    The article attempts to outline the problem of exile in essays of Predrag Matvejević, a remarkable Croatian intellectualist, defining himself as Yugoslav. Starting with a short presentation of his nonconformist views on political and social issues and review of constantly returning charges against the essayist, the article focuses on tracking main features of his writing about political emigration. The paper discusses the condition of writer in exile and the consequences of being between exile and asylum. The conclusion is statement that only cultural identity offers asylum.

    Opis:
    The author of this article reconstructs the image of Venice depicted in the novel-essay Druga Venecija (The Other Venice: Secrets of the City) by Predrag Matvejević. The novel is characterised by multilingualism (loanwords from the Italian language and its dialects) and contributions from other arts (numerous illustrations, maps, photo reprints, etc.). The discursive mechanisms shaping the impression of space and the world that is represented, as well as the nonlinguistic (visual) ways of its reproduction, are analysed in the article. The narration of the novel is deprived of plot, as it is essayistic and dehistoricised. The book incorporates different genres, combining elements of the essay, travelogue novels, encyclopaediae, and portolan charts. It is characterised by minimalism and restrained language, which are distinguishing features of Matvejević’s work. The poetics of minimalism is reflected in the fragmentation of the plot, the selectivity of themes, and the simplicity of style. The writer concentrates on presenting the details, exploring unknown areas that are overlooked in other literary descriptions of Venice. The originality of Matvejević’s creative method is based on tracking down abandoned, non-obvious, and devastated places; the book, therefore, describes the passages of the city, referring random information and fragments of other stories and legends. Enumeration is the most frequent figure of speech used by the writer to describe phenomena in a synchronous and non-hierarchical way. The starting point for the considerations made in this article are the philosophical concepts of the relationship of semiotic systems and different types of art (both applied and fine) to the category of spatiality (Derrida, Rewers, Eco, Taine).
    Autorka rekonstruuje obraz Wenecji przedstawiony w powieści-eseju Predraga Matvejevicia pt. Inna Wenecja. Powieść tę charakteryzuje wielojęzyczność (zapożyczenia z języka włoskiego i jego dialektów) oraz wielotworzywowość (zawiera bowiem liczne ilustracje, mapy, przedruki zdjęć itp.). Analizie zostają poddane mechanizmy dyskursywne kształtujące wrażenie przestrzeni i świat przedstawiony oraz niejęzykowe (plastyczne) sposoby jej odwzorowania. Narracja w Innej Wenecji jest afabularna, zeseizowana i odhistoryczniona. Powieść łączy gatunki eseju, powieści podróżniczej, leksykonu i portolanu. Charakteryzuje ją minimalizm i wstrzemięźliwość językowa, które są znakami rozpoznawczymi twórczości Predraga Matvejevicia. Przejawiają się one we fragmentaryczności fabuły, wybiórczości motywów, prostocie stylu. Autor koncentruje się na przedstawianiu szczegółu, eksploruje obszary nieznane, pomijane w innych literackich opisach Wenecji. Oryginalność metody twórczej Matvejevicia polega na tropieniu miejsc opuszczonych, nieoczywistych, zdewastowanych. Opisuje więc fragmenty, miasta, przytacza wyrywkowe informacje i fragmenty opowieści. Najczęściej stosuje autor figurę wyliczenia, dzięki której opisywane zjawiska są przedstawiane w sposób synchroniczny i niezhierarchizowany. Punktem wyjścia do podjętych rozważań są koncepcje filozoficzne podejmujące problem związku systemów semiotycznych i różnych rodzajów sztuk z kategorią przestrzenności (Derrida, Rewers, Eco, Taine).
