Media utożsamiają z reklamą, krytykują za propagowanie niezdrowych zachowań, dbanie o interesy reklamodawców (producentów farmaceutyków i żywności), ukrywanie informacji o szkodliwych substancjach w otoczeniu. Nadmiar krytycznie ocenianych informacji powoduje presję i brak zaufania do informacji o zdrowym stylu życia. Edukacja zdrowotna powinna m.in. ułatwiać identyfikowanie swoich przekazów, unikać metod normatywnych, ograniczać skalę zaleceń i lepiej wyjaśniać zmiany, jakim one podlegają, przeciwdziałać kojarzeniu dbałości o zdrowie głównie z zachowaniami konsumenckimi, uczyć zdolności utrzymania orientacji w warunkach nadmiaru informacji i budować świadomość swojej marki. Med. Pr. 2017;68(4):525–543
Background Information overload, including commercial ones, about healthy lifestyle, is a challenge for perception of health education. Material and Methods The empirical data gathered from 100 employees in 2010 by means of free interviews with a standardized list of required information, aimed at analyzing a feeling of pressure to lead a healthy lifestyle, including reactions to meassages provided by the media. Results Respondents feel pressure associated with a healthy lifestyle from doctors, the state, relatives, friends and themselves. They accept pressure exerted by doctors and appreciate it from relatives and friends, however, the latter may stimulate adverse behavior. As a negative pressure they perceive that imposed by the media, government’s shifting the responsibility for citizens’ health, information overload contradictory to their own knowledge, unattainable recommendations and their volatility. Such pressure evokes conviction for their own resistance or rejection of the messages. They criticize the media for promoting unhealthy behavior, attending interests of advertisers, hiding information about harmful environmental influence. They appreciate the media for facilitating learning about health and preventive examinations. Health education messages are only occasionally identified by better educated people. Conclusions “Dense” information environment is a hostile background for health education. An excess of critically evaluated information evokes pressure and lack of trust in information. Therefore, health education should facilitate the identification of its contents, avoid normative methods, limit the number of guidelines and better explain the faced changes, counteract tendencies to associate healthy lifestyle mainly with consumer behaviors, teach how to maintain self orientation in information overload conditions, and build up awareness of one’s own brand. The aim of the article is to show new perspectives of research and development of media, digital and information competences in the context of knowledge and research in (cyber) psychology. It draws attention to the functions of media education in relation to civil society, the society of knowledge, and the society of communication democracy. In the modern media civilization, these competences, acquired through formal and informal education, are the basis for conscious functioning in many social roles (eg citizen, consumer) and dealing with disinformation. The last part of the article is dedicated to shaping media competences in young children (2.5-7 years old), who should develop these skills under the care of an adult. The task of educational environments is the systematic implementation of home media education that facilitates the child's functioning in the environment of traditional and new media.

The main purpose of the article is to present the role and importance of Polish factchecking initiatives in context of their educational dimension. The central question that the authors will try to answer is: To what extent and in which way do the Polish fact-checking initiatives provide education as part of their activities? To answer this question, the authors implemented a two-step research design – starting from desk research concerning the development of Polish fact-checking scene and its social, political, economic and cultural background. The second step included in-depth, semi-structured interviews with five representatives of different types of Polish fact-checking initiatives. Considering a limited number of fact-checking organizations in Poland, the authors can assume a certain level of generalizability of the results of such qualitative research. The study shows that studied initiatives are occasionally active in the field of media and information literacy, and only some of them (i.e. mostly those related to civil society groups) treat their educational activities as a priority.

The occurrence and spreading of online mis-information and dis-information is a phenomenon that adversely affects various areas of social and political life on a global scale. At the transnational (especially European) level, regulatory mechanisms are currently being sought, which would be able to limit their occurrence or easy distribution through online space - or possibly to enable an individual to build up a defence against their influence. Defensive instruments are designed specifically at the educational level. In Slovakia, the issue is currently being given more attention in the context of school education in connection with initiatives of the teachers and institutions that create educational projects and campaigns as well as methodological tools for the implementation of the topic in education (cf. Kačinová, 2018). However, these should be supported by a compulsory curriculum, specific educational topics and educational objectives. The present study examines the situation in Slovakia with focus on the lower secondary and upper (complete) secondary general education.

Opis:
Information and communication technologies (ICTs) are often considered crucial for teaching media and information literacy (MIL). However, there is a wide variety in educational media, and there are different competence areas in MIL. Thus, the idea that using any ICT can facilitate the fostering of different MIL areas equally seems oversimplified. This study investigates associations between three types of ICT use and four MIL competence areas. It analyzes data of 315 secondary teachers in Germany employing exploratory structural equation modeling. After controlling for teacher and school traits, the findings show that teachers who use the computer lab in their schools and basic computer applications tend to foster their students’ critical, safety, information, and operational competencies more often. Conversely, using ICTs that mainly serve presentation and visualization purposes has a negative or no association with fostering the four MIL areas. Finally, using mobile devices and online resources is positively associated with fostering students’ information competence. The analysis contributes to a more specific understanding of teachers’ practices with digital media. Possible implications are discussed for teachers’ practice and training as well as for research and policy.

In the era of the modernization of professional and educational services due to the COVID-19 pandemic innovation processes have been activated. An important condition for high school graduate students is to have new competences in media literacy as part of the educational vision for modern Ukrainian society. New approaches and requirements for professional education determine fundamental changes in the methodology, organization of the education process, subjects, content and instruments helping students in practice and everyday activities. Vectors of educational cooperation with students are more reflected in virtual communications using information and communication technologies (ICT) as modern progressive digital media literacy and educational practices are adapted for young people. In our article, the results of the experimental investigation in using virtual info media practices in the organization of education of students in Journalism and Social Communications field is presented. The aim of the research is to demonstrate how applied experience of using school lessons with connected virtual communicative practices such as info media quests, virtual workshops and media bridges affect media literacy education. We underline the educational advantages of innovative technologies in studying media literacy in Ukrainian high schools and improving the digital communication and critical thinking competencies of young people. The results of the present investigation show that virtual info media practices in high school have made significant progress and have huge advantages over the traditional methods of education in the context of the realization of individual oriented approaches in media literacy education for young people. The opinion poll of the students studying Journalism and Social Communications at Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University with the approbation of appointed virtual communications forms demonstrates this upgrading of their media literacy levels and professional capabilities.

The main purpose of this article is to present the link between the level of media and information literacy (MIL) and political preferences of Polish students based on empirical research. MIL is a key issue for today’s societies as it equips citizens with the skills needed to use various media and information channels and exercise their basic human rights. Phenomena such as post-truth, the way people are more inclined to accept arguments based on emotions and beliefs than facts, disinformation and fake news are an important context and subject of ongoing scientific discussions. Keeping in mind the limitations of self-report methods, the authors combine the elements of students’ self-assessment with the questions that test their theoretical knowledge and competences related to recognizing fake news. The research sample consists of 870 students of social sciences and journalism. The results of the research provide detailed knowledge about the level of MIL as well as political preferences of students. By that, authors hope to contribute to the global scientific discussion, offering their research conducted in the context of the declining quality of democracy in Poland.

Opis:
In today’s interconnected world, implementing media and information literacy (MIL) into school education is essential to equip students with the critical skills needed to navigate an increasingly complex information landscape and discern between credible sources and misinformation. By fostering a generation of media-literate individuals, students can be empowered to become responsible consumers, creators, and contributors in the digital age, thus safeguarding democratic principles and promoting informed civic engagement. This research paper delves into the critical challenges surrounding the implementation of MIL in school education across Central Asian countries, with a specific focus on Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan. Through a comprehensive examination, the study addresses key issues such as the perceptions of MIL trainers and experts regarding its significance, exemplary approaches for integration into school education, assessment methods of MIL education programs, differences between Central Asian and global MIL programs, the impact of MIL deficiency on the educational system, and the potential consequences of neglecting its implementation. Drawing on in-depth interviews, existing literature, and comparative analyses, the paper sheds light on the complexities and implications of MIL implementation within the unique context of Central Asia.

With the objectives of the Grünwald Declaration (1983), the Alexandria Proclamation (2006), the UNESCO Paris Agenda (2007) and the concept of media literacy (alias understanding and using mass media in either an assertive or non-assertive way, including an informed and critical understanding of media, the techniques they employ and their effects) on mind, it goes without saying that any communication takes place in a certain context (set of facts and circumstances surrounding a media text for the purpose of its interpretation as defined by Wilson et al., 2011, p. 182). Having media literacy on mind, “know-where” to search for information and “knowwhether” such researched information identifies facts imply in our understanding media and literacy, respectively. Then, know-why corresponds with our perception of the context (Wilson, 2011), and know better conveys “to know or understand the truth about something” (Merriam-Webster, n.d.). The perspective of Haider & Sundin (2022) is the one that the purpose of information literacy is to support people’s knowledge, competencies and resources for their proficient engagement with information (incl. finding, evaluating, producing, and communicating situated information in contextappropriate ways). On the one hand, literacy is a conceptual entity in the context of educational sciences; on the other hand, information literacy (just like media literacy) merely specifies media or information, data, digital, or artificial intelligence (AI) as an entity for literacy to latch onto. In the global survey – addressed to UNESCO networks of Associated Schools and university Chairs in May 2023 slightly over one-tenth of 450 institutions (of which 44% were from Europe) confirmed that they have developed institutional policies and/or formal guidance concerning the use of generative AI applications. Curriculum delivery at higher education institutions adheres to Bloom’s taxonomy (Bloom, 1956), which can be applied in two alternative modes: the traditional approach or the flipped approach, in a variety of cultural backgrounds. The aim of our paper is to map the awareness of media (and information) literacy among higher education students at the University of Economics in Bratislava with instruction either in the Slovak language or in the English language. Findings reveal gaps in recognition of sponsored content just like relatively low awareness of generally respected fact-checking online sites with remarkable discrepancies between the cohort studying in the Slovak language and the cohort studying in the English language.

Opis:
The article presents the results of a study that aimed to analyse students’ attitudes towards infodemic caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The author adopted the interpretation of infodemic as a process of spreading an excess of untrue information, which complicates the evaluation and selection of reliable content. The research problem was the question of students’ attitudes towards false information related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The research sample consisted of 37 students of pedagogy. The research was conducted in a qualitative research paradigm. The results indicated that the surveyed students had a positive and stable organisation of their own knowledge, beliefs, feelings, and such forms of behaviour and expressive reactions as are necessary when confronted with infodemic. The respondents declared that they search for content in various sources and make a critical comparison and identification of false content. Despite this, they do not have a sufficiently in-depth knowledge of how to debunk false information. They feel the need for a great deal of cognitive effort to verify content. Therefore, the author makes recommendations for the formation of critical media literacy – as a way of building social resilience to disinformation and other disorders of the information age.
