Opis:
In studies on men and masculinities, there is an increasing number of theories, which result from development, discussions and criticism in the area. However, in the context of this paper, two ways of describing masculinities are taken into account, i.e. caring masculinities and hybrid masculinities. The article analyses research results on male nurses in Poland, which were performed by means of in-depth interviews, according to theoretical assumptions on caring and hybrid masculinities. The interviews revealed varying ways of perceiving masculinities in the context of care. Out of the ways identified by the Author, the study focuses on the analysis of how to define masculinity as a belief that masculinity is accomplished by ensuring hegemonic masculinity. It also shows how this way of defining masculinity is related to the assumptions of hybrid masculinity. As a result, the analyses show that caring masculinities are not only diverse but also that the very term is disputable with regard to masculinities involved in various types of care.

Taking as a starting point the construction of the conceptual framework of gender produced by the Brazilian authors Benedito Medrado and Jorge Lyra, the present article brings as a central focus the discussion on the creation of strategies, principles and methodological horizons for the insertion of masculinities in the scene. Developing the issue of the need for a welcoming of masculinities in the scenic activity beyond a simple opportune thematic interest for the construction of performances and plays, the authors propose the creation of clues/principles that can be developed so that masculinities enter the scene under a perspective of political and careful awareness of gender issues that goes beyond a dichotomous and binary model of power relations, resulting from a universalizing stereotyping of being a man and being a woman. The authors also include in their observation the creation of an expanded artistic territory where the work does not close in on itself and includes artistic proposals linked to intersectional factors (such as race, class, age, sexuality and coloniality) that constitute the relations of gender consider the vast and complex production of multiple masculinity models.

Krytyczne studia nad mężczyznami i męskościami oferują coraz większą pulę terminów i kategorii opisujących męskości oraz zależności genderowe. Najbardziej zananą teorią, która zmonopolizowała badania w obrębie studiów, jest teoria męskości hegemonicznej R.W. Connell. Teoria ta została poddana krytyce, która przyczyniła się do wyłonienia kolejnych propozycji opisu męskości. Jedną z takich propozycji są męskości hybrydowe. Celem tekstu jest poszerzenie dostępnych w języku polskim opisów i krytyki koncepcji teoretycznych w obrębie krytycznych studiów nad mężczyznami i męskościami. Autorka skupiła się na przybliżeniu koncepcji męskości hybrydowych. W ramach opisu kategorii męskości hybrydowych autorka wskazała na sposoby definiowania konceptu, opisała konsekwencje hybrydyzacji oraz odniosła się do badań, które wykorzystały tę kategorię analityczną lub których wnioski odnosiły się do męskości hybrydowych. Koncept męskości hybrydowych został również ukazany  na tle wybranych kategorii męskości i poddany dyskusji.
Critical Studies on Men and Masculinities offer an array of terms and categories to describe masculinities and gender relations. The hegemonic masculinity theory of R.W. Connell is the most common theory that has monopolised studies on masculinities. However, it has been criticised heavily, the result being new ways of describing masculinities, including hybrid masculinities. The main aim of the article is to provide Polish readers with comprehensive descriptions and a critique of theoretical theories on men and masculinities with special focus on the hybrid masculinity theory. The analysis provides definitions of hybrid masculinities and considers consequences of hybridisation. Besides, the author analyses studies, which use the concept of hybrid masculinities. Finally, the hybrid masculinity theory is presented and discussed in the light of other theories of masculinities.

In-depth interviews with men teachers and other key personnel in early childhood education (ECE) revealed that the men are attempting to perform a type of subordinate masculinity that could challenge traditional gender relations. However, their attempts are thwarted by the gender regime embedded in the occupational structure, particularly the demand that they perform as “male role models” for the boys in their classes. This means that they are prescribed to perform in stereotypical ways and to purposely model traditional masculinity to boys, thereby inculcating hegemonic norms of masculinity.

Sex and sexuality are deemed “sensitive” issues in relatively conservative, predominantly Muslim countries. Men’s sex and sexualities research within such cultural contexts confronts certain challenges and raises important methodological issues. This paper reflects on some of the methodological issues and challenges encountered when carrying out a study in Bangladesh. It reports on a male researcher’s qualitative study of men’s sexual health and masculinity in Bangladesh, a predominantly Muslim country where sexuality is largely constituted as a taboo subject. The researcher faced challenges in gaining access and in discussing sex and sexuality issues in interview settings. Moreover, the interview context emerged as a site for expressing, negotiating, challenging men and masculinities. Drawing upon experiences in navigating the “field” in Bangladesh, some of the useful ways of researching “sensitive” issues such as sex, sexuality, and masculinity within these settings are suggested, highlighting what works when researching men’s sexual health and masculinity.

The purpose of this article is discourse analysis of masculinity created in reports assessing the current condition of Polish startups. The analysis covered reports published by the Startup Poland foundation from 2015-2019. This text is an attempt to apply the heuristic framework of integrative gender theories to interpret the results of the research, and explain how the discursively masculinity was constructed. Startups as innovative professional structures belonging to the knowledge-based economy model are an example of organizations typical of the information society. Numerous studies report changes (crises) occurring among the practiced male patterns (especially those typical for the countries of the global North). The results of the analysis show that despite these reports, the largest startup organizations striving to produce innovative solutions and using modern solutions, on the discursive surface, are associated with cultural patterns of hegemonic masculinity. Polish startups, on a structural and symbolic dimensions, are a highly masculine spaces. However, due to the practice of achieving hegemony, they (startups) can be interpreted in terms of cooperative or hybrid masculinity.

Based on selected performances (including Autobiografia na wszelki wypadek [Autobiography just in case] by Michał Buszewicz, Woyzeck by Grzegorz Jaremko, Chcieliśmy porozmawiać o męskości, ale zostaliśmy przyjaciółmi [We wanted to talk about masculinity, but we became friends] by the Grupa Performatywna Chłopaki, Bromance by Michał Przybyła and Dominik Więcek, Halka by Anna Smolar and Ojcowie [Fathers] by Błażej Biegasiewicz), the author analyses transformations in the ways of representing masculinities in recent Polish theatre. In her opinion, it has been possible for the past few years to notice both a marked increase in interest in thematising male emotionality, fragility, caring, tenderness or intimacy in Polish theatre and a radicalisation of angry patriarchal masculinity, especially among those who reject the perspectives of institutional criticism or the #metoo movement. In this article, however, the author focuses solely on outlining the historical conditions that constituted patriarchal masculinity with all its qualities and on analysing feminist-formed masculinities in Polish theatre using methodologies developed by feminist theorists (bell hooks and Karla Elliott) and by researchers associated with the field of critical studies of men and masculinities (Michael Kimmel, Raewyn Connell, Jason Wilson, Erik Anderson and Paco Abril).

Omawia przyczyny pojawienia się tych debat oraz podkreśla ten rodzaj polemiki, która nieprzerwanie informuje o moralnej panice dotyczącej kwestii chłopców, którzy nabyli status „nowych opresjonowanych”. Autorka bada przyczynę przedstawiania tego zagadnienia jako kryzysu edukacyjnego lat 90. XX wieku oraz to, jaki wpływ ma na niego feminizm. Najważniejsza część tego artykułu koncentruje się na retoryce ostrego sprzeciwu antyfeministycznego i jego wpływu na dyskusje na temat chłopięcej edukacji.
In this paper the author provides an overview of the debates “about the boys” in United Kingdom, United States and Australia. The ways in which these debates have emerged are discussed to highlight the type of polemic which continues to inform about the moral panic surrounding the issues of boys who have acquired the status of the “new disadvantaged”. The author explores how the issue has been portrayed as an educational crisis of the nineties and how this problem has been attributed to the impact of feminism. The most important part of the paper focuses on an anti-feminist backlash rhetoric and its impact on debates about boys’ education.

Artykuł przedstawia eksploracyjne rozpoznanie mechanizmów segregacji zawodowej pod względem płci na rynku pracy na przykładzie wybranych grup zawodowych: strażaków, kurierów i kierowców autobusów. Prowadzona analiza pozwala na zrozumienie czynników wspierających lub osłabiających utrzymywanie się męskich wzorców w tych miejscach pracy i grupach zawodowych. Celem było zbadanie społecznych mechanizmów segregacji na rynku pracy ze względu na płeć przez skoncentrowanie się na męskich doświadczeniach pracy w zawodach zmaskulinizowanych. Doświadczenia mężczyzn analizowano w perspektywie zmieniającego się świata pracy. Efektem jest typologia trzech światów męskiej pracy: grupę zawodową broniącą męskości, grupy zawodowej wyzyskiwanej za pomocą męskości oraz grupy zawodowej nieprzywiązanej do męskości.
The article presents explorative research of occupational segregation mechanisms in terms of gender on the labour market, on the example of three occupations: firefighters, parcel delivery couriers and bus drivers. The analysis enables to understand factors that enhance or weaken persistence of masculine patterns in workplaces and occupational groups. Its aim was to focus on social mechanisms of gendered segregation on the labour market, with regard to men experiences in masculinized occupations, in the context of changes in work and employment. The article offers conclusion in form of typology of three worlds of men’s work: occupational group that protects masculinity, occupational group that is exploited with use of masculinity and occupational group that is not attached to masculinity.

Action-Research Methodology and gender sensitivity linked to solve gender violence expression in prisons. The curriculum negotiation is a principle that allowed prisoners to engage in the activities in a voluntary way. Six months of field qualitative implementation-contrary to Blitzkrieg Ethnographyallowed us to get a real change of abilities as team trust, cooperation skills, decision-making process to avoid violence and to recognize the need the prisoners have to express their sentiments. Results show a success of critical Action Research and active participation of all the actors as well as the construction of a peace culture and a new field of work for pedagogues.

The paper presents the concept of masculinity within the non-binary and multilayered model of gender/sex traits. Within that model, masculinity is not a simple idea, but rather is fragmented into many traits in diverse clusters. The experience of transgender men and men with intersex traits suggests that self-determined male gender identity is a mega trait that is sufficient for being a man. However, masculinity is not only psychological, as the content of the psychological feeling of being a man refers to social norms about how men should be and behave. And male coded traits are described as traits that frequently occur within the group of people identifying as men. Therefore, I claim that there are two interdependent ideas in the concept of masculinity: the self-determined male gender identity (first-person perspective) and a cluster of traits coded as male (third-person perspective). Within non-binary model the interplay between the two interdependent ideas allows to include borderline masculinities.

The fundamental objective of the studies was to reconstruct and analyze the category of masculinity in the media discourse that refers to Robert Lewandowski as well as to describe and interpret the most important discursive strategies used in creating the image of the footballer. The research material includes almost 120 Polish-language media messages: mainly Internet articles, commercial spots, and interviews, all of which appeared in the years 2013-2019. This article presents the results of the critical analysis of the discourse, including proposals of the discourse-historical approach. The prime theoretical framework of the studies is made up of the theory of hegemonic masculinity on the one hand and the theory of inclusive masculinity on the other, as well as the concept of caring masculinities. The discourse on Lewandowski is not homogeneous; it includes elements derived from different versions of masculinity. The discourse is divided into two parts: one connected with the professional sphere and the other referring to the private. The strategies describing the footballer’s professional life are quite conservative. The elements of the highest importance within this part of the discourse include hard work, success, rivalry, and the mesomorph body type. The part of the discourse referring to the footballer’s family life is dominated by the strategies connected with the concept of caring masculinities and the notion of egalitarian relationship even though it is not completely free from the traditional gender roles.
Podstawowym celem badań było zrekonstruowanie i przeanalizowanie kategorii męskości w dyskursie medialnym dotyczącym Roberta Lewandowskiego oraz opisanie i zinterpretowanie najważniejszych strategii dyskursywnych wykorzystywanych w kreowaniu obrazu piłkarza. Materiał badawczy obejmuje blisko 120 polskojęzycznych przekazów medialnych – głównie artykułów internetowych, spotów reklamowych i wywiadów, które ukazały się w latach 2013−2019. W artykule przedstawiono wyniki krytycznej analizy dyskursu przeprowadzonej z uwzględnieniem postulatów podejścia dyskursywno-historycznego. Główne ramy teoretyczne podjętych badań stanowią teoria męskości hegemonicznej, teoria męskości inkluzyjnej, a także koncepcja męskości opiekuńczej. Dyskurs dotyczący Lewandowskiego nie jest jednorodny, występują w nim elementy pochodzące z różnych wersji męskości. Ten dyskurs dzieli się na dwie części: pierwszą – związaną ze sferą zawodową oraz drugą – prywatną. Strategie opisujące życie zawodowe piłkarza są dosyć konserwatywne. Elementy o największym znaczeniu w tej części dyskursu nawiązują do ciężkiej pracy, sukcesu, rywalizacji oraz mezomorficznego wzorca ciała. Część dyskursu odnosząca się do życia rodzinnego piłkarza jest zdominowana przez strategie łączące się z koncepcją męskości opiekuńczej i pojęciem relacji partnerskiej, ale nie są one całkowiciewolne od wpływu tradycyjnych wzorców ról płciowych.

The aim of the paper is to present and analyse the intersection between men, masculinities and physical violence in the comparative, European dimension as this issue is still too rarely raised in the existing literature dealing with issues on both violence, and men and masculinities. The presented findings result to a large extent from research conducted by an international team of researchers within the PROGRESS The Role of Men in Gender Equality project (2011–2012). The paper presents analysis regarding connections between perpetration of violence and the character of traditional, hegemonic masculinity; data on the scale and types of violence perpetrated and experienced by men from different European countries; analysis of the position of men as a victims of (physical) violence; and a presentation of the forms of men’s (social) activism against (male) violence.

Artykuł opisuje społeczny kontekst tworzenia konstrukcji wiejskich męskości, ich przemiany oraz główne kategorie, które pozwalają na ich definiowanie. Wyodrębnione kategorie analityczne to: rolnictwo i jego znaczenie w kreowaniu figury rolnika/farmera jako symbolu męskości wiejskiej; alkohol i publiczne odgrywanie męskości; seksualność i erotyczne obrazy wsi; małżeństwo heteroseksualne i praktyki rodzicielskie. Celem artykułu jest ukazanie dynamiki wiejskich męskości i zmian, którym podlegają, oraz wskazanie wzajemnych powiązań miasta i wsi w kontekście męskości. Artykuł wskazuje na potrzebę zwrócenia uwagi na dotychczas rzadko poruszane w polskiej socjologii wsi kwestie, na przykład sytuację osób nieheteronormatywnych.
The article is an analysis of the concepts, perspectives, and premises used in rural studies to depict rural men. The most influential publications that are devoted to the interlinkages between gender and rurality in Western societies have been analyzed. The article presents the social context, in which the constructs of rural masculinities have emerged, the transformations thereof and the key categories they are defined by. These categories are: the agriculture and its role in the construction of a farmer figure as a symbol of rural masculinity; alcohol and public performances of masculinity; sexuality and the erotic images of the countryside; heterosexual marriage and parental practices. The article aims at demonstrating the dynamics of changes in rural masculinities and indicating the connections between city and the countryside in the aspect of masculinity. The article calls for more attention to some issues that were infrequently addressed in Polish rural sociology, such as the situation of non-heteronormative persons.

Artykuł podejmuje kwestię konstruowania dwóch różnych modeli męskości obecnych na kartach Trans-Atlantyku Witolda Gombrowicza. Konfrontacja anachronicznej polskiej męskości sarmackiej z nowoczesną innością męskości południowoamerykańskiej owocuje w powieści rewizją polskiej formy narodowej, umożliwiając rozszczelnienie granic pojęcia męskości, zamkniętej w europocentrycznych definicjach. Kulturowa odmienność argentyńskiego mężczyzny wobec mężczyzny polskiego okazuje się możliwa do uchwycenia za pomocą teorii postkolonialnych. Autor analizuje teksty Gombrowicza, używając takich pojęć, jak „hybrydyzacja męskości” (Eduardo Archetti) czy „męskości plebejskie” (Pablo Ben). Idea Ojczyzny, która w powieści jest silnie sprzężona z męskością hegemoniczną i narodową ideologią, została zderzona z koncepcją Synczyzny, opartej na modelu męskości plebejskiej, hybrydycznej, niepoddającej się dyskursom normatywizującym i nacjonalizującym. Polska męskość sarmacka, ukazana na tle kultury argentyńskiej jako eksces, pozwala autorowi wysnuć tezę o kampie męskim, a nawet sarmackim.
The article takes up an issue of structuring two different models of masculinity that are presented on the pages of Gombrowicz’s novel. Confrontation of anachronistic, Polish, Sarmatian masculinity and modern otherness of South American masculinity results in revision of Polish national forms. It enables unsealing the limits of the notion ’masculinity’ which is closed in Eurocentric definitions. Cultural diversity of Argentinian and Polish men might be expressed by postcolonial theories. The author analyses Gombrowicz’s texts and uses terms, such as hybrid masculinity (Eduardo Archetti) or plebeian masculinities (Pablo Ben).The idea of homeland is strongly connected with hegemoniczna masculinity and national ideology. It is faced with the concept of Synczyzna (Sonland) that is based on a model of demotic and hybrid masculinity and becomes the subject of normativizing and nationalizing discourse.Polish Sarmatian masculinity presented in comparison to Argentinian culture seems to be the excess and it allows the author to draw a conlusion about masculine camp, or even sarmatic one.
