    Opis:
    Humility is enjoying an upsurge of interest among contemporary virtue theorists. Unfortunately, many of these discussions have cast humility as inconsistent with social activism. Humility is assumed to consist of quiet and unobtrusive traits which seem inconsistent with the assertiveness and outspokenness required for social activism. Paul Bloomfield argues that this aspect of humility – being inconsistent with social activism – prevents it from counting as a virtue at all as a virtue must be the kind of thing that is always appropriate to possess and display. Here I attempt to present an account of humility that is not inconsistent with social activism and that can, and should, be considered a virtue where virtue is loosely understood to mean a generally desirable trait of character.

    Opis:
    Neither in the Constitution of the United States nor in the later enacted Bill of Rights, does the term “human dignity” occur. Therefore the thesis that was established in the early 90s of the 20th century by Ronald Dworkin and William J. Brennan Jr. may come as a surprise. Both of them – an eminent philosopher of law and a judge of the Supreme Court, recognized human dignity as a fundamental value declared by the American con- stitution and its complementary Bill of Rights. After closer recognition with American legal culture, this thesis no longer raises such controversies. Despite the fact that the Founding Fathers of the United States did not care so much about dignity as they did about other values, this idea nevertheless appeared in their publications and personal letters. Moreover, in the first Supreme Court ruling on Chisholm v. Georgia, the state, as a product of the human being and its importance, took the view that the right to human dignity was innate. Of course, the American doctrine and its legal culture have been evolving for two hundred years, changing under the influ- ence of a number of important social phenomena. As key topics for the article the following are recognized: abolitionism and the fight against slavery, the suffrage movement and the struggle for women’s rights and the civil rights movement and the fight against racial segregation. All of them undoubtedly have impacted the American idea of dignity, and they certainly have played a significant role in the changes that have occurred over the years in the United States. In European legal culture dignity similarly plays a crucial role, both in individual countries as well as at su- pranational level. Analysis of the place of dignity in American legal culture will provide material that can be compared with its European heritage.

    Martin Luther King Jr. cannot be said to have addressed the problem of terrorism in general because he proposed his philosophy of non-violence resistance within the context of the oppression, injustice, segregation, violence and discrimination suffered by the African Americans. Nevertheless, his philosophy captured ways by which we can fittingly address the problem of terrorism. Many of the methods of non-violence given by Martin Luther King Jr. are of paramount importance in the face of terrorism. His philosophy is basically important today in Nigeria owing to the fact that our unity as a country is threatened by the recurring activities of terrorism and as such we are at a cross road in the history of our country, where drastic decisions have to be taken to address this perilous trend. The philosophy of non-violent resistance as proposed by Martin Luther King Jr. is a veritable step towards a working solution, as it is not only an outcry against terrorism of any sort, but also an ideology that frowns against any form of action that results in the taking of human life or the carnage that comes with violence. His non-violent resistance theory which he developed after a deep study of Mahatma Gandhi’s theory of non-violence, is a radical approach towards the fight against violence of any sort inflicted on the African Americans of his time, an action borne of a passionate fight against racism. So, to aptly address the problem of terrorism in Nigeria, it is necessary we consult and apply some principles of the philosophy of non-violence resistance as postulated by Martin Luther King Jr.

    Artykuł podejmuje polemikę z wynikami badań na temat zwolenników reformacji luterańskiej w monarchii Zygmunta Starego, które zostały przedstawione w opublikowanym w 2018 r. studium Natalii Nowakowskiej. Zdaniem autora kwerenda została przeprowadzona w sposób selektywny, a niektóre odczyty łacińskich źródeł i ich interpretacja budzą zastrzeżenia, o czym świadczy m.in. sprawa krakowskiego złotnika Macieja Bochslera (Guthslara) rozpatrywana w grudniu 1532 r. i odnotowana wraz z kilkunastoma innymi procesami o luteranizm w krakowskiej księdze biskupiej o sygnaturze AEp 2. Przeanalizowane przez brytyjską uczoną źródła nie zmieniają zasadniczo ocen o słabym oddziaływaniu idei Marcina Lutra na społeczeństwo polskie w latach dwudziestych i trzydziestych XVI w., z wyjątkiem miast pruskich i elitarnych grup mieszczan pochodzenia niemieckiego działających w Małopolsce (Kraków) i Wielkopolsce (Poznań).
    The article engages in the polemics over the findings of research on the supporters of the Lutheran Reformation in the monarchy of King Sigismund the Old, presented in the study by Natalia Nowakowska, published in 2018. In the author’s opinion, the search query was conducted selectively, and some readings of Latin sources and their interpretation raise objections, as evidenced by, among other things, the case of the Cracow goldsmith Matthias Bochsler (Guthslar), dealt with in December 1532, and registered along with several other trials of Lutheranism, in the court book of Cracow bishops catalogued under the shelfmark AEp 2. The sources analysed by the British scholar do not fundamentally change the opinion of the small impact of Martin Luther’s ideas on the Polish society in the 1520s and 1530s, except for Prussian cities and elite groups of burghers of German origin active in Lesser Poland (Cracow) and Greater Poland (Poznań).
