkers engaged with his position and developed his account of the two-level acts of will and types of acts of will. Finally, the article discusses a significant change in the function of non velle and the use of this type of volitional act in 14th-century ethics by exploring the views of Buridan and Kilvington.
